hands follow heart

The weather here has been absolutely gorgeous for the past week, and the forecast looks promising too. What better way to celebrate the late arrival of Spring than at a May Festival? That’s exactly what we did Yesterday. Both Warren and I were very busy volunteering with pizza making and the flower crowns respectively, and Marta and Liliana were free to play with their friends in the school grounds and participate in all activities for the children. Marta made a bee line straight to the rope climbing and did it countless times. She could well be a monkey, that girl! Liliana enjoyed the flower crowns and plant pot painting. We all had a great time but came home exhausted… and with a badly sore back for me .

O tempo tem estado simplesmente maravilhoso nessa última semana, e a previsão continua boa. E para celebrar a tão demorada chegada de primavera nada melhor do que o festival de maio? Foi exatamente o que fizemos ontem. Tanto Warren quanto eu estávamos ocupados voluntariando na barraca da pizza e na das coroas de flores, mas as meninas estavam livres para bricar com os amigos e participarem nas atividades oferecidas. Marta foi direto para a corda de subir e não saiu mais de lá. Já a Liliana curtiu mais pintar um vaso de flores. Foi bom para todos nós, mas chegamos em casa exaustos… e eu, com uma terrível dor nas costas

 
Ever since I made the dolls for Marta and Liliana they have been asking me to make nappies (diapers) for the them. So yesterday I rolled up my sleeves and got to it. Drafting the pattern and sewing them up was very straight forward but I got stuck deciding whether to use snaps or velcro to secure the nappies on the dolls. I’m not a great fan of velcro though I agree it is very practical and can even mean independence for individuals with impaired abilities. But when it comes to children wear and toys I think velcro robs children of the opportunity to develop some fine motor skills, patience and perseverance that buttons, laces and old fashion shoe buckles do offer.  For this reason I have only used buttons on the dolls clothes so far.  But for the nappies… I did go with velcro. And that was because I made the nappies to be interchangeable between the dolls and they have different waist sizes. And truth be said, the velcro made the nappies look and feel feel more like the nappies my girls know, with that sticker/velcroish fastening. The two girls are now over the moon with the ability to change their babies’ nappies, because you can’t be a real mama if you don’t have nappies to change, can you?

Desde que eu fiz as bonecas para a marta e a Liliana que elas vêm me pedindo para fazer fraldas para as suas bonecas. Então ontem eu arregacei as mangas e mandei brasa. Desenhar o molde e costurar foi fácil, mas aí fiquei empacada com a decisão de usar botões de pressão eu velcro para fechar a fralda. Eu não sou muito fã de velcro apesar de achar prático e até útil, principalmente para pessoas cujas habilidades físicas são limitadas. Mas para roupas de crianças e brinquedos eu acho que o velcro rouba da criança a oportunidade de desenvolver o controle motor fino, paciência e perseverança que o botão, fivela de sapato e cadarços oferecem. Por essa razão eu  até hoje só usei botões nas roupas de boneca.  Mas para as fraldas…  teve que ser velcro. Eu fiz as fraldas para serem usadas pelas duas bonecas, mas elas têm cinturas diferentes. E verdade seja dita, o velcro faz com que as fraldas sejam mais parecidas com as fraldas que as meninas conhecem, que fecham com um mixto de adesivo e velcro. Marta e Liliana estão todas contentes de poderem trocar as fraldas das suas filhas. Claro que você não pode er uma mamãe de verdade se não troca fraldas, não é mesmo?

Ever since I gave the dolls to the girls, Marta has been asking to make clothes for her doll. Yesterday she finally sewed her first doll garment! We chose to make a vest as a first project because of its simplicity. We also chose felt as the fabric because it doesn’t fray or need to be hemmed. I helped her with cutting the fabric to the right size to fit the doll and she did all the stitching, including the pockets. I’m so amazed at how big and capable this girl is becoming. And, with the new vest, the doll was ready to join her friends for the afternoon tea!

Desde que eu dei as bonecas para as meninas, Marta tem pedido para fazer roupas para a boneca. Ontem ela finalmente fez a sua primeira peça. Nós escolhemos fazer um colete porque é um projeto simples. Para o tecido escolhi o feltro, por não desfiar e não precisar de bainha. Eu cortei os pedaços do tamanho certo para caber na boneca e a Marta costurou, inclusive os bolsos. É muito incrível vê-la crescer e desenvolver novas habilidades. E, de colete novo, a boneca ficou pronta para se juntar as amigas para o chá da tarde!

