Rio’s Botanical Garden has always been one of my favourite parks in town. Yesterday we spent a good four hours with the children exploring and admiring the beauties and hidden treasures of this place. We picked some star fruit (carambola) from the ground, watched monkeys playing about, observed a mosquitoes hide out and delighted in the festival of colours and shapes of tropical flowers and plants. It is most definitely a feast for the eyes!

Rio de Janeiro’s Botanical Garden has history too. It was created by the Portuguese court in 1808 as an acclimatizing garden for the spices brought from the West Indies. In the same year the Regent Prince of Brazil, Portugal and Algarves  D. João VI. and the royal family fled to Brazil from the threats  of Napoleonic invasion to Portugal and established the government headquarters in Rio de Janeiro. In awe of its nature D. João declared the acclimatizing gardens a botanical garden calling it the Royal Horticulture. Since 1822 it has been open to public visitation. Today it is also a well respected research institution focused on biodiversity and environmental conservation. Its arboretum hosts an impressive collection of 8.000 species of local and foreign flora. If you’re ever in Rio don’t miss it!!!

O Jardim Botânico do Rio sempre foi um dos meus parques preferidos da cidade. Ontem, nós passamos uma boas quatro horas lá com as crianças explorando e admirando a beleza e os tesouros desse jardim tão especial. Nós pegamos carambolas do chão, assistimos a um grupo de micos brincando, observamos um esconderijo de mosquitos e deleitamos num festival de cores e formas das plantas tropicais. O Jardim Botânico é definitivamente um banquete para os olhos.

O Jardim Botânico do Rio de Janeiro também tem história. Ele foi criado pela côrte portuguesa em 1808 como um jardim de aclimatação para as especiarias vindas das Índias Orientais. No mesmo ano o Príncipe Regente D. João VI e a família real fugiram das ameaças de invasão napoleônica a Portugal e estabeleceram a sede do governo do Reino do Brasil, Portugal e Algarves no Rio de Janeiro. Maravilhado com a natureza, D. João declarou o jardim de aclimatação um jardim botânico nomeando-o Horto Real. Desde 1822 o jardim está aberto a visitação pública. Hoje o jardim Botânico do Rio de Janeiro é também uma importante e respeitada instituição de pesquisa com foco na conservação da biodiversidade e preservação do meio ambiente. O seu arboreto abriga uma coleção de mais de 8.000 espécies diferentes da flora nacional e de outras partes do mundo. Se você vier visitar o Rio não deixe de ir passear no Jardim Botânico!!!

Whilst trying to keep a healthy rhythm for the children here in Rio we have been managing to fit a little bit of culture in between all the social events with family and friends. Not so easy. But at the end of last week we made it to the Museu Casa do Pontal, a lovely museum of Brazilian Popular Art. This museum is set in a beautiful semi-rural location and surrounded by a lovely garden. The pieces in display represent the many aspects of the lives of the people of Brazil: professional or marginal activities, their relationship with family and society,  traditions, faith and so on. It is the history of a few generations portrayed with naivety, humor and poetry. I enjoyed the whole of the collection but the Carnival section was the one that truly captured my fancy. I so love the colours and the sense of joyful celebration the costumes convey.

When we got to the museum there was a school group just fininshing their guided visit. I just loved the way Marta joined right in!

Enquanto tentamos manter um ritmo saudável para as crianças aqui no Rio, também temos conseguido ter um pouquinho de vida cultural em meio a tantos compromissos sociais com amigos e família. Não é  fácil. No final da semana passada nós fomos ao Museu Casa do Pontal, um museu de arte popular brasileira. Esse museu fica numa região semi-rual do Rio no meio de um belo jardim. As peças em exposição mostram a vida do povo brasileiro em seus mais variados aspectos: atividades profissionais ou marginais, relações com a família e sociedade, tradições, fé e etc… É a história de várias gerações narradas com uma certa inocência, humor e poesia. Eu gostei de toda a coleção, mas a seção do carnaval é que realmente capturou a minha imaginação. Eu adoro as cores e o sentimento de alegria que as fantasias transmitem.

