Our camping trip was amazing. Seven days and no rain whatsoever! In fact, there were forecasts for thunder showers during our week there and we heard thunders indeed, but the storms managed to miss us somehow. So lucky.

We were at a group site with other five lovely families, though not all at the same time. But there were always other children for the girls to play and friends to share a meal with. What a treat. The beach is definitely the highlight of the park. Lake Huron being so big I was often surprised that the water wasn’t salty as in the ocean! One can easily forget it is a lake. We closed our Summer holidays with a golden key but it feels so good to be back at home! We now look forward to going back to the Pinery next year. Who wants to join us?

A nosso acampamento foi incrível. Sete dias sem nenhuma chuva! A previsão do tempo antecipou temporais com raios e trovoadas, e a gente com certeza escutou os trovões, mas a chuva passou longe. Que sorte.

Nós ficamos numa área de acampamento em grupo com outras cinco famílias, apesar de que  não todas ao mesmo tempo. Mas sempre tinha crianças para brincarem com as meninas e amigos para compartilhar as refeições. Muito especial. A praia é, com certeza, o ponto alto do parque. O lago Huron é tão grande que várias vezes me surpreendi notando que a água não é salgada como a do mar! Fechamos as férias de verão com chave de ouro e é bom estar de volta em casa. Com certeza voltaremos no averão que vem. Quem quer se juntar a nós?

This is our last adventure of the Summer. We are heading to the Pinery Provincial Park for one week of camping. I’ll see you when we are back. Wish us good weather! …and have a good week you too.

Essa é a nossa última aventura do verão. Nós estamos de saída para acampar no Pinery Provincial Park por uma semana. A gente se vê quando estivermos de volta. Deseje-nos bom tempo! … e uma boa semana para você também.

On Sunday we celebrated Warren’s birthday with a few friends here at our house. The original plan was a garden party where we would roast potatoes and do bread on a stick in the fire pit with the children amongst other food yumminess. We didn’t count however, with the downpour that happened the day before and left our garden all soggy and muddy. So our plans quickly changed to indoors. The fun factor wasn’t affected at all and we had a delightful time. The highlight of the party being the communal ice cream making where everyone worked for their share by turning the crank, adults and children alike. We have been in Canada for just a little over a year now and I’m ever so grateful for the lovely friends we made.

No domingo nós celebramos o aniversário do Warren com amigos aqui em casa. O plano original era fazer a festa no jardim, assar batatas e fazer pão no palito na fogueira com as crianças entre outras delícias, claro. O que a gente não contava era com o temporal que caiu no dia anterior e deixou o jardim todo enlameado. Então os nossos planos rapidamente se voltaram para dentro de casa. O fator diversão não foi nem um pouco afetado e a festa foi ótima. O ponto alto sendo o sorvete comunitário, onde todo mundo participou da confeção ajudando a girar a manivela da sorveteira. Adultos e crianças! Nós estamos no Canadá há um pouco mais de um ano e sou muito grata por já termos feito ótimos amigos.

Today is a holiday here in Canada. We didn’t have any special plans for the long weekend mainly because I, as a stay at home mum of two children under school age (and new to the country), was completely unaware of it. That doesn’t mean that it wasn’t a good one though. The garden is still the focus of our attention these days. We dug a second bed and planted lettuce, basil, chives, carrots, beets, tomatoes, potatoes and sunflowers. At the garden centre I couldn’t resist and also got a lavender plant. I love their scent. Their excitement didn’t wear off and both Marta and Liliana loved to help with placing the seeds in their holes and covering them with soil. Every morning after breakfast we have been stepping out to say good morning to the plants and cheer them to grow beautiful and healthy. Marta takes this task very seriously. This weekend I also made  huge progress with Warren’s birthday present and managed to trace and cut all the pieces of the pattern for two shirts. Lastly, Marta and Liliana were given a brand new tricycle as a hand-me-down from a friend so there was also a lot or riding the new toy this holiday. I hope you had a good one too!

