I realized I show many more projects that I’m starting or working on then finished ones. Truth be said, some don’t ever get finished, and others take a long time (three years?!) and some others don’t get photographed at all.  And, of course, quite a few get done and photographed but not posted! Let’s fix this right now! Here are two of them: the bathroom mat I was working on recently (mentioned on this post) and a bag I made as a Birthday gift for Marta’s kindergarten teacher (mentioned on this post).

The bathroom mat I finished some three weeks ago. I didn’t follow a pattern but started with 30 chain and then it’s all worked on double crochet (UK) or single crochet (US). I then added a border simple border also dc/sc.

The bag… well, I finished it last October. It’s never too late to show off beautiful things is it? I used a pattern called Serendipity Bag from Fabric Palette and used scraps of fabric I had from different projects. I’m now working on a new one of those bags.

Eu me dei conta de que eu mostro muito mais projetos que estou começando ou em andamento do que projetos acabados. Verdade seja dita, muitos nuncam chegam a ser acabados e outros levam muito tempo (três anos!) e outros não são fotografados. E claro, tem aqueles que que são terminados e fotografados mas não são postados.  Vamos consertar isso agora! Aqui estão dois trabalhos terminados: o tapete do banheiro (mencionado aqui) e uma bolsa que fiz de presente de aniversário para a professora da marta (mencionado aqui).

O tapete eu acabei há umas três semanas atrás. Não usei receita, comecei com 30 correntes e segui com crochê simples até o final. A borda também é feita com crochê simples.

A bolsa… bem, a bolsa eu terminei outubro passado. Nunca é tarde pra mostrar coisa bonita, né? Eu usei o molde Serendipity Baga da Fabric Palette e retalhos de tecidos usados em outros projetos. E agora estou trabalhando em outra bolsa dessas.

Wow, I’m working on my fourth doll. I guess that I need to keep working so I don’t forget how to do it. But also there’s something very fulfilling in creating dolls. I think the play between anticipation and the final result is very compelling to me. This will be a dress up doll just like I made for Marta and Liliana. Same size, actually – around 18″. I’m making it as a end of the year gift to Marta’s kindergarten classroom.  I wanted this a doll to be  a red haired boy with a cheeky face and a twinkle in his eye. Right now I’m working on the hair, but I’m also ready to cut the body and arms just to vary the tasks a bit. I hope he’ll be ready soon. Watch this space!

Sim, estou fazendo a minha quarta boneca. Eu preciso continuar trabalhando para não esquecer como se faz. Mas também tem algo que me dá muita satifação em criar essa bonecas. A relação entre a antecipação e o produto final me fascina.  Essa vai ser uma boneca de vistir, igual as que eu fiz para a Marta e Liliana. mesmo tamnho inclusive -  45 cm. Essa boneca é um presente de final de ano para o jardim da infância da Marta. Eu imaginei a boneca um menino de cabelos ruivos, cara de sapeca e com brilho nos olhos. Nesse momento estou trabalhando do cabelo, mas também estou pronta para cortar o corpo e os braç0s só para variar um pouco. O trabalho tem andado num ritmo bom, e acho que ele ficará pronto logo. Fique de olho!

Ever since I made the dolls for Marta and Liliana they have been asking me to make nappies (diapers) for the them. So yesterday I rolled up my sleeves and got to it. Drafting the pattern and sewing them up was very straight forward but I got stuck deciding whether to use snaps or velcro to secure the nappies on the dolls. I’m not a great fan of velcro though I agree it is very practical and can even mean independence for individuals with impaired abilities. But when it comes to children wear and toys I think velcro robs children of the opportunity to develop some fine motor skills, patience and perseverance that buttons, laces and old fashion shoe buckles do offer.  For this reason I have only used buttons on the dolls clothes so far.  But for the nappies… I did go with velcro. And that was because I made the nappies to be interchangeable between the dolls and they have different waist sizes. And truth be said, the velcro made the nappies look and feel feel more like the nappies my girls know, with that sticker/velcroish fastening. The two girls are now over the moon with the ability to change their babies’ nappies, because you can’t be a real mama if you don’t have nappies to change, can you?

Desde que eu fiz as bonecas para a marta e a Liliana que elas vêm me pedindo para fazer fraldas para as suas bonecas. Então ontem eu arregacei as mangas e mandei brasa. Desenhar o molde e costurar foi fácil, mas aí fiquei empacada com a decisão de usar botões de pressão eu velcro para fechar a fralda. Eu não sou muito fã de velcro apesar de achar prático e até útil, principalmente para pessoas cujas habilidades físicas são limitadas. Mas para roupas de crianças e brinquedos eu acho que o velcro rouba da criança a oportunidade de desenvolver o controle motor fino, paciência e perseverança que o botão, fivela de sapato e cadarços oferecem. Por essa razão eu  até hoje só usei botões nas roupas de boneca.  Mas para as fraldas…  teve que ser velcro. Eu fiz as fraldas para serem usadas pelas duas bonecas, mas elas têm cinturas diferentes. E verdade seja dita, o velcro faz com que as fraldas sejam mais parecidas com as fraldas que as meninas conhecem, que fecham com um mixto de adesivo e velcro. Marta e Liliana estão todas contentes de poderem trocar as fraldas das suas filhas. Claro que você não pode er uma mamãe de verdade se não troca fraldas, não é mesmo?

