Here’s the last of the handmade Christmas pressies, coin purses. I’ve actually made four of them but only got to photograph the first before I gave them away. They were all variation on the same theme always using scraps of fabric from previous projects. I love the old zippers I got from Warren’s mum when she gave me a lot of her sewing materials before moving houses. One of the purses was a gift to her, of course.

Essas bolsinhas de moedas são os últimos presentes de Natal feitos a mão. Eu fiz quatro delas, mas só consegui fotografar a primeira. Elas são todas variação do mesmo tema, sempre usando restos de tecidos de projetos anteriores. Eu adoro esse zipper antigo que ganhei da mãe do Warren quando ela me deu boa parte do seu material de costura na mudançc de casas. Uma das bolsinhas foi para ela claro!

I didn’t start those to be Christmas gifts but it took me so long to get them finished that by the time I did I thought they would actually be good presents.  Because Santa brought the girls princess costumes the nightgowns turned out to be princesses’ nightgowns, of course.  What else would a princess sleep in?

I used the same pattern I did for the Summer nightgowns I made last year which is Kwik Sew 3423 and the fabric is cotton flannel. Super easy!

Quando eu comecei a fazer as camisolas não foi com a idéia de dá-las como presente de Natal, mas demorei tanto para acabá-las que foram perfeitas para a ocasião. O papai Noel trouxe para as meninas vestidos e jóias de pricesa, então a camisola virou camisola de pricesa, é claro. O que mais uma princesa usaria para dormir?

Eu usei o mesmo molde das camisolas de verão que fiz ano passado a Kwik Sew 3423. O teciso é flanela de algodão.

It’s a bit late to be talking about Christmas but only now I’m catching up with photographing the presents we made for Marta and Liliana. They are so precious it would be a shame not to document them here. The first present is the beautiful kinder lyre Warren made for the girls. The lyre is a string instrument very widely used in Waldorf kindergartens for its gentle and soothing sound. It is usually brought out and played by the teacher at the beginning of a storytelling or puppet show session. It is tuned to the pentatonic scale which makes any combination of notes a pleasant and harmonic sound, and for that reason it makes for a perfect child’s first instrument.  In our house the lyre resides in the girls bedroom but it’s not to be played with by them yet. First we want to develop in them a respect for the instrument, so every night before bedtime story we bring the lyre out with reverence and play a very simple tune that Warren wrote words for. Little by little they are getting that an instrument is not a toy, they love to be part of the process of getting it in and out of its case and eventually they sit on our laps and we let them strum the strings very gently as they show interest.

When Warren finished the lyre he asked me to make a case for it, so I did. I really enjoyed the process of sewing without a pattern and having to design it from scratch. It was challenging and rewarding at the same time. I made a few mistakes but still enjoyed the final result, it’s full of character! The pocket you see on the outside is to hold the tuner.

Já tá um pouco tarde para ainda estar falando de Natal mas só agora eu estou tendo tempo de fotografar os presentes que fizemos para a Marta e a Liliana. Eles sáo tão preciosos que seria uma pena não documentá-los aqui. O primeiro presente é uma linda lira feita pelo Warren. A lira é um instrumento de cordas muito usado nos jardins de infância Waldorf pelo seu som tão suave e gentil. Geralmente ela é tocada pela professora no início da sessão de contar história ou do show de marionete. Ela é afinada de acordo coma escala pentatônica que faz qualquer combinação de notas soar harmônica, por isso ela também é considerada um primeiro instrumento perfeito para crianças. Em casa a lira mora no quarto das meninas mas não está lá para elas brincarem ou a tocarem ainda. Primeiro queremos desenvolver nas meninas um senso de respeito ao instrumento. Toda noite antes da história a gente pega a lira com reverência e toca uma melodia muito simples para qual o Warren escreveu a letra. Pouco a pouco as meninas estão entendendo que um instrumento não é um brinquedo. Elas adoram participar do processo de pegar a lira, tirar do estojo, guardar de novo. De vez em quando elas sentam no nosso colo e a gente deixa elas tocarem uma nota ou duas quando demonstram interesse.

