hands follow heart

Things have been slow here ,crafts wise. Both Marta and Liliana had a bad cold that pretty much rocked our rhythm for the past two weeks. Sleepless nights and a super-clingy baby meant that I couldn’t do much other than try to catch up with the house chores and tend to my babies. Brazil is also only a week away, so that kept me from starting any big projects recently, specially knitting projects.

However, I do have something to share. I made a birthday crown for Marta to wear when blowing out the three candles from her cake. The birthday crown is an European tradition that is also widely adopted by the Waldorf community around the world.  And since I had my sleeves already rolled up, I went ahead and made a second one as gift to Marta’s best friend whose birthday happens to be just a week apart from hers. Marta loved her crown and was a very proud birthday girl!

I came up with the design myself but did a search on Flickr for inspiration and used the book Creative Play for your toddler for some guidelines on how to make a play crown.

As coisas têm andado um pouco devagar por aqui no que diz respeito aos trabalhos manuais. Tanto a Marta quanto a Liliana tiveram uma baita gripe que sacudiu toda a nossa rotina por duas semanas. Noites sem dormir e um neném que só quer colo significaram que tudo o que eu consegui fazer foi correr atrás das tarefas de casa e cuidar dos meus dois bebês. O Brasil também está só a uma semana de distância, e achei melhor não começar nenhum projeto novo, muito menos detricô.

No entanto, eu tenho uma coisa para mostrar. Eu fiz uma coroa de aniversário para a Marta usar para soprar as três velinhas do seu bolo. A coroa de aniversário é uma tradição européia que também é amplamente adotada pela comunidade Waldorf ao redor do mundo. E uma vez que eu já estava com a mão na massa eu aproveitei e fiz umas egunda coroa de presente para a melhor amiga da Marta que faz anos uma semana depois dela. Marta adorou sua coroa e vestiu-a orgulhosamente!

Eu mesma inventei o design das coroas, mas dei uma olhada no Flickr para inspiração e também consultei o livro Brincadeiras criativas para seu filho para instruções gerais de como se fazer uma coroa de brinquedo.

Marta has never shown much interest in dolls until… hmmm, yesterday. It was yesterday that, for the first time, I saw her interacting with a doll as a doll, and not as another plaything. At the parent and tot session she had a doll sitting in a minuscule chair and she was feeding her with a rolling pin (isn’t this great?).  Then at home she got one of the dolls (actually, the only one that is out at the moment) and was pushing  it in the little doll pram we have. She then, very caringly, used a bib to cover it and placed a few toys for it in there. And when it was Marta’s nap time she spontaneously put the dolly to sleep in the doll’s crib. It was so sweet to watch. I then asked Marta if the doll wasn’t going to get cold in there and we came to a conclusion that the doll needs not only a blanket but also a pillow for her crib, Marta was quick to add. So last night I found myself designing a quilt for the doll and thoroughly enjoying the process.

A Marta nunca tinha mostrado muito interesse em bonecas… até ontem. Foi ontem que pela primeira ves eu a vi brincando de boneca e não com a boneca como mais um brinquedo que é levado daqui pra lá ou de lá pra cá. No grupo de recreação ela botou uma boneca sentada numa cadeirinha mínima e deu comida para ela com um rolo de massa (uma cena!). De volta em casa, ela pegou uma das bonecas (a única disponível no momento, aliás) e ficou passeando com ela de carrinho pela casa. Ela, muito carinhosamente, cobriu a boneca com um babador e colocou alguns brinquedos para ela no carrinho. E quando chegou a hora do soninho da Marta ela espontâneamente a colocou no bercinho de boneca. Muito fofo de se ver. Eu então peguntei a Marta se a boneca não ia ficar com frio no berço, e chegamos a conclusão de que a boneca precisa de um cobertor e um travesseiro também. Então ontem a noite eu me encontrei projetando um quilt para a bonequinha e curtindo muito o processo!

Since we’ve taken down the Christmas decorations in early January I’ve been slowly building up our Winter nature table. The beautiful Snow Queen and her baby, given to us by Anna, have now a companion. Though of a different style he is still a King Winter. He is actually a match for the Snow Queen I made for the Seasons Round Exchange. I started them at the same time but only now I was able to finish King Winter. The snow flakes and snow fairy hanging from the branch were produced at the parent and tot sessions I take Marta and Liliana to at the Toronto Waldorf School. We have now exactly one month to enjoy our nature table until we land in the middle of the (very hot) Brazilian Summer!

