I did it. I finished the quilt for my sister’s baby in time for her to take it back home with her. It is a very simple quilt but it turned out it wasn’t so straight forward to make it as I’d imagined. The oval satin stitch proved to be a bit of a challenge to me as the tension on the machine kept changing from stitch to stitch and I couldn’t make them as uniformly as I wished.  My inexperience also got in the way when the bottom fabric gathered unintentionally and forced me to redo a few stitches to get it right. As a result of my little frustrations I cut by half the number of the oval stiches required by the pattern and I think it still works pretty well. Despite the bumpy ride I’m very pleased with the result. I even think the imperfections give it a lot of personality. My sister can rest assured lots of love were poured into this quilt!

Eu terminei o quilt do neném da minha irmã a tempo dela levá-lo de volta para casa. É um quilt muito simples mas não foi tão fácil assim fazê-lo. O ponto oval acetinado provou ser um desafio para mim. A tensão da máquina mudava a cada ponto e eu não consegui fazê-los uniforme o suficiente. Minha inexperiência também me pegou quando o pano de baixo ficou engruvinhado e me forçou a refazer alguns pontos. Por causa dessas pequenas frustrações eu cortei pela metade o numero de pontos ovais pedidos na receita e até que funcionou muito bem. Apesar dos altos e baixos eu gostei muito do resultado e acho que as inperfeições deram ao quilt uma certa personalidade. Minha irmã pode ficar segura de que a manta foi feita com muito amor!

Before we left Canada for our holidays I thought of a few crafts projects to do while here in Brazil. One of them is a very simple baby quilt for my niece/nephew who is due in August.  Because my sister and her husband were coming to spend a week with us and the children here in Rio I thought it would be nice for my sister to choose the fabrics according to what they have in mind for the baby’s room. For this reason I didn’t bring any with me from Canada and couldn’t get started straight away. Although they’ve been here now for five days only yesterday we made it to the fabric store.  My sister picked a rather calming combination of lavender stripes and white on blue dots. Today I spent good part of the morning playing with my mum’s new sewing machine practicing the stitch required for the project.  I’m hoping to have the quilt ready in a couple of days so my sister can take it back with her to the south of Brazil where she lives. I’m very excited about this baby blanket, now let’s just see if I’ll be able to make it in such a short time!

Antes de saírmos de férias eu pensei em alguns projetos de artesanato que pudessem ser feitos enquanto estivéssemos no Brasil. Um deles é uma coberta bem simples para o meu/minha sobrinho/a que vai nascer em agosto. Porque a minha irmã e o seu marido vinham para o Rio nos ver eu achei melhor deixar que ela escolhesse os tecidos de acordo com seus planos para o quarto do neném e não trouxe nenhum comigo do Canadá. Ontem finalmente compramos os tecidos e ela escolheu uma combinação bem calma de listras lilás e azul com bolinhas brancas. Hoje eu passei parte da manhã brincando com a máquina de costura nova da minha mãe e praticando o ponto do acababento da coberta. Eu espero terminar esse projeto em poucos dias para que a minha irmã possa levá-lo com ela de volta para a sua casa, no sul do Brasil. Eu estou super animada com esse projeto mas vamos ver se eu vou mesmo conseguir terminar a tempo.

I got those shades as a birthday gift to myself when we were in Philadelphia last December. It was meant to be a joke. I saw them in a antique/miscellanea shop while enjoying a couple of hours on my own browsing the lovely neighbourhood of Germantown. I thought it would be funny to go back and meet Warren and the children wearing something unusual and so not me. The shades would then go to the children’s dress up box. That was the plan. What I wasn’t counting on was the fact that they are actually very good sun glasses. In fact, the best pair I’ve ever had. The children delighted on seeing their funny looking mama (Warren was a bit shocked) and wanted to play with them straight away. But instead of letting them become a toy permanently I decided to adopt them as my sun glasses despite them looking a bit daft on me. So as soon as I had a chance to go to a yarn shop here in Rio I got some cotton yarn and started a case for my new shades. I made up the pattern and if I had to do another one I would definitely add more rows between the top of the case and the tie. But I’m pretty happy with it as it is.  The colours I chose are as daft as the glasses themselves and I think they actually go very well together!

Esses óculos escuros foram um presente de aniversário que eu comprei para mim mesma quando estivemos na Filadélfia em dezembro passado. Era para ser uma brincadeira. Eu vi os óculos numa loja de antiguidades/brechó quando estava passeando a sós nas ruas do charmoso bairro de germantown. Eu achei que seria divertido voltar para encontrar com o Warren e asmeninas vestindo algo engraçado e absolutamente nada a ver comigo. Depois os óculos iriam para a caixa de brinquedos das crianças. Esse era o plano. No entanto eu não estava contando com o fato de os óculos são na verdade muito bons. De fato, o melhor par de óculos escuros que eu já tive. As meninas adoraram ver a mamãe chegando toda engraçada (o Warren ficou meio chocado) e quiseram logo ir brincando com os óculos. Mas ao invés de deixá-los virarem um brinquedo permanente eu decidi adotá-los apesar deles serem meio ridículos em mim. Então, assim que tive a chance de ir a um armarinho aqui no Rio eu comprei fios de algodão e comecei a fazer uma “caixa” de óculos. Eu mesma inventei o modelo, e se tivesse que fazer outra eu com certeza aumentaria o número de carreiras entre a borda do saco  e o cordão. As cores que eu escolhi são tão ridículas quanto os óculos mas eu acho que eles combinam perfeitamente!

