hands follow heart

I might have missed the Infinite Variety exhibition, but when I was in NYC in August I made it to the American Folk Art Museum anyway and saw a collection of beautiful star-themed quilts. Quite a few dating from the 1800s. I really appreciate the art of modern quilting and what all the new fabric offerings allow for but I’m always in awe of those artists who managed to make amazing things from scraps or repursed fabric, and by hand!!!

Another highlights of my visit to NY were a walk in the High Line park -  a suspended park in New York City,

a visit to MoMA,

a coffee and a loaf of rye, walnut and raisin bread from a fabulous deli in NY, Zabar’s.

I also marvelled at a green wall at the Licoln Cente. Shouldn’t every public space have one of those? What a lovely idea.

And of course, enjoyed my dear cousin and her partner’s company immensily – the first reason of this trip anyway.

Eu posso ter perdido a exposição Infinite Variety, mas quando estive em Nova Iorque em agosto, eu fui ao museu de arte folclórica americana e vi uma fantástica coleção de quilts com tema de estrela. Algumas peças datando de 1800s. Eu curto muito a arte do quilt moderno e tudo que a atual variedade de tecidos disponíves possibilida, mas a minha adimiração fica mesmo com os artistas que conseguem fazer essas maravilhas com retalhos e pedaços de tecidos reutilizados. E a mão ainda por cima!

Outros momentos interessantes da minha viagem foram um passeio no the High Line park, um parque suspenso na cidade, uma visita ao MoMA, e um café e uma pão de centeio com nozes e passas de uma deli fantástica chamada Zabar’s.

E claro, curti a companhia de minha prima e seu marido -  a razão principal dessa viagem!

Yes, I’m showing off my husband’s work today. He suffered this project so much and the result is so amazing that I couldn’t just not share it. Back when we were living in England Warren had a work colleague who was also a luthier. Warren being himself and always looking for a new challenge decided to build a guitar under his friend’s tutelage. It took, on and off, close to three years for Warren to complete the project.  I take my hat off to his perseverance, specially after we came to Canada where his friend was no longer available to help. It not only looks gorgeous but it also sounds good! Well done Warren!

Sim, hoje estou exibindo o trabalho do maridão! Ele sofreu tanto com esse projeto e o violão ficou tão lindo que eu não pude não compartilhar. Quando ainda morávamos na Inglaterra o Warren tinha um colega de trabalho que também era um luthier. Warren sendo como é, sempre procurando novos desafios, decidiu fazer um violão ele mesmo sob a orientação do seu amigo. Com alguns intervalos ele levou quase três anos para completar o projeto. Eu tiro o meu chapéu para a sua perseverança, principalmente depois que nos mudamos para o Canada e seu amigo não estava a mão para ajudar. O violão ficou lindo e ainda por cima soa bem!

With my sparse Summer blogging I still haven’t managed to write about all that I’ve been working on. But before we leave for our long trip I thought I’d share at least my latest project: a baby quilt. This was actually a collaborative project done with the help of other seven women.  This happened as part of a baby shower I offered to one of my dear friends here in Toronto. It was a different kind of baby shower, one focused on the Mama to be, with planned activities to give her support and encouragement for the birth. It wasn’t exactly a Blessingway, but inspired by it. Together we sang, created a quilt and a hanging mobile for the baby, wrote our wishes to our friend on a journal and made bead bracelets for each one of us to be broken after the baby was born. Such a beautiful time we had.

For the quilt activity I asked everyone to bring a square of cotton fabric. During the party each guest placed their square onto the batting and with it said a few words of encouragement to our friend. In the weeks that followed I put the quilt together. Just yesterday I went to visit my friend and her sweet, brand new, little boy. This enchanted quilt has now been delivered and I’m sure it will be well loved!

