hands follow heart

We have just completed one week at the Rudolf Steiner Institute. Warren spent the last five days teaching bread baking to a group of nine eager students. He led them on a journey that started with an exploration of the breads that nourished early humanity like chapattis to the decadent croissants and pain au chocolat passing through pitta bread, southern and northern European sourdough in the shape of french peasant loaf, yeasted bagels and spelt cinnamon buns. All they baked was served at the coffee break and instantly devoured proving how delicious and deeply nourishing lovingly baked bread can be. One student and fellow blogger did a fantastic job in documenting this journey in very fine detail. I highly recommend you to check Joy’s blog to see some great pictures and get a feel for the process.

This week I looked after Marta and Liliana while Warren taught. Marta attended the children’s programme and joined the the Fairy Folk group in the mornings. After lunch she chose to stay with Liliana and I but later in the afternoon we would all join the Fairy Folk again for some water play outdoors. I also managed to make good progress on the knitting project I chose to bring, the pomatomus socks, finally! Next week I’ll take part on Doing Sculpture as Transformative Activity and Warren will look after them. I’m so looking forward to it. Thank you Warren!

But before Monday comes we are making the most of our weekend. Today we spent the morning on a lake beach nearby and tomorrow we are headed to Cape Cod area to enjoy a little bit of New Englandishness!

Já faz uma semana que estamos no Rudolf Steiner Institute. Warren passou os ultimos cinco dias ensinando nove animadíssimos estudantes a arte de fazer pão. Ele os conduziu numa jornada que começou com uma exploração dos pães que nutriram a humanidade na sua infância até a complexidade dos croissants e pain au chocolat passando por pão árabe (ou pitta), pães feitos com levedo natural na Europa medieval, bagels com fermento comercial e pão de canela. Tudo o que eles prduziram foi servido no cafezinho da tarde e instantâneamente devorado provando o quão delicioso e nutritivo é o pão feito com amor e entusiasmo. Uma das estudantes e tambem blogueira fez uma excelente documentação do curso nos mínimos detalhes. Eu recomendo uma visita ao seu blog para ver lindas fotos e ter uma idéia do processo.

Essa semana eu fiquei por conta das crianças enquanto o Warren dava aula.  A Marta participou do programa infantil e foi as aulinhas do Fairy Folk pela manhã. Depois do almoço ela escolheu ficar comigo e com a Lili, mas ao final da tarde nós três nos juntamos ao grupo de novo para brincar com água ao ar livre.  Eu tambem fiz ótimo progresso no projeto de tricô que eu escolhi trazer, as meias pamatomus, finalmente! Semana que vem eu vou participar do Doing Sculpture as Transformative Activity enquanto o Warren fica com as meninas. Mal posso esperar. Obrigada Warren!

Mas enquanto a segunda feira não chega nós vamos aproveitando o fim de semana. Hoje fomos a um lago aqui pertinho e amanhã vamos a região de Cape Cod.

One of my knitting goals for this year was to make a blanket. I got the yarn as a birthday present from my mother in law, but I must have misread the pattern as I only have enough wool for half of the blanket. Do women ever outgrow “pregnancy brain” or is it just me? Anyhow, I was so set on the mitered pattern for the blanket that although I was ready to let go of the throw I wasn’t ready to let go of the mitered squares. I then went on to research what else I could make with the amount of wool I have and that is mitered. Hooray for Ravelry pattern search! I found Coco Vee Cape, this beautiful wrap just perfect for my mitered squares. It’s so addictive to knit the squares that the project is moving quite fast. I’m hoping to have it finished before we go away in about three weeks time. Watch this space.

Uma das minhas metas desse ano no tricô era fazer uma manta. Eu ganhei os fios de presente da minha sogra, mas eu devo ter lido a receita errado e só tenho o suficiente para metade. Será que algum dia o meu cérebro vai voltar ao normal ou “cérebro de grávida” dura para sempre? Enfim, eu gostei tanto do quadrado modular da manta que eu quis achar outro projeto que pudesse usá-los. Viva o mecanismo de procura do Ravelry! Eu achei Coco Vee Cape, um xale modernoso lindo que é perfeito para os meus quadrados. A receita modular é um vício e projeto está se desenvolvendo rapidamente. Eu espero acabá-lo antes de viajarmos, em três semanas. Fique de olho!

I really took my time with this one. I think it has been some three or four weeks since I started this covered rock. The thing is I can’t quite work on only one thing at a time so I usually have three of four projects going simultaneously. Warren’s birthday gift was my main focus for a while so the rock cover came in as my “rest” project, if you know what I mean. A project this small was also perfect  for the occasions in which I only had a bit of spare time but not enough to have the whole sewing circus out. Now that it is finished it is beautifully adorning our living room. I’m now thinking of starting a pair of (knitted) socks as my next small/portable project.  Or maybe mittens? Or why not both!

