And why is he connected with romantic love? You can see that Valentine’s day is not much in my culture as it is not celebrated in Brazil. Nor it is a big deal in (modern) England either though you see a lot of commercial stuff around it there. But here in Canada, as in the U.S. it seems to be  a more significant holiday. People exchange cards, candies, flowers, stuffed animals and it is not only between sweethearts but between friends and  family too. So the crafts at the parent and tot session this past Thursday was this very cute string of hearts that has a special place in our nature table this weekend. Happy Valentine’s day to you! Meanwhile, I’ll do a little bit of research on this Saint…

Quem é São Valemtim? E por quê ele é associado ao amor romântico? Como você pode ver,  o dia de São Valentim não faz parte da minha cultura uma vez que esse feriado não é celebrado no Brasil. Na Inglaterra também não é tão importante mas você encontra muita coisa comercial no tema. Mas aqui no Canadá, como nos Estados Unidos, o dia de São Valentin é levado bem a sério. As pessoas decoram as casas, trocam cartões, flores, balas, bichos de pelúcia e não é só entre namorados, mas amigos e familiares também. Então, o trabalho manual no grupo de recreação nessa última quinta feira foi esse enfeite fofo de corações. Ele foi colocado num lugar de horna na nossa mesa da natureza durante esse fim de semana.  Feliz dia de São Valentim para você! Enquanto isso eu vou continuar minha pesquisa sobre esse Santo…

Saturday morning we headed out to our favourite park in the area to enjoy the fun the Winter has to offer. The lake is now completely frozen and is a huge outdoors skating rink. Amazingly beautiful. We were so excited about it that last week we all got ice skates for ourselves. Even Marta got one. It was, in fact, our birthday present to her. Hers is a more primitive version of an ice skate, with two blades in each foot that you strap on to the snow boot. Great for small children. Sadly, I wasn’t able to get a picture of her in action though she enjoyed being pulled and gliding on the ice thoroughly. So much so that she now says she wants to be an ice hockey player and runs around the house hitting a pom pom ball with a wooden stick. Imagine that!?!

Sábado de manhã nós fomos ao nosso parque favorito aproveitar uma das diversões que o inverno oferece. Agora o lago está completamente congelado e virou um imenso rinque de patinação ao ar livre. Lindo de tirar o fôlego. A gente ficou tão animado que semana passada compramos patins de gelo para todos nós. Até a Marta ganhou um, que foi na verdade, o seu presente de aniversário. O patins dela é uma versão mais primitiva, com duas lâminas em cada pé e que você prente na bota de neve, e é ótimo para crianças pequenas. Infelizmente eu não consegui tirar uma foto dela em ação apesar de ter adorado ser puxada e deslizar no gelo. Tanto que agora ela diz que quer ser jogadora de hóquei de gelo e corre pela casa batendo num pom-pom com um pedaço de madeira. Já imaginou!?!

Marta and Liliana had their first play on the snow this morning while Warren and I were clearing the driveway. We will most definetely look for a house with a short driveway when it’s the right time to buy! Marta loved to make tracks on the fresh snow but Liliana couldn’t get her balance quite right with all the snow gear.

Marta e Liliana bricaram na neve pela primeira vez enquanto eu e o Warren limpávamos a neve da porta da casa e da garagem. Na hora que a gente for comprar uma casa a gente vai, com certeza,  procurar por uma com a mínima distância possível entre a garagem e a rua! A Marta adorou fazer pegadas na neve recém caída mas a Liliana não conseguiu se equilibrar direito com toda a roupa e botas de neve.

Apparently this has been quite an unusual November in Toronto as far as the weather goes. The temperature has been steady around 10 degrees C for most of this month while at the same time last year it was already 0 C.  No complaints from me!

As fadas da neve andaram praticando hoje pela manhã!

Aparentemente esse novembro tem sido uma surpresa no que diz respeito ao clima. A temperatura tem estado em torno dos 10 graus Centígrados por quase todo o mês. Ano passado, nessa mesma época do ano a temperatura já estava por volta dos 0 graus. Eu estou achando ótimo!!!

Yesterday we went back to Eaton Hall, the park we took my mum to in late September in a failed attempt to see the leaves turning colour. This time we missed the red phase of the Maple trees but to be immersed in a forest of golden yellow trees was just amazing. You just don’t get that in Brazil, nor in England.

Ontem nós retornamos ao parque Eaton Hall, onde levamos a mamãe no final de setembro numa tentativa frustrada de ver as folhas das árvores mudando de cor. Dessa vez nós perdemos a fase vermelha das folhas do Maple, mas estar imerso numa floresta de amarelo dourado foi simplesmente incrível. A gente não vê isso no Brasil, nem na Inglaterra.

