I realized I show many more projects that I’m starting or working on then finished ones. Truth be said, some don’t ever get finished, and others take a long time (three years?!) and some others don’t get photographed at all.  And, of course, quite a few get done and photographed but not posted! Let’s fix this right now! Here are two of them: the bathroom mat I was working on recently (mentioned on this post) and a bag I made as a Birthday gift for Marta’s kindergarten teacher (mentioned on this post).

The bathroom mat I finished some three weeks ago. I didn’t follow a pattern but started with 30 chain and then it’s all worked on double crochet (UK) or single crochet (US). I then added a border simple border also dc/sc.

The bag… well, I finished it last October. It’s never too late to show off beautiful things is it? I used a pattern called Serendipity Bag from Fabric Palette and used scraps of fabric I had from different projects. I’m now working on a new one of those bags.

Eu me dei conta de que eu mostro muito mais projetos que estou começando ou em andamento do que projetos acabados. Verdade seja dita, muitos nuncam chegam a ser acabados e outros levam muito tempo (três anos!) e outros não são fotografados. E claro, tem aqueles que que são terminados e fotografados mas não são postados.  Vamos consertar isso agora! Aqui estão dois trabalhos terminados: o tapete do banheiro (mencionado aqui) e uma bolsa que fiz de presente de aniversário para a professora da marta (mencionado aqui).

O tapete eu acabei há umas três semanas atrás. Não usei receita, comecei com 30 correntes e segui com crochê simples até o final. A borda também é feita com crochê simples.

A bolsa… bem, a bolsa eu terminei outubro passado. Nunca é tarde pra mostrar coisa bonita, né? Eu usei o molde Serendipity Baga da Fabric Palette e retalhos de tecidos usados em outros projetos. E agora estou trabalhando em outra bolsa dessas.

In the past two days the temperature has dropped to below 0C and feels like winter all over again. Yesterday school was cancelled and the children were at home, but today…  it’s the perfect day for handwork. I just lit up the fire in the fireplace and I’m ready to get busy. I’m half way through a bath mat I’m crocheting for our bathroom. I brought the cotton yarn from Brazil and so love the blue! I also want to work on my Schoolhouse tunic that I’m making with some lovely linen I got a while ago.  If I finish it in time I’ll enter it on Rae’s Spring Top Sew Along. I’m also posting a picture of the finished doily that I started in Brazil. This one was more about the process, as I’m not so thrilled by the end result.

Nos útimos dois dias a temperatura caiu para abaixo de 0C e tá parecendo que é inverno de novo. Ontem a escola foi cancelada por causa do mau tempo e as crianças ficaram em casa, mas hoje… é o dia perfeito para trabalhos manuais. Acabei de acender a lareira e estou pronta para botar a mão na massa. Eu estou na metade de um tapete de banheiro que estou fazendo em crochê. O fio eu trouxe do Brasil e estou amando o tom de azul. Hoje eu també quero adiantar a minha túnica Schoolhouse que estou fazndo com um linho ótimo que comprei há um tempinho atrás. Se eu acabar a tempo vou participar do Spring Top Sew Along da Rae. Aprioveito também para postar o doily que eu tereminei. Esse projeto valeu pelo processo, porque o resultado final não ficou lá grandes coisas!

Here is my latest knitted creation: a gnome hat for my dear friend Dawne, just like the ones I made for Marta and Liliana. She commissioned me to do it and  it really looks amazing on her.  I’m even getting inspired to make one for myself! I’m quite amused by the idea of a family outing with the four of us wearing pointy hats (Warren has a similar one). Watch this space!

Aqui está a minha criação de tricô mais recente: um gorro estilo gnomo tamanho adulto para a minha querida amiga Dawne. Igualzinho aos que eu fiz para a Marta e Liliana. Ela me encomendou o gorro e voi-lá, ficou ótimo nela. Fiquei até tentada em fazer um para mim. A idéia de um passeio em família com nós quatro de gorrinho me diverte a veras! Fique de olho!

