hands follow heart

Now that we are back from all the trips of this Summer I thought I would have time to catch up with blog writing but instead I find myself busy with work. Nice busy though. I’m using my semi-dormant graphic design skills to make a brochure for an upcoming conference in Waldorf education. I will share more on this later, for now I’m quite enjoying using my brain in some intellectual work again.

So here is what we have been up to last weekend. Warren ran an amazing clay oven building workshop at a friends place. The weather couldn’t have been more perfect for the activity, nor the location! A group of 12 people worked hard to build not one, but two bread ovens. One, quick and dirty, to be fired on Sunday to bake pizzas for lunch and the other one a more artistic and permanent for the hosts’ house.  Those people worked hard and the results were amazing!

Agora que estamos de volta de todas as viagens desse verão eu achei que ia conseguir atualizar o blog com mais frequência. Ao invés, cá estou ocupada com trabalho. Mas um ocupado bom. Eu estou usando as minhas semi-adormecidas habilidades de design gráfico para fazer um programa para um conferência sobre pedagogia Waldorf que se realizará em novembro. Depois falo mais sobre a conferência, por hora eu até que estou curtindo usar o meu cérebro em uma atividade intelectual.

Então, fim de semana passado o Warren deu uma oficina fantástica de como construir um forno de barro. A oficina foi na casa de amigos e o tempo não podia ter sido mais perfeito, nem a localização. Um grupo de 12 pessoas trabalhou junto para construir não só um forno, mas dois. Um, rápido como um rascunho, para ser usado no dia seguinte para fazer pizza para o almoço e outro mais artistico e permanente para a casa dos amigos que ofereceram a casa para a oficina. Esse povo trabalhou foi é duro e o resultado lindo!

Our camping trip was amazing. Seven days and no rain whatsoever! In fact, there were forecasts for thunder showers during our week there and we heard thunders indeed, but the storms managed to miss us somehow. So lucky.

We were at a group site with other five lovely families, though not all at the same time. But there were always other children for the girls to play and friends to share a meal with. What a treat. The beach is definitely the highlight of the park. Lake Huron being so big I was often surprised that the water wasn’t salty as in the ocean! One can easily forget it is a lake. We closed our Summer holidays with a golden key but it feels so good to be back at home! We now look forward to going back to the Pinery next year. Who wants to join us?

A nosso acampamento foi incrível. Sete dias sem nenhuma chuva! A previsão do tempo antecipou temporais com raios e trovoadas, e a gente com certeza escutou os trovões, mas a chuva passou longe. Que sorte.

Nós ficamos numa área de acampamento em grupo com outras cinco famílias, apesar de que  não todas ao mesmo tempo. Mas sempre tinha crianças para brincarem com as meninas e amigos para compartilhar as refeições. Muito especial. A praia é, com certeza, o ponto alto do parque. O lago Huron é tão grande que várias vezes me surpreendi notando que a água não é salgada como a do mar! Fechamos as férias de verão com chave de ouro e é bom estar de volta em casa. Com certeza voltaremos no averão que vem. Quem quer se juntar a nós?

Back at the RSI, a couple of weeks ago, I had a chance to participate in the course Doing Sculpture as a Transformative Activity. While Warren kindly looked after Marta and Liliana I delved into a journey of form and transformation led by the lovely Axel Ewald. For one, it was wonderful to focus on something else other than children or children related subjects. Suddenly I felt so grown up! Jokes apart, I thoroughly enjoyed working with clay and was fascinated by transformative processes in nature that we observed and used to guide our own creative process.  For instance we observed how the leaves in one plant change dramatically in shape across the life span of the plant. We then explored which forces might be at work in those transformations and tried to work with them in our own sculptures. We then did the same observation with the flower part of the plant and again tried to translate it into our work.  It was a week of intense exposure to something completely new to me and it really filled me with wonder. I look forward to one day doing a longer period of plant observation. One day… the seed has been planted.

Há duas semanas atrás, no RSI, eu tive a chance de participar do curso de escultura Doing Sculpture as a Transformative Activity. Enquanto o Warren cuidava das meninas eu mergulhei numa jornada de forma e transformação conduzida pelo muito amável Axel Ewald.  Já valeu pelo fato de eu ter tido o tempo e o espaço para focar em outra coisa que não seja criança ou assunto relacionado a crianças. Me senti adulta novamente! Mas piadas a parte, eu curti muito trabalhar com argila e fiquei fascinada pelo processo transformativo da natureza que observamos e usamos para guiar o nosso processo criativo. Por exemplo, nós obervamos como as folhas de uma planta mudam de forma dramaticamente no curso de sua vida. Nós então exploramos que forças estariam agindo nessas tranformações e tentamos trabalhar com elas nas nossas esculturas. Nós também observamos uma flor ela é formada e tentamos traduzir o processo no nosso trabalho. Foi uma semana de intensa exposição a um assunto completamente novo para mim que me encheu de admiração. Um dia eu gostaria de observar o crescimento de uma planta por um período mais longo. Um dia… a semente fo plantada.

So we finally made it home after our three week holiday. We arrived a couple of days ago but it has taken me about the same amount of days to unpack and organise our things, and it’s not all done yet! We had a wonderful time at the RSI and I owe you a post about the one week sculpture course I took. We also had a great time in Philadelphia with the grandparents which included Liliana’s birthday party, lots of swimming, a trip to the Zoo and to the Aquarium. For me it also included a short trip to NYC all by myself, a super treat. So my friends, I have a lot to tell you. Let’s only hope I can get to write about it! For the moment I’m really enjoying being back at home, reacquainting with all our stuff and delighting in the fruits of our garden. Pure joy!