Quando chegamos ao museu havia um grupo escolar terminando a sua visita guiada. Eu adorei o jeito que a Marta simplesmente se juntou a eles.

Yesterday we took the girls to beach for the first time since we arrived in Rio. This is actually the same spot where my parents used to take my sister and I when we were kids and there I played with the mermaids, I gave parties for the fish and built castles for all sorts of imaginary creatures every (sunny) weekend.

The ocean in Rio is not exactly calm and you need to be savvy to enjoy a swim safely in it. The special thing about this spot is that there is a bend in the shore that somehow makes the sea there a bit friendlier. Yesterday it was just perfect for little children as natural pools formed from the movements of the tide and waves on the sand. Warren and I delighted in watching Marta and Liliana nurturing their senses by exploring the great expanses of sand, the very cold and salty water and the playful crashing waves. They took it all in so beautifully. They also enjoyed the iconic “biscoito Globo” and ice lolly just because you couldn’t go to beach in Rio and miss that. And to finalise a great afternoon we watched one of the most beautiful spectacles on Earth: the Sun setting on the beach! We felt so blessed.

The beach and the ocean, in particular, have always triggered in me two strong feelings from a very early age: humbleness and gratitude for being on Earth. I loved to revisit this childhood place and I’m thrilled I was able share it with Warren, Marta and Liliana.

Ontem nós levamos as meninas a praia pela primeira vez desde que chegamos ao Rio. Na mesma praia onde meus pais levavam a mim e a minha irmã quando crianças e onde eu muito briquei com as sereias, fiz banquetes para os peixes e castelos para todos os tipos de criaturas imaginárias.

O mar no Rio não é dos mais calmos e requer uma certa “esperteza” para se brincar nele sem risco. O especial dessa praia onde fomos é que há uma curva na costa que de alguma maneira faz o mar ficar mais amigável. Ontem, então, estava um paraíso para crianças pequenas pois estava cheio de piscinas naturais formadas pelo movimento da maré e das ondas na areia. Eu e o Warren adoramos observar a Marta e a Liliana nutrirem seus sentidos com tanta areia, água super gelada e salgada, o som das ondas. E claro, elas também curtiram o icônico biscoito Globo e picolé. E para finalizar uma tarde maravilhosa nós assistimos a um dos espetáculos mais bonitos da terra: o pôr do sol na praia! Que benção!

A praia e o mar, em particular, sempre causaram em mim dois sentimentos muito fortes desde muito pequena: humildade e gratidão por estar na Terra. Eu adorei revisitar esse lugar da minha infância e principalmente de ter podido dividir essa alegria com a minha família.

It is such a joy to see Marta and Liliana playing with the toys we make for them. It is very rewarding after all the love and work that we put into them. The wind wands were my Christmas present for the girls and their play was completely spontaneous. I never take pictures of the children when they are immersed in their play because doing so takes them completely out of it. As they become self aware the magic is completely gone. Unless I can photograph without being seen I just don’t. I took those pictures while hiding behind the kitchen door balancing in one foot and in less then two minutes. Then I ran to put the camera away and came back to scene. I got the idea for the wind wands from this wonderful book called  “Creative play for your toddler – Steiner Waldorf expertise and toy projects for 2 – 4s ” by Christopher Clouder and Janni Nicol.

É uma alegria ver a Marta e a Liliana brincando com os brinquedos que fazemos para elas. A argola com fitas foi o meu presente de Natal para as duas e a brincadeira surgiu espontâneamente. Eu nunca tiro foto das crianças enquanto elas estão entretidas em suas brincadeiras porque uma vez que a câmera é vista a brincadeira acaba. Elas ficam conscientes de si e a mágica se desfaz. A não ser que eu consiga fotografá-las sem ser vista eu não fotografo. Eu tirei essas fotos de trás da porta da cozinha enquanto me equilibrava num pé só, e em menos de dois minutos. Depois eu corri para guardar a câmera e voltei a cena. Eu tirei a idéia das argolas com fitas do livro “Brincadeiras criativas para seu filho” de Christopher Clouder and Janni Nicol.