Nossa, essa demorou. Acho que foram bem umas três ou quatro semanas desde que eu comecei a capa para a pedra. O negócio é que eu não sei trabalhar em um só projeto de cada vez, então geralmente tenho três ou quatro projetos simultâneamente. O presente de aniversário do Warren foi a minha prioridade nas últimas semanas então o crochet virou o meu “projeto” de descanso, se é que você me entende. Um projeto pequeno assim também foi perfeito para as horas em que eu tinha um pouco de tempo de sobra mas não o sufuciente para armar todo o circo da costura.  Agora que acabei a pedra, ela está enfeitando a nossa sala de estar. E estou pensando em começar um par de meias como o meu próximo trabalho pequeno/portátil. Ou talvez luvas? Ou por que não os dois?

… to wash, dry and store Winter away. The weather has been glorious all this week so far, sunny, no clouds and temperatures up to 32 Celsius (90F). Even a bit too hot for the little ones to play outside in the middle of the day. I thought this was the perfect opportunity to freshen up our woolens and have them soaken up a lot of sunshine. Now, there’s a lot of contradictions in advice in how to store wool but I’ll put ours in an airtight container with a handkerchief dabbed with lavender essential oil and hope they will be deliciously fresh smelling for next Winter.

Hoje é o dia perfeito para lavar, secar e guardar as roupas de inverno. O tempo tem estado maravilhoso a semana toda, ensolarado, sem nuvens e com temperatura na casa dos 30 graus Celsuis. Tem estado até um pouco quente demais para as pequerruchas brincarem do lado de fora no meio do dia. Mas a ocasião é perfeita para lavar as roupas de lã, arejá-las e deixá-las absorver muito sol. Agora, existem muitas contradições em como guardar artigos de lã mas eu vou colocar as nossas em caixas de plástico com um lencinho respingados com algumas gotas de óleo essencial de lavanda para manter as traças longe. Espero encontrar nossas roupas de lã deliciosamente cheirosas no próximo inverno.

I finished the gift I was making for my sister in law and I’m really thrilled by how they turned out. The pattern was written to fit  stones that are around 10 cm wide but it is adaptable to accommodate other sizes. When I decided to make those covered rocks for Wendy I didn’t have time to hunt for the perfect rock so I had to go with the ones I had at home and they were all about half the size or smaller than the pattern. It was a bit tricky to adapt the pattern for a smaller size but it worked out fine in the end. I used crochet thread size 20 with a 1 mm hook (n.10). You can find patterns for three different covers in the September/October 2009 issue of Crochet Today magazine

Eu terminei o presente que estava fazendo para a minha cunhada e fiquei muito feliz com o resultado. A receita foi escrita para caber em pedras que tenham mais ou menos 10 cm de diâmetro mas é facilmente adaptável para outros tamanhos. Quando eu decidi fazer esse presente para a Wendy eu não tive tempo de sair para procurar a pedra perfeita e tive que usar as que eu já tinha em casa e elas são metade do tamanho da receita. Tive que dar uma improvisada no acabamento, mas deu super certo.  Eu usei fio para crochê número 20 e gancho de 1 mm. Você pode achar receitas para três capas diferentes na revista Crochet Today de setembro/outubro de 2009.

While my mum was here we took the opportunity to go to Toronto a couple of times. Right by Lake Ontario we bumped into this funny advertising for an AM radio station.  I’m not sure if this policy ever existed but it made for a clever ad. With two little ones it doesn’t even cross my mind to take any knitting with me on the plane, anyway!

Enquanto minha mãe estava aqui a gente aproveitou para ir badalar na cidade algumas vezes. Bem perto do lago Ontário a gente esbarrou com esse anúncio bem engraçado de uma estação de rádio local. O anúncio diz: “É permitido levar agulhas de tricô no avião [se que acompanhadas do fio] – entenda o que não faz sentido”. Eu não sei se algum dia essa regra foi verdadeira, mas rendeu um anúncio bem esperto, apesar de que traduzido para o português perde um pouco da graça. De qualquer forma, com duas crianças pequenas nem me passa pela cabeça levar tricô para fazer no avião!

I was browsing the newsstand the other day and  bought a Spanish crochet magazine because it had a beautiful pattern for a table runner that would be perfect on the new sideboard we got for our dining room back in Toronto.
I got terribly distracted and ended up making a doily for my mum instead. I just couldn’t help it. It was like my hands started the project before I could even think about it. I just find doilies fascinating. Perhaps it has something to do with my love of mandalas? Certainly.

I’m still tentative with crochet and the result is far from perfect but at least you can look at the pattern and recognise it in my project! While in Brazil I find knitting very hard because it is too hot to work with wool and I don’t enjoy knitting with cotton all that much. So crochet is actually a great craft to experiment with while here. I used the leftover yarn from my sunglasses case for this project.