Com os meus posts tão esparsos nesse verão eu não consegui escrever sobre todos os projetos que tenho feito, mas antes de partimos para a nossa longa viagem decidi compartilhar pelo menos o meu mais recente projeto: uma manta para bebê. Esse foi um projeto participativo, feito com a ajuda de outras sete mulheres. Isso foi parte do chá de bebê que ofereci a minha querida amiga aqui em Toronto. Foi um chá de bebê diferente, um com foco na futura mamãe, com atividades planejadas para dar suporte e coragem no parto. Não foi exatamente um Blessingway, mas inpirado em um. Juntas nós cantamos, criamos a manta e um móbile para o bebê, escrevemos dedicatórias e fizemos pulseiras de contas para serem rompidas após o nascimento do bebê.

Para a manta eu pedi que cada uma trouxesse um quadrado de tecido de algodão. Durante a festa cada convidada posicionou o seu quadrado na coberta e falou algumas palavras de incentivo a nossa amiga. Nas semanas que se seguiram eu finalizei a manta. Ontem fui visitar minha amiga e seu lindo menininho. Essa mantinha encantada foi entregue e tenho certeza que será muito querida.

O verão está bem devagar aqui na terra do blog… mas aqui vai algumas coisas nos ocuparam nesses últimos dias. Estamos indo para casa de laog dos nossos amigos de novo por alguns dias. Nos vemos semana que vem!

First we chose our colours, then cut the tissue paper in small pieces, wrapped the bowls in clingfilm, and started gluing. We let them dry outside where it was warm and sunny and a few hours later… voi-lá: beautiful translucent bowls. This is a very simple and so satisfying project to do with little ones. Liliana went for a mixed colour approach where the fun was basically to paste the pieces of paper and paint them with the glue. Marta planned hers so that each area of the bowl had a different colour. Their bowls now reside on their bedside table holding a few treasures each. Primeiro escolhemos as cores, depois cortamos o papel de seda em pedaços pequenos, revestimos as tigelas em filme e começamos a colar.  Colocamos as tigelas para secar lá fora onde o sol estava brilhando forte e algumas horas depois… voi-lá: dois lindos potinhos translúcidos. Liliana partiu para um estilo multicor onde a diversão foi basicamente colocar os papéis e passar cola. A Marta planejou o dela de modo que cada área do pote teve uma cor diferente. Os dois potes agora residem na mesa de cabeceira do quarto das meninas, cada um guardando seus preciosos tesouros. A minha inspiração foi esse post no A Little Slice of Life. Dá só uma olhada para um passo-a-passo mais completo.

Sorry, I’m still on “catch up” mode here… The weekend before last I finally took part on a wool spinning workshop. I waited sooo long for this moment. It has been at least four years since I was first interested in spinning. My inspiration was a group of ladies that would sell their ware in the Stroud’s Farmer’s Market. They didn’t sell the yarn itself but hand knitted items made with their hand spun yarn. Each piece had an incredible beauty to it. I think it was a combination of the irregularity of the yarn and the perfection of their knitting. And the love they put into it, of course! Those ladies also taught how to spin (and dye) wool, but at the time Marta and Liliana were still babies and to find the time to attend even a one hour workshop was pretty impossible.  So when we moved here we happened to land very near the Burr House, a historic house that is also home to a Spinners and Weavers Guild. Only it took me another two years to finally get my hands on a wheel. But it happened and it was such an enjoyable day. After an introduction to the different natural fibers and a bit of history we rolled up our sleeves and tried the drop spindle first. Then we  spent the rest of the afternoon at the wheel. Every beginning is a bit akward and until you get the hanfg of it, spinning  feels a bit like tapping your head and rubbing your belly at the same time. I can’t claim I can spin yet but I can see that with a little bit of practice it is not all that hard. I want to keep practising but need to borrow a wheel first. Meanwhile I’ll keep working with the drop spindle, it goes a bit slower but is very satisfying too.