Things have been slow here ,crafts wise. Both Marta and Liliana had a bad cold that pretty much rocked our rhythm for the past two weeks. Sleepless nights and a super-clingy baby meant that I couldn’t do much other than try to catch up with the house chores and tend to my babies. Brazil is also only a week away, so that kept me from starting any big projects recently, specially knitting projects.

However, I do have something to share. I made a birthday crown for Marta to wear when blowing out the three candles from her cake. The birthday crown is an European tradition that is also widely adopted by the Waldorf community around the world.  And since I had my sleeves already rolled up, I went ahead and made a second one as gift to Marta’s best friend whose birthday happens to be just a week apart from hers. Marta loved her crown and was a very proud birthday girl!

I came up with the design myself but did a search on Flickr for inspiration and used the book Creative Play for your toddler for some guidelines on how to make a play crown.

As coisas têm andado um pouco devagar por aqui no que diz respeito aos trabalhos manuais. Tanto a Marta quanto a Liliana tiveram uma baita gripe que sacudiu toda a nossa rotina por duas semanas. Noites sem dormir e um neném que só quer colo significaram que tudo o que eu consegui fazer foi correr atrás das tarefas de casa e cuidar dos meus dois bebês. O Brasil também está só a uma semana de distância, e achei melhor não começar nenhum projeto novo, muito menos detricô.

No entanto, eu tenho uma coisa para mostrar. Eu fiz uma coroa de aniversário para a Marta usar para soprar as três velinhas do seu bolo. A coroa de aniversário é uma tradição européia que também é amplamente adotada pela comunidade Waldorf ao redor do mundo. E uma vez que eu já estava com a mão na massa eu aproveitei e fiz umas egunda coroa de presente para a melhor amiga da Marta que faz anos uma semana depois dela. Marta adorou sua coroa e vestiu-a orgulhosamente!

Eu mesma inventei o design das coroas, mas dei uma olhada no Flickr para inspiração e também consultei o livro Brincadeiras criativas para seu filho para instruções gerais de como se fazer uma coroa de brinquedo.

I’m always amazed at how the bread baking workshop that Warren runs manages to gather such a nice group of people, every time! And it wasn’t any different this last Sunday at the Toronto Waldorf School. The girls and I visited for a little while and even stayed for lunch this time. The mood was cheerful, light and playful even though everybody had been working hard all morning. Marta was quick to get her hands dirty and was delighted to find a friend to play with in the group. Yummy, freshly baked pita bread completed a feast made of gorgeous food that the participants brought for a pot luck lunch. The pictures I took capture a bit of the mood of the day but unfortunately the lighting wasn’t great. As it happens the kitchen at TWS is painted green which is not very conducive to good photography (of food or people).

While still on bread, Warren recently baked bread with third grade students and parents at the Toronto Waldorf School. The children thanked him with a series of drawings depicting what stood out for them from the experience. Too cute. Eu acho fascinante como a oficina de pão que o Warren conduz sempre atrai um grupo de pessoas super interessante. E não foi diferente nesse domingo passado na Toronto Waldorf School. Eu e as meninas fizemos uma visita rápida no meio do dia e até ficamos para o almoço dessa vez. O clima estava descontraído, leve e divertido, ainda que todo mundo estivesse trabalhando duro a manhã toda. Num minuto a Marta colocou a mão na massa e ficou super feliz de ter um amigo para brincar nesse grupo. Deliciosos pães pita (ou pão árabe) completaram o banquete formado por pratos que os participantes trouxeram para o almoço americano. As fotos que eu tirei capturam um pouco do clima, mas infelizmente a luz não era ideal. A cozinha da escola é pintada de verde o que não é ideal para fotografia (de comida ou de gente).

Aproveitando que o assunto é pão, recentemente o Warren fez pão com os alunos e pais da terceira série da Toronto Waldorf School. As crianças depois o agradeceram com uma série de desenhos sobre o que mais os marcou sobre a experiência. A couple of weeks ago we had the wonderful news that my sister is expecting her first child. I just can’t tell you how happy we are for her and her husband. But we’re also happy because our children will have at least one first cousin! I know it is still a bit early (she’s just past 12 weeks) but I couldn’t resist knitting things for the baby. So I made my niece/nephew a Milo vest and a (kind of) matching hat. I was planing a very simple all white vest but as I didn’t have enough yarn I had to improvise the red and beige bottom and sleeve details. Then I ended up with enough red leftover to make a hat. See? One thing leads to the other!