Desde que guardamos as decorações de Natal no início de janeiro, eu tenho aos poucos montado a nosa mesa da natureza de inverno. A bela Rainha da Neve, que nos foi dada pela Anna, agora ganhou um companheiro. De estilo diferente, mas ainda assim um Rei Inverno. Ele é na verdade o par da Rainha da Neve que eu fiz para o Seasons Round Exchange. Eu comecei a fazer os dois ao mesmo tempo, mas só agora consegui terminá-lo. Os flocos de neve e a Fada da Neve que estão pendurados no galho foram produzidos durante o grupo de recreação ao qual eu levo a Marta e a Liliana na Toronto Waldorf School. Agora nós temos exatamente um mês para curtir a nossa mesa da natureza, até nós aterrizarmos no meio do verão brasileiro!

Desejando a todos um Natal muito feliz!

I’m still running against the clock though most of the presents are now finished and wrapped. Yesterday I finished these wind wands for Marta and Liliana. I’ve been wanting to make them for ages and Christmas was an excellent excuse. I got the idea from this wonderful book called ” Creative play for your toddler – Steiner Waldorf expertise and toy projects for 2 -4s ” by Christopher Clouder and Janni Nicol. I also finished Baby’s Winter outfit. Baby was a wedding gift to us from my dear friend Sue McCabe and is well loved by my children. The doll’s clothes  are not exactly a Christmas gift to Marta and Liliana  but Baby will appear fully dressed in her new garments on Christmas day.  This afternoon I’m working on the especial star for tonight for our last Advent ritual and as soon as Marta and Liliana wake up from their nap we’ll make cookies for Santa Claus.

Eu ainda estou correndo contra o relógio apesar de quase todos os presentes estarem prontos e embrulhados. Ontem eu finalmene terminei os círculos de fitas para a Marta e a Liliana. Já havia um tempão que eu queria fazê-los e o Natal foi uma razão excelente. A idéia foi do livro ” Creative play for your toddler – Steiner Waldorf expertise and toy projects for 2 -4s ” por Christopher Clouder and Janni Nicol, que aliás é ótimo e eu super recomendo. Ontem eu também terminei a roupa de inverno da Neném. A Neném foi o nosso presente de casamento feito pela minha querida amiga Sue McCabe e adorada pelas minhas filhotas. As roupas da boneca não são exatamente um presente de Natal para a Marta e a Lili, mas a Neném vai aparecer toda de roupa nova no dia de Natal. Hoje a tarde eu estou trabalhando numa estrela especial para o nosso último ritual do Advento essa noite e assim que as meninas acordarem famos fazer cookies para o Papai Noel.

So here is what I sent to my partner Anna and her family on this edition of the Seasons Round. The Snow Queen was inspired on a much more elaborate standing puppet I saw at the crafts fair at TWS. It was great fun working on it but also quite challenging as sewing isn’t exactly my strong point, let alone sewing by hand! I’m very pleased with the result and still have material left to (maybe) make the king for our nature table after the holidays. The origami ornament is called Morning Dew. The pattern for this model is on the book “Kusudama Ball Origami” by Makoto Yamaguchi and is made of  60 pieces of folded paper. Making these origami balls have been a passion of mine for over ten years now. Although they are not originally meant to be Christmas tree ornaments they lend themselves beautifully to that purpose. The last handmade item that I sent Anna was the Christmas card I made with Marta using a paper underlay and crayons. Additionally in the package I included a wooden card holder and a beautiful postcard of Christmas lights. Aqui está o que eu mandei para a minha parceira Ana e sua família nessa edição do Seasons Round. A Rainha da Neve foi inspirada numa boneca que eu vi na feira de Natal da TWS. Eu curti muito fazer a boneca mas foi também um desafio uma vez que costurar não é o meu forte, muito menos costurar a mão. Eu gostei muito do resultado e ainda tenho material suficiente para fazer (talvez) o Rei da Neve depois do Natal. O enfeite de origami chama-se Morning Dew e o modelo está no livro “Kusudama Ball Origami” de Makoto Yamaguchi e é feito de 60 pedaços de papel dobrado. Fazer essas bolas tem sido uma paixão minha há mais de dez anos. O último ítem feito a mão que eu mandei par a Anna foi o cartão de Natal que eu fiz com a Marta usando uma matriz de papel e lápis de cêra. Além das coisas que eu fiz eu ainda incluí um porta cartão e um cartão postal natalino. A couple of days ago we received our package from the Seasons Round Exchange. Seasons Round is a very sweet initiative organised by Kyrie from are so happy.  It is a crafts swap focused on nature tables and therefore themed according to the Seasons of the year. This edition’s theme was Winter {Light}.  This was the first time I participated and I enjoyed it thoroughly. There’s something quite especial in this collective planing, crafting, giving and receiving cycle and I was happy to be part of it. My partner for this edition was Anna from Along Griffin Creek and she treated us with so many goodies that it felt like an early Christmas. Thank you Anna so much for your generosity! I just can’t get over how cute the snow queen and baby are. They are my favourite. No início dessa semana chegou o nosso pacote do Seasons Round Exchange.  O Seasons Round é uma troca de trabalhos manuais voltados para a mesa da natureza e é organizada pela  Kyrie do are so happy. Os temas são sempre ligados as estações do ano e o tema dessa edição foi Inverno {Luz}. Essa foi a primeira vez que participei e curti do início ao fim. Tem alguma coisa muito especial no ato coletivo de planejar, fazer, dar e receber que eu fiquei muito feliz de ter feito parte. A minha parceira nessa edição do Seasons Round foi a Anna do Along Griffin Creek e ela nos mandou tantas coisas que até pareceu que o Natal tinha chegado mais cedo. Muito obrigada Anna por tanta generosidade! Here is the verse for the second week of Advent, starting today:

