hands follow heart

Even though we did a lot of outings while in Philadelphia I knew we were going to have a lot of home time too. So I armed myself with an assortment of crafts to keep me busy on those idle times. At the airport, still in Toronto I started a pair of socks for me. Yes, everyone got one for Christmas but me, so I had to catch up. I finished them in the first five days. The other three projects were vests like the one I made for Marta’s kindergarten. It all started when Warren saw Marta’s vest and declared he wanted one too. Great, one Christmas present sorted. Only I couldn’t finish it on time, so I brought it along to Finish it up. Did I finish it? Not yet because I also started one for Liliana and one for myself, of course! For his I need to place the pockets and buttons and for Lili I need to crochet the bottom edge and place a zipper. Mine, I only managed to cut the sweater. I ‘ll be busy in the next few days finishing them up so everyone is cosy and warm now that the temperatures are really dropping.

Mesmo com todos os programas que fizemos na Filadélfia eu sabia que teríamos muito tempo em casa também. Então eu me preparei com uma porçao de projetos para me ocupar quando estivéssemos de bobeira. No aeroporto, ainda em Toronto, eu comecei um par de meias para mim. Sim, todo mundo ganhou um par de meias de Natal, menos eu. Não podia ficae para trás. Elas ficaram prontas nos primeiro cinco dias. Os outros três projetos foram coletes como o que eu fiz para a escola da Marta. Tudo começou quando o Warren viu o colete da Marta e declarou que queria um também. Ótimo, mais um presente de Natal resolvido.  Mas como eu não consegui terminar há tempo eu o touxe na viagem. Consegui terminar? Ainda não porque eu também comecei um para a Liliana e um para mim, claro. Para o o do Warren eu preciso colocar os bolsos e os botões e pro da Lili preciso fazer a borda de baixo e colocar um zipper. O meu… só consegui cortar no formato. Estarei ocupada nos próximos dias terminando os coletes para todo mundo ficar quentinho agora que a temperatura não pára de baixar.

When we were away in the Summer I got started in knitting socks as Christmas gifts for all the members of our family. Warren’s was the first one I worked on and I used one of my favourite basic socks pattern, the Basic Ribbed Socks by Kate Atherley. Because we were away I wanted the project to last so I went for the good old four needles. While in Philadelphia Warren’s mum presented me  with a great book called Toe-up Socks for Every Body by Wendy Johnson. I’ve been toying with the idea of learning the toe-up method for a long time so when back home I jumped right in and knitted the Critter Socks pattern for both Marta and Liliana. For those I used two circular needles and for Marta’s I knitted one sock at a time, but for Liliana I knitted the two together.  I’m very pleased with the socks even though my colour work is pretty poor…  in fact I thought it was quite hard do do it on the two circular needles, in especial to carry the unused yarn on the sides where you change needles, I just couldn’t find a way to give the yarn the slack necessary so if you look carefully you’ll see that it is pulling at the sides. Oh well… I’ll have to try something different next time. I’m sure Marta and Liliana will still enjoy the kitty cats and the socks will keep their toesies warm just as well!

Quando estávamos viajando durante o verão eu comecei a tricotar meias para dar de presente de Natal para todos os membros da nossa família. A do Warren foi a primeira que fiz, e usei uma das receitas que mais gosto: the Basic Ribbed Socks por Kate Atherley. Porque estávamos viajando e eu queria que o projeto durasse bastante, optei pelas boas e velhas quatro agulhas. Enquanto na Filadélfia a mãe do Warren me presenteou com o livro Toe-up Socks for Every Body por Wendy Johnson. Eu já vinha querendo aprender o método de fazer meias começamdo pelos dedos do pé há um tempão, então assim que chegamos de volta em casa comecei a Critters Socks para Marta e Lili. Para essas eu usei duas agulhas circulares e para a Marta eu fiz uma de cada vez, e para a Lili fiz as duas ao mesmo tempo. As meias ficaram ótimas apesar do trabalho de cores meio capenga. Mas eu tenho certeza que as meninas vão curtir os gatinhos de qualquer maneira e as meias vão esquentar os pezinhos do mesmo jeito!  Eu totalmente aprovei o método. 