Eu estava no jornaleiro outro dia e comprei uma revista espanhola de crochê que tinha um modelo de passador lindo e que ficaria perfeito no bufet que compramos para a nossa sala de jantar em Toronto. Eu me destraí e ao invés do passador eu acabei fazendo um paninho ornamental redondo para a minha mãe. Eu simplemente não pude me conter. Eu adoro esses paninhos. Talvez esteja relacionado pela minha fascinação por mandalas? Certamente.

Eu não domino o crochê e o resultado está longe da perfeição, mas pelo menos você pode reconhecer o modelo no meu projeto! Eu acho muito difícil tricotar aqui no Rio pois é muito quente para trabalhar com lã e eu não gosto muito de tricotar com algodão.  Então crochê é na verdade perfeito para se experimentar aqui. Para esse projeto eu usei o fio que sobrou do saquinho que fiz para meus óculos escuros.

I got those shades as a birthday gift to myself when we were in Philadelphia last December. It was meant to be a joke. I saw them in a antique/miscellanea shop while enjoying a couple of hours on my own browsing the lovely neighbourhood of Germantown. I thought it would be funny to go back and meet Warren and the children wearing something unusual and so not me. The shades would then go to the children’s dress up box. That was the plan. What I wasn’t counting on was the fact that they are actually very good sun glasses. In fact, the best pair I’ve ever had. The children delighted on seeing their funny looking mama (Warren was a bit shocked) and wanted to play with them straight away. But instead of letting them become a toy permanently I decided to adopt them as my sun glasses despite them looking a bit daft on me. So as soon as I had a chance to go to a yarn shop here in Rio I got some cotton yarn and started a case for my new shades. I made up the pattern and if I had to do another one I would definitely add more rows between the top of the case and the tie. But I’m pretty happy with it as it is.  The colours I chose are as daft as the glasses themselves and I think they actually go very well together!

Esses óculos escuros foram um presente de aniversário que eu comprei para mim mesma quando estivemos na Filadélfia em dezembro passado. Era para ser uma brincadeira. Eu vi os óculos numa loja de antiguidades/brechó quando estava passeando a sós nas ruas do charmoso bairro de germantown. Eu achei que seria divertido voltar para encontrar com o Warren e asmeninas vestindo algo engraçado e absolutamente nada a ver comigo. Depois os óculos iriam para a caixa de brinquedos das crianças. Esse era o plano. No entanto eu não estava contando com o fato de os óculos são na verdade muito bons. De fato, o melhor par de óculos escuros que eu já tive. As meninas adoraram ver a mamãe chegando toda engraçada (o Warren ficou meio chocado) e quiseram logo ir brincando com os óculos. Mas ao invés de deixá-los virarem um brinquedo permanente eu decidi adotá-los apesar deles serem meio ridículos em mim. Então, assim que tive a chance de ir a um armarinho aqui no Rio eu comprei fios de algodão e comecei a fazer uma “caixa” de óculos. Eu mesma inventei o modelo, e se tivesse que fazer outra eu com certeza aumentaria o número de carreiras entre a borda do saco  e o cordão. As cores que eu escolhi são tão ridículas quanto os óculos mas eu acho que eles combinam perfeitamente!

The pictures below don’t quite look like Toronto this time of the year. That’s right. We’ve been in Rio now for three days and still adapting to the roasting temperatures. World climate seems to be crazy all over, and it’s not any different here. Tomorrow they are predicting a high of 40 degrees Celsius (104 F)! Thank god we are on holiday and don’t need to be in traffic or at work in this heat. We had a very tiring trip with a ten hour flight and a crazy connection in São Paulo but we made it here in good shape.  It’s been lovely to be back home and enjoying  family and friends and some tropical goodness, like fresh from the tree coconut water. Just delicious! We had a crazy week before we left with all the getting ready for the trip stuff but I managed to get started on a few knitted eggs in preparation for our Spring/Easter nature table for when we return to Canada.

Essas fotos não parecem de Toronto nessa época do ano. É isso mesmo, nós estamos no Rio há três dias e tentando nos adaptar ao calor fora do comum. O clima mundial parece estar louco e não podia deixar de ser diferente por aqui. Amanhã a temperatura está prevista para 40 graus Celsius (104F)! Graças a deus estamos de férias e não precisamos enfrentar trânsito ou trabalho nesse calorão. A nossa viagem foi bem cansativa, com um vôo de dez horas masi uma conexão louca em São Paulo. Mas ainda assim chegamos em boa forma. Tem sido muito especial estar de volta em casa com a família e amigos, e é claro delícias tropicais como água de côco. A semana antes da nossa viagem foi bem cheia com tudo o que tinha para arrumar, mas acabei conseguindo tricotar alguns ovinhos de Páscoa para a nossa mesa da natureza da primavera/páscoa para quanto retornarmos ao Canadá.