This past week we made these pretty stars made of translucid paper at the parent and toddler group at TWS. I just can’t get enough of their geometric beauty and am planning to make a few more of them. They make excellent Christmas decoration and look great on the windows.

Just last evening Marta and I made this mosaic star. This is actually a great project to make with a small child. Marta enjoyed ripping the tissue paper into small pieces but enjoyed using the glue stick even more.

Hoje começa a segunda semana do Advento. Acima, em inglês, está segunda parte do verso.

Na semana passada, no grupo de recração na TWS, a gente fez lindas estrelas de papel translúcido. Eu sou fascinada pela beleza das figuras geométricas que se formam quando a estrela está pronta. Elas são uma ótima decoração de Natal e ficam lindas na janela.

Ontem a noite eu e a Marta fizemos juntas a estrela mosaico. Esse é um ótimo projeto para fazer com criança pequena. A Marta adorou rasgar o papel de seda em pedacinhos mas gostou ainda mais de brincar com o bastão de cola.

Finally finished!

Anticipation was building up as Marta saw me working on the puppets the past few days. So tomorrow when Marta and Liliana come down for breakfast they will be very excited to see that Mary, Joseph and the donkey have started their journey to the nature table where they will arrive on Christmas Eve to complete the nativity scene. I hope that Marta and Liliana are enjoying Advent as much as Warren and I are!

Finalmente terminados!

Muita expectativa foi criada quando a Marta me viu trabalhando nos bonecos nesses últimos dias. Amanhã, quando a Marta e a Liliana descerem para o café da manhã vão ficar animadíssimas ao verem que Maria, José e o burrinho começaram a sua jornada até a mesa da natureza onde chegarão na véspera do Natal para completar o presépio. Espero que a Marta e a Liliana estejam curtindo o Advento tanto o quanto eu e o Warren estamos!

Also known as season’s gardens, nature tables are a common feature in Waldorf classrooms. You can also spot them in many Waldorf inspired family homes. They are a beautiful and playful way to celebrate the rythms of the seasons of the year by bringing a little bit of nature indoors.

This is my second attempt at having a nature table at home. The first time, back in spring, I  chose a place that was out of reach for the children so they wouldn’t spoil it. The idea was to dedicate a few minutes each day to purposefuly play around it and enjoy it. However, it was so well out of the way that it was basically hidden and we ended up forgetting about it.  This time I completely changed my approach and decided that the nature table is for the children. So now it is in a very visible place between our dining area and living room. It is also on a low table right  at the children’s height so they can play with the things on it.  To have it integrated in our living space seems to be working much better. Our daily interactions with it happen quite naturally and Marta has been engaged with it since I asked if she’d like to helpe me to set it up. She notices every little change that happens there, be it a new leaf or a character that has changed places. Liliana has also shown interest and loves to look at it, surprisingly, she hasn’t pulled the whole thing apart. Yet?

 A mesa da natureza é um elemento comum nas salas de aula das escolas Wladorf e nas casas de famílias que são inspiradas pela filosofia Waldorf.  Elas são como uma celebração do ritmo das estações do ano.

Essa é a minha segunda tentativa de ter uma mesa da natureza aqui em casa. Da primeira vez, na primavera, eu escolhi um lugar que era fora do alcance das crianças, pois não queria que elas estragassem tudo. A idéia era reservar alguns minutos cada dia para brincar perto da mesa e curti-la. No entanto ela estava tão fora do alcance que estava basicamente escondida e acabamos por esquecê-la. Dessa vez eu mudei completamente a minha estratégia e decidi que a mesa da natureza é para as crianças. Agora ela está bem no meio da sala, entre a mesa de jantar e a sala de estar. Eu também escolhi uma mesa bem baixa para que as crianças possam brincar com os elementos da mesa. Agora que a mesa da natureza está completamente integrada no nosso espaço social as nossas interações com ela acontecem naturalmente todos os dias. A Marta nota cada mudança que ocorre na mesa, seja uma nova folha ou um personagem que mudou de lugar. A Liliana também demonstra interesse pela mesa e adora olhar para os bonecos. Surpreendentemente ela não derrubou tudo no chão. Ainda?
