hands follow heart

I got those shades as a birthday gift to myself when we were in Philadelphia last December. It was meant to be a joke. I saw them in a antique/miscellanea shop while enjoying a couple of hours on my own browsing the lovely neighbourhood of Germantown. I thought it would be funny to go back and meet Warren and the children wearing something unusual and so not me. The shades would then go to the children’s dress up box. That was the plan. What I wasn’t counting on was the fact that they are actually very good sun glasses. In fact, the best pair I’ve ever had. The children delighted on seeing their funny looking mama (Warren was a bit shocked) and wanted to play with them straight away. But instead of letting them become a toy permanently I decided to adopt them as my sun glasses despite them looking a bit daft on me. So as soon as I had a chance to go to a yarn shop here in Rio I got some cotton yarn and started a case for my new shades. I made up the pattern and if I had to do another one I would definitely add more rows between the top of the case and the tie. But I’m pretty happy with it as it is.  The colours I chose are as daft as the glasses themselves and I think they actually go very well together!

Esses óculos escuros foram um presente de aniversário que eu comprei para mim mesma quando estivemos na Filadélfia em dezembro passado. Era para ser uma brincadeira. Eu vi os óculos numa loja de antiguidades/brechó quando estava passeando a sós nas ruas do charmoso bairro de germantown. Eu achei que seria divertido voltar para encontrar com o Warren e asmeninas vestindo algo engraçado e absolutamente nada a ver comigo. Depois os óculos iriam para a caixa de brinquedos das crianças. Esse era o plano. No entanto eu não estava contando com o fato de os óculos são na verdade muito bons. De fato, o melhor par de óculos escuros que eu já tive. As meninas adoraram ver a mamãe chegando toda engraçada (o Warren ficou meio chocado) e quiseram logo ir brincando com os óculos. Mas ao invés de deixá-los virarem um brinquedo permanente eu decidi adotá-los apesar deles serem meio ridículos em mim. Então, assim que tive a chance de ir a um armarinho aqui no Rio eu comprei fios de algodão e comecei a fazer uma “caixa” de óculos. Eu mesma inventei o modelo, e se tivesse que fazer outra eu com certeza aumentaria o número de carreiras entre a borda do saco  e o cordão. As cores que eu escolhi são tão ridículas quanto os óculos mas eu acho que eles combinam perfeitamente!

The pictures below don’t quite look like Toronto this time of the year. That’s right. We’ve been in Rio now for three days and still adapting to the roasting temperatures. World climate seems to be crazy all over, and it’s not any different here. Tomorrow they are predicting a high of 40 degrees Celsius (104 F)! Thank god we are on holiday and don’t need to be in traffic or at work in this heat. We had a very tiring trip with a ten hour flight and a crazy connection in São Paulo but we made it here in good shape.  It’s been lovely to be back home and enjoying  family and friends and some tropical goodness, like fresh from the tree coconut water. Just delicious! We had a crazy week before we left with all the getting ready for the trip stuff but I managed to get started on a few knitted eggs in preparation for our Spring/Easter nature table for when we return to Canada.

Essas fotos não parecem de Toronto nessa época do ano. É isso mesmo, nós estamos no Rio há três dias e tentando nos adaptar ao calor fora do comum. O clima mundial parece estar louco e não podia deixar de ser diferente por aqui. Amanhã a temperatura está prevista para 40 graus Celsius (104F)! Graças a deus estamos de férias e não precisamos enfrentar trânsito ou trabalho nesse calorão. A nossa viagem foi bem cansativa, com um vôo de dez horas masi uma conexão louca em São Paulo. Mas ainda assim chegamos em boa forma. Tem sido muito especial estar de volta em casa com a família e amigos, e é claro delícias tropicais como água de côco. A semana antes da nossa viagem foi bem cheia com tudo o que tinha para arrumar, mas acabei conseguindo tricotar alguns ovinhos de Páscoa para a nossa mesa da natureza da primavera/páscoa para quanto retornarmos ao Canadá.

A couple of weeks ago we had the wonderful news that my sister is expecting her first child. I just can’t tell you how happy we are for her and her husband. But we’re also happy because our children will have at least one first cousin! I know it is still a bit early (she’s just past 12 weeks) but I couldn’t resist knitting things for the baby. So I made my niece/nephew a Milo vest and a (kind of) matching hat. I was planing a very simple all white vest but as I didn’t have enough yarn I had to improvise the red and beige bottom and sleeve details. Then I ended up with enough red leftover to make a hat. See? One thing leads to the other!

