I did it. I finished the quilt for my sister’s baby in time for her to take it back home with her. It is a very simple quilt but it turned out it wasn’t so straight forward to make it as I’d imagined. The oval satin stitch proved to be a bit of a challenge to me as the tension on the machine kept changing from stitch to stitch and I couldn’t make them as uniformly as I wished.  My inexperience also got in the way when the bottom fabric gathered unintentionally and forced me to redo a few stitches to get it right. As a result of my little frustrations I cut by half the number of the oval stiches required by the pattern and I think it still works pretty well. Despite the bumpy ride I’m very pleased with the result. I even think the imperfections give it a lot of personality. My sister can rest assured lots of love were poured into this quilt!

Eu terminei o quilt do neném da minha irmã a tempo dela levá-lo de volta para casa. É um quilt muito simples mas não foi tão fácil assim fazê-lo. O ponto oval acetinado provou ser um desafio para mim. A tensão da máquina mudava a cada ponto e eu não consegui fazê-los uniforme o suficiente. Minha inexperiência também me pegou quando o pano de baixo ficou engruvinhado e me forçou a refazer alguns pontos. Por causa dessas pequenas frustrações eu cortei pela metade o numero de pontos ovais pedidos na receita e até que funcionou muito bem. Apesar dos altos e baixos eu gostei muito do resultado e acho que as inperfeições deram ao quilt uma certa personalidade. Minha irmã pode ficar segura de que a manta foi feita com muito amor!

… of watching my children play

Eu nunca me canso de ver as crianças brincando.

Since we’ve taken down the Christmas decorations in early January I’ve been slowly building up our Winter nature table. The beautiful Snow Queen and her baby, given to us by Anna, have now a companion. Though of a different style he is still a King Winter. He is actually a match for the Snow Queen I made for the Seasons Round Exchange. I started them at the same time but only now I was able to finish King Winter. The snow flakes and snow fairy hanging from the branch were produced at the parent and tot sessions I take Marta and Liliana to at the Toronto Waldorf School. We have now exactly one month to enjoy our nature table until we land in the middle of the (very hot) Brazilian Summer!

Desde que guardamos as decorações de Natal no início de janeiro, eu tenho aos poucos montado a nosa mesa da natureza de inverno. A bela Rainha da Neve, que nos foi dada pela Anna, agora ganhou um companheiro. De estilo diferente, mas ainda assim um Rei Inverno. Ele é na verdade o par da Rainha da Neve que eu fiz para o Seasons Round Exchange. Eu comecei a fazer os dois ao mesmo tempo, mas só agora consegui terminá-lo. Os flocos de neve e a Fada da Neve que estão pendurados no galho foram produzidos durante o grupo de recreação ao qual eu levo a Marta e a Liliana na Toronto Waldorf School. Agora nós temos exatamente um mês para curtir a nossa mesa da natureza, até nós aterrizarmos no meio do verão brasileiro!

Today is the last Sunday of the Advent. The fourth candle has been lit. The 20th star has been hung on our tree. Excitement is building up and Marta can’t stop talking about Santa Claus and that he rides a sleigh and will come to our house to leave her a gift. We told her that we have to bake cookies to leave for him on Christmas Eve, but that might have been too early… now she’s asking to bake cookies everyday.

On Saturday we spent a good chunk of the morning  in one of our preferred outdoors hang out. This is how it looked like:

On Saturday I also finished and wrapped at least one of the girls presents. I made a bucket made of fabric to hold the wood blocks we made for them from our felled Maple tree. Warren sanded, oiled and bee waxed the blocks and they look stunning. I got the inspiration for the bucket here and you can get the pattern from here.

We woke up today to this wonderful display of art in our kitchen. Could have been Damien Hirst, couldn’t it?

And to close a good weekend some decadent chocolate cake!

Hoje é o último domingo do Advento. A quarta vela foi acesa e a vigésima estrela foi pendurada. A antecipação está aumentando e a Marta não pára de falar no Papai Noel e que ele vem num trenó deixar um presente para ela na véspera do Natal. A gente falou para ela que temos que fazer biscoitos para deixar para o Papai Noel para quando ele vier deixar o presente, mas acho que falamos um pouco cedo demais. Agora a Marta quer fazer os biscoitos todos os dias.

No sábado nós passamos um bom pedaço da manhã num dos nossos lugares prediletos para passear e estava lindo com tanta neve.

No sábado também eu consegui terminar e embrulhar pelo menos um dos presentes das meninas. Eu fiz um balde de tecido para segurar os blocos de madeira que fizemos para elas da madeira da árvore que foi derrubada. O Warren lixou, passou óleo e cêra de abelha nos blocos e eles ficaram lindos. A inspiração para o balde eu peguei daqui e o modelo daqui.

Hoje de manhã, ao acordar, demos de cara com um lindo trabalho de arte em nossa cozinha. Poderia ter sido o Damien Hirst, não?

E para fechar um bom fim de semana eu e Marta fizemos um bolo de chocolate maravilhoso!