Ever since I gave the dolls to the girls, Marta has been asking to make clothes for her doll. Yesterday she finally sewed her first doll garment! We chose to make a vest as a first project because of its simplicity. We also chose felt as the fabric because it doesn’t fray or need to be hemmed. I helped her with cutting the fabric to the right size to fit the doll and she did all the stitching, including the pockets. I’m so amazed at how big and capable this girl is becoming. And, with the new vest, the doll was ready to join her friends for the afternoon tea!

Desde que eu dei as bonecas para as meninas, Marta tem pedido para fazer roupas para a boneca. Ontem ela finalmente fez a sua primeira peça. Nós escolhemos fazer um colete porque é um projeto simples. Para o tecido escolhi o feltro, por não desfiar e não precisar de bainha. Eu cortei os pedaços do tamanho certo para caber na boneca e a Marta costurou, inclusive os bolsos. É muito incrível vê-la crescer e desenvolver novas habilidades. E, de colete novo, a boneca ficou pronta para se juntar as amigas para o chá da tarde!

Slowly I’m picking up and finishing a whole bunch of projects that have been parked for one reason or another. This quilt is one of them. The quilt top has been ready since september last year.  In the past three days I have made the back and quilted it. And now I’m in the process of sewing the binding on. I had never free-hand quilted such a large area on my sewing machine and wow, what a big challenge that was! What I had on my mind for a pattern and the end result are completely different. But that’s not to say I didn’t like it, I just had to adjust my expectations! It took me a while to get comfortable and you can see that right there on the irregularity of the stitches. The good thing is that the fabric print is so busy that the irregular stitches don’t stand out so much. I can’t wait to see it finished… and for a massage on my wrist!

Devagarinho eu estou retomando alguns projetos abandonados por uma razão ou outra. Esse quilt é um deles. A parte de cima está terminada desde setembro do ano passado. Nos três últimos dias eu fiz a parte de trás e quiltei a manta.  Agora estou costurando o acabamento. Eu nunca tinha quiltado a mão livre uma área táo grande usando a minha máquina, e nossa, que desafio! O que eu imaginei como padrão para o quilt saiu completamente diferente. Isso não quer dizer que eu não tenha gostado, apenas tive que ajustar a minha expectativa! Levou um tempo até eu achar uma posição confortável e isso é perfeitamente visível na irregularidade dos pontos. A coisa boa é que como a estampa é bem cheia não dá para se notar os pontos tão bem. Tô louca para ver esse trabalho pronto… e por uma massagem no meu pulso!

I join Rae’s Spring Top Sew Along  every year because it is a lovely excuse to sew something for myself. I also get a lot of inspiration from the amazing projects other people post. There are always lots of beautiful patterns I’d love to try out there. Have a look at the photo pool.  So here’s my version of the Schoolhouse tunic designed by Sew Liberated. I used a butter-soft linen I got in one of our visits to Philadelphia. I love linen, I love the tunic and can’t wait to show it off! I only wish it was more springey over here. I had to put a long sleeve shirt under the tunic for the picture and still I was freezing outside.

Todo ano eu me junto ao Spring Top Sew Along da Rae porque é uma ótima desculpa para eu costurar para mim mesma. E também é uma excelente fonte de inspiração ver os projetos que as outras participantes compartilham. Tem vários modelos que eu adoraria experimentar. Dá só uma olhadinha nas fotos. Então, aqui está a minha versão da túnica Schoolhouse criada pela Sew liberated. Eu usei um linho extra macio que comprei na numa das nossas visitas a Filadélfia. Eu amei o resultado e não vejo a hora de estrear o modelito novo. Meu único desejo é que a primavera já tivesse realmente chegado. Eu tive que colocar uma blusa de manga comprida por baixo da túnica para tirar a foto e ainda assim estava congelando lá fora!

In the past two days the temperature has dropped to below 0C and feels like winter all over again. Yesterday school was cancelled and the children were at home, but today…  it’s the perfect day for handwork. I just lit up the fire in the fireplace and I’m ready to get busy. I’m half way through a bath mat I’m crocheting for our bathroom. I brought the cotton yarn from Brazil and so love the blue! I also want to work on my Schoolhouse tunic that I’m making with some lovely linen I got a while ago.  If I finish it in time I’ll enter it on Rae’s Spring Top Sew Along. I’m also posting a picture of the finished doily that I started in Brazil. This one was more about the process, as I’m not so thrilled by the end result.

