hands follow heart

The first two pictures  show our fairy garden from last year. We had a great time working on it. The ring was already in the garden so we only needed to clear it out, cover with cardboard to kill the weeds and avoid the grass coming into it. The stones were also already there, we just re-arranged them so they looked harmonious. It turned out beautiful and we really enjoyed the final look. But there was a problem… the fairy garden was too far away from the house. It not only didn’t get appreciated enough but I ended up forgetting to look after it. This year we’ll make the fairy garden right close to our house, where I always thought it should be by the way (but was talked out of it by hubby last year >:s).  The container is perfect and charming and I think it will lend itself beautifully to a fairy garden.  We’ve already got some plants for it and even a new house for the fairies As for the old space, I’ll use it as a flower bed. It is the perfect spot for a pop of colour in our backyard.

A primeira foto mostra o nosso jardim das fadas do ano passado. Nós nos divertimos planejando e arrumando o jardim. O anel de terra já estava lá e nós só tivemos que limpar a área e cobrir com papelão para a grama não voltar. As pedras também já estavam lá e nós só rearranjamos para ficarem mais harmoniosas. Ficou lindo! Mas tinha um problema. Ele ficava muito longe da casa e acabava não sendo tão admirado quando deveria. E, verdade seja dita, a gente acabava esquecando de cuidar dele. Esse ano nós vamos fazer o jardim das fadas do lado de casa, aliás onde eu sempre achei que ele deveria ser (Warren me convenceu a fazer no quintal ano passado!). A tina é perfeita e super charmosa e acho que o jardim vai ficar uma graça. Já o espaço antigo eu vou usar para plantar flores. É o lugar perfeito para um pouco de cor no quintal.

The weather here has been absolutely gorgeous for the past week, and the forecast looks promising too. What better way to celebrate the late arrival of Spring than at a May Festival? That’s exactly what we did Yesterday. Both Warren and I were very busy volunteering with pizza making and the flower crowns respectively, and Marta and Liliana were free to play with their friends in the school grounds and participate in all activities for the children. Marta made a bee line straight to the rope climbing and did it countless times. She could well be a monkey, that girl! Liliana enjoyed the flower crowns and plant pot painting. We all had a great time but came home exhausted… and with a badly sore back for me .

O tempo tem estado simplesmente maravilhoso nessa última semana, e a previsão continua boa. E para celebrar a tão demorada chegada de primavera nada melhor do que o festival de maio? Foi exatamente o que fizemos ontem. Tanto Warren quanto eu estávamos ocupados voluntariando na barraca da pizza e na das coroas de flores, mas as meninas estavam livres para bricar com os amigos e participarem nas atividades oferecidas. Marta foi direto para a corda de subir e não saiu mais de lá. Já a Liliana curtiu mais pintar um vaso de flores. Foi bom para todos nós, mas chegamos em casa exaustos… e eu, com uma terrível dor nas costas

So I have shown you Rio’s natural beauty and also some of the fun things I managed to do while we were in Brazil. But another big highlight of our trip was, of course, family.  How precious is it to see the three cousins together? And one very happy grandma? It is priceless!

Bom, eu já mostrei algumas das belezas nautrais do Rio também as coisas legais que fizemos quando estivemos lá no Brasil. Mas a outro ponto alto da viagem foi, claro, a família. Quão precioso é ver as três primas juntas? E uma vovó muito feliz? Não tem preço!

Because of our trip to Brazil I didn’t have much time to prepare for Easter in advance. So everything I did this year was pretty much last minute. I started on the knitted bunnies on Friday evening and finished them Saturday night. Knitting was easy-peasy, but shaping the bunnies was a bit more challenging for me. I wanted them to be standing up, but they only wanted to graze… so grazing they stayed. I used this tutorial for Just Sew and So.

On Saturday I just had to felt a hollow egg. This project came out of the blue and was completely improvised. First I had imagined a hanging ornament on the likes of this one.  Then I changed my mind and thought the egg should open horizontally to  reveal a surprise, kind of like this. I ended up opening the front of the egg with a crafts knife as I had intended originally but  sewed the opening back on the egg “with hinges”, like a door.  I wanted  to put a felted chick inside but as I ran out of time I ended up filling it up with jelly beans.

