We’ve been home now for a few days and we are just barely falling back into our routine.  Now we have less than a week for our big travels of this Summer. On Friday we are headed off to Philly for a few days and from there to Vancouver Island in BC for the remaining of August. I’m really looking forward to getting to know the west coast of Canada, as I hear wonders about it! While tiding up the house and getting organised for the trip I keep getting flashbacks of our recent week in the cottage. We had a wonderful time with our lovely friends and I’m ever so grateful for their warmth and hospitality. Thank you Dawne and Tim! Here are some precious moments:

Já tem alguns dias voltamos da nossa semana na casa de lago mas só agora a nossa rotina está entrando nos eixos de novo. No entanto, em menos de uma semana estamos de partida para a grande viagem desse verão. Na sexta-feira vamos para a Filadélfia por alguns dias e de lá para a Ilha de Vancouver, na província de British Columbia aqui no Canada. Eu estou animadíssima para conhecer a costa leste desse país, da qual ouço maravilhas a respeito! Enquanto arrumo a casa e me organizo para a nova viagem, imagens dos bons momentos na casa do lago me vêm a cabeça. Foi tão legal a estadia com nossos queridos amigos Dawne e Tim a quem somos muito agradecidos a tamanha hospitalidade e carinho! Acima alguns momentos preciosos.

O verão está bem devagar aqui na terra do blog… mas aqui vai algumas coisas nos ocuparam nesses últimos dias. Estamos indo para casa de laog dos nossos amigos de novo por alguns dias. Nos vemos semana que vem!

First we chose our colours, then cut the tissue paper in small pieces, wrapped the bowls in clingfilm, and started gluing. We let them dry outside where it was warm and sunny and a few hours later… voi-lá: beautiful translucent bowls. This is a very simple and so satisfying project to do with little ones. Liliana went for a mixed colour approach where the fun was basically to paste the pieces of paper and paint them with the glue. Marta planned hers so that each area of the bowl had a different colour. Their bowls now reside on their bedside table holding a few treasures each. I was inspired by this post at A Little Slice of Life. Check it out for a more detailed tutorial.

Primeiro escolhemos as cores, depois cortamos o papel de seda em pedaços pequenos, revestimos as tigelas em filme e começamos a colar.  Colocamos as tigelas para secar lá fora onde o sol estava brilhando forte e algumas horas depois… voi-lá: dois lindos potinhos translúcidos. Liliana partiu para um estilo multicor onde a diversão foi basicamente colocar os papéis e passar cola. A Marta planejou o dela de modo que cada área do pote teve uma cor diferente. Os dois potes agora residem na mesa de cabeceira do quarto das meninas, cada um guardando seus preciosos tesouros. A minha inspiração foi esse post no A Little Slice of Life. Dá só uma olhada para um passo-a-passo mais completo.

We also cooked beautiful food, had fancy wine, had deep and soul nourishing conversations with our very good friends and hosts. We’ll be back there in three weeks time. We’re lucky!

Nos nossos cinco dias fora nós nadamos muito, andamos de canoa, lemos, brincamos com a natureza, olhamos as crianças se ebaldarem e pintamos o sete. Também fizemos comidas maravilhosas, bebemos vinho chique e muito papo bom com nossos bons amigos. Em três semanas estaremos lá de novo. Mal posso esperar.

We’re off to a friend’s cabin for the long weekend. We’re going to be somewhere between here and Ottawa in a region that looks like there’s more lakes than land. Can’t wait to get there and enjoy a new spot in this big big country. Will be back in this space in the middle of next week and tell you all abou it! Have a great (long) weekend.

Estamos de partida para a casa de lago dos nossos amigos. Estaremos em algum lugar entre aqui e Ottawa, numa região que parece ter mais lagos do que terra firme. Happy Summer Solstice to you! Summer is definitely here. I just can believe how quickly Marta’s first year at school went by.  It feels like yesterday that I posted this picture of her proudly holding Warren’s hand on her first day of school. She thoroughly enjoyed her time at nursery thanks to the gentleness of the Waldorf method and to the loving dedication of the teachers. It was a beautiful journey for her and for our family. She’s already looking forward to kindergarten, but not before enjoying the three months of holidays ahead of us. On our plans include building a bread oven next weekend followed by a trip to a friend’s cottage the following week, the Summer Arts Festival that Warren is putting together, a trip to Philly, and a trip to the west coast of Canada. Sounds busy but our travelling is well spread across the three months and there will be lots of home time too. I didn’t make any plans for the weeks we’re here and we’ll play it by ear. There are lots of things I want to do with the girls and in our first week we started by making some pinwheels. Fun to make and fun to play with.

I thought I’d also share what we gave the teachers from parent and tot group Liliana and I attended this year. The coasters idea came form the book Last Minute Patchwork and Quilted Gifts from Joelle Hoverson. And so did the idea for the wrapping!

O verão chegou! Nem acretito como passou rápido esse primeiro ano da Marta na escola. Parece que foi ontem que eu postei essa foto dela de mãos dadas com o Warren no primeiro dia de aula. Ela curtiu muito esse ano no maternal graças a gentileza do método Waldorf e a dedicaçãocarinhosa das professoras. Foi uma linda jornada para a Marta e para a nossa família. Ela agora está toda impolgada para começar o jardum da infância, mas não antes de aproveitar os três meses de férias. Os nossos planos incluem a construção de um forno de pizza nesse fim de semana, estadia na casa de férias de amigos queridos, o festival de artes que o Warren está organizando, uma vigem a Filadélfia e uma viagem a costa oeste do Canadá. Pode parecer muito, mas as viagens estão bem espaçadas, e nesses três meses também teremos muito tempo em casa. Eu não fiz planos para quando estivermos em casa, mas tem muitas coisas que quero fazer com as meninas.  Na primeira semana começamos com cataventos. Divertido de fazer e de brincar!