E cá estou eu ainda atualizando eventos passados! Há dois fins de semana atrás eu finalmente participei de um workshop de fiar lã. Eu esperei tanto por esse momento! Faz pelo menos quatro anos desde que me interessei em produzir fios de lã. A minha inspiração foi um grupo de senhoras que que vendia suas criações no mercado de Stroud. Elas não vendiam os fios, mas peças de tricô feitas com os fios produzidos a mão. Cada peça tem uma beleza toda especial. Acho que é a combinação da irregularidade do fio artesanal com a perfeição do tricô, e muito amor, é claro! A senhoras também ensinavam a fiar e a tingir a lã, mas naquele tempo a Marta e a Lili ainda eram bebês e achar tempo para participar de um workshop era um desafio. Quando mudamos para o Canadá a gente aterrissou pertinho da Burr House, uma casa histórica que também abriga uma associação de tecelões e fiadores. Mas ainda assim eu levei outros dois anos para finalmente colocar as minhas mãos numa roca. Mas aconteceu, e foi um dia muito legal. Depois de uma breve introdução as fibras naturais e um pouco de história arregaçamos as mangas e praticamos primeiro com um fuso. Depois passamos a tarde a praticar na roca. Todo começo é difícil, e até pegar o jeito certo, fiar na roca é igual a bater na cabeça com uma das mãos e fazer círculos na barriga com a outra. Eu naõ posso dizer que sei fiar ainda, mas posso sentir que com apenas um pouco de prática, não é assim tão difícil. Eu quero continuar praticando, mas agora tenho que arrumar uma roca emprestada. Enquanto isso eu vou desenvolvendo a minha habilidade com o fuso.

Happy Summer Solstice to you! Summer is definitely here. I just can believe how quickly Marta’s first year at school went by.  It feels like yesterday that I posted this picture of her proudly holding Warren’s hand on her first day of school. She thoroughly enjoyed her time at nursery thanks to the gentleness of the Waldorf method and to the loving dedication of the teachers. It was a beautiful journey for her and for our family. She’s already looking forward to kindergarten, but not before enjoying the three months of holidays ahead of us. On our plans include building a bread oven next weekend followed by a trip to a friend’s cottage the following week, the Summer Arts Festival that Warren is putting together, a trip to Philly, and a trip to the west coast of Canada. Sounds busy but our travelling is well spread across the three months and there will be lots of home time too. I didn’t make any plans for the weeks we’re here and we’ll play it by ear. There are lots of things I want to do with the girls and in our first week we started by making some pinwheels. Fun to make and fun to play with.

I thought I’d also share what we gave the teachers from parent and tot group Liliana and I attended this year. The coasters idea came form the book Last Minute Patchwork and Quilted Gifts from Joelle Hoverson. And so did the idea for the wrapping!

O verão chegou! Nem acretito como passou rápido esse primeiro ano da Marta na escola. Parece que foi ontem que eu postei essa foto dela de mãos dadas com o Warren no primeiro dia de aula. Ela curtiu muito esse ano no maternal graças a gentileza do método Waldorf e a dedicaçãocarinhosa das professoras. Foi uma linda jornada para a Marta e para a nossa família. Ela agora está toda impolgada para começar o jardum da infância, mas não antes de aproveitar os três meses de férias. Os nossos planos incluem a construção de um forno de pizza nesse fim de semana, estadia na casa de férias de amigos queridos, o festival de artes que o Warren está organizando, uma vigem a Filadélfia e uma viagem a costa oeste do Canadá. Pode parecer muito, mas as viagens estão bem espaçadas, e nesses três meses também teremos muito tempo em casa. Eu não fiz planos para quando estivermos em casa, mas tem muitas coisas que quero fazer com as meninas.  Na primeira semana começamos com cataventos. Divertido de fazer e de brincar!

I was totally captured by the smplicity of  the pillowcase tote I found in the book Simply Sublime Gifts by Jodi Kahn. The idea stuck with me and I looked up the Internet, blogsphere and Flickr for even more pillowcase inspiration. Next, I found myself in the thrift shop checkout with ten pillowcases in my arms. This all happened so timely too, for this is the last week of school for Marta. And guess what I made for the teachers? You are right. Pillowcase totes, of course.  I loved the way they turned out and next time I’ll try to add a lining by sewing with two pillow cases, one inside of the other, to make it a bit more robust. Then I’d like to try this one from the Sewing Dork , this one from the Greetings from the Shady Grove and a pillowcase dress for the girls too.