Há umas duas semanas atrás nós recebemos a maravilhosa notícia de que a minha irmã está grávida. Não temos nem plavaras para dizer o quanto ficamos felizes por ela e pelo seu marido. Mas estamos também muitos felizes porque as nossas filhas terão pelo menos um/a primo/a de primeiro grau! Eu sei que está um pouco cedo, pois ela está terminando o terceiro mês, mas eu não pude resistir e já tricotei coisinhas para o bebê. Eu fiz o colete Milo e um chapéu combinando para a minha/meu sobrinha/o. O meu plano era fazer só o colete, branco, assim bem simples. Mas acabou que eu não tinha fio suficiente e tive que improvisar a borda vermelha e bege na barra e nas mangas. Daí acabei com sobras de fio vermelho suficiente para fazer o chapéu. Viu só? Uma coisa leva a outra!

Marta has never shown much interest in dolls until… hmmm, yesterday. It was yesterday that, for the first time, I saw her interacting with a doll as a doll, and not as another plaything. At the parent and tot session she had a doll sitting in a minuscule chair and she was feeding her with a rolling pin (isn’t this great?).  Then at home she got one of the dolls (actually, the only one that is out at the moment) and was pushing  it in the little doll pram we have. She then, very caringly, used a bib to cover it and placed a few toys for it in there. And when it was Marta’s nap time she spontaneously put the dolly to sleep in the doll’s crib. It was so sweet to watch. I then asked Marta if the doll wasn’t going to get cold in there and we came to a conclusion that the doll needs not only a blanket but also a pillow for her crib, Marta was quick to add. So last night I found myself designing a quilt for the doll and thoroughly enjoying the process.

A Marta nunca tinha mostrado muito interesse em bonecas… até ontem. Foi ontem que pela primeira ves eu a vi brincando de boneca e não com a boneca como mais um brinquedo que é levado daqui pra lá ou de lá pra cá. No grupo de recreação ela botou uma boneca sentada numa cadeirinha mínima e deu comida para ela com um rolo de massa (uma cena!). De volta em casa, ela pegou uma das bonecas (a única disponível no momento, aliás) e ficou passeando com ela de carrinho pela casa. Ela, muito carinhosamente, cobriu a boneca com um babador e colocou alguns brinquedos para ela no carrinho. E quando chegou a hora do soninho da Marta ela espontâneamente a colocou no bercinho de boneca. Muito fofo de se ver. Eu então peguntei a Marta se a boneca não ia ficar com frio no berço, e chegamos a conclusão de que a boneca precisa de um cobertor e um travesseiro também. Então ontem a noite eu me encontrei projetando um quilt para a bonequinha e curtindo muito o processo!

I managed to finish the second child’s seat coverfor Marta and Liliana’s bedroom. This project is now complete. Wehey!!! I thought it would take me much longer to collect left overs to make a new cover, but hey! They keep coming.

Eu consegui acabar a segunda capa para as cadeirasdo quarto da Marta e da Liliana. Agora sse projeto está completo, uhuuuu! Eu achei que ia demorar muito mais até eu conseguir sobras de fios para fazer a nova capa, mas eles foram aparecendo…

My other knitting goal for 2010 is to make a pair of mittens for myself. I had never tuned into them until around September/October last year when they starting popping all over Ravelry. There are so many beautiful designs it will be hard to choose from: playful, stylish, folkloric, modern, traditional. Here are some of my favourite ones:

Minha outra meta no tricô para 2010 é fazer um par de luvas de inverno para mim. Eu nunca tinha prestado muita atenção nelas até setembro ou outubro do ano passado quando elas começaram a pipocar pelo Ravelry. É cada uma mais linda que a outra que vai ser até difícil de escolher. Divertidas, cheia de estilo, tradicionais, modernas, folclóricas… aqui vão algumas das minhas favoritas.

Since we’ve taken down the Christmas decorations in early January I’ve been slowly building up our Winter nature table. The beautiful Snow Queen and her baby, given to us by Anna, have now a companion. Though of a different style he is still a King Winter. He is actually a match for the Snow Queen I made for the Seasons Round Exchange. I started them at the same time but only now I was able to finish King Winter. The snow flakes and snow fairy hanging from the branch were produced at the parent and tot sessions I take Marta and Liliana to at the Toronto Waldorf School. We have now exactly one month to enjoy our nature table until we land in the middle of the (very hot) Brazilian Summer!

Desde que guardamos as decorações de Natal no início de janeiro, eu tenho aos poucos montado a nosa mesa da natureza de inverno. A bela Rainha da Neve, que nos foi dada pela Anna, agora ganhou um companheiro. De estilo diferente, mas ainda assim um Rei Inverno. Ele é na verdade o par da Rainha da Neve que eu fiz para o Seasons Round Exchange. Eu comecei a fazer os dois ao mesmo tempo, mas só agora consegui terminá-lo. Os flocos de neve e a Fada da Neve que estão pendurados no galho foram produzidos durante o grupo de recreação ao qual eu levo a Marta e a Liliana na Toronto Waldorf School. Agora nós temos exatamente um mês para curtir a nossa mesa da natureza, até nós aterrizarmos no meio do verão brasileiro!
