hands follow heart

The nice thing about making something while traveling is the memory that becomes attached to the finished object. Even if they turn out a bit wonky I still love them for holding that little precious moment in time. Plus I couldn’t  not work with my hands just after having finished the three dolls. I would probably suffer terribly from withdrawal symptoms!

As I didn’t have time to plan in advance I found myself restless on packing day. I had no clue of what to take for the trip. I didn’t have a pattern/yarn combo ready for a knitting project, plus when it’s summer in Brazil you don’t really want to get anywhere near wool. In the end I cut a square of linen and chose a few colours of embroidery floss and decided they would become a pillow case.  I came up with a mandala-like design for the pillow and I’m pretty excited about it. It’s still going to take me a while to finish it but I look forward to the ready piece.  I also took a crochet hook with me because cotton is easy to work with in the hot weather. In Brazil I found an easy pattern for a doily and some vibrant cotton yarn. This one I’ve just finished but must say that the results didn’t quite live up to my expectations. And lastly I took my portable watercolours and though I didn’t paint much I thoroughly enjoyed my few attempts. My hands were plenty busy for those three weeks!

A coisa boa de se fazer artesanato durante a viagem é a memória que fica vinculada ao objeto acabado. Mesmo que eles saiam um pouco tortinho eu ainda os amo pelos momentos preciosos a que eles remetem. E ainda por cima eu não poderia simplesmente não fazer nada com as mãos principalmente depois de ter terminado as três bonecas. Eu provavelmente morreria de síndrome de abstinência.

Como eu não tive tempo de planejar, no dia da viagem fiquei doida sem saber o que levar. Eu não tinha nenhum conjunto fio;receita de tricô pronto, mas mesmo que tivesse trabalhar com lã no verão do brasil é impossível. Por fim eu cortei um quadrado de linho, escolhi algumas cores de fio de bordar e decidi que faria uma capa para almofada. Eu desenhei um tipo de mandala para a capa e até que fiquei animada para ver o trabalho acabado. Ainda falta um bom bocado, mas eu chego lá. Eu também acabei levando uns ganchos de crochê porque com algodão é mais fácil trabalhar no calor. No Brasil eu achei uma receita bem simples e um fio de cor bem vibrante. Pena que o trabalho acabado não ficou lá grandes coisas. E por último eu levei a minha aquarela portátil e apesar de não ter pintado muito eu curti as minhas tentativas. Minhas mãos se ocuparam bastante naquelas três semanas!

So I have shown you Rio’s natural beauty and also some of the fun things I managed to do while we were in Brazil. But another big highlight of our trip was, of course, family.  How precious is it to see the three cousins together? And one very happy grandma? It is priceless!

Bom, eu já mostrei algumas das belezas nautrais do Rio também as coisas legais que fizemos quando estivemos lá no Brasil. Mas a outro ponto alto da viagem foi, claro, a família. Quão precioso é ver as três primas juntas? E uma vovó muito feliz? Não tem preço!

Now that we are back and rested from our long trip I can look back at the highlights of our stay in Brazil. One of them was, of course, to be in Rio.  I love Rio. I grew up there and it doesn’t matter how long I stay away it lives in me. In the last post you can see some of Rio’s natural beauty. I just can’t get over the rock formations and the contrast between the mountains and the sea. Its natural beauty is stunning.

When I’m there with the children and visiting family,  it’s not so easy to do and to see everything I want. But here are a few places that I was happy to re-visit or get to know for the first time.
 

A stroll around Leblon, with a especial break at the Rio-Lisboa bakery just to remind me of the old days when I used to practice Tai Chi at Floresta da Tijuca every weekend and come here for breakfast afterwords.

A visit to the brand new MAR -Museu de Arte do Rio, located in the port zone in Rio’s centre. This is part of a revitalization project around that area of the city.  They have done a great job in combining new and old architecture, not well depicted in my picture, sadly. At this time the mueum is hosting four very interesting exhibitions. One about the city if Rio over 400 years focusing on works of art that have come to symbolize the landscape, the second one is a collection of art from eight important art movements throughout history, the third one is about how the art movements influenced Brazilian art and the forth is about urban, social and cultural transformation with cities as the stage or stimulus for the art.

 Once in the centre of Rio I had to pay a visit to this area called the Saara. It’s a section of downtown where you can find anything you may think of. They are narrow roads, packed with old buildings, people and stuff.
 

A dear friend took me out to this beautiful new restaurant and cinema complex that used to be a rowing club and stadium.  It looks over a lagoon, the Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas. Again, the picture doesn’t make it justice, but the view from the balcony where we ate is breathtaking!