Things have been slow here ,crafts wise. Both Marta and Liliana had a bad cold that pretty much rocked our rhythm for the past two weeks. Sleepless nights and a super-clingy baby meant that I couldn’t do much other than try to catch up with the house chores and tend to my babies. Brazil is also only a week away, so that kept me from starting any big projects recently, specially knitting projects.

However, I do have something to share. I made a birthday crown for Marta to wear when blowing out the three candles from her cake. The birthday crown is an European tradition that is also widely adopted by the Waldorf community around the world.  And since I had my sleeves already rolled up, I went ahead and made a second one as gift to Marta’s best friend whose birthday happens to be just a week apart from hers. Marta loved her crown and was a very proud birthday girl!

I came up with the design myself but did a search on Flickr for inspiration and used the book Creative Play for your toddler for some guidelines on how to make a play crown.

As coisas têm andado um pouco devagar por aqui no que diz respeito aos trabalhos manuais. Tanto a Marta quanto a Liliana tiveram uma baita gripe que sacudiu toda a nossa rotina por duas semanas. Noites sem dormir e um neném que só quer colo significaram que tudo o que eu consegui fazer foi correr atrás das tarefas de casa e cuidar dos meus dois bebês. O Brasil também está só a uma semana de distância, e achei melhor não começar nenhum projeto novo, muito menos detricô.

No entanto, eu tenho uma coisa para mostrar. Eu fiz uma coroa de aniversário para a Marta usar para soprar as três velinhas do seu bolo. A coroa de aniversário é uma tradição européia que também é amplamente adotada pela comunidade Waldorf ao redor do mundo. E uma vez que eu já estava com a mão na massa eu aproveitei e fiz umas egunda coroa de presente para a melhor amiga da Marta que faz anos uma semana depois dela. Marta adorou sua coroa e vestiu-a orgulhosamente!

Eu mesma inventei o design das coroas, mas dei uma olhada no Flickr para inspiração e também consultei o livro Brincadeiras criativas para seu filho para instruções gerais de como se fazer uma coroa de brinquedo.

I’m always amazed at how the bread baking workshop that Warren runs manages to gather such a nice group of people, every time! And it wasn’t any different this last Sunday at the Toronto Waldorf School. The girls and I visited for a little while and even stayed for lunch this time. The mood was cheerful, light and playful even though everybody had been working hard all morning. Marta was quick to get her hands dirty and was delighted to find a friend to play with in the group. Yummy, freshly baked pita bread completed a feast made of gorgeous food that the participants brought for a pot luck lunch. The pictures I took capture a bit of the mood of the day but unfortunately the lighting wasn’t great. As it happens the kitchen at TWS is painted green which is not very conducive to good photography (of food or people).

While still on bread, Warren recently baked bread with third grade students and parents at the Toronto Waldorf School. The children thanked him with a series of drawings depicting what stood out for them from the experience. Too cute. Eu acho fascinante como a oficina de pão que o Warren conduz sempre atrai um grupo de pessoas super interessante. E não foi diferente nesse domingo passado na Toronto Waldorf School. Eu e as meninas fizemos uma visita rápida no meio do dia e até ficamos para o almoço dessa vez. O clima estava descontraído, leve e divertido, ainda que todo mundo estivesse trabalhando duro a manhã toda. Num minuto a Marta colocou a mão na massa e ficou super feliz de ter um amigo para brincar nesse grupo. Deliciosos pães pita (ou pão árabe) completaram o banquete formado por pratos que os participantes trouxeram para o almoço americano. As fotos que eu tirei capturam um pouco do clima, mas infelizmente a luz não era ideal. A cozinha da escola é pintada de verde o que não é ideal para fotografia (de comida ou de gente).

