And we had a great time in Philadelphia. We left just after Christmas and came back last Sunday and this might have been the longest we’ve stayed there in one stretch. It was a good balance between staying in and enjoying family and going out to explore the city. We re-visited many favourite child friendly places like the Please Touch Museum, the miniature train display at the Morris Arboretum and the Little Treehouse play Cafe. On New Year’s Eve we visited the magnificent Longwood Gardens for the first time and were mesmerized by their Christmas trees displays, water fountain shows and the wonderful children’s garden. We also visited for the first time the Smith Kid’s Play Place and look forward to going back there in the Summer to enjoy the outdoors playground and giant slide. Just before heading back home I had some mama-time and went for  a stroll down South Street area browsing many fabric shops and soaking in the funky neighbourhood in the delightful company of Warren’s sister and her friend. While in Philly I also  celebrated my 41st birthday. Now we’re getting ready for our big trip to Brazil in March. Can’t wait!!!

Estamos de volta de uma ótima estadia na Filadélfia. Saímos daqui no dia seguinte ao Natal e voltamos domingo passado, fazendo dessa a vez que passamos mais tempo lá. Conseguimos equilibrar bem o tempo que passamos em casa cutindo a família com os programas de sair. Nós revisitamos nossos lugares favoritos para ir com as crianças como o Please Touch Museum, o trem miniatura no Morris Arboretum e o café/restaurante Little Treehouse. Na véspera do Ano Novo nós fomos pela primeira vez no Longwood Gardens, um jardim magnífico e ficamos encantados com a exibição de árvores de Natal, shows de chafariz e o jardim infantil. Também fomos pela primeira vez ao Smith Kid’s Play Place e queremos voltar no verão para aproveitar o parque ao ar livre e o escorrega gigante. Antes de voltarmos para a casa eu ainda tive um tempinho só para mim e fui badalar na área de South Street, fuxicando lojas de tecido na ótima companhia da irmã do Warren e sua amiga. Ainda na Filadélfia eu celebrei o meu 41o aniversário! Agora estamos nos preparando para a nossa super viagem ao Brasil em março. Mal posso esperar!!!

I might have missed the Infinite Variety exhibition, but when I was in NYC in August I made it to the American Folk Art Museum anyway and saw a collection of beautiful star-themed quilts. Quite a few dating from the 1800s. I really appreciate the art of modern quilting and what all the new fabric offerings allow for but I’m always in awe of those artists who managed to make amazing things from scraps or repursed fabric, and by hand!!!

Another highlights of my visit to NY were a walk in the High Line park -  a suspended park in New York City,

a visit to MoMA,

a coffee and a loaf of rye, walnut and raisin bread from a fabulous deli in NY, Zabar’s.

I also marvelled at a green wall at the Licoln Cente. Shouldn’t every public space have one of those? What a lovely idea.

And of course, enjoyed my dear cousin and her partner’s company immensily – the first reason of this trip anyway.

Eu posso ter perdido a exposição Infinite Variety, mas quando estive em Nova Iorque em agosto, eu fui ao museu de arte folclórica americana e vi uma fantástica coleção de quilts com tema de estrela. Algumas peças datando de 1800s. Eu curto muito a arte do quilt moderno e tudo que a atual variedade de tecidos disponíves possibilida, mas a minha adimiração fica mesmo com os artistas que conseguem fazer essas maravilhas com retalhos e pedaços de tecidos reutilizados. E a mão ainda por cima!

Outros momentos interessantes da minha viagem foram um passeio no the High Line park, um parque suspenso na cidade, uma visita ao MoMA, e um café e uma pão de centeio com nozes e passas de uma deli fantástica chamada Zabar’s.

E claro, curti a companhia de minha prima e seu marido -  a razão principal dessa viagem!

Since we’ve been back from our three weeks away there has been a stream of events and visitors (expected, half-expected and unexpected!) that have kept me away from this space. Now, it seems, things are getting back to normal.  The Summer holidays feel so far back in the past now. Not only because we’ve been busy but because Autumn is here! It’s getting cooler, darker and the leaves are starting to change. So before my memories of the Summer slip further into the recesses of times past, I’d like to register here that we had an amazing Summer, in special the times we’ve been away to our friends cottage and our last trip to Vancouver Island (via Philadelphia + NYC). We have deepen our friendships, made new ones and got to know new and beautiful parts of this vast country that is Canada.