Eu fui totalmente cativada pela simplicidade da bolsa feita de fronha que eu achei no livro Simply Sublime Gifts by Jodi Kahn. A idéia ficou rodando na minha cabeça e eu procurei por mais idéias na internet, blogesfera e Flickr por mais inspiração. Logo em seguida eu me encontro no caixa do brechó com dez fronhas nos braços. Tudo isso aconteceu com um timing perfeito, pois essa é a última semana de aula da Marta. E adivinha o que as professoras vão ganhar? Acertou, bolsa feita de fronha. Claro! Eu adorei o resultado e na próxima vou tentar colocar um forro costurando duas fronhas juntas para ficar mais resistente. Depois eu gostaria de tentar essa aqui da Sewing Dork, essa aqui do Greetings from the Shady Grove e um vestido também feito de fronha para as meninas too.

Both Marta and Liliana are in need of new sun hats. A few weeks ago I found a free pattern I really liked and gave it a try. The hat turned out beautiful, really. I loved every bit of it. Only it came out too small for both Marta or Liliana. Oh, how frustrating. I did measure their heads, by the way, and it still came out small. Gotta keep practicing. Not all is lost though and my lovely soon-to-be one year old niece will be the happy owner of this cute hat. That made me happy again!

Tanto a Marta quanto a Liliana precisam de novos chapéus de sol. Há algumas semanas atrás eu achei um molde de graça do qual gostei muito e resolvi experimentar. O chapéu ficou lindo de morrer. Amei cada pedaço dele. A pena é que ficou muito pequeno tanto para a Marta quanto para a Liliana. Que frustração. Mesmo tendo medido, ainda saiu errado. Preciso continuar praticando. Mas nem tudo está perdido e aminha sobrinha flinda vai ser a dona desse chapéu tão fofo. Fiquei feliz de novo!

I really have been sewing up a storm. Through April and May I attended a once-a-week evening sewing class at our local community centre. I joined in to enlarge my sewing repertoire but also to reach a little bit further out in my social life, beyond the children’s school! It lasted for eight weeks and was a delight from beginning to end. It is really lovely to share your ideas and results with a group of like minded enthusiastic sewists. Like blogging, only in real time. I made this blouse during the course just in time to enter it on the Spring Top Sew Along 2011 organised by Rae from Made by Rae. I didn’t start the blouse for that reason but stumbled upon it and thought it would be fun to join in. Guess what? From 303 tops entered, it was selected with another 47 to run for the  Best Top Award (Readers Choice). Never expected it but was chuffed to bits. Here’s the Reader’s choice winner and here for the judges choice.

The pattern I used was Simplicity 2322 and the fabric is 100% cotton purchased on sales at Fabricland. The picture doesn’t show it well but the fabric is also embroidered.

Eu tenho costurado um bocado. Durante abril e maio eu participei de uma aula de costura, uma vez por semana, em um dos centros comunitários da nossa cidade. Eu entrei na aula para aumentar o meu repertório de costura mas também aumentar o alcance da vida social além da escola das crianças. Durou oito semanas e foi ótimo do início ao fim. è muito bom poder compartilhar idéias e resultados com outras costureiras entusiasmadas como eu. Como no blog, só que em tempo real. Eu fiz essa blusa durante o curso e foi no tempo certo para entrá-la no concurso Spring Top Sew Along 2011 organizado pela Rae do Made By Rae. Eu não fiz a blusa por essa razão, mas quando me deparei com o concurso achei que seria divertido. Por que não? E adivinha o quê? Ela foi selecionada (junto com outras 47) entre 303 blusas para concorrer ao prêmio de melhor blusa (escolha dos leitores). Nunca imaginava ser selecionada, mas fiquei felicíssima com a honra! O molde que usei é Simplicity 2322 e o teciso é de puro algodão comprado numa liquidação da Fabricland. Tem um bordado que corre por cima do tecido, mas que não dá para ver na foto.