Finalmente chegamos em casa das nossas férias de três semanas. Nós chegamos há uns dois dias atrás, mas levei o mesmo número de dias para desfazer as malas e organizar todas as nossa coisas, e ainda não acabei! As duas smanas que passamos no RSI foram maravilhosas e estou devendo uma entrada sobre o curso de uma semana de escultura que eu participei. A outra semana que passamos na Filadélfia com os avós paternos também foi recheada de aventuras incluindo a festa de aniversário da Liliana, uma visita ao Zoológico, muita piscina e uma visita ao aquário. E para mim uma curta visita solo a Nova Iorque. Pois então amigos, eu tenho muita estória para contar. Só espero conseguir escrevê-las! No momento eu estou curtindo estar de volta em casa, reconectando com as nossa coisas e me deliciando nos frutos da nossa horta. Pura alegria!

Happy Birthday to my precious sweet little girl who turned two yesterday!

We celebrated her birthday here in Philly with family and friends in a lovely party given by Grandma. Thank you Perky!

Feliz Aniversario para a minha preciosa Lili que completou dois aninhos ontem!

Nos celebramos o aniversario dela aqui na Filadelfia com a familia e amigos numa linda festinha dada pela avo. Obrigada Perky!

We have just completed one week at the Rudolf Steiner Institute. Warren spent the last five days teaching bread baking to a group of nine eager students. He led them on a journey that started with an exploration of the breads that nourished early humanity like chapattis to the decadent croissants and pain au chocolat passing through pitta bread, southern and northern European sourdough in the shape of french peasant loaf, yeasted bagels and spelt cinnamon buns. All they baked was served at the coffee break and instantly devoured proving how delicious and deeply nourishing lovingly baked bread can be. One student and fellow blogger did a fantastic job in documenting this journey in very fine detail. I highly recommend you to check Joy’s blog to see some great pictures and get a feel for the process.

This week I looked after Marta and Liliana while Warren taught. Marta attended the children’s programme and joined the the Fairy Folk group in the mornings. After lunch she chose to stay with Liliana and I but later in the afternoon we would all join the Fairy Folk again for some water play outdoors. I also managed to make good progress on the knitting project I chose to bring, the pomatomus socks, finally! Next week I’ll take part on Doing Sculpture as Transformative Activity and Warren will look after them. I’m so looking forward to it. Thank you Warren!

But before Monday comes we are making the most of our weekend. Today we spent the morning on a lake beach nearby and tomorrow we are headed to Cape Cod area to enjoy a little bit of New Englandishness!

Já faz uma semana que estamos no Rudolf Steiner Institute. Warren passou os ultimos cinco dias ensinando nove animadíssimos estudantes a arte de fazer pão. Ele os conduziu numa jornada que começou com uma exploração dos pães que nutriram a humanidade na sua infância até a complexidade dos croissants e pain au chocolat passando por pão árabe (ou pitta), pães feitos com levedo natural na Europa medieval, bagels com fermento comercial e pão de canela. Tudo o que eles prduziram foi servido no cafezinho da tarde e instantâneamente devorado provando o quão delicioso e nutritivo é o pão feito com amor e entusiasmo. Uma das estudantes e tambem blogueira fez uma excelente documentação do curso nos mínimos detalhes. Eu recomendo uma visita ao seu blog para ver lindas fotos e ter uma idéia do processo.

Essa semana eu fiquei por conta das crianças enquanto o Warren dava aula.  A Marta participou do programa infantil e foi as aulinhas do Fairy Folk pela manhã. Depois do almoço ela escolheu ficar comigo e com a Lili, mas ao final da tarde nós três nos juntamos ao grupo de novo para brincar com água ao ar livre.  Eu tambem fiz ótimo progresso no projeto de tricô que eu escolhi trazer, as meias pamatomus, finalmente! Semana que vem eu vou participar do Doing Sculpture as Transformative Activity enquanto o Warren fica com as meninas. Mal posso esperar. Obrigada Warren!

Mas enquanto a segunda feira não chega nós vamos aproveitando o fim de semana. Hoje fomos a um lago aqui pertinho e amanhã vamos a região de Cape Cod.

We are off to our three week holidays. I’ve been busy busy these past few days doing loads of laundry, cooking, organising and packing for our trip.  I’ve also managed to finish my Trapeze Sundress from the  “Weekend Sewing” book and a skirt. But not the Yard Sale Wrap Skirt (from the same book) that I so wanted to. Sadly I realised I didn’t have enough fabric for it, so I improvised and copied a skirt that I have and love. I apologise for not having any pictures of my projects. I just didn’t have the time to do it properly. When I’m back, promise. Until then have a great Summer!

Estamos de saída para as nossas três semanas de férias. Esses últimos dias foram intensos de tanta coisa para fazer. Roupa para lavar, preparando as comidinhas para a viagem, organizando e fazendo as malas. Em meio a tudo isso eu também consegui acabar o meu vestido trapézio, do livro “Weekend Sewing” e uma saia. Mas não a saia Yard Sale Wrap Skirt que eu tanto queria.  Infelizmente eu não tinha pano o suficiente para ela, então eu improvisei e copiei uma outra saia que eu tenho e adoro. Perdão por não ter nenhuma foto dos meus projetos mas não consegui tempo para fotografá-los direito. Na volta, prometo. Até então tenham um ótimo verão (ou iverno no hemisfério sul).