Desde que voltamos de viagem tivemos um intenso fluxo de eventos e visitantes (esperados, meio esperados e inesperados) que me mantiveram distantes desse espaço. Agora, me parece que as coisas estão voltando ao normal. Parece que já se passaram anos desde as nossas férias de verão, não só porque estivemos ocupados mas também porque já é outono. Oficialmente! O friozinho já é palpável, escurece mais cedo e as folhas estão cada dia mais amarelas. Então, antes que as minhas memórias do verão se vão de vez, eu gostaria de registrar aqui que as férias foram maravilhosas. Principalmente as nossas viagens a casa de amigos e nossa viagem a Ilha de vancouver (via Filadelphia e Nova Iorque). Aprofundamos amizades antigas, fizemos novas e conhecemos uma nova e bela parte de país enorme que é o Canadá.

We’ve been home now for a few days and we are just barely falling back into our routine.  Now we have less than a week for our big travels of this Summer. On Friday we are headed off to Philly for a few days and from there to Vancouver Island in BC for the remaining of August. I’m really looking forward to getting to know the west coast of Canada, as I hear wonders about it! While tiding up the house and getting organised for the trip I keep getting flashbacks of our recent week in the cottage. We had a wonderful time with our lovely friends and I’m ever so grateful for their warmth and hospitality. Thank you Dawne and Tim! Here are some precious moments:

Já tem alguns dias voltamos da nossa semana na casa de lago mas só agora a nossa rotina está entrando nos eixos de novo. No entanto, em menos de uma semana estamos de partida para a grande viagem desse verão. Na sexta-feira vamos para a Filadélfia por alguns dias e de lá para a Ilha de Vancouver, na província de British Columbia aqui no Canada. Eu estou animadíssima para conhecer a costa leste desse país, da qual ouço maravilhas a respeito! Enquanto arrumo a casa e me organizo para a nova viagem, imagens dos bons momentos na casa do lago me vêm a cabeça. Foi tão legal a estadia com nossos queridos amigos Dawne e Tim a quem somos muito agradecidos a tamanha hospitalidade e carinho! Acima alguns momentos preciosos.

Happy New Year everyone! I hope you all stepped into 2011 with your right foot (a Brazilian tradition) and that this new year will be filled with creative energy. Also thank you for all the birthday wishes!

Today is our last day here in Philly and soon we will be flying back home to Toronto. Our week here ended with the completion of the gingerbread house, a project that lasted three days and yielded hours of fun for Marta and Liliana. It all started a few weeks before Christmas when Marta saw a picture of a gingerbread house in a book and was fascinated by it. Warren then told her that aunt Wendy (his sister) is a real master of gingerbread house making and she used to make amazing ones when she was a kid. So when Wendy called us next Marta asked if  she would make one with her. The request caught her by surprise but she was chuffed to be asked. As we all got together here in Philadelphia this week this seemed to be the perfect occasion for this project and though we’re already a bit off season for a gingerbread houseit is not by much. This was a solely aunt and nieces project and neither Warren or I got involved in it. Or until they started to decorate the house and we couldn’t resist!

 
 
Feliz Ano Novo a todos. Espero que coe tenha entrado em 2011 com o pe direito e que esee venha carregado de energia criativa! E tambem, muito obrigada pelos votos de feliz aniversario.

Hoje e o nosso ultimo dia aqui na Filadelfia e jaja nos estaremos voando de volta para Toronto. A nossa semana aqui terminou com a finalizacao da casinha de gengibre, um projeto que durou tres dias e proporcionou horas de diversao para a Marta e Liliana. Tudo comecou algumas semanas antes do Natal quando a Marta viu um desenho de uma casinha de gengibre num livro e ficou fascinada. O Warren entato disse a ela que a  tia Wendy (sua irma) era mestre em fazer essas casinhas de doces e que fazia umas lindas quando era crianca. Na proxima vez que a Wendy nos ligou a Marta perguntou se ela podia fazer uma casa de gengibre com ela. O pedido a pegou totalmente de surpresa mas ela ficou toda prosa. Como todos nos encontramos aqui na Filadelfia essa semana, foi a ocasiao perfeita para esse projeto. Apesar de jaum pouco fora de estacao ainda deu pra pegar carona na onda do Natal.
Esse foi um projeto caompletamente tia-sobrinhas e nem o Warren nem eu patricipamos ate elas comecarem a decorar a casa, ai nao resistimos!