The last place I was happy to re-visit was Praia Vermelha, home to the majestic Sugar Loaf. We didn’t go up on the cable cars this time, but just enjoyed the view from the ground before joining my father to celebrate his 70th birthday!

Agora que já estamos de volta em casa e descansados da longa viagem fica mais fácil olhar para trás e ver quais foram os pontos altos da viagem. Um deles foi, claro, estar no Rio. Eu amo o Rio.  Nascida e criada lá, não importa quanto tempo eu passe longe. O Rio vive em mim. No post passado você pode ver algumas das belezas naturais do Rio. Não me canso das formações rochosas e do contraste entre o mar e as montanhas. Sua beleza natural é magnífica.

Quando estou lá com as crianças e visitando a família, nem sempre é fácil ir a todos os lugares que tenho vontade. Mas aqui estão alguns que fiquei muito feliz de poder conhecer ou rever.

Um passeio pelo Leblon, com uma parada especial na Rio-Lisboa, para relembrar os velhos tempos quando eu fazia Tai Chi todo o fim de semana na Floresta da Tijuca e vinha tomar café da manhã aqui.

Uma visita ao novíssimo MAR – Museu de Arte do Rio, na Praça Mauá, zona portuária do Rio. Ele faze parte do projeto de revitalização do centro do Rio e foi inaugurado dia 2 de março. Fizeram um ótimo trabalho combinando o velho e o novo na arquitetura, pena que minha foto não faz jus a beleza que é. Eles estão com quatro exposições muito bem montadas.

Uma vez no centro, nãp pude deixar de visitar o Saara, onde você acha qualquer coisa! São uma série de ruas estreitas lotadas pr[edios antigos, de gente e de coisas.

Uma amiga me levou para conhecer o Lagoon, um novo complexo de cinemas e restaurantes one antes funcionava o Clube de Remo da Lagoa. A vista da Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas é de tirar o fôlego de bonita!

O último lugar que fiquei feliz de revisitar foi a Praia Vermelha, onde fica o Pão de Açúcar. Dessa vez nós não subimos mas curtimos a vista do chão antes de encontramos meu pai para comemorar seus 70 anos!

Those past three weeks have flown by. Tomorrow we say good bye to Brazil and head back to our home in Canada. We had a wonderful time in Rio and also in Rio Grande do Sul where we spent a week between the city  of Porto Alegre and the country side. As always, this has been a time of intense and delightful social interactions catching up with family and friends. Now it is time to switch our inner thermostat and face the cold weather that still awaits us in the northern hemisphere. But I miss home and i’m happy to be going back to Canada. We will be here again next year for new adventures, for sure!

Essas três últimas semanas passaram voando. Amanhã nós nos despedimos do Brasil e retornamos para a nossa casa no Canadá. A nossa estadia no Rio foi maravilhossa, assim como a semana que passamos no Rio Grande do Sul entre Porto Alegre e a serra gaúcha. Como sempre, tivemos a agenda lotada de compromissos sociais revendo família e amigos. Agora é hora de reajustar o nosso termostato interno para voltarmos ao frio que nos aguarda no hemisfério norte. Mas a saudade de casa é grande e voltaremos felizes. Ano que vem estaremos de volta para nova aventuras, com certeza!

We are back from our trip to Philly.  Warren was sick pretty much during all our staying there, poor guy. It seems he had the same thing as I did, only it is taking much longer for him to recover.  Not fun to be sick when traveling, but being at his mum’s place at least he could rest comfortably. The girls, Grandma and I had a good time visiting favorite places like the Please Touch Museum and the Tree House Cafe and new places like the Insectarium. We so wanted to enjoy the outdoors more (and we tried) but sadly it was so hot there last week that it was hard to stand the heat. We also did a lot of swimming in the pool where Perky lives and Marta is almost swimming by herself! This was also a productive trip for me and I managed to finish two pair of socks, one form Marta and one for Lili! It’s nice to be back at home and this is pretty much where we’re going to be for the rest of the Summer.

Estamos de volta da nossa viagem a Filadélfia. Warren ficou doente durante toda a nossa estadia lá, coitado. Parece que ele teve a mesma coisa que eu tive, só que tá demorando muito mais tempo para ficar bom. É muito chato ficar doente no meio da viagem, mas pelo menos ele estava na casa da mãe e pôde descansar com conforto. As meninas, grandma Perky e eu nos divertimos visitando alguns dos locais favoritos das meninas como o “Please Touch Museu” e o “Tree House Café” e também conhecemos o “Insectarium”. Nós queríamos ter feito mais programas ao ar livre, mas tava tão quente que ficou difícil curtir os parques. Também nadadamos bastante na piscina da Perky e a Marta está quase nadando sozinha. Essa viagem até que foi produtiva também, fiz dois pares de meia para as meninas! É bom estar de volta em casa, e é por aqui que vamos ficar pelo resto do verão.