Canada, like the United Stated, also celebrates Thanksgiving. Only here it is on the second Monday of October as opposed to the fourth Thursday of November as in the US.  The roots of the Thanksgiving holiday are set in the Harvest Festivals shared by many cultures around the globe to give thanks when the harvest season comes to the end. In present day Canada it is about being grateful for what we have and for the bounty of the previous year. Family and friends usually get together to share a Thanksgiving meal. And guess what? Yes, we’ve already made a few friends here and were invited to a Thanksgiving celebration yesterday. We spent a good chunk of the day in the kitchen preparing our contributions to the feast. Warren’s especial creation is called “almond and cranberry curried rice” and I made some chocolate chip cookies from a recipe that I’ve been wanting to try out for a long long time. The mood of the party was lovely. The house was decorated with pumpkins, squashes, corn dollies and sheaves of wheat. The table was beautifully adorned with autumn leaves and candles. And the food, hmmmm, just delicious.  Apart from Warren’s yummy curried rice there was the traditional turkey with gravy and stuffing, roasted vegetables and cranberry sauce.  So, after a joyful evening in the company of new and very welcoming friends and generous sharing, what else could we be feeling if not thankful? Happy thanksgiving to everyone.

Aqui no Canadá, como nos Estados Unidos, também se celebra o dia de Ação de Graças. Só que aqui é em outubro, e não em novembro como nos EUA. A origem desse feriado vem dos Festivais da Colheita, que eram rituais celebrados em muitas culturas ao redor do mundo em que se dava graças ao final do período da colheita. Hoje o dia de Ação de Graças é um dia onde se mostra gratidão por aquilo que se tem e pelos frutos do ano anterior. É um dia em que famílias e amigos se reúnem para compartilhar uma ceia. E adivinha o que? Sim, nós já temos alguns amigos por aqui e fomos convidados para um jantar de Ação de Graças ontem! Nós passamos boa parte do dia na cozinha preparando a nossa contribuição para a ceia. O Warren criou um prato chamado “arroz com amêndoas e cranberries ao curry” e eu fiz uns cookies de chocolate de uma receita que eu queria tentar já há muito tempo. A casa da nossa amiga estava toda decorada com diversos tipos de abóboras, bonecos feitos de palha de milho e feixos de trigo – símbolos típicos da colheita. Sobre a mesa havia velas e várias folhas de outono como adorno. E a comida, hmmmm, estava deliciosa. Além do curry delicioso que o Warren fez, teve também o tradicional peru recheado, vegetais da estação assados e molho de cranberries. Pois então, depois de uma noite alegre na companhia de novos amigos, com muita abundância o que mais poderíamos estar sentindo senão gratidão? Feliz dia de Ação de Graças para todos.

We wanted to take my mum to see the leaves turning colours before she goes back to Brazil. After all, this is the highlight of the Canadian autumn. We took her to Eaton Hall,  a park that was recommended by a friend as a good place for enjoying this spectacle from Nature.  But alas, it is still a bit early. Most of the trees are still holding on to their green leaves and only a very few started to turn red. Apparently the leaves turn colours and fall very quickly, in something like two weeks, and the peak in this part of the country is around the second week of October. Eaton Hall is a great place, nonetheless. With a beautiful lake and trails that go into the woods we pretty much enjoyed our trip and will be back again in October. As for my mum, we’re sorry that this time she’ll have to enjoy it via the pictures we’ll take… but we tried!

Nós queríamos levar a minha mãe para ver folhas mudando de cor antes de ela voltar para o Brasil. Afinal, esse é o climax do outono canadense. Nós a levamos ao Eaton Hall, um parque que foi recomendado por um amigo como um bom lugar para se experienciar esse espetáculo da natureza. Mas infelizmente ainda está cedo e a maioria das árvores ainda está com suas folhas verdes. Muito poucas folhas já começaram a ficar vermelhas. Parece que as follhas mudam de cor e caem muito rapidamente, tipo duas semanas, e o pico nessa parte do país é por volta da segunda semana de outubro. Eaton Hall é um lugar muito bonito que tem um belo lago e trilhas que passam por dentro da floresta.  A gente curtiu muito o passeio e com certeza voltaremos lá em meados de outubro. Mamãe, no entanto, vai ter que curtir as fotos que vamos tirar dessa vez… mas a gente tentou!