Quando o Warren terminou a lira ele pediu para eu fazer um estojo e assim eu fiz. Eu curti muito o processo de costurar sem molde e ter que desenvolvê-lo do zero. Foi ao mesmo tempo um desafio e um prazer. Há vários erros no projeto mas ainda assim eu estou feliz com o resultado final, tem personalidade! O bolso que você vê na frente é para guardar o afinador.

Even though we did a lot of outings while in Philadelphia I knew we were going to have a lot of home time too. So I armed myself with an assortment of crafts to keep me busy on those idle times. At the airport, still in Toronto I started a pair of socks for me. Yes, everyone got one for Christmas but me, so I had to catch up. I finished them in the first five days. The other three projects were vests like the one I made for Marta’s kindergarten. It all started when Warren saw Marta’s vest and declared he wanted one too. Great, one Christmas present sorted. Only I couldn’t finish it on time, so I brought it along to Finish it up. Did I finish it? Not yet because I also started one for Liliana and one for myself, of course! For his I need to place the pockets and buttons and for Lili I need to crochet the bottom edge and place a zipper. Mine, I only managed to cut the sweater. I ‘ll be busy in the next few days finishing them up so everyone is cosy and warm now that the temperatures are really dropping.

Mesmo com todos os programas que fizemos na Filadélfia eu sabia que teríamos muito tempo em casa também. Então eu me preparei com uma porçao de projetos para me ocupar quando estivéssemos de bobeira. No aeroporto, ainda em Toronto, eu comecei um par de meias para mim. Sim, todo mundo ganhou um par de meias de Natal, menos eu. Não podia ficae para trás. Elas ficaram prontas nos primeiro cinco dias. Os outros três projetos foram coletes como o que eu fiz para a escola da Marta. Tudo começou quando o Warren viu o colete da Marta e declarou que queria um também. Ótimo, mais um presente de Natal resolvido.  Mas como eu não consegui terminar há tempo eu o touxe na viagem. Consegui terminar? Ainda não porque eu também comecei um para a Liliana e um para mim, claro. Para o o do Warren eu preciso colocar os bolsos e os botões e pro da Lili preciso fazer a borda de baixo e colocar um zipper. O meu… só consegui cortar no formato. Estarei ocupada nos próximos dias terminando os coletes para todo mundo ficar quentinho agora que a temperatura não pára de baixar.

I just finished this vest for Marta. All children in the kindergarten will have  a similar one to wear in the classroom during the Winter months. A few weeks ago the teacher instructed us parents on how to felt a wool sweater and take it back to the class  so she could cut the vest to the child’s size. The vest then returned home for the parent to add some sort of embellishment. It could be as simple as a blanket stitch around the edges or a appliques and borders.  It was also an important part of the process that the child would see you working on her vest. Marta was very excited to see hers taking shape and tomorrow she’ll take it back to her class to keep her cosy inside as the temperatures drop outdoors. Isn’t that a wonderful project to have handmade vests made by their parents and teacher for each child in the classroom? So special. I love it!

Eu acabei de terminar esse colete para a Marta. Todas as crianças do jardim da infância terão uma parecida para usar dentro da sala de aula durante os meses do inverno. Há algumas semanas atrás a professora instruiu os pais como encolher um casaco de lã (feltrar) e depois trazê-lo para escola para que ela cortasse o colete no tamanh da criança. O colete então retornou a casa para que o pai ou mãe adicionasse alguma decoração. Podia ser uma simples borda, ou um bolso, ou motivos. Uma parte importante do processo era que a criança visse o pai ou mãe trabalhando no seu colete. Marta ficava sempre animada ao ver seu colete tomar forma e amanhã ela irá levar o dela de volta para a escola para mantê-la quentinha dentro da sala enquanto a temperatura só cai lá fora. Não é um projeto incrível que cada criança tenha um colete feito a mão pelos próprios pais na sala de aula? Super especial!

At the beginning of the year Marta’s teacher asked parents for help in making new clothes for the dolls in the Kindergarten classroom.  As my knitting has been kind of dormant lately I offered my sewing skills instead (but I did knit one pair of doll socks!). It took me about three or four weeks to get those little garments ready, and they were actually easy to make for the most part but for some fiddly bits like the sleeves in the dresses. I wish I could share with you the pattern for the coat, bonnet and dress but I gave it back without taking a picture or even writing the name/number down. It was an ancient old McCalls, I think. The sleeping sac is my own design if you can call cutting up a felted sweater just by eyeing the doll a design! Also note that the pink dress, coat and bonnet were made for a 18″ doll so they look rather big in our 14″ doll at home.