Because of our trip to Brazil I didn’t have much time to prepare for Easter in advance. So everything I did this year was pretty much last minute. I started on the knitted bunnies on Friday evening and finished them Saturday night. Knitting was easy-peasy, but shaping the bunnies was a bit more challenging for me. I wanted them to be standing up, but they only wanted to graze… so grazing they stayed. I used this tutorial for Just Sew and So.

On Saturday I just had to felt a hollow egg. This project came out of the blue and was completely improvised. First I had imagined a hanging ornament on the likes of this one.  Then I changed my mind and thought the egg should open horizontally to  reveal a surprise, kind of like this. I ended up opening the front of the egg with a crafts knife as I had intended originally but  sewed the opening back on the egg “with hinges”, like a door.  I wanted  to put a felted chick inside but as I ran out of time I ended up filling it up with jelly beans.

On Easter Sunday we woke up with squeals of the delight as Marta and Liliana found their treats on our nature table. As always, the Easter Bunny left its messy prints all over the table and the girls loved it. On Sunday we also dyed some eggs just for the fun of it and to include the girls in an activity that is Easter related. I used Martha’s Stewart’s instructions on how to make marbleized eggs which were very easy to follow.

Por causa da nossa viagem ao Brasil, eu não tive muito tempo para preparar a nossa Páscoa. Tudo o que eu fiz esse ano acabou sendo de última hora. Eu comecei a tricotar os coelhinhos na sexta feira a noite e terminei no sabado também a noite. Tricotar foi super fácil, mas dar a forma ao coelhinho já foi bem mais complicado. Eu queria que eles tivessem ficado de pé, mas eles só quiseram ficar em posição de comer grama. Eu usei o passo-a-passo do Just Sew and So.

No sábado eu decid que tinha que fazer um ovo de feltro oco. Esse projeto me veio do nada e foi completamente improvisado. Primeiro eu imaginei um enfeite de pendurar assim como esse. Depois mudei de idéia e achei que o ovo deveria abrir horizontalmente e revelar uma surpresa, tipo esse aqui. Eu acabei abrindo a frente do ovo como na minha primeira idéia, mas costurei a tampa de volta no ovo com “dobradiças”, como uma porta. Eu queria ter colocado um pintinho também de feltro, mas como acabou o meu tempo eu coloquei Jelly Beans mesmo.

No domingo de Páscoa nos acordamos com as exclamações de alegria da marta e Liliana quando acharam as surpresas que o coelhinho da Páscoa tinha deixado. Como sempre, o danado do coelhinho deixou uma boa bagunça na mesa com as suas patinhas sujas. Mas as meninas adoram! No domingo, para incluir as meninas em alguma atividade relacionada com a Páscoa,  nós também tingimos ovos usando corante alimentar. Eu usei as intruções da Martha Stewart de como fazer ovos mamorizados, bem fácil.

And here they are! Three dolls ready and well loved. It was such a joy to make those Waldorf dolls and it is an even grater joy to see Marta and Liliana enjoying them so much. Liliana named hers Mirabella inspired by the book Mirabelle by Astrid Lindgren. Marta decided she wanted to be able to keep changing her doll’s name for each different play, but settled for Lily for now.  It was kind of sad to leave them behind and the girls did ask if they could bring them in our trip, but now they have the dolls to look forward to when we return to Canada. The pajama doll is a gift to my niece that I decided to make kind of last minute. For a while I was in that space in which I wasn’t sure I was going to have it ready before the trip, but she made it. She’s right here in Brazil with me and next week she’ll be taken to her forever home.

E cá estão! As três bonecas prontas e já muito amadas. Eu curti muito o processo de fazer as bonecas e me dá ainda mais alegria ver a Marta e a Liliana brincando com elas. Liliana deu o nome de Mirabela à sua boneca, inspirada pelo livro Mirabelle por Astrid Lindgren. Marta decidiu que quer dar nomes diferentes à sua boneca a cada brincadeira nova, mas chamou-a Lily por agora. Foi um pouco triste deixar as bonecas para trás, e as meninas perguntaram se podiam trazer a boneca na viagem mas em compensação elas tem as bonecas novas esperando por elas quando voltarmos ao Canadá. A boneca de pijama é um presente de última hora que fiz para a minha sobrihna. Por um tepo fiquei sem saber se conseguiria ou não acabá-la antes da viagem, mas deu tudo certo. A boneca está prontinha e aqui no brazil com a gente. Semana que vem ela será levada para sua residência permanene.