Isn’t it beautiful? And so simple. I borrowed this idea from our friends Jonathan and Daniela back in England. I haven’t actually seen their ice lanterns myself, only heard of it so I kind of made my own version. It has been cold enough out so that the ice doesn’t melt and it seemed the perfect time to have a go.  I used a medium sized mixing bowl, filled it with water up to 2/3 and placed a jar (with a little water in it so it would stay down) in the middle and left it outside overnight. In the morning I brought it in for a few minutes until the ice melted just enough that I could take the ice form out of the mould. Then I took it outside again and placed a tea light inside and voilá: an ice lantern. This will be our outdoors Christmas decoration, by the way. I just love its simplicity.

Today is also the third Sunday of Advent so we lit the third candle, hung up star number 14, sung our song and read this perfect book that we found at the library. Just perfect fot Marta and Liliana’s age.

Não é linda a lanterna de gelo? E tão simples. Eu peguei a idéia emprestada dos amigos Jonathan e Daniela, lá da Inglaterra. Na verdade eu nunca vi as lanternas de gelo que eles fazem então eu inventei a minha própria versão. Tem estado frio o suficiente do lado de fora para que o gelo não derreta e me pareceu a momento certo para experimentar. Eu usei uma tigela média e enchi com água até 2/3, coloquei um vidro de geléia dentro (com um pouco de água para o vidro ficar no lugar) e coloquei para pernoitar do lado de fora da casa. Pela manhã eu trouxe a tigela para dentro o tempo suficiente para o gelo sair da forma. Então levei de novo para fora e coloquei uma velinha dentro e voilá: uma lanterna de gelo. Essa é a nossa decoração de Natal exterior. Eu amei asimplicidade dessa lanterna!

Hoje é também o terceiro domingo do Advento e nós acendemos a terceira vela, penduramos a estrelinha número 14, cantamos a nossa música e e lemos um livro muito fofo chamado “Little donkey’s Chritmas song” que achamos na biblioteca. Perfeito para a idade da Marta e Liliana.

Also known as season’s gardens, nature tables are a common feature in Waldorf classrooms. You can also spot them in many Waldorf inspired family homes. They are a beautiful and playful way to celebrate the rythms of the seasons of the year by bringing a little bit of nature indoors.

This is my second attempt at having a nature table at home. The first time, back in spring, I  chose a place that was out of reach for the children so they wouldn’t spoil it. The idea was to dedicate a few minutes each day to purposefuly play around it and enjoy it. However, it was so well out of the way that it was basically hidden and we ended up forgetting about it.  This time I completely changed my approach and decided that the nature table is for the children. So now it is in a very visible place between our dining area and living room. It is also on a low table right  at the children’s height so they can play with the things on it.  To have it integrated in our living space seems to be working much better. Our daily interactions with it happen quite naturally and Marta has been engaged with it since I asked if she’d like to helpe me to set it up. She notices every little change that happens there, be it a new leaf or a character that has changed places. Liliana has also shown interest and loves to look at it, surprisingly, she hasn’t pulled the whole thing apart. Yet?

 A mesa da natureza é um elemento comum nas salas de aula das escolas Wladorf e nas casas de famílias que são inspiradas pela filosofia Waldorf.  Elas são como uma celebração do ritmo das estações do ano.

Essa é a minha segunda tentativa de ter uma mesa da natureza aqui em casa. Da primeira vez, na primavera, eu escolhi um lugar que era fora do alcance das crianças, pois não queria que elas estragassem tudo. A idéia era reservar alguns minutos cada dia para brincar perto da mesa e curti-la. No entanto ela estava tão fora do alcance que estava basicamente escondida e acabamos por esquecê-la. Dessa vez eu mudei completamente a minha estratégia e decidi que a mesa da natureza é para as crianças. Agora ela está bem no meio da sala, entre a mesa de jantar e a sala de estar. Eu também escolhi uma mesa bem baixa para que as crianças possam brincar com os elementos da mesa. Agora que a mesa da natureza está completamente integrada no nosso espaço social as nossas interações com ela acontecem naturalmente todos os dias. A Marta nota cada mudança que ocorre na mesa, seja uma nova folha ou um personagem que mudou de lugar. A Liliana também demonstra interesse pela mesa e adora olhar para os bonecos. Surpreendentemente ela não derrubou tudo no chão. Ainda?

Somedays things just work out fine. I was even able to relax for a few minutes while Marta and Liliana were napping. Pure bliss. Btw, Those are the first socks that I’ve ever knitted about two and a half years ago. You can just see how the stitches are super tight as I struggled to master the four needles… but I love them!

Tem dias que tudo corre tão bem. Eu até consegui uns minutinhos para relaxar enquanto a Marta e a Lili tiravam o soninho da tarde. Que alegria! Essa foi a primeira meia que eu tricotei há uns dois anos e meio atrás. Dá até pra ver como os pontos estão super apertados como resultado da minha tentativa de manejar as quatro agulhas. Ainda assim eu adoro essas meias! 