I delivered them to the teacher last week and have heard that the dolls have already received them and that the doll’s corner has been re-enlivened by their arrival. Simple things like that make me very happy!

No início do ano a professora da Marta pediu aos pais dos alunos alguns de nós poderia/gostaria de fazer roupas novas para as bonecas da sala do jardim da infância. Como o meu tricô anda meio adormecido eu ofereci, ao invés,  minhas habilidades com a maáquina de costura (mas eu tricotei um par de meia para as bonecas!). Eu levei umas três ou quatro semanas para fazer todas as peças, e foi relativamente fácil apesar do tamanho pequeno e das mangas dos vestidos. Eu adoraria compartilhar o o molde do vestido, casaco e  chapéu, mas eu o devolvi antes de fotografar ou mesmo anotar o nome e o número. O saco de dormir é criação minha e foi feito com um casaco de lã feltrado. O vestido cor de rosa, o casaco e o chapéu foram feitos para uma boneca de 18 polegadas e por isso ficaram grandes nas fotos na nossa boneca de casa, de 14 ploegadas.

Eu entreguei as roupas para a professora na semana passada e já soube que as bonecas as receberam e que o cantinho das bonecas ganhou vida nova com a chegada do novo guarda-roupa. Coisas simples assim me fazem muito feliz!

… would like to invite you to The Toronto Waldorf School Candlelight Fair that takes place in two weeks time, on the 19th of November. The fair is aimed at young children and their families and is a magical wonderland with lots of activities for the little and not so little ones.  Each grade is responsible for an activity and for a community table where they will be selling crafts made either by the children or their parents to raise funds for the school. You guessed it! The gnomes are made by the kindergarten parents for the fair. Aren’t they gorgeous? Those are the ones I made, but there’s an army of more than 100 of them ready for the fair. The event is not restricted to the scholl families and is open to the public. If you’re in the area and are interested in participating it is from 11 am to 4 pm. Here’s a link to the poster. (Please note that the correct time is from 11 and not from 10 am as  the poster says!)

You might also like to know that on the same day, also at the school,  there will be an Arts & Crafts market with over 40 artisans selling their beautiful and high quality ware (I’ve seen a preview!).  With the Holiday season approaching this is an excellent opportunity for finding that unique gift for the loved ones in your life. Esse casal muito simpático gostaria convidar você para a Candlelight Fair na escola Waldorf de Toronto.  A feira é um evento direcionado ao público infantil  que transforma a escola num mundo mágico com várias atividades para os pequenos e os não tão pequenos.  Cada série é responsável por uma atividade e também por uma banca onde vendem artesanato que foi priduzido ou pelos próprios alunos ou seus pais com objetivo de levantar fundos para a escola. Ha! Adivinhou. Esses gnomos tão lindinhos estão sendo produzidos pelos pais, ok mães, das crianças do jardim da infância. Esses da foto fui eu quem fiz, mas tem um batalhão de mais de 100 deles prontos para a feira. O evento não é restrito só aos alunos e famílias da escola, é público e se vocês estiver na área e interssado vai de 11 da manhã as 4 da tarde. Aqui para o cartaz.

Talvez te interesse saber que no mesmo dia, também na escola, acontecerá um mercado de artesanato com mais de 40 artesãos e seus produtos. Uma excelente oportunidade para achar aquele presente único e diferenciado para as pessoas queridas na sua vida! O mercado começa as 9 e vai até as 6 da tarde. Aqui para o cartaz.

With my sparse Summer blogging I still haven’t managed to write about all that I’ve been working on. But before we leave for our long trip I thought I’d share at least my latest project: a baby quilt. This was actually a collaborative project done with the help of other seven women.  This happened as part of a baby shower I offered to one of my dear friends here in Toronto. It was a different kind of baby shower, one focused on the Mama to be, with planned activities to give her support and encouragement for the birth. It wasn’t exactly a Blessingway, but inspired by it. Together we sang, created a quilt and a hanging mobile for the baby, wrote our wishes to our friend on a journal and made bead bracelets for each one of us to be broken after the baby was born. Such a beautiful time we had.