With my sparse Summer blogging I still haven’t managed to write about all that I’ve been working on. But before we leave for our long trip I thought I’d share at least my latest project: a baby quilt. This was actually a collaborative project done with the help of other seven women.  This happened as part of a baby shower I offered to one of my dear friends here in Toronto. It was a different kind of baby shower, one focused on the Mama to be, with planned activities to give her support and encouragement for the birth. It wasn’t exactly a Blessingway, but inspired by it. Together we sang, created a quilt and a hanging mobile for the baby, wrote our wishes to our friend on a journal and made bead bracelets for each one of us to be broken after the baby was born. Such a beautiful time we had.

For the quilt activity I asked everyone to bring a square of cotton fabric. During the party each guest placed their square onto the batting and with it said a few words of encouragement to our friend. In the weeks that followed I put the quilt together. Just yesterday I went to visit my friend and her sweet, brand new, little boy. This enchanted quilt has now been delivered and I’m sure it will be well loved!

Com os meus posts tão esparsos nesse verão eu não consegui escrever sobre todos os projetos que tenho feito, mas antes de partimos para a nossa longa viagem decidi compartilhar pelo menos o meu mais recente projeto: uma manta para bebê. Esse foi um projeto participativo, feito com a ajuda de outras sete mulheres. Isso foi parte do chá de bebê que ofereci a minha querida amiga aqui em Toronto. Foi um chá de bebê diferente, um com foco na futura mamãe, com atividades planejadas para dar suporte e coragem no parto. Não foi exatamente um Blessingway, mas inpirado em um. Juntas nós cantamos, criamos a manta e um móbile para o bebê, escrevemos dedicatórias e fizemos pulseiras de contas para serem rompidas após o nascimento do bebê.

Para a manta eu pedi que cada uma trouxesse um quadrado de tecido de algodão. Durante a festa cada convidada posicionou o seu quadrado na coberta e falou algumas palavras de incentivo a nossa amiga. Nas semanas que se seguiram eu finalizei a manta. Ontem fui visitar minha amiga e seu lindo menininho. Essa mantinha encantada foi entregue e tenho certeza que será muito querida.

Sorry, I’m still on “catch up” mode here… The weekend before last I finally took part on a wool spinning workshop. I waited sooo long for this moment. It has been at least four years since I was first interested in spinning. My inspiration was a group of ladies that would sell their ware in the Stroud’s Farmer’s Market. They didn’t sell the yarn itself but hand knitted items made with their hand spun yarn. Each piece had an incredible beauty to it. I think it was a combination of the irregularity of the yarn and the perfection of their knitting. And the love they put into it, of course! Those ladies also taught how to spin (and dye) wool, but at the time Marta and Liliana were still babies and to find the time to attend even a one hour workshop was pretty impossible.  So when we moved here we happened to land very near the Burr House, a historic house that is also home to a Spinners and Weavers Guild. Only it took me another two years to finally get my hands on a wheel. But it happened and it was such an enjoyable day. After an introduction to the different natural fibers and a bit of history we rolled up our sleeves and tried the drop spindle first. Then we  spent the rest of the afternoon at the wheel. Every beginning is a bit akward and until you get the hanfg of it, spinning  feels a bit like tapping your head and rubbing your belly at the same time. I can’t claim I can spin yet but I can see that with a little bit of practice it is not all that hard. I want to keep practising but need to borrow a wheel first. Meanwhile I’ll keep working with the drop spindle, it goes a bit slower but is very satisfying too.

E cá estou eu ainda atualizando eventos passados! Há dois fins de semana atrás eu finalmente participei de um workshop de fiar lã. Eu esperei tanto por esse momento! Faz pelo menos quatro anos desde que me interessei em produzir fios de lã. A minha inspiração foi um grupo de senhoras que que vendia suas criações no mercado de Stroud. Elas não vendiam os fios, mas peças de tricô feitas com os fios produzidos a mão. Cada peça tem uma beleza toda especial. Acho que é a combinação da irregularidade do fio artesanal com a perfeição do tricô, e muito amor, é claro! A senhoras também ensinavam a fiar e a tingir a lã, mas naquele tempo a Marta e a Lili ainda eram bebês e achar tempo para participar de um workshop era um desafio. Quando mudamos para o Canadá a gente aterrissou pertinho da Burr House, uma casa histórica que também abriga uma associação de tecelões e fiadores. Mas ainda assim eu levei outros dois anos para finalmente colocar as minhas mãos numa roca. Mas aconteceu, e foi um dia muito legal. Depois de uma breve introdução as fibras naturais e um pouco de história arregaçamos as mangas e praticamos primeiro com um fuso. Depois passamos a tarde a praticar na roca. Todo começo é difícil, e até pegar o jeito certo, fiar na roca é igual a bater na cabeça com uma das mãos e fazer círculos na barriga com a outra. Eu naõ posso dizer que sei fiar ainda, mas posso sentir que com apenas um pouco de prática, não é assim tão difícil. Eu quero continuar praticando, mas agora tenho que arrumar uma roca emprestada. Enquanto isso eu vou desenvolvendo a minha habilidade com o fuso.