Há umas duas semanas atrás nós recebemos a maravilhosa notícia de que a minha irmã está grávida. Não temos nem plavaras para dizer o quanto ficamos felizes por ela e pelo seu marido. Mas estamos também muitos felizes porque as nossas filhas terão pelo menos um/a primo/a de primeiro grau! Eu sei que está um pouco cedo, pois ela está terminando o terceiro mês, mas eu não pude resistir e já tricotei coisinhas para o bebê. Eu fiz o colete Milo e um chapéu combinando para a minha/meu sobrinha/o. O meu plano era fazer só o colete, branco, assim bem simples. Mas acabou que eu não tinha fio suficiente e tive que improvisar a borda vermelha e bege na barra e nas mangas. Daí acabei com sobras de fio vermelho suficiente para fazer o chapéu. Viu só? Uma coisa leva a outra!

I managed to finish the second child’s seat coverfor Marta and Liliana’s bedroom. This project is now complete. Wehey!!! I thought it would take me much longer to collect left overs to make a new cover, but hey! They keep coming.

Eu consegui acabar a segunda capa para as cadeirasdo quarto da Marta e da Liliana. Agora sse projeto está completo, uhuuuu! Eu achei que ia demorar muito mais até eu conseguir sobras de fios para fazer a nova capa, mas eles foram aparecendo…

My other knitting goal for 2010 is to make a pair of mittens for myself. I had never tuned into them until around September/October last year when they starting popping all over Ravelry. There are so many beautiful designs it will be hard to choose from: playful, stylish, folkloric, modern, traditional. Here are some of my favourite ones:

Minha outra meta no tricô para 2010 é fazer um par de luvas de inverno para mim. Eu nunca tinha prestado muita atenção nelas até setembro ou outubro do ano passado quando elas começaram a pipocar pelo Ravelry. É cada uma mais linda que a outra que vai ser até difícil de escolher. Divertidas, cheia de estilo, tradicionais, modernas, folclóricas… aqui vão algumas das minhas favoritas.

One of my knitting goals for 2010 is to make a throw/blanket for our home. I haven’t decided which yet but I have these two patterns from Plymouth Yarns in mind. As I write I tend more towards the mitered one (left), though a slightly different pattern from the one pictured below, but I’m really going back and forward between the two.

And I will use the gorgeous wool and silk Boku yarn from Plymouth that I got as birthday present from Perky, Warren’s mum:

But first… I MUST finish this throw I started for my mum almost a year ago. It’s the beautiful Perugino Throw from Colinette Yarns. This is quite an easy knit, but because it has five different yarns going at the same time it is hard to knit it while Marta and Liliana are around. Wish me luck!

Uma das minhas metas esse ano, no que diz respeito ao tricô, é fazer uma manta para a nossa casa. Eu tenho em mente dois modelos da Plymouth Yarns, mas ainda não me decidi por qual. No momento a minha tendência é pelo da esquerda, apesar de um pouco diferente da fotografia. Mas eu mudo de idéia a cada dois minutos.

Eu vou usar o fio Boku da Plymouth que a Perky, mãe do Warren, me deu de presente de aniversário. Mas antes… eu tenho que acabar a manta que eu comecei para a minha mãe há um ano atrás: a linda Perugino Throw da Colinette Yarns. Ela até que é bem simples de fazer, mas porque usa cinco fios ao mesmo tempo é muito difícil trabalhar nela quando as crianças estão por perto. Acho que vou precisar mais do que sorte para atingir essa meta!

I managed to finish the socks I was knitting for Marta. They were meant to be ready for Christmas, but other priorities jumped up the queue. I knitted a pair of socks for both Marta and Liliana and again I did it on two circular needles for speed. As I practise it becomes less awkward but unfortunately not as enjoyable as knitting on four needles. I also started a Milo vest for Marta and I was so excited to use an experimental yarn that I’ve had since she was a baby to make something for her. However, I’m completely off the gauge and although knitting for a three year old it looks like it is for a child of seven years of age! I haven’t decided what to do about it yet. I may just carry on and finish it and save for when Marta is older but that seems to be an awfully long time. I could frog it and start it over or frog it and move on to different project. I’m leaning more towards my last option as we’re off to Brazil for two months  in about five weeks time  and there won’t be much time left for Marta to enjoy it. I’m also starting to think that my experimental yarn doesn’t lend itself so well to this pattern. The fabric is too busy looking to really make justice to the beautiful cable pattern.  I have a couple more projects gone wrong recently (will share later) so I hope this is not a trend for the New Year!