For the quilt activity I asked everyone to bring a square of cotton fabric. During the party each guest placed their square onto the batting and with it said a few words of encouragement to our friend. In the weeks that followed I put the quilt together. Just yesterday I went to visit my friend and her sweet, brand new, little boy. This enchanted quilt has now been delivered and I’m sure it will be well loved!

Com os meus posts tão esparsos nesse verão eu não consegui escrever sobre todos os projetos que tenho feito, mas antes de partimos para a nossa longa viagem decidi compartilhar pelo menos o meu mais recente projeto: uma manta para bebê. Esse foi um projeto participativo, feito com a ajuda de outras sete mulheres. Isso foi parte do chá de bebê que ofereci a minha querida amiga aqui em Toronto. Foi um chá de bebê diferente, um com foco na futura mamãe, com atividades planejadas para dar suporte e coragem no parto. Não foi exatamente um Blessingway, mas inpirado em um. Juntas nós cantamos, criamos a manta e um móbile para o bebê, escrevemos dedicatórias e fizemos pulseiras de contas para serem rompidas após o nascimento do bebê.

Para a manta eu pedi que cada uma trouxesse um quadrado de tecido de algodão. Durante a festa cada convidada posicionou o seu quadrado na coberta e falou algumas palavras de incentivo a nossa amiga. Nas semanas que se seguiram eu finalizei a manta. Ontem fui visitar minha amiga e seu lindo menininho. Essa mantinha encantada foi entregue e tenho certeza que será muito querida.

I was totally captured by the smplicity of  the pillowcase tote I found in the book Simply Sublime Gifts by Jodi Kahn. The idea stuck with me and I looked up the Internet, blogsphere and Flickr for even more pillowcase inspiration. Next, I found myself in the thrift shop checkout with ten pillowcases in my arms. This all happened so timely too, for this is the last week of school for Marta. And guess what I made for the teachers? You are right. Pillowcase totes, of course.  I loved the way they turned out and next time I’ll try to add a lining by sewing with two pillow cases, one inside of the other, to make it a bit more robust. Then I’d like to try this one from the Sewing Dork , this one from the Greetings from the Shady Grove and a pillowcase dress for the girls too.

Eu fui totalmente cativada pela simplicidade da bolsa feita de fronha que eu achei no livro Simply Sublime Gifts by Jodi Kahn. A idéia ficou rodando na minha cabeça e eu procurei por mais idéias na internet, blogesfera e Flickr por mais inspiração. Logo em seguida eu me encontro no caixa do brechó com dez fronhas nos braços. Tudo isso aconteceu com um timing perfeito, pois essa é a última semana de aula da Marta. E adivinha o que as professoras vão ganhar? Acertou, bolsa feita de fronha. Claro! Eu adorei o resultado e na próxima vou tentar colocar um forro costurando duas fronhas juntas para ficar mais resistente. Depois eu gostaria de tentar essa aqui da Sewing Dork, essa aqui do Greetings from the Shady Grove e um vestido também feito de fronha para as meninas too.

Both Marta and Liliana are in need of new sun hats. A few weeks ago I found a free pattern I really liked and gave it a try. The hat turned out beautiful, really. I loved every bit of it. Only it came out too small for both Marta or Liliana. Oh, how frustrating. I did measure their heads, by the way, and it still came out small. Gotta keep practicing. Not all is lost though and my lovely soon-to-be one year old niece will be the happy owner of this cute hat. That made me happy again!

Tanto a Marta quanto a Liliana precisam de novos chapéus de sol. Há algumas semanas atrás eu achei um molde de graça do qual gostei muito e resolvi experimentar. O chapéu ficou lindo de morrer. Amei cada pedaço dele. A pena é que ficou muito pequeno tanto para a Marta quanto para a Liliana. Que frustração. Mesmo tendo medido, ainda saiu errado. Preciso continuar praticando. Mas nem tudo está perdido e aminha sobrinha flinda vai ser a dona desse chapéu tão fofo. Fiquei feliz de novo!