Marta and Liliana were playing with one of my old knitting magazines when Marta spotted a knitted cupcake. She ran up to me and asked if I could make one for her, like, “right now, mama”.  The magazine didn’t bring the pattern so I did a quick search on Ravelry and found this lovely free pattern.  I then looked up my bag of leftover yarn and found a few suitable colours and got started. It was all very fine apart from the fact that it turned out huge! I used yarn that is slightly thicker than dk and only afterward I realised the pattern offers a smaller size which would probably have given me a more accurate cupcake size. Doh! I also think that cotton would have worked better as wool is more elastic and doesn’t hold the shape that well. But anyhow, I finished the next day and left it for Marta on a little plate on her play table. It was so delightful to watch. Even though she asked for it and saw me working on it she was still surprised and radiant that I had made the cupcake for her. So precious.

Marta e Liliana estavam brincando com uma das minhas revistas de tricô velhas quando a marta viu um bolinho de tricô. Ela correu pra mim e perguntou se eu podia fazer um para ela, assim, “pra agora mama”! A revista não tinha a receita então eu fiz uma busca rápida no Ravelry e achei essa gracinha de receita de graça. Eu dei uma olhada no meu saco de sobras de lã e achei algumas cores que podiam dar certo e comecei o projeto. Ficou tudo ótimo menos o fato de que o bolinho ficou enorme! Eu usei um fio que era mais grosso do que dk e só depois de pronto é que vi que a receita traz um tamnho menor que provavelmente me daria um tamnho mais de acordo com o bolinho. Eu acho também que fio de algodão funcionaria melhor uma vez que lã é mais elástica e não segura a forma tão bem. De qualquer forma, eu acabei o projeto no dia seguinte e deixei para a Marta num pratinho em cima da mesa de brincar. Tão lindo de ver. Apesar de ela ter me pedido para fazer o bolinho e de ter me visto fazê-lo ainda assim ela ficou surpresa e radiante de eu ter feito o bolinho para ela. Precioso!

Terminando a colcha do quarto das meninas. Só falta coser o acabamento a mão na parte de trás da colcha.

Mais bichinhos de tricô. A mamãe porco e dois porquinhos, mais um pato por enquanto…

Terminando dois gnomos que não consegui terminar durante a sessão de artesanato dessa semana na escola Waldorf.

I haven’t been knitting much lately, or not at all to be honest. So the other night I got this craving for knitting that needed to be satiated, like right then. As an excuse there was Marta’s friend’s birthday coming up and though I had already gotten a gift for her it would also be nice to give a little something handmade too. I thought a knitted animal would be quick and fun to make and I had some left over pink yarn from Marta’s vest, just perfect for a little pig. Well, it was pretty much the circumstances that shaped this gift and I wasn’t sure Marta’s friend even found pigs cute or had any relationship to the animal whatsoever but nonetheless it has been made with love. So when she opened the gift and saw the pig she smiled and exclaimed: “It’s Wilbur!” As it happens her mum has been reading Charlotte’s Web to her and she’s very fond of the pig Wilbur! So here is very a happy ending to my knitted toy that had me smiling big.

I used the pattern on the book Knitted Animals by Anne-Dorthe Grigaff and already got requests for another pig, a duck, a rabbit and dog from another little girl who also loved the pig!

Eu nao tenho feito muito trico ultimanente, na verdade nao tenho tricotado absolutamente nada. Um dia, de noite me deu uma vontade louca de fazer trico que eu tive que achar um projeto imediatamente. Como desculpa tinha o aniversario da amiguinha da Marta e que apesar de eu ja ter comprado um presente para ela, tambem e legal dar uma coisinha feita a mao. Eu achei que um bichinho de trico seria perfeito pois e rapido e divertido de fazer e eu tinha fio sobrando do colete rosa que eu fiz para a Marta no outono que era perfeito para um porquinho.  No entanto foram as circunstancias que deram forma a esse presente, e eu nem sabia se a menina gostava ou nao de porquinhos ou tinha qualquer relacao com esse bichinho. Mas quando ela abriu o presente e viu o porquinho ela exclamou:”E o Wilbur!” pois sua mae estava lendo para ela a historia “A teia de Charlotte” e ela adora o porquinho Wilbur. Um final muito feliz para o bichinho de trico. Fiquei feliz!