Aqui vai também o que demos para a professora e assistente do grupo de recreação que eu levo a Liliana. A idéia do porta copos vem do livro Last Minute Patchwork and Quilted Gifts da Joelle Hoverson. E a idéia do embrulho também!

Marta, Liliana and I spent a good five weeks working on a birthday present for Warren. We made him a collection of handmade books. The first week we worked on the covers, making watercolour paintings. The second week we bound the books. The third and forth weeks we filled the pages with beautiful drawings. Finally, on the last week we wrapped them as gifts. It was actually a very interesting process for the girls. From the beginning I told them we were making books to give to Papa for his birthday but when we were making the paintings for the cover, they really just enjoyed painting. When we turned the paintings into book covers, added the pages and started the drawing Marta and Liliana wanted the books for themselves. When they realised the activity didn’t just finish but carried on for weeks they really got it that we were making something special for Papa. Yesterday they were just beaming with pride when we gave Warren the presents. Warren was so touched his eyes filled with tears! Such a treasure to witness this moment. Other than the books this lucky man also got a homemade blueberry pie, a bunch of handpicked wild flowers from our backyard and a DVD set of the series Human Planet produced by the BBC (which I can’t wait to watch it myself!).

Eu, Marta e Lili passamos umas boas cinco semanas trabalhando no presente de aniversário para o Warren. Nós fizemos para ele uma coleção de livros feitos a mão. Na primeira semana trabalhamos na capa, fazendo pinturas com aquarela. Na segunda encadernamos os livros, na terceira e quarta enchemos as páginas com lindos desenhos. E finalmente, na última semana, embrulhamos os presentes. Esse foi, na verdade, um processo super interessante para as meninas. Desde o início eu falei que estávamos fazendo um presente para o Papa, mas quando fizemos as pinturas para as capas dos livros elas curtiram fazer só a pintura. Quando as pinturas se transformaram nos livros  e começamos a desenhar, elas quiseram os livros para elas. Quando elas se deram conta de que a atividade não terminava mas continuava a cada semana elas realmente sentiram que estavam fazendo algo especial para o Papa. Ontem elas eram orgulho puro quando deram os presentes para o Warren. O Warren ficou tão emocionado que lágrimas encheram seus olhos! Muito precioso ser testemunha desse momento tão lindo. Tirando os livros, esse papai sortudo também ganhou uma torta de blueberry feita por mim, um bouquet de flores selvagens catadas a seis mãos no nosso jardim e o conjunto de DVDs da série Human Planet produzida pela BBC (que eu estou louca para assistir!).

Hello again! I so not planned this blog break. My apologies to you that came back for new posts only to find the pretty tulips again and again… at least they are nice to look at! I slipped off my routine a while ago and didn’t quite managed to get back to it still, and it is true I have been busy. Busy making things with the children, for the children, for the hubby, for friends, for myself. Busy reading, knitting, sewing, cooking and watching the garden grow. In my absence from this space we also had a visit from the grandparents and lots of activities away from home. I missed both blogging and reading and commenting on my favourite blogs. I’m back and hopeful that I’ll find my blog writing/reading rhythm again.

Here are some pictures of one fun project I did with the girls just before my parents came. We used  paper plates, markers, paper crepe and wooden chopsticks to make masks. I had all the materials at home and the inspiration came to me in a flash one day the girls really needed an activity to focus their energy on and stop getting at each other. I was so grateful that the idea came to me so quickly and that it was very easily achievable too. We made two designs each, enjoyed each moment of the creative process, had our moods transformed and enjoyed a lovely afternoon thereafter!

Olá de novo! Esse recesso bloguístico não foi nada planejado. Perdão aqueles que retornaram a procura de posts novos apenas para se depararem com as fotos da lindas tulipas… pelo menos elas são bonitas de se ver! Há um tempinho atrás eu saí da minha rotina e ainda não consegui retomá-la totalmente. É verdade também que tenho andado ocupada. Ocupada fazendo coisas com as crianças, para as crianças, para o maridão, para amigos, e para mim. Ocupada fazendo tricô, costurando, cozinhando, lendo e vendo o as flores crescerem. Na minha ausência desse espaço também recebemos a visita dos avós e passeamos um bocado. Eu senti falta tanto de escrever no blog quanto de ler e comentat nos meus blogs favoritos. Agora eu estou de volta e com esperanças de achar o meu rítimo de novo.

Aqui vão alguma fotos de um projeto divertido que fiz com as meninas um pouco ante de os meus pais chegarem. Nós usamos pratos de papel, papel crepon, canetinha de feltro, e espetinho de churrasco para fazer máscaras. Eu tinha todos os materiais em casa e a inspiração me veio como um raio num dia que as meninas realmente precisavam de um atividade para concentrar suas energias e parar de implicar uma com a outra. Tão agrdecida eu fiquei da idéia ter vindo não só rapidamente mas também ter sido tão fácil de executar. Cada uma de nós fez duas máscaras, curtimos cada momento do processo criativo, transformamos os humores e curtimos uma ótimo resto de tarde!