On Easter Sunday we woke up with squeals of the delight as Marta and Liliana found their treats on our nature table. As always, the Easter Bunny left its messy prints all over the table and the girls loved it. On Sunday we also dyed some eggs just for the fun of it and to include the girls in an activity that is Easter related. I used Martha’s Stewart’s instructions on how to make marbleized eggs which were very easy to follow.

Por causa da nossa viagem ao Brasil, eu não tive muito tempo para preparar a nossa Páscoa. Tudo o que eu fiz esse ano acabou sendo de última hora. Eu comecei a tricotar os coelhinhos na sexta feira a noite e terminei no sabado também a noite. Tricotar foi super fácil, mas dar a forma ao coelhinho já foi bem mais complicado. Eu queria que eles tivessem ficado de pé, mas eles só quiseram ficar em posição de comer grama. Eu usei o passo-a-passo do Just Sew and So.

No sábado eu decid que tinha que fazer um ovo de feltro oco. Esse projeto me veio do nada e foi completamente improvisado. Primeiro eu imaginei um enfeite de pendurar assim como esse. Depois mudei de idéia e achei que o ovo deveria abrir horizontalmente e revelar uma surpresa, tipo esse aqui. Eu acabei abrindo a frente do ovo como na minha primeira idéia, mas costurei a tampa de volta no ovo com “dobradiças”, como uma porta. Eu queria ter colocado um pintinho também de feltro, mas como acabou o meu tempo eu coloquei Jelly Beans mesmo.

No domingo de Páscoa nos acordamos com as exclamações de alegria da marta e Liliana quando acharam as surpresas que o coelhinho da Páscoa tinha deixado. Como sempre, o danado do coelhinho deixou uma boa bagunça na mesa com as suas patinhas sujas. Mas as meninas adoram! No domingo, para incluir as meninas em alguma atividade relacionada com a Páscoa,  nós também tingimos ovos usando corante alimentar. Eu usei as intruções da Martha Stewart de como fazer ovos mamorizados, bem fácil.

Now that we are back and rested from our long trip I can look back at the highlights of our stay in Brazil. One of them was, of course, to be in Rio.  I love Rio. I grew up there and it doesn’t matter how long I stay away it lives in me. In the last post you can see some of Rio’s natural beauty. I just can’t get over the rock formations and the contrast between the mountains and the sea. Its natural beauty is stunning.

When I’m there with the children and visiting family,  it’s not so easy to do and to see everything I want. But here are a few places that I was happy to re-visit or get to know for the first time.
 

A stroll around Leblon, with a especial break at the Rio-Lisboa bakery just to remind me of the old days when I used to practice Tai Chi at Floresta da Tijuca every weekend and come here for breakfast afterwords.

A visit to the brand new MAR -Museu de Arte do Rio, located in the port zone in Rio’s centre. This is part of a revitalization project around that area of the city.  They have done a great job in combining new and old architecture, not well depicted in my picture, sadly. At this time the mueum is hosting four very interesting exhibitions. One about the city if Rio over 400 years focusing on works of art that have come to symbolize the landscape, the second one is a collection of art from eight important art movements throughout history, the third one is about how the art movements influenced Brazilian art and the forth is about urban, social and cultural transformation with cities as the stage or stimulus for the art.

 Once in the centre of Rio I had to pay a visit to this area called the Saara. It’s a section of downtown where you can find anything you may think of. They are narrow roads, packed with old buildings, people and stuff.
 

A dear friend took me out to this beautiful new restaurant and cinema complex that used to be a rowing club and stadium.  It looks over a lagoon, the Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas. Again, the picture doesn’t make it justice, but the view from the balcony where we ate is breathtaking!

The last place I was happy to re-visit was Praia Vermelha, home to the majestic Sugar Loaf. We didn’t go up on the cable cars this time, but just enjoyed the view from the ground before joining my father to celebrate his 70th birthday!

Agora que já estamos de volta em casa e descansados da longa viagem fica mais fácil olhar para trás e ver quais foram os pontos altos da viagem. Um deles foi, claro, estar no Rio. Eu amo o Rio.  Nascida e criada lá, não importa quanto tempo eu passe longe. O Rio vive em mim. No post passado você pode ver algumas das belezas naturais do Rio. Não me canso das formações rochosas e do contraste entre o mar e as montanhas. Sua beleza natural é magnífica.

