hands follow heart

As many of you know our small family is a bit of a cultural mashup. I’m originally from Brazil, Warren is American, our girls are British and just a year and a half ago we moved to Canada. As if this wasn’t enough cultural diversity for one family Warren comes from Jewish background and I from Catholic. Though neither of us were brought up religious some traditions are part of our identities as individuals and also part of  the larger context of our extended families. More because of our families and specially because we live far away from them we feel it is important bring those traditions alive for Marta and Liliana whenever is possible and as long as it feels true to us. So last week we had a small but special Hanukkah celebration. We sang Hanukkah songs, lit up the Hanukkah Menorah and ate delicious potato latkes with applesauce and sour cream and read a story about Hanukkah. We thought it was going to be a bit much to celebrate Hanukkah and Advent but in the end it worked really well. After all both festivals celebrate the achetypal search for inner light in the darkest time of the year.

Como muitos de vocês sabem, a nossa pequena família é uma boa salada cultural. Eu sou brasileira, Warren americano, nossas filhas britânicas e há um ano e meio nós mudamos para o Canadá. Como se isso não fossediversidade cultural o suficiente a família do Warren é de origem judáica e a minha católica. Apesar de nenhum de nóster sido criadosreligiosos algumas tradições são partes de nossas identidades como indivíduos e também parte de um contexto maiorque sõ as nossas famílias. Mais por causa de nossas famílias (do que de nós mesmos), nós achamos queimportante para a Marta e a Liliana experienciarem essas tradições sempre que possível e sempre que continue sendo verdadeiro para nós. Então nas semana passada nós fizemos uma pequena celebração do Hanukkah. Cantamosmúsicas de Hanukkah, acendemos a Menorah (cadelabro de nove velas), e comemos uma deliciosa refeição feita de panqueca frita de batatas, purê de maçã e creme azedo e também lemos estórias sobre essa tradição judáica. Nós achamos que seria um pouco demais celebrar o Advento e Hanukkah num mesmo dia, mas acabou que funcionou suber bem. Afinal os dois festivais represental a busca arquetípica da luz interior na época mais escura do ano.

Saturday mornings we have pancakes for breakfast in our home. A family tradition that is so anticipated that the girls start asking if it is pancake day on Monday (and everyday thereafter)! Warren is the pancake master and, oh does he make yummy ones! Fancy, with sourdough,  sour cream and always with fruit salad to go with them.  Earlier this year I fell in love with the idea of making pancakes in the shape of flowers but it has been only for the past few weeks that I have been playing with it. It took me a few tries to get the hang of it and only now the drawings can actually be recognised! We don’t have a squirt bottle so I have been using a turkey baster instead and it works pretty well. Marta and Liliana love to put in requests for snails, butterflies, cats, cows… and mama tries to rise up to the challenge. We all have fun!

Sábado é dia de panqueca no café da manhã. É uma tradição de família que gera tanta expectativa que as meninas começam a perguntar na segunda-feira se é dia de panqueca e continuam por toda semana. Warren é o mestre cuca, e que delícia de panquecas ele faz. Sofisticada, fermendo natural, creme azedo e sempre salada de frutas para acompanhar. No início do ano eu me apaixonei por essa idéia de fazer panquecas em forma de flores mas só há algumas semanas é que comecei a experimentar. Levou um bom tempo até eu pegar o jeito, e só agora é que está dando para identificar os desenhos.  Marta e a Liliana adoram pedir caracóis, borboletas, gatos… e mama aqui tenta não decepcionar. No final todo mundo se diverte!

Between having lost track of the things I wanted to post about and not having the time to properly photograph the things I’ve been working on you were left with what we were up to this past weekend. We were busy but it was a lot of fun, and involved a lot of food making! Yum.

Entre ter perdido a minha lista de posts e não ter tido tempo de fotografar as coisas nas quais tenho trabalhado, sobrou pra vocês o que a gente fez nesse fim de semana passado.  Foi um fim de semana cheio, mas muito divertido e com muita comida boa! Delícia!

Comemos uma deliciosa e suculenta romã. Já viram romã grande assim? Nunca tinha visto assim no Brasil, só pequenininhas.

Passeamos na floresta e achamos uma casa de fadas enorme e também cogumelos gigantes.

Fizemos biscoitinhos de gengibre usando a receita do livro do Warren Baking Bread With Children.

E finalmente fizemos a nossa caminhada noturna com as lanternas para celebrar o festival de são Martinho.

Bom fim de semana!

We spent most of our Saturday working at home. We harvested the last carrots and beets from the garden and prepared the beds for their long Winter sleep. Our garden did really well this year and we are very proud of our produce, even the tiny carrots! But more valuable than what we produced was actually having the children exposed to Nature’s cycles as well as a direct experience of where some of our food comes from. Plus, of course, their enthusiasm in helping, observing and noticing the changes in the plants. We are looking forward to next Spring and already thinking what we will plant.

On Saturday we also raked and played on a pile of dried leaves. Oh, the giggles! And there was some knitting thrown in there too. I have started a pink vest for Marta because now she likes all things pink, of course. It is almost finished now and I’ll will be sharing it with you soon.