Nos útimos dois dias a temperatura caiu para abaixo de 0C e tá parecendo que é inverno de novo. Ontem a escola foi cancelada por causa do mau tempo e as crianças ficaram em casa, mas hoje… é o dia perfeito para trabalhos manuais. Acabei de acender a lareira e estou pronta para botar a mão na massa. Eu estou na metade de um tapete de banheiro que estou fazendo em crochê. O fio eu trouxe do Brasil e estou amando o tom de azul. Hoje eu també quero adiantar a minha túnica Schoolhouse que estou fazndo com um linho ótimo que comprei há um tempinho atrás. Se eu acabar a tempo vou participar do Spring Top Sew Along da Rae. Aprioveito também para postar o doily que eu tereminei. Esse projeto valeu pelo processo, porque o resultado final não ficou lá grandes coisas!

And here they are! Three dolls ready and well loved. It was such a joy to make those Waldorf dolls and it is an even grater joy to see Marta and Liliana enjoying them so much. Liliana named hers Mirabella inspired by the book Mirabelle by Astrid Lindgren. Marta decided she wanted to be able to keep changing her doll’s name for each different play, but settled for Lily for now.  It was kind of sad to leave them behind and the girls did ask if they could bring them in our trip, but now they have the dolls to look forward to when we return to Canada. The pajama doll is a gift to my niece that I decided to make kind of last minute. For a while I was in that space in which I wasn’t sure I was going to have it ready before the trip, but she made it. She’s right here in Brazil with me and next week she’ll be taken to her forever home.

E cá estão! As três bonecas prontas e já muito amadas. Eu curti muito o processo de fazer as bonecas e me dá ainda mais alegria ver a Marta e a Liliana brincando com elas. Liliana deu o nome de Mirabela à sua boneca, inspirada pelo livro Mirabelle por Astrid Lindgren. Marta decidiu que quer dar nomes diferentes à sua boneca a cada brincadeira nova, mas chamou-a Lily por agora. Foi um pouco triste deixar as bonecas para trás, e as meninas perguntaram se podiam trazer a boneca na viagem mas em compensação elas tem as bonecas novas esperando por elas quando voltarmos ao Canadá. A boneca de pijama é um presente de última hora que fiz para a minha sobrihna. Por um tepo fiquei sem saber se conseguiria ou não acabá-la antes da viagem, mas deu tudo certo. A boneca está prontinha e aqui no brazil com a gente. Semana que vem ela será levada para sua residência permanene.

Our workshop came to an end this past Tuesday. We met once a week for five weeks and I worked pretty intensely to be able to finish my two dolls (and the third one I started later) before our trip to Brazil. I had such a great time both making the dolls and working with a very nice group of women. It was amazing to see all those dolls taking shape and personality. Though we all used the same materials and techniques each doll came out completely unique.  On the last photo you can see our teacher Annette holding my two dolls. One is finished and the other one just missing the shaping of her feet. I’ve waited for so long to make those dolls and I’m so grateful to have been able to take this course with her as my teacher. A oficina de bonecas terminou na terça feira. Foram cinco aulas, uma vez por semana, mais muito trabalho em casa para eu para poder terminar as minhas duas bonecas (mais a terceira que eu comecei depois) antes da nossa viagem para o Brasil. Eu aproveitei muito não só as aulas mas como a companhia de um grupo de mulheres muito legais. Foi muito interessante ver todas as bonecas tomando forma e personalidade. Apesar de termos usado os mesmos materiais e as mesmas técnicas, cada boneca e completamente única. Na última foto você pode ver a nossa professora Annette segurando as minas duas bonecas, Uma está pronta e a outra só falta a forma do pé. Eu esperei tanto por essa oportunidade para fazer as bonecas e estou muito agradecida de ter podido participar dessa oficina com a Annette como professora. Obrigada Annette!

Those dolls are taking shape and I’m so very excited about them. The body for Marta’s doll is all done but for the shaping of the feet. And she needs a face, of course! Liliana’s has now arms and legs are on the way. On the last pictures you can see the arms in place.  I’m posting here pictures of two weeks worth of work so I can track my process. The hair needs trimming in both dolls. The styling is just so I could get a sense of what is possible.
 

As bonecas estão tomando forma! A boneca da marta já está com o corpo prontinho, faltando apenas a modelagem dos pés e o rosto. A boneca da Liliana já tem braços e as pernas estão a caminho. Na última foto você pode ver os braços no lugar. Essas fotos refletem duas semanas de trabalho. O cabelo das duas bonecas precisam ser aparados, o estilo foi só para eu poder ver as possibilidades.