Marta turns 6 in a couple of days. At school they will celebrate her birthday on Monday and both parents are invited to attend. It’s usually a very heart warming celebration, simple but really especial. The teacher prepares and perform a puppet show made especially for the birthday child, and after that we eat cake that was prepared in the classroom with the help of the children. As a gratitude gesture for such care and attention toward our dear children I made this doll sweater and hat as a gift to Marta’s classroom. They were made for a doll slightly bigger than the one we have at home, pictured in this post. So the hat won’t look as big! It is such a rewarding project making clothes for dolls. The perfect thing for when you need immediate gratification!

For the sweater I used the same pattern as for the baby’s vest posted here. I then added the sleeves. For the hat I used a pattern called Doll’s Pinafore, Cap and Shawl by Naomi Herrzfeld from a book called Sock Yarn One-Skein Wonders edited by Judith Durant.

Em dois dias a Marta completa 6 anos. A escola vai celebrar o aniversário dela na segunda feira e os pais estão convidados a participar da festinha. É geralmente simples mas muito especial. A professora prepara e encena um teatrinho de bonecos especialmente para a aniversariante e depois tem bolinho com chá, que foi preparado com a ajuda das crianças. Como demostração de gratidão por tanto carinho e atenção com as nossas crianças eu fiz esse casaquinho e chapéu de boneca de presente para a sala da Marta. Eles foram feitos para uma boneca um pouco maior do que a que temos em casa, que aparece na foto, e o chapéu não vai ficar tão grande. Fazer roupa de bonecas é perfeito quando se quer resultados rápido.

Para o casaco eu usei como base a receita da vest do bebe postada aqui. Depois adicionei as mangas. Para o chapéu eu usei a receita chamada Doll’s Pinafore, Cap and Shawl por  Naomi Herrzfeld do livro book called Sock Yarn One-Skein Wonders edited by Judith Durant.

Snow and knitting go so well together, don’t they? Add a mug of coffee and a freshly baked lemon muffin to the scene and you have a perfect Friday afternoon!

Tricô e neve é uma combinação perfeita. Junta um cafézinho, um bolinho  de limão fresquinho e tem-se a tarde perfeita!

I so love knitting. For the past year and a half I’ve been dividing my spare time between a few more other crafts and haven’t been knitting as much. But I’m slowly getting back to it! This past weekend I finished a gift I made for the assistant teacher in Liliana’s class who’s going off on maternity leave on Wednesday. I love the County Kiddie pattern by Pixie Purls because it is so simple and produces the most practical vest for everyday use. I made one for Liliana when she was a baby and she practically lived in it. Because it’s made with sock yarn, it’s not bulky and just perfect for that extra layer of warmth when indoors.

Once I had my hands on the needles I also got started in making a sweater for one of the dolls in Marta’s classroom. I’m using the same pattern as I did for the gift I just mentioned, but I’ll add sleeves to it.  I may get carried on on and and get started on a hat to go with it!

Also, Friday muffins are back! Last week we had cherry muffins with chocolate icing, which became a favourite in our house. Yummy delicious. I’m now on the look out for new recipes to try out.

Eu amo tricotar. Há um ano e pouco eu venho dividindo o meu tempo livre entre vários outros tipos de trabalhos manuais, mas tenho feito muito pouco tricô. Mas devagarinho eu tô voltando! No fim de semana eu terminei um presente que fiz para a professora assistente de a Lili que sai de licença maternidade essa semana. Eu amo a receita Country Kiddie da Pixie Purls porque ela é super simples e o resultado é o colete mais prático para o dia a dia. Eu fiz uma dessas para a Lili quando ela rea bebê  e ela praticmente vivia com ela. Ela é feita com fio de meia, e não tem muito volume, perfeita para manter o bebê quentinho dentro de casa.

Uma vez que estava com as agulhas na mão, eu comecei um casaco para uma das bonecas da escola da Marta. Eu estou usando a mesma receita do presente que descrevi acima, mas vou adicionar as mangas ao casaco. Se eu me empolgar de vez vou fazer um gorro para ir com o casaco!

Os bolinhos de sexta-feira estão de volta. Semana passada foi de cerejas com cobertura de chocolate, que é um favorito na nossa casa. Uma delícia. Agora estou de olho em novas receitas para experimentar.