Hoje foi feriado aqui no Canadá. Não planejamos nada de especial principalmente porque eu, que não estou trabalhando e com duas crianças abaixo da idade escolar, nem me dei conta. O que nçao quer dizer que não tenha sido um bom fim de semana prolongado. A nossa horta continua sendo o centro das nossas atenções esses dias. A gente preparou um segundo canteiro e plantamos alface, manjericão, cebolinha, cenoura, beterraba, tomate, batata e girassóis. Enquanto na loja de plantas eu não resiti e comprei também uma lavanda. Eu amo o cheiro. A animação com o jardim ainda não terminou e a Marta e aLiliana adoraram ajudar colocando as sementes nos buracos e cobrindo-as de terra. De manhã, depois do café da manhã damos um pulinho lá fora para dar bom dia para as plantas e desejar que elas cresçam bonitas e saudáveis. Marta leva essa tarefa muito a sério. Nesse fim de semana eu também fiz ótimo progresso com o presente de aniversário do Warren e consegui traçar e cortar todos os pedaços do molde para duas camisas. E por último, Marta and Liliana ganharam um triciclo novinho de segunda mão e nosso feriado incluiu muitos passeios com pedaladas. Espero que seu fim de semana também tenha sido ótimo!

For the past three weeks we lived with a raccoon above our heads. This one mama Raccoon found her way into the space between the roof and the ceiling above our kitchen, navigated all the way to the side of the house and found a lovely spot inside the wall to have her babies. This wall happened to be in Marta and Liliana’s room and we could hear the babies squealing and scratching the walls. Pretty creepy. It took our landlord more than two weeks to do something about it from the time we let him know of the problem. So last Monday the animal control service finally came for the removal of our intrepid guests. They cut the dry wall open and removed the two babies. They then placed them on the roof to attract the mother out of the house and put one way doors on the holes so they couldn’t get back in. In the beginning of the evening we actually saw mama raccoon come back for her offsprings but she was very confused as to where to go and how to carry her two babies. It was actually heartbreaking to watch her coming back and forth with one of the babies in her moth and having to leave the other behind. As we all watched them Marta got very distressed by the whole drama and couldn’t stop asking why the mama had left one baby behind and whether she was going to come back for it.  The next morning Warren checked the front and back yards for dead raccoon babies so to avoid a bigger trauma for Marta but there was no sign of them. We told Marta that they found a new home and mama raccoon is taking good care of her babies. But just last night we heard them back in our house… Bold little animals these racoons are!

Há três semanas que vínhamos morando com um guaxinim sobre as nossas cabeças. Uma mamãe guaxinim entrou no espaço entre o telhado e o teto acima da cozinha, navegou até a lateral da casa e achou um belo espaço na parede para ter os seus filhotes. Essa parede fica no quarto da Marta e da Liliana e podíamos ouvir os bichinhos arranhando a parede. Um horror! Demorou mais de duas semanas para o nosso senhorio tomar uma atitude desde que a gente o avisou do problema e só na seunda-feira passada o serviço de controle de animais veio para a remoção dos guaxinins. Eles tiveram que cortar a parede do quarto para retirar dois bebês. Eles então os colocaram no telhado para atrair a mãe para fora da casa e colocaram uma portinhola que não deixa ela entrar de volta. No início da noite nós vimos a mamãe guaxinim que veio pegar a sua cria, mas ela estava claramente confusa e sem saber para onde ir ou como carregar seus doid filhotes. Deu dor no coração de ve-la indo para lá e para cá com um dos filhotes na boca e tendo que deixar o outro para trás. Enquanto assistíamos a esse drama a Marta ficou muito procupada e não parava de perguntar porque a mamãe tinha deixado um dos filhotes e se ela voltaria para pegá-lo. Na manhã seguinte o Warren deu uma geral no quintal procurando por filhotes mortos para evitar um trauma ainda maior para a Marta, mas não encontrou nada. Nós falamos para a Marta que os guaxinins estão numa casa nova e a mamãe está cuidando dos bebês. Mas ontem a noite nós os ouvimos de volta na nossa casa… Que bichinhos mais corajosos esses guaxinins!

One of the many reasons we love to have visitors is because they give us the extra incentive to visit different places and get to know the area we live a bit better. While Wendy was here we took the opportunity to go to the Royal Botanical Gardens, about an hour drive from Toronto.  It was a cold, windy and rainy day but that didn’t stop us admiring the beauty and the mystery of Nature and its Seasons. It is so magical to observe buds opening up, a shoot breaking the ground towards the light and the birds tweeting away. How does it all happen? I know, science explains it all. But does it really? Is there just one truth? Well I pretty much like this other idea that many ancient folk shared.  The idea that  elemental beings dedicate their existence to the task of providing us, Human Beings,  not only with a home but also with beauty that replenishes and nourishes our souls. We’re not here alone, so let’s respect their hard work and take good care of this place, shall we? Thank you gnomes, udines, sylphs and salamanders et cia.