Today we greet the Autumn and t is with a lot of anticipation that I look forward to the most beautiful season in Canada. But today is also time to say good bye to the Summer and its relaxed days in light clothing and sandals. Although this was an unusually cool Summer, according to the Torontonians, we enjoyed it very much. It certainly gave us more sunny days in a row than any of the nine Summers we spent in England! Apart from a couple of short trips we spent most of the Summer here at home, and because I just can’t get over how lucky we are to have landed in a house with such a great garden I put together a few pictures that sum up all the treats and fun it offered us. As we might not be in this house anymore by June next year this is also a tribute to this lovely space.

Hoje nós damos as boas-vindas ao outono, e é com grante expectativa que eu aguardo o desenrolar da estação mais bonita do Canadá. Mas hoje também damos adeus ao verão e ao seu ar relaxado, as roupas leves e as sandálias abertas. Segundo os torontanos, esse foi um verãobem fresco e fora do comum, mas mesmo assim nós o aproveitamos bastante. Com certeza  tivemos mais dias de sol seguidos aqui do que em nove verões que passamos na Inglaterra! Tirando as duas curtas viagens que fizemos a gente passou a maior parte do verão aqui em casa. Por isso fiz uma seleção de fotos que resumem as delícias e as surpresas do nosso jardim. É possível também que não estejamos mais nessa casa por volta de junho do ano que vem, então fica aqui também um tributo a esse espaço incrível.

We’ve been meaning to visit Niagara Falls since we first came to Toronto for Warren’s job interview year and a half ago.  Yesterday we took the opportunity that my mum is here, put on our tourist hats and headed down to finally visit the famous waterfall. I was taken by surprise at how big the town of Niagara is. For some reason I thought it would be more of a village (I keep forgetting we’re in North America!) so I had to adjust the sight of high rises, which are mostly hotels, with my bucolic imagination. Once past this stage I actually enjoyed how they managed to integrate this striking  feature of Nature with the urban surroundings.  The waterfall is just beautiful. I so love watching nature and its magnificence and  I was only sorry I couldn’t contemplate it for longer.

Já tem um tempão que estávamos querendo visitar as cataratas do Niagara, desde que a gente veio a Toronto pela primeira vez há um ano e meio atrás para a entrevista de trabalho do Warren. Ontem nós aproveitamos a oportunidade que a minha mãe está aqui, colocamos nossos disfarces de turistas e lá fomos nós visitar a famosa cachoeira. Me pegou de surpresa o fato de Niagara ser uma cidade relativamente grande. Por alguma razão eu achava que seria mais tipo um vilarejo (eu vivo esquecendo que estamos na América do Norte!) , então eu tive que ajustar a visão dos  arranha céus, que são hotéis em sua maioria, com a minha imaginação bucólica. Uma vez passada essa etapa, eu até achei muito interessante como eles conseguiram integrar esse acidente natural com os seu arredor urbano. As cataratas são simplesmente lindas. Eu adora observar a natureza e sua magnitude e só fiquei com pena de não ter tido mais tempo para comtemplá-la.

Today we ventured into the big city to congregate with fellow Brazilians and help celebrate the “7th of September” which is Brazil’s independence day. After quickly debating how good an idea it was to take small children to a rather big crowd we grabbed our little ones and headed south on the subway. I, in particular, wanted to get an extra dose of Brazilian “batucada” (drumbeat) in my blood and having Elba Ramalho and Carlinhos Brown as the main attractions that seemed to be the right event to go to. Apparently this is the first time that Toronto holds this party. In NYC it is already a 25 year tradition on the 46th street where the event brings together something like 1.5 million people! We didn’t stay until the very end but thoroughly enjoyed the vibrant Brazilian mood. We even bumped into friends which made the whole trip down to Toronto even more especial.

Hoje nos aventuramos a cidade grande para celebrar o 7 de setembro com os compatriotas residentes em Toronto. Depois de um rápido debate se seria uma boa idéia levarmos crianças pequenas a um evento tão grande pegamos o metro na direção sul com as nossas duas pequenas. Eu, em particular, estava precisando de uma boa dose de batucada brasileira, e tendo Elba Ramalho e Carlinhos Brown como atrações principais esse me pareceu o evento certo para ir. Aparentemente essa é a primeira vez que esse festival acontece em Toronto. Em Nova Iorque já é uma tradição de 25 anos e junta uma multidão de 1.5 milhões de pessoas! Nós não ficamos até o fim mas aproveitamos cada minuto da atmosfera vibrante desse pouquinho de Brasil. A gente até encontrou com amigos por acaso, o que fez a viagem ainda mais especial.