Quando estou lá com as crianças e visitando a família, nem sempre é fácil ir a todos os lugares que tenho vontade. Mas aqui estão alguns que fiquei muito feliz de poder conhecer ou rever.

Um passeio pelo Leblon, com uma parada especial na Rio-Lisboa, para relembrar os velhos tempos quando eu fazia Tai Chi todo o fim de semana na Floresta da Tijuca e vinha tomar café da manhã aqui.

Uma visita ao novíssimo MAR – Museu de Arte do Rio, na Praça Mauá, zona portuária do Rio. Ele faze parte do projeto de revitalização do centro do Rio e foi inaugurado dia 2 de março. Fizeram um ótimo trabalho combinando o velho e o novo na arquitetura, pena que minha foto não faz jus a beleza que é. Eles estão com quatro exposições muito bem montadas.

Uma vez no centro, nãp pude deixar de visitar o Saara, onde você acha qualquer coisa! São uma série de ruas estreitas lotadas pr[edios antigos, de gente e de coisas.

Uma amiga me levou para conhecer o Lagoon, um novo complexo de cinemas e restaurantes one antes funcionava o Clube de Remo da Lagoa. A vista da Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas é de tirar o fôlego de bonita!

O último lugar que fiquei feliz de revisitar foi a Praia Vermelha, onde fica o Pão de Açúcar. Dessa vez nós não subimos mas curtimos a vista do chão antes de encontramos meu pai para comemorar seus 70 anos!

Those past three weeks have flown by. Tomorrow we say good bye to Brazil and head back to our home in Canada. We had a wonderful time in Rio and also in Rio Grande do Sul where we spent a week between the city  of Porto Alegre and the country side. As always, this has been a time of intense and delightful social interactions catching up with family and friends. Now it is time to switch our inner thermostat and face the cold weather that still awaits us in the northern hemisphere. But I miss home and i’m happy to be going back to Canada. We will be here again next year for new adventures, for sure!

Essas três últimas semanas passaram voando. Amanhã nós nos despedimos do Brasil e retornamos para a nossa casa no Canadá. A nossa estadia no Rio foi maravilhossa, assim como a semana que passamos no Rio Grande do Sul entre Porto Alegre e a serra gaúcha. Como sempre, tivemos a agenda lotada de compromissos sociais revendo família e amigos. Agora é hora de reajustar o nosso termostato interno para voltarmos ao frio que nos aguarda no hemisfério norte. Mas a saudade de casa é grande e voltaremos felizes. Ano que vem estaremos de volta para nova aventuras, com certeza!

Como estamos nos preparando para ir para o Brasil em poucos dias, limpamos e passamos óleo nas lâminas do patins de gelo.

We had a lovely party to celebrate Marta’s 6th Birthday (yes, it happened a few weeks ago but only now I managed to go through the pictures and edit them).  We invited six of Marta’s closest friends and made pizzas together for lunch. We also played old fashioned games like freeze dance, pass the parcel and pin the tail on the donkey – our house was full of giggles! Thanks to our very talented friends there was a lovely puppet show of  Grandmother Evergreen performed by one of Warren’s student teachers, Mary and the story of the Wee  Bannock told by our dear darling storyteller super star Dawne McFarlane. Marta concentrated hard on her wish before blowing out the candles and proceeded to cut her cake without hesitation. She was a happy Birthday girl!

A Marta teve uma linda festa de aniversário de seis anos (sim, foi há algumas semanas atrás, mas só agra consegui editar as fotos). Nós convidamos seis das amigas mais próximas para almoçar aqui em casa e fizemos pizzas juntos. Também fizemos brincadeiras á moda antiga tais como estátua, passa embrulho e coloque o rabo no burro – a casa era só gargalhadas! Graças às nossas talentosas amigas também teve uma peça de bonecos chamada Grandmother Evergreen, feita por uma aluna do Warren e também uma história contada pela nossa querida amiga e contadora de histórias Dawne McFarlane. Marta se concentrou para fazer o pedido antes de soprar a vela do bolo e o partiu sem hesitar. Ela estava uma aniversariante radiante!