While in Brazil we stayed mostly in Rio but for four days we escaped to the mountains of Minas Gerais (the neighbouring state), to the historic town of Tiradentes.  Tiradentes (his real name was Joaquim Jose da Silva Xavier) was an important figure in Brazilian history and was one of the first personalities to imagine a Brazil separate from Portugal, as an independent republic. He ended up being hanged for conspiring against the crown and the republic would only come about some 100 years after his death in 1792. The town of Tiradentes is also known for being the best well preserved brazilian baroque art centre. Amongst the many churches you can find in town there is the Matriz de Santo Antonio, built in 1710, a beautiful example of the baroque architecture and the second church with the most gold content (in decoration)  in Brazil.  Today Tiradentes also hosts one of the most vibrant crafts communities in the area. You can find exquisite handmade items and workshops in every corner. The most popular materials being wood and textile, mostly weaving. Of course I brought back some beautiful weaving for our new home! But the nicest thing of all was to spend lovely time with the family away from the chaos of the big city!

No Brasil nós ficamos principalmente no Rio, mas por quatro dias nós escapamos para as montanhas de Minas, para a cidade histórica de Tiradentes.  Tiradentes, ou Joaquim José da Silva Xavier, foi uma figura importante na história do Brasil e uma das primeiras personalidades a imaginar um Brasil separado de Portugal, em forma de república. Ele acabou sendo enforcado por conspirar contra a coroa e a proclamação da república só veio a acontecer uns 100 anos após a sua morte em 1792. A cidade de Tiradentes também é conhecida por ser o centro mais bem preservado da arte barroca no Brasil. Entre as muitas igrejas que se encontram pela cidade há a Matriz de Santo Antônio, construída em 1710, um exemplo lindo da arquitetura barroca e a segunda igreja em conteúdos (de decoração) em ouro no Brasil. Hoje Tiradentes abriga uma vibrante comunidade de artesãos na região e a cada canto acham-se lindos objetos feitos à mão principalmente em madeira e fibras têxteis. Claor que eu não podia deixar de trazer lindas mantas e toalhas para a casa nova! Mas a melhor coisa da viagem foi passar tempo com a família longe do caos da cidade grande.

to Brazil! I think I mentioned in one of the later posts we were preparing to travel. I was busy getting everything in place but now, five days and 38 C later, I can say we are fully acclimated to the tropics. It has been two years exactly since we were here last. It feels good to be in my hometown, as chaotic as it is, and with family and friends from many walks of life. I feel blessed! Marta and Liliana are having a blast, not even the heat slows them down. Yesterday I took Warren and the girls to see the “Cristo Redentor”  (Christ the Redeemer), the most notorious touristic point in Rio,  aka the Concrete Christ. This amazing 38 metre high statue of the Christ stands 710 metres above the city giving its visitors a stunning view of the beauty of this place. Rio has many, many social problems and infrastructure challenges but no one can deny its natural beauty. I just can’t get over it!

Sim, eu desapareci… vim para o Brasil! Eu acho até que falei num post passado que estava me preparando para viajar. Agora estamos aqui já faz quase uma semana e totalmente aclimatizados aos 38 graus do verão carioca. Fazem exatamente dois anos que estivemos aqui da última vez. è muito bom estar na minha cidade natal, caótica como ela só, rodeada de família e amigos queridos. Me sinto muito abençoada. Marta e Liliana estão se divertindo, nem emso o calor tiram o entusiasmo dessas duas. Ontem levei o Warren e as meninas para verem o Cristo Redentor, o ponto turístico mais notório do Rio. A estátua do Crito tem 38 metros de altura e fica no alto do corcovado a 710 metros acima da cidade dando à seus visitantes uma vista magnífica desse lugar. O Rio tem muitos problemas sociais e deafios de infraestrutura que fazem a vida aqui um pouco complicada, mas ninguém pode negar sua beleza natural. Eu nunca não me canso de admirar o Rio!

And we had a great time in Philadelphia. We left just after Christmas and came back last Sunday and this might have been the longest we’ve stayed there in one stretch. It was a good balance between staying in and enjoying family and going out to explore the city. We re-visited many favourite child friendly places like the Please Touch Museum, the miniature train display at the Morris Arboretum and the Little Treehouse play Cafe. On New Year’s Eve we visited the magnificent Longwood Gardens for the first time and were mesmerized by their Christmas trees displays, water fountain shows and the wonderful children’s garden. We also visited for the first time the Smith Kid’s Play Place and look forward to going back there in the Summer to enjoy the outdoors playground and giant slide. Just before heading back home I had some mama-time and went for  a stroll down South Street area browsing many fabric shops and soaking in the funky neighbourhood in the delightful company of Warren’s sister and her friend. While in Philly I also  celebrated my 41st birthday. Now we’re getting ready for our big trip to Brazil in March. Can’t wait!!!