Happy Birthday to me! Yesterday I completed four decades of being on Earth. 40 sounds like a lot of years but fortunately it doesn’t feel that way to me. I had a wonderful day and was showered with so much love and beautiful birthday messages from my family and dear friends, near and far. And because we are here in Philadelphia Warren’s parents took us out for a delicious birthday lunch at Creperie Beaumonde. As a gift from lovely Warren I got a set of massage tokens plus a day in a spa to be redeemed back in Toronto. I think I’ll be 40 again next year!

Parabens pra mim! Ontem eu completei quatro decadas de vida na Terra. 40 e muito ano, mas felizmente nao e assim que me sinto. O meu dia foi muito especial e recebi muito carinho da familia e amigos, perto e longe. E porque estamos aqui na Filadelfia, os pais do Warren levaram-nos para comemorar o meu aniversario na deliciosa Creperie Beaumonde. Do Warren eu ganhei uma serie de vale-massagens e um dia num spa quaado estivermos de volta a Toronto. Acho que eu vou fazer 40 anos ano que vem de novo!

Going into Toronto with two little ones is not something that I usually do spontaneously, but I do welcome the opportunity when it presents itself. Last week I got to know a charming part of town that had already captured my imagination when I read this post (and followed all the links!) almost a year ago. It was actually a coincidence that I went to visit a friend who has recently moved to Leslieville. Living in suburbia – the twilight zone between the city and the countryside – for a year and a half now, I truly appreciated just walking on the streets, browsing the shops, cafés, observing people and how different the social interactions are in the city than in the suburbs. Not far from my friend’s house there is this lovely, totally child friendly cafe called Lil’ bean n’ green café in which we had a very nice lunch while the children played at the play area in the back. We then walked to her local yarn shop, The Purple Purl, which is a gem of a yarn shop with the yummiest selection of yarn. It has a great atmosphere and the extra bonus of having a little corner with some toys for the little ones to be entertained while mama delights in the yarns! Before heading back home we played in the local playground for a little bit. I actually missed living in the city. Now, the downside of the day was that it took us 1hour and 20 minutes to get back home on a route that takes 30 minutes tops when there is no traffic. It reminded me that, though in suburbia,  I’m actually happy with the compromise of living near Warren’s work and the children’s school.

Ir a Toronto com duas crianças pequenas não é uma escolha que eu faço espontâneamente, mas eu aceito a oportunidade quando ela se apresenta. Semana passada eu conheci uma parte da cidade bem chramosinha que já havia capturado a minha imaginação há quase um ano e meio atrás quando li esse post (e segui todos os links!). Na verdade foi uma coincidência, pois eu fui visitar uma amiga que se mudou recentemente para Leslieville. Morando no subúrbio – essa zona indefinida entre a cidade e o campo – já há um ano e meio, eu curti muito andar pelas ruas da cidade e olhar as lojas, os cafés, observar as pessoas e notar como as interações sociais na cidade são diferentes de nos subúrbios. Perto da casa da minha amiga tem esse café super aconchegante, e totalmente voltado para crianças, chamado Lil’ bean n’ green café no qual almoçamoes enquanto os meninos brincavam na parte de trás do restaurante. Depois nós caminhamos até a loja de fios local chamada The Purple Purl, que é uma jóia de loja com uma seleção incrível de fios. A atmosfera da loja é super agradável, com espaço para aulas e brinquedos num cantinho para entreter as crianças enquanto as mamães se deleitam em ver fios. Antes de voltarmos para a casa as crianças brincaram um pouco no parque do bairro. Me deu saudades de morrar na cidade. Agora, o lado negativo do dia foi que levamos 1 hora e 20 minutos para voltar para casa num caminho que leva apenas meia hora quando não tem trânsito. Foi só um lembrete de que, apesar de subúrbio, estamos felizes com a escolha de morar perto do trabalho do Warren e da escola das crianças.

Just thought I’d share some beautiful images from our Saturday. My mum is visiting with us and we drove up North to Simcoe county to appreciate the Canadian Autumn colours. It was a beautiful, crisp sunny day and the temperature perfect (so not to scare a Brazilian). I’m so grateful for our visitors because we always take the opportunity to get to know somewhere new. Who’s next?

Achei que seria legal compartilhar algumas imagens bonitas do nosso sábado. A minha mãe está nos visitando e aproveitamos para fazer um passeio mais ao norte e apreciar as cores do outono canadense.  O dia estava lindo, ensolarado e com a temperatura perfeita (para não assustar um brasileiro).