Christmas and New Year have come and gone. I haven’t posted anything for ages and that even includes the usual Season Greetings.  But in my heart I really wished you all a very Happy Christmas and much peace in 2013. For a month and a half preceding Christmas we were busy over here knitting, drawing, card making, baking, sewing, felting, cutting, stringing, folding, wrapping… but one thing I didn’t do much of, and that was  photographing.  So most of what we produced  went unregistered, sadly.  But the most important thing of all is that we had a beautiful Christmas celebrated together with dear friends. Then we went to Philly on Boxing day to be with family and have just returned home last weekend. We had a fun time away, but it is just nice to be back home. The children re-started school today and I look forward to finding our way back into our daily rhythms.

Natal e Ano Novo vieram e já se foram. Já faz um tempão que não atualizo o blog e nem coloquei a mensagem de Boas festas como de costume. Mas do fundo do meu coração eu desejei a vocês um Feliz Natal e muita paz em 2013. Pelo mês e meio que antecedeu o Natal nós estávamos a mil por hora tricotando, costurando, desenhando, fazendo cartões, assando biscoitos, feltando, cortando, dobrando, embrulhando… mas uma coisa a gente não fez o suficiente: tirar fotografar. Por isso, a maior parte da nossa produção não foi registrada. Que triste. Mas o mais importante é celebramos o Natal com muita alegria com amigos no dia 24 e passamos o 25 em casa, com muita paz. No dia 26 fomos para a Filadélfia visitar a famíla e voltamos no fim de semana passado. A viagem e a estadia foram ótimas, mas é muito bom voltar para a casa. Hoje as crianças recomeçaram as aulas e eu não vejo a hora de voltar aon nossos ritmos diarios.

So it was that my mum came and visited us at the end of October. She only left a few weeks ago but if feels it’s been more than three months. Before the details of her visit fade into the busyness of Christmas coming I thought I’d share the amazing gift she made for the girls. My mum made not one but two, twin size patchwork bedspreads. We actually chose the pattern together a year ago when she last visited us, so it was really amazing to see them ready and so beautiful. I have two very happy girls with their bedspreads! In return for the very especial gift Marta, Liliana and I made a gift for her birthday, which she celebrated here with us. We followed this tutorial from Flax & Twine and made a finger knitted pillow cover in the colours chosen by my mum.  The tutorial is very well explained and beautifully done, but I thought that the project itself is a bit labor intensive. I say that because as a knitter it would have been easier just to knit a pillow case. But it was totally worth it for the fun of working together since even my mum joined in with the finger knitting. We had an amazing two weeks together and all I can say is that my mum is very good sport. She endured hours of “beauty parlor”, had her clothes styled by a 5 and 4 year old girls,  suffered a trip to Niagara Falls with us just so we could cross the border and get our visas (on her birthday!!!), carved pumpkins and even went trick or treating with the girls. Check the trio Peter Pan, Tinker Bell and Princess Kitty! We love vovó!

Como falei no post anterior, no final de outubro recebemos a visita da minha mãe. Ela voltou ao Brasil só fazem algumas semanas, mas parece que já se passaram mais de três meses. Antes que os detalhes da visita da vovó sejam obscurecidos pelo tumulto das festas natalinas que se aproximam eu achei esse momento perfeito para mostrar o presente maravilhoso que ela fez para as netas. Minha mãe fez não só uma, mas duas colchas de cama de solteiro todas de patchwork. Não foi surpresa porque escolhemos o modelo juntas na visita dela no ano passado, o que fez ainda mais incrível vê-los prontos e perfeitos. Como retribuição a um presente tão especial, Marta, Liliana e eu fizemos uma capa de almofada para ela de presente de aniversário. Seguimos esse pap do Flax & Twine com as cores escolhidas pela minha mãe. O pap é super bem explicado, mas achei o projeto em si muito trabalhoso. Falo isso porque como eu faço tricô acho que seria mais fácil fazer uma capa de almofada de tricô. Mas valeu muito àpena só pelo fato de ter sido um projeto colaborativo, onde até a vovó fez tricô de dedo. Nós todos tivemos duas semanas maravilhosas juntos e só posso dizer que a minha mãe tem um espírito esportivo muito admirável. Ela resistiu á horas de “salão de beleza”, teve suas roupas estilizadas por duas meninas de 4 e 5 anos, foi até Niagara Falls para cruzar a fronteira para atualizarmos o nosso visto (no dia do seu aniversário!!), fez lanterna de abóbora e até foi pedir doce de casa em casa com as meninas no Halloween. Saca só o trio Peter Pan, Sininho e princesa Gatinha! A gente te ama vovó!