Estamos de volta de uma ótima estadia na Filadélfia. Saímos daqui no dia seguinte ao Natal e voltamos domingo passado, fazendo dessa a vez que passamos mais tempo lá. Conseguimos equilibrar bem o tempo que passamos em casa cutindo a família com os programas de sair. Nós revisitamos nossos lugares favoritos para ir com as crianças como o Please Touch Museum, o trem miniatura no Morris Arboretum e o café/restaurante Little Treehouse. Na véspera do Ano Novo nós fomos pela primeira vez no Longwood Gardens, um jardim magnífico e ficamos encantados com a exibição de árvores de Natal, shows de chafariz e o jardim infantil. Também fomos pela primeira vez ao Smith Kid’s Play Place e queremos voltar no verão para aproveitar o parque ao ar livre e o escorrega gigante. Antes de voltarmos para a casa eu ainda tive um tempinho só para mim e fui badalar na área de South Street, fuxicando lojas de tecido na ótima companhia da irmã do Warren e sua amiga. Ainda na Filadélfia eu celebrei o meu 41o aniversário! Agora estamos nos preparando para a nossa super viagem ao Brasil em março. Mal posso esperar!!!

I might have missed the Infinite Variety exhibition, but when I was in NYC in August I made it to the American Folk Art Museum anyway and saw a collection of beautiful star-themed quilts. Quite a few dating from the 1800s. I really appreciate the art of modern quilting and what all the new fabric offerings allow for but I’m always in awe of those artists who managed to make amazing things from scraps or repursed fabric, and by hand!!!

Another highlights of my visit to NY were a walk in the High Line park -  a suspended park in New York City,

a visit to MoMA,

a coffee and a loaf of rye, walnut and raisin bread from a fabulous deli in NY, Zabar’s.

I also marvelled at a green wall at the Licoln Cente. Shouldn’t every public space have one of those? What a lovely idea.

And of course, enjoyed my dear cousin and her partner’s company immensily – the first reason of this trip anyway.

Eu posso ter perdido a exposição Infinite Variety, mas quando estive em Nova Iorque em agosto, eu fui ao museu de arte folclórica americana e vi uma fantástica coleção de quilts com tema de estrela. Algumas peças datando de 1800s. Eu curto muito a arte do quilt moderno e tudo que a atual variedade de tecidos disponíves possibilida, mas a minha adimiração fica mesmo com os artistas que conseguem fazer essas maravilhas com retalhos e pedaços de tecidos reutilizados. E a mão ainda por cima!

Outros momentos interessantes da minha viagem foram um passeio no the High Line park, um parque suspenso na cidade, uma visita ao MoMA, e um café e uma pão de centeio com nozes e passas de uma deli fantástica chamada Zabar’s.

E claro, curti a companhia de minha prima e seu marido -  a razão principal dessa viagem!

Since we’ve been back from our three weeks away there has been a stream of events and visitors (expected, half-expected and unexpected!) that have kept me away from this space. Now, it seems, things are getting back to normal.  The Summer holidays feel so far back in the past now. Not only because we’ve been busy but because Autumn is here! It’s getting cooler, darker and the leaves are starting to change. So before my memories of the Summer slip further into the recesses of times past, I’d like to register here that we had an amazing Summer, in special the times we’ve been away to our friends cottage and our last trip to Vancouver Island (via Philadelphia + NYC). We have deepen our friendships, made new ones and got to know new and beautiful parts of this vast country that is Canada.

Desde que voltamos de viagem tivemos um intenso fluxo de eventos e visitantes (esperados, meio esperados e inesperados) que me mantiveram distantes desse espaço. Agora, me parece que as coisas estão voltando ao normal. Parece que já se passaram anos desde as nossas férias de verão, não só porque estivemos ocupados mas também porque já é outono. Oficialmente! O friozinho já é palpável, escurece mais cedo e as folhas estão cada dia mais amarelas. Então, antes que as minhas memórias do verão se vão de vez, eu gostaria de registrar aqui que as férias foram maravilhosas. Principalmente as nossas viagens a casa de amigos e nossa viagem a Ilha de vancouver (via Filadelphia e Nova Iorque). Aprofundamos amizades antigas, fizemos novas e conhecemos uma nova e bela parte de país enorme que é o Canadá.