Our workshop came to an end this past Tuesday. We met once a week for five weeks and I worked pretty intensely to be able to finish my two dolls (and the third one I started later) before our trip to Brazil. I had such a great time both making the dolls and working with a very nice group of women. It was amazing to see all those dolls taking shape and personality. Though we all used the same materials and techniques each doll came out completely unique.  On the last photo you can see our teacher Annette holding my two dolls. One is finished and the other one just missing the shaping of her feet. I’ve waited for so long to make those dolls and I’m so grateful to have been able to take this course with her as my teacher. A oficina de bonecas terminou na terça feira. Foram cinco aulas, uma vez por semana, mais muito trabalho em casa para eu para poder terminar as minhas duas bonecas (mais a terceira que eu comecei depois) antes da nossa viagem para o Brasil. Eu aproveitei muito não só as aulas mas como a companhia de um grupo de mulheres muito legais. Foi muito interessante ver todas as bonecas tomando forma e personalidade. Apesar de termos usado os mesmos materiais e as mesmas técnicas, cada boneca e completamente única. Na última foto você pode ver a nossa professora Annette segurando as minas duas bonecas, Uma está pronta e a outra só falta a forma do pé. Eu esperei tanto por essa oportunidade para fazer as bonecas e estou muito agradecida de ter podido participar dessa oficina com a Annette como professora. Obrigada Annette!

Those dolls are taking shape and I’m so very excited about them. The body for Marta’s doll is all done but for the shaping of the feet. And she needs a face, of course! Liliana’s has now arms and legs are on the way. On the last pictures you can see the arms in place.  I’m posting here pictures of two weeks worth of work so I can track my process. The hair needs trimming in both dolls. The styling is just so I could get a sense of what is possible.
 

As bonecas estão tomando forma! A boneca da marta já está com o corpo prontinho, faltando apenas a modelagem dos pés e o rosto. A boneca da Liliana já tem braços e as pernas estão a caminho. Na última foto você pode ver os braços no lugar. Essas fotos refletem duas semanas de trabalho. O cabelo das duas bonecas precisam ser aparados, o estilo foi só para eu poder ver as possibilidades.

I’m actually a bit further ahead on both dolls, and have started a third one! I only need to get them photographed. Here you can see what we have done in class last week. The hair is ready but hidden by a surgical sock so I could work on the arms. The arms are now in place and the legs are starting to take shape. You can see teacher’s  hands demonstrating how to prepare the wool for arms and legs.

Na verdade as minhas bonecas já estão bem mais adiantadas, e eu comecei uma terceira! Eu só preciso é fotografar. Aqui você pode ver no que estávamos trabalhando na aula da semana passada. O cabelo já está no lugar, mas está escondido para qu poder trabalhar nos braços. Os braços já estão no lugar e as pernas estão começamdo a tomar forma. Você posde ver aa mãos da Anette, a nossa professora, demonstrando como prpaprar a lã para estofar braços e pernas.

It has been a long time since I’ve been wanting to make a doll for my girls. Since before we moved to Canada four years ago, actually. But only now Marta and Liliana are at an age that they not only play beautifully with dolls but they can also appreciate that I’m making one especially for them. One for each of them, I meant. Yes, I just had to jump knee deep into it and make two at the same time. Can’t keep it simple! There are plenty of very good online tutorials and books out there, but one of the reasons that also took me so long to get started is that I wanted to learn from someone with experience in making Waldorf dolls. There’s nothing like being shown how to do something and being able to ask questions, plus of course, the enriching social exchange with the teacher and other women in the group.  So, finally, this year my opportunity came along and I grabbed it straight away.  Progress is slow, but it is simply amazing to watch the dolls coming into existence. Each new step adds some personality to it. It’s quite amazing that the slightest tilt in the head already hints to a human expression. I never imagined the dolls had such an amazing anatomy! Tem muito tempo que eu ando querendo fazer uma boneca para as minhas meninas. Desde antes de mudarmos para o Canada há quatro anos atrás. Mas só agora a Marta e a Liliana estão na idade em que não somente brincam de boneca mas também sabem apreciar o fato de que eu estou fazendo uma especialmente para elas. Uma para cada uma, eu quis dizer. Pois é, em vez de simplificar…  Há vários paps na web e também muitos livros por aí, mas uma das razões porque eu demorei tanto tempo para começar foi porque eu queria aprender com alguém que tenha experiência em fazer bonecas Waldorf. Não há nada como aprender com quem faz, observando e podendo fazer perguntas.  E claro, ainda aproveitando do contexto social tão enriquecedor que é trabalhar com outras pessoas. Finalmente minha oportunidade chegou e eu a agarrei de imediato. O progresso é lento, mas é incrível de se ver as bonecas começando a tomar forma. Um traço de personalidade emerge com cada etapa da criação. Uma mínima inclinação na cabeça já dá a boneca uma qualidade humana. Eu nunca imaginei que as bonecas tivessem uma anatomia tão incrível!