Nós passamos a maior parte do sábado trabalhando em casa. Nós colhemos as últimas cenouras e beterrabas e preparamos a terra para o longo sono do inverno.  A nossa horta foi muito produtiva esse ano e estamos muito orgulhosos do que produzimos, até das cenouras miniaturas! Mais importante do que as colheitas em si, foi expor as crianças aos ritmos da natureza bem como a experiência direta de onde vem alguns dos alimentos que consumimos. E claro, o entusiamo com que elas ajudam, observam e notam as mudanças nas plantas. Já estamos animados com a primavera e pensando no que vamos plantar.

No sábado nós também varremos o jardim e brincamos no monte de folhas secas. E teve também um tricô, pois comecei um colete cor de rosa para a Marta porque agora ela gosta de tudo rosa, claro. Já está quase pronto e logo logo mostro como ficou.

It’s ready! On Sunday we inaugurated our bread oven in big style. We invited friends over and made delicious pizza together. Now home is complete!

I made this oven sprite to be the guardian of our oven. I really enjoyed the way it turned out quite a fire being.

Está pronto! No domingo nós inauguramos o forno de pão em grande estilo. Convidamos amigos e fizemos deliciosas pizzas juntos. Agora a nossa casa está completa!

On this Thanksgiving weekend we are very grateful for this welcoming land, for having a roof over our heads, food to eat, caring families  and good friends to share life with.  Happy Thanksgiving to you.

The long weekend was warm and sunny and we took full advantage of it to work on a bread oven for our house. We also visited a farm, had picnic with friends and came back with three big pumpkins and some more goodness. To wrap up, we just came back from a lovely Thanksgiving meal with very generous and wonderful company. We are so  lucky.

This past week was a bit busy for me and I couldn’t update the blog as often as I’d wished but I have quite a few projects to share with you and I hope I’ll be able to catch up in the next few days.

Nesse fim de semana de Ação de Graças nós somos muito gratos por esse país acolhedor, por termos um teto sobre nossas cabeças, comida na mesa, famílias que se preocupam com a gente e amigos para dividir as alegrias da vida.

O tempo nesse fim de semana longo foi seco e ameno e nós aproveitamos mais essa graça para trabalhar no forno de barro para nossa casa. Nós também visitamos uma fazenda, fizemos um piquenique com amigos e voltamos para casa com três abóroras e outras gostosuras. Para finalizar, nós acabamos de voltar de um jantar de Ação de Graças com amigos muito queridos e generosos.

Semana passada foi um pouco tumultuada para mim e não consegu atualizar o blog como gostaria, mas eu tenho alguns projetos para compartilhar com vocês e espero fazê-lo nos próximos dias.

Warren is away at a conference in California. The girls and I started a bad cold on Thursday. The weather forecast predicted a pretty chilly Saturday and I predicted a very boring, stay at home, one. I was wrong! Even though the three of us were feeling a bit under the weather, Marta and Liliana played beautifully for most part of the day and I managed to get a lot of things done in the house. Because we had a couple of commitments on Sunday I didn’t want to risk playing outside and having their colds go worse. So to fill in the afternoon we had a tea party for our favourite dolls. I’m not much of a baker but with the help of my dedicated assistants they turned out pretty yummy and our guests were delighted.

O Warren está na Califórnia, numa conferência. Na quinta feria eu e as meninas pegamos um resfriado. A previsão do tempo era de um sábado frio e a minha previsão era a de um sábado em casa e muito xôxo. E não é que eu estava errada? Apesar de nós três não estarmos nos sentindo muito bem, a Marta e a Liliana brincaram muito bem a maior parte do dia e eu até que consegui fazer várias coisas em casa. Porque tínhamos dois compromissos no domingo eu não quis brincar lá fora e arriscar piorar os resfriados. Então, para encher a tarde de sábado nós fizemos um chá de bonecas. Eu não sou muito de fazer bolo, mas com a dedicação das minhas ajudantes eles ficaram uma delícia e nossos convidados muito satisfeitos.

On Staurday we had a great time picking apples at the Pine Farm Orchards. We went there early to avoid the crowds as it gets pretty busy around midday, specially on weekends. They had nine qualities of apples that you could pick from but we stuck with three: Honey-crisp, Red Cortland and Ambrosia. Trying them out was as fun as picking them and my favourite is Ambrosia, so crisp and flavourful! Now we have 15 kilos of apples to go through. The first batch of apple crumble has already been devoured but more will follow together with apple cake, apple sauce and apple butter!

No sábado nós fomos colher maçãs no pomar da Pine Farm. Chegamos cedo para evitar o período mais cheio que é por volta do meio dia, principalmente no fim de semana. Havia nove diferentes qualidades de maçãs para colher, mas ficamos com apenas três: Honeycrisp, Red Cortland and Ambrosia. Provar as maçãs foi tão gostoso quanto colhê-las e a minha favorita é a Ambrosia. Durinha, crocante e com um sabor maravilhoso. Agora temos que dar conta de 15 quilos de maçãs. A primeira leva de apple crumble já foi devorada mas tem mais junto com bolo de maçã, purê de maçã e manteiga de maçã.