Eu usei a receita do livro Knitted Animals de Anne-Dorthe Grigaff e ja recebi pedidos para fazer um outro porquinho, um patinho, um coelho e um cahorro de uma outra meninha que tambem adorou o porquinho.

Here it is! I finished Marta’s pink vest. Lovely pattern, very quick knit. I find vests an indispensable item in children’s wardrobes. They are very versatile, good to use  outdoors, under a jacket during the Autumn and early Spring and indoors during Winter. Marta gets hot very easily so I find vests great for when we are inside where a sweater would be too much for her. I really tried to get a good picture of her (over days!) but there was no way she would colaborate, sorry about the blur.

The pattern is Girl’s cap sleeved spring shirt by Shellee Floyd and I used Patons classic wool merino on 4 and 5 mm needles (US 6 and 8).

Aqui está! Eu terminei a vest cor de rosa para a Marta. Ótima receita, super rápida de tricotar. Eu acho coletes um ítem indispensável no armário das crianças.  Elas são bem versáteis, boas de usar do lado de fora por debaixo do casaco durante o outono ou começo da primavera e dentro de casa durante o inverno.  Marta é uma criança calorenta, então para ela o colete é perfeito para a casa ou escola uma vez que um casaco seria muito quente. Eu tentei tirar uma boa foto dela vestida com o colete, mas não houve jeito dela colaborar. Desculpe a falta de foco!

We spent most of our Saturday working at home. We harvested the last carrots and beets from the garden and prepared the beds for their long Winter sleep. Our garden did really well this year and we are very proud of our produce, even the tiny carrots! But more valuable than what we produced was actually having the children exposed to Nature’s cycles as well as a direct experience of where some of our food comes from. Plus, of course, their enthusiasm in helping, observing and noticing the changes in the plants. We are looking forward to next Spring and already thinking what we will plant.

On Saturday we also raked and played on a pile of dried leaves. Oh, the giggles! And there was some knitting thrown in there too. I have started a pink vest for Marta because now she likes all things pink, of course. It is almost finished now and I’ll will be sharing it with you soon.

Nós passamos a maior parte do sábado trabalhando em casa. Nós colhemos as últimas cenouras e beterrabas e preparamos a terra para o longo sono do inverno.  A nossa horta foi muito produtiva esse ano e estamos muito orgulhosos do que produzimos, até das cenouras miniaturas! Mais importante do que as colheitas em si, foi expor as crianças aos ritmos da natureza bem como a experiência direta de onde vem alguns dos alimentos que consumimos. E claro, o entusiamo com que elas ajudam, observam e notam as mudanças nas plantas. Já estamos animados com a primavera e pensando no que vamos plantar.

No sábado nós também varremos o jardim e brincamos no monte de folhas secas. E teve também um tricô, pois comecei um colete cor de rosa para a Marta porque agora ela gosta de tudo rosa, claro. Já está quase pronto e logo logo mostro como ficou.

I found this big(ish) stone when we were camping this Summer and thought it would be nice to make a crochet cover that is not for tiny rocks, like the ones I’ve done previously. So in one of those in-between projects moment I grabbed my crochet hook and some cotton yarn and out popped a new crochet covered rock. I’ve been using it as a door stopper and love the way it looks on the floor. I’d love to produce another two but have to find more big rocks first. I don’t seem to find them so easily around these parts, saddly.

Eu achei essa pedra grande quando estávamos acampando no verão e achei que seria legal fazer uma capa de crochê que não fosse tão pequenininha como as que eu fiz préviamente. Num desses momentos vazios, entre projetos, eu peguei o meu gancho e fio de algodão e produzi uma nova pedra coberta com uma capa de crochê. Eu a tenho usado como prendedor de porta e acho que fica lindo no chão. Eu adoraria fazer mais três, mas tenho que achar mais pedras grandes primeiro. Infelizmente eu não consigo achar nenhuma por essas bandas.