This is actually my first ever quilting project. Oh, I’m so proud! I started it a while ago, in June more precisely, but was only able to finish it just before my mum arrived in early September. What I liked most about this project is that I used only re-purposed fabric. Some were from clothes that are no longer good enough to wear and others were leftovers from either sewing or some other crafts project. I was going to go for a simpler design, just vertical stripes. Last minute I decided to dare a little bit and opted for a log cabin pattern.  I looked up many references and found this online tutorial quite useful.  I’m very pleased with the result and so is our living room. My next attempt will be a simple quilt for Liliana’s bed. My mum brought me some very nice cotton fabric from Brazil and hopefully I’ll be able to use them for this project.

Esse foi o meu primeiríssimo trabalho de quilt. Ai que orgulho! Eu comecei há um tempinho atrás, em junho, mas só consegui terminar no início de setembro. O que eu mais gostei nesse projeto foi fato de só ter usado tecido reaproveitado, ou de roupas que jã não estavam mais boas, ou de outros projetos de costura. Originalmente eu ia fazer um design mais simples, de tiras verticais. Depois resolvi ousar e optei por um padrão “log cabin“. Eu pesquisei várias referências e acabei achando essa aula online bem útil. Eu fiquei super feliz com o resultado e a nossa sala de estar também. Minha próxima tentativa será um quilt para a cama da Lili. A minha mãe trouxe uma série de panos de algodão do Brasil que eu estou planejando usar para esse projeto.

As I write this post I witness the rather majestic Maple tree on our driveway being cut down. Tomorrow it will be the one in the back of the house. They are both huge, mature trees and beautiful beyond measure. It is very sad to see them go. They do pose a threat to our house though and to our neighbour’s too. In fact, a huge branch fell from the one at the back soon after we moved in. Luckily it wasn’t a branch that hung over the house. Our neighbour filed a complaint with the city council after a tornado touched down a very few miles from here in late August. After an inspection from tree experts they demanded our landlord take them down. It took him a month to decide who was going to do the job and just yesterday he finally let us know that they would start taking the trees down today. On the bright side a few friends will get some nice fire wood for next year and Warren will have a good chunky piece of Maple wood for a future sculpture project. We are not tree  huggers, but after supper last night we all went outside and said a little farewell blessing to the trees, sang them a song,  hugged them and thanked them for their beauty and bounty.

Enquanto escrevo esse post, lá fora, a majestosa árvore de Maple na frente da nossa casa está sendo cortada. Amanhã será a que fica  no jardim de traz. Ambas são árvores adultas e enormes e tão lindas que nem dá para descrever. Morro de pena de vê-las partir. No entanto, elas são uma grande ameaça para a nossa casa e para a casa do vizinho também. De fato, um galho bem grande caiu da árvore de traz logo depois que a gente se mudou para essa casa.  Por sorte não era um galho que ficava em cima do telhado. O vizinho fez uma reclamação com a prefeitura após um tornado que passou aqui pertinho no final de agosto e depois de uma inspeção eles mandaram o proprietário da casa onde moramos derrubá-las. Depois de um mês para decidir quem faria o serviço,  ontem ele finalmente entrou em contato e nos avisou que o trabalho começaria hoje. Olhando de uma perspectiva mais positiva alguns de nossos amigos vão ganhar uma generosa quantia de madeira para usar nas lareiras e o Warren vai escolher um bom pedaço da madeira de Maple para uma futura escultura. Não somos “abraçadores de árvores”, mas ontem depois do jantar fomos lá para fora  dar adeus as árvores, cantamos, abraçamos-nas e as agradecemos por sua beleza e generosidade.

Today we greet the Autumn and t is with a lot of anticipation that I look forward to the most beautiful season in Canada. But today is also time to say good bye to the Summer and its relaxed days in light clothing and sandals. Although this was an unusually cool Summer, according to the Torontonians, we enjoyed it very much. It certainly gave us more sunny days in a row than any of the nine Summers we spent in England! Apart from a couple of short trips we spent most of the Summer here at home, and because I just can’t get over how lucky we are to have landed in a house with such a great garden I put together a few pictures that sum up all the treats and fun it offered us. As we might not be in this house anymore by June next year this is also a tribute to this lovely space.

Hoje nós damos as boas-vindas ao outono, e é com grante expectativa que eu aguardo o desenrolar da estação mais bonita do Canadá. Mas hoje também damos adeus ao verão e ao seu ar relaxado, as roupas leves e as sandálias abertas. Segundo os torontanos, esse foi um verãobem fresco e fora do comum, mas mesmo assim nós o aproveitamos bastante. Com certeza  tivemos mais dias de sol seguidos aqui do que em nove verões que passamos na Inglaterra! Tirando as duas curtas viagens que fizemos a gente passou a maior parte do verão aqui em casa. Por isso fiz uma seleção de fotos que resumem as delícias e as surpresas do nosso jardim. É possível também que não estejamos mais nessa casa por volta de junho do ano que vem, então fica aqui também um tributo a esse espaço incrível.