I have all these wonderful posts in my head about each thing I’m working on (and the things I made) but it’s proving hard to find time to do everything I need to in my days. At the moment I’m prioritizing making over writing, but here’s a peek into what’s going on lately.

It’s paper folding season again and this year I decided to participate in the community table at the school Christmas fair.  Only three weeks to go!

I’ve also been working on a bag as a Birthday gift for a friend. It’s all made with fabric scraps from previous projects and inspired by my friend’s favourite colours

I’m knitting a pair of socks for myself. I’m using a basic sock pattern and adding an interesting stitch from a stitch dictionary book Warren gave me for Christmas last year.

I’m also working on a quilt for another friend. The quilt top is ready, waiting for the back to be completed. I was inspired by crazy nine patch by Elizabeth Hartman.

Hopefully it won’t take me forever to post about each finished item. Hang in there!

Eu tenho todos esses posts maravilhosos na minha cabeça, sobre as coisas que estou fazendo (e as que já fiz) mas tá didfícil de arrumar tempo para fazer tudo o que eu gostaria no dia. No momento estou dando mais prioridade a fazer do que a escrever, mas aqui vai uma espiadinha no que tem me ocupado ultimamente.

Estou dobrando papel de novo. Esse ano resolvi participar na mesa comunitária na feira de Nata da escola. Só faltam três semanas!

Estou fazendo uma bolsa de presente de aniversário para uma amiga. Ela é todoa feita de retalhos e inspirada nas cores favoritas da minha amiga.

Estou tricotando um par de meias para mim usando uma receita básica e adicionando pontos de um dicionário de tricô.

E por último estou terminando um quilt para uma outra amiga. Esse foi inspirado no crazy nine patch da Elizabeth Hartman.

Espero não demorar uma eternidade para compartilhar as fotos dos trabalhos acabados. Fique de olho!

Michaelmas is a Fall festival in which we reach inside ourselves to find strength and courage to go through the days that are growing darker as Winter approaches.  On the spiritual level the imagination of The Archangel Michael taming the dragon is a powerful one that also  inspires us to overcome the forces of darkness that live inside each of us.  Michaelmas is not just one day, but its quality continues until the end of the month. On Friday, at bed time, we told Marta and Liliana the story of St. Michael and the dragon for the first time and on Saturday we celebrated Michaelmas by baking bread. Warren, the girls and a friend baked swords, shields and even St. Michael.

Also on Saturday was one of Marta’s friends birthday party. We carried on with the Michaelmas theme,  and gave him a copy Dragon Baked Bread and a dragon finger puppet to go with it.  I made the finger puppet using scraps of wool and a pattern I found don the internet called Fairy Tales at Your Fingertips by Melissa Mall.

O festival de São Miguel Arcanjo é um festival da estação do outono (no hemisfério norte) no qual nós olhamos para dentro de nós mesmos para encontrar força e coragem para enfrentar os dias que ficam cada vez mais longos com a aproximação do inverno. No plano espiritual a imaginação do Arcanjo Miguel domando o dragão também nos inspira a vencer as forças da escuridão que moram em cada um de nós.  Apesar do dia de São Migule Arcanjo ser 29 de setembro, a qualidade do festival se estende até o final de outubro. Na sexta feira, na hora de dormir, nós contamos a história de São Miguel e o dragão para a Marta e Liliana pela primeira vez, e no sábado nós celebramos fazendo pão. Warren, as meninas e um amigo fizeram espadas, escudos e até S. Miguel!

Também no sábado foi a festa de aniversário de um dos amigos da Marta. Aproveitando o tema do festival de são Migel nós demos de presente  o livro Dragon Baked Bread e uma marionete de dedo de dragão para acompanhar a história. Eu fiz o bonequinho usando restos de lã e uma receita que achei na Internet chamada Fairy Tales at Your Fingertips por Melissa Mall.