Aproveitando que o assunto é pão, recentemente o Warren fez pão com os alunos e pais da terceira série da Toronto Waldorf School. As crianças depois o agradeceram com uma série de desenhos sobre o que mais os marcou sobre a experiência. Saturday morning we headed out to our favourite park in the area to enjoy the fun the Winter has to offer. The lake is now completely frozen and is a huge outdoors skating rink. Amazingly beautiful. We were so excited about it that last week we all got ice skates for ourselves. Even Marta got one. It was, in fact, our birthday present to her. Hers is a more primitive version of an ice skate, with two blades in each foot that you strap on to the snow boot. Great for small children. Sadly, I wasn’t able to get a picture of her in action though she enjoyed being pulled and gliding on the ice thoroughly. So much so that she now says she wants to be an ice hockey player and runs around the house hitting a pom pom ball with a wooden stick. Imagine that!?!

Sábado de manhã nós fomos ao nosso parque favorito aproveitar uma das diversões que o inverno oferece. Agora o lago está completamente congelado e virou um imenso rinque de patinação ao ar livre. Lindo de tirar o fôlego. A gente ficou tão animado que semana passada compramos patins de gelo para todos nós. Até a Marta ganhou um, que foi na verdade, o seu presente de aniversário. O patins dela é uma versão mais primitiva, com duas lâminas em cada pé e que você prente na bota de neve, e é ótimo para crianças pequenas. Infelizmente eu não consegui tirar uma foto dela em ação apesar de ter adorado ser puxada e deslizar no gelo. Tanto que agora ela diz que quer ser jogadora de hóquei de gelo e corre pela casa batendo num pom-pom com um pedaço de madeira. Já imaginou!?!

Our sweet little Marta is 3 today. Happy Birthday sweetheart! We’re so proud to be your parents. Thanks for choosing us.

We had a very small birthday celebration for Marta yesterday. A friend came over with her two children and we baked pizza together, opened presents and Marta wore a birthday crown to blow out the candles. We had hours of fun.

A nossa Martinha completa 3 aninhos hoje. Feliz aniversário Martoca querida. Nós temos muito orgulho de ser seus pais, muito obrigada por nos ter escolhido!

Ontem nós celebramos o aniversário da Marta com uma festinha bem modesta. Uma amiga veio com seus dois filhos  e nós fizemos pizza juntos, abrimos presentes e a Marta vestiu a coroa de aniversariante para soprar o bolo. Foram horas de diversão!

Yesterday we went down to Toronto for a small Winter festival at High Park. This park is not close to us at all, but as we are on a quest to get to know the city better we decided to make the extra effort and drive 40 minutes to get there. It turned out to be a beautiful park that also hosts a mini zoo, a unexpected bonus for our day out.  The festival itself was super simple, and we were very glad for that because it was actually perfect for small children.  Now, the funny thing is that from the five attractions they offered three were sweet, literally! Free cider, roasting marshmallows and pulling taffy. We were able to keep Liliana away from the marshmallow and taffy but Marta… not quite so!

Ontem nós fomos a Toronto para um pequeno festival de inverno no High Park. Esse parque não é nem um pouco perto de onde moramos, mas como estamos tentando conhecer melhor a cidade nós decidimos encarar 40 minutos de carro para cegar lá. High Park é um parque bem bonito que também abriga um mini zoológico, um bônus inesperado para o nosso passeio. O festival mesmo foi bem simples, o que achamos ótimo pois é o ideal para crianças pequenas. Agora, o engraçado é que das cinco atrações oferecidas três eram doces: suco de maçã quente de graça, marshmallow na fogueira e demonstração de como fazer bala de caramelo. Nós conseguimos manter a Liliana longe do marshmallow e caramelo, mas já a Marta… nem tanto!