Enquanto eu estava na Filadélfia eu consegui acabar o par de meias que eu estava fazendo para a Marta. Era para ter ficado pronto para o Natal, mas outras prioridades furaram a fila. Eu fiz dois pares de meia para a Marta e Liliana e de novo eu usei duas agulhas circulares para ir mais rápido. Quanto mais eu pratico mas fácil fica, mas infelizmente eu ainda prefiro tricotar com as quatro agulhas. Eu também comecei um novo projeto, o colete Milo para a Marta, e estava animadíssima usando um fio experimental que eu tinha guardado desde que ela era bebê. No entanto, a minha tensão está complemtamente errada e apesar de eu estar tricotando o tamanho recomendado para três anos o colete parece que é para uma criança de sete! Eu ainda não decidi o que fazer a respeito. Eu posso acabar o projeto e esperar até a Marta crescer, mas não sei se quero esperar tanto tempo assim. Eu posso desfazer tudo e começar de novo na tensão certa ou  desfazer tudo e começar um projeto diferente. Eu estou mais inclinada a última opção uma vez que iremos para o Brasil em cinco semanas e nem vai dar tempo da Marta usar o colete direito. Além disso eu comecei a achar que o fio experimental não é o melhor fio para esse projeto. O padrão do tecido formado pelo fio não ajuda em nada a ressaltar o cabo tão bonito do modelo. Tem mais uns dois projetos que deram errado recentemente (que mostrarei em outra ocasião), espero que não seja uma tendência para o Ano Novo!

I’m still running against the clock though most of the presents are now finished and wrapped. Yesterday I finished these wind wands for Marta and Liliana. I’ve been wanting to make them for ages and Christmas was an excellent excuse. I got the idea from this wonderful book called ” Creative play for your toddler – Steiner Waldorf expertise and toy projects for 2 -4s ” by Christopher Clouder and Janni Nicol. I also finished Baby’s Winter outfit. Baby was a wedding gift to us from my dear friend Sue McCabe and is well loved by my children. The doll’s clothes  are not exactly a Christmas gift to Marta and Liliana  but Baby will appear fully dressed in her new garments on Christmas day.  This afternoon I’m working on the especial star for tonight for our last Advent ritual and as soon as Marta and Liliana wake up from their nap we’ll make cookies for Santa Claus.

Eu ainda estou correndo contra o relógio apesar de quase todos os presentes estarem prontos e embrulhados. Ontem eu finalmene terminei os círculos de fitas para a Marta e a Liliana. Já havia um tempão que eu queria fazê-los e o Natal foi uma razão excelente. A idéia foi do livro ” Creative play for your toddler – Steiner Waldorf expertise and toy projects for 2 -4s ” por Christopher Clouder and Janni Nicol, que aliás é ótimo e eu super recomendo. Ontem eu também terminei a roupa de inverno da Neném. A Neném foi o nosso presente de casamento feito pela minha querida amiga Sue McCabe e adorada pelas minhas filhotas. As roupas da boneca não são exatamente um presente de Natal para a Marta e a Lili, mas a Neném vai aparecer toda de roupa nova no dia de Natal. Hoje a tarde eu estou trabalhando numa estrela especial para o nosso último ritual do Advento essa noite e assim que as meninas acordarem famos fazer cookies para o Papai Noel.

The time is pressing and I’m hoping I’ll manage to finish all the gifts I’m working on in time for Christmas. Some are finished and just need the final touches, others are almost finished or half way through and some are not even started yet! Whenever Marta and Liliana ask me what I’m doing I tell them I’m helping Santa because he is too busy getting everyones gifts ready. They are not fully aware of the whole Santa Claus bringing them gifts for Christmas so I only hope my story won’t spoil the magic in the future.

Quite a while ago I went to Ikea and got a small table and two small chairs made of pine wood for Marta’s and Liliana’s bedroom. Since then I’ve been wanting to dress the chairs somehow. First I thought a thin cushion with a knitted cover would be nice, then I thought that maybe a quilted cover would be nicer but never really got to work on any of the ideas. Not until I came across Wood & Wool Stool and got really inspired. Even better, this was the perfect project to use up all those small amounts of yarn left over from all my knitting projects. I’m not very good at crochet but I’d learned  how to make a  granny square before so I was able to jump right at it. The big challenge for me was to make the cover fold around the edges of the chair without flaring but even that wasn’t as hard as I imagined.  I’m very pleased with the result and so are the girls. Now I need to start working on the second one.

Há um tempo atrás eu fui a Ikea e comprei uma mesinha com duas cadeiras para o quarto da Marta e da Liliana. Desde então eu tenho pensado em “vestir” as cadeiras de alguma maneira. Primeiro achei que uma almofada finiha com uma capa de tricô seria legal, depois mudei de idéia e achei que uma capa costurada talvez ficasse melhor mas acabei não fazendo nada. Até que um belo dia eu me deparei com Wood & Wool Stool e a inspiração me pegou em cheio. Melhor que isso foi o fato desse ser o tipo de projeto perfeito para usar todas as sobras de fios de lã dos meus projetos de tricô. Eu nem sei fazer crochê muito bem, mas eu já tinha aprendido a fazer um “granny square” antes e pude começar o projeto de imediato. O maior desafio foi fazer a capa virar nas bordas da cadeira sem ficar tudo desbeiçado, mas até isso foi mais simples do que imaginei. Eu fiquei super feliz com o resultado e as meninas também. Agora é só começar a segunda…