Uma das razões pelas quais a gente adora visitas é que nos dá um incentivo extra para visitar lugares novos e conehecer melhor essa região onde estamos morando. Enquanto a Wendy estava aqui nós aproveitamos para conhecer o Royal Botanical Gardens, há uma hora de carro de Toronto. O dia estava frio, com chuva e muito vento mas nem isso nos impediu de admirar a beleza e o mistério da Natureza. É realmente mágico observar um botão de flor se abrindo ou um broto empurrando o solo a procura da luz e os passarinhos cantando. Como é que tudo isso acontece? Eu sei, a ciência explica tudo. Mas será que explica mesmo? Só há uma verdade? Pois eu bem de uma idéia que muitos povos antigos tinham em comum. A idéia de que seres elementais dedicam a sua existência para prover a nós, Seres Humanos, não apenas com uma morada mas também com a beleza que nutre e restaura as nossas almas. Nós não estamos aqui sozinhos, então vamos respeitar o trabalho duro dos elementais e cuidar bem desse lugar, não é? Obrigada gnomos, ondinas, sílfides e salamandras e cia.

While my mum was here we took the opportunity to go to Toronto a couple of times. Right by Lake Ontario we bumped into this funny advertising for an AM radio station.  I’m not sure if this policy ever existed but it made for a clever ad. With two little ones it doesn’t even cross my mind to take any knitting with me on the plane, anyway!

Enquanto minha mãe estava aqui a gente aproveitou para ir badalar na cidade algumas vezes. Bem perto do lago Ontário a gente esbarrou com esse anúncio bem engraçado de uma estação de rádio local. O anúncio diz: “É permitido levar agulhas de tricô no avião [se que acompanhadas do fio] – entenda o que não faz sentido”. Eu não sei se algum dia essa regra foi verdadeira, mas rendeu um anúncio bem esperto, apesar de que traduzido para o português perde um pouco da graça. De qualquer forma, com duas crianças pequenas nem me passa pela cabeça levar tricô para fazer no avião!

Today we spent the afternoon playing outside and observed the gifts the Spring has brought to our garden so far.  A strong shoot lifted an empty nutshell from the ground. The forsythia is in full bloom. Little purple flowers have opened up and are rejoicing in the sun and wind. The Lily of the Valley are starting to unfurling its leaves and we just can’t wait for its delicious scent to greet us. New leaves are opening up on our wild raspberry bushes and making us dream of the Summer harvest already. Hurray for Spring!

Hoje nós passamos a tarde brincando no jardim e observamos algumas surpresas trazidas pela primavera. Uma casca de nós foi levantada do chão por um broto muito forte. Pequenas flores roxas desabrocharam e estão felizes a brincar no sol e no vento. A árvore amarela está toda florida. O lírio do vale está comeãndo a desenrolar suas folhas e malpodemos esperar plea sua deliciosa essência. Novas folhas estão surgindo nos arbustos de framboesas selvagem en jáfazendo sonhar com a colheita de verão. Viva a Primavera.

We’ve come back to a surprisingly warm Toronto. I was expecting a much colder weather, even snow this time of the year but suddenly the temperature is up around 20 degrees Celsius. How wonderful is that? Yep, it is still cool compared to the 36+ degrees in Rio but nonetheless it is a treat.  We took full advantage of this gift from nature and had a family day out at the Toronto Islands on lake Ontario. We had a great time playing on the beach and the amount of clothes that the girls were wearing didn’t seem to get in the way of the fun they were having. We also saw our first Crocuses and that really felt like Spring is here to stay. Or at least I hope.  It was warm enough even for ice cream. Yummy!

A gente retornou para uma Toronto surpreendentemente quente. Eu estava esperando que a temperatura estivesse bem mais baixa, ou até nevando nessa época do ano, mas de repente está por volta dos 20 graus. Que maravilha! Sim, ainda é friozinho comparado aos 36+ do Rio mas ainda assim está mais que bom. A gente aproveitou esse presente da natureza e fomos passar o dia nas Ilhas de Toronto no lago Ontário. Nos divertimos muito brincando na areia e a quantidade de roupas que as meninas estavam usando não pareceu atrapalhar a brincadeira nenhum pouquinho. A gente também viu os primeiros crocos (ou açafrão) e eles me fizeram sentir que a primevera está aqui para ficar. Ou pelo menos assim espero. E também estava quente o suficiente para tomar até sorvete. Delícia!
