I try to plan my Christmas presents in advance as much as I can, specially because I like to make them. But as the date approaches there are always people I’d like to give a little something that I haven’t necessarily planned for. Enter the Christmas cookies! They are not a tradition in Brazil, so they don’t come naturally to me as an idea for gift but they are big in North America and I’m most certainly borrowing the tradition. Liliana and I (and Marta joined us after school) spent the whole day on Monday baking cookies and decorating them. But it couldn’t be just the cookies, could it? A big part of the of the gift is presenting them in a hand made origami box, of course. This box is so easy to make that it is the perfect last minute touch to the whole last minute gift idea. I’ve had the instructions for ages in a book called “Paper Creations” by Gay Merril Gross but here is an excellent online tutorial if you’d like to try your hand at it. For the paper I used sheets from a Christmas themed scrap-booking pad. Each 12 x 12 in sheet makes a 4 1/4 x 4 1/4 in box 2 1/4 in deep. Just perfect for five or six big cookies or more of the smaller ones. For a complete box (bottom and lid) you need two sheets of paper. The cookies turned out delicious and if you’re interested here’s the recipe I used: Ideal Sugar Cookie by Martha Stewart. Here for the royal icing, also from Martha Stewart. Now, my only frustration is that I couldn’t get the icing to be red no matter how much food colouring I added. It turned out bright pink to my dismay but to the girls’ delight! Next year…

Eu tento planejar com certa antecedência os meus presentes de Natal especialmente porque eu gosto de fazê-los. Mas vai chegando perto do Natal vão aparecendo várias pessoas para quem eu gostaria de dar um presente mas não tenho tempo de fazer um especial. Entram aí os biscoitos de Natal! Eles não são comuns no Brasil e por isso nunca me ocorreu fazer biscoitos como presente de Natal, mas aqui na América do Norte eles são muito populares e eu certamente estou pegando a tradição emprestada. Eu e Liliana (Marta se juntou a nós depois da escola) passamos a segunda feira inteira fazendo biscoitos e decorand-os. Mas… não poderia ser apenas os biscoitos, né? Uma grande parte do presente é apresentá-lo numa caixinha de origami feita a mão, claro. A caixa é tão fácil de fazer que é o toque perfeito no presente de última hora. Eu tenho as instruções há milênios em um livro chamado “Paper Creations” by Gay Merril Gross mas aqui vai o link para um passo-a-passo execelente se você quiser tentar fazer a sua caixinha. O papel que eu usei foi de um bloco de scrap-booking com tema natalino. Cada folha mede 35 x 35 cm e faz uma caixa  de 10,8 x 10,8 cm com 5.5 cm de profundidade. Perfeita para cinco ou seis biscoitos grandes ou mais dos menores. Para uma caixa completa (parte de baixo e tampa) você precisa de duas folhas de papel. Os biscoitos ficaram deliciosos e se você estiver interessada a receita que usei foi a Ideal Sugar Cookie por Martha Stewart. Aqui para a glace usada para a decoração. Agora, a minha única frustração foi não ter conseguido fazer a glace ficar vermelha. Coloquei o máximo de corante vermelho possível e ela ficou rosa-choque para minha decepção e delírio das meninas! “Paper Creations” by Gay Merril Gross

I have so much on my plate lately that I didn’t have much time for paper folding this year. But that’s not to say I haven’t done any. Only I opted for simple models, specially the ones that are done with just one sheet of paper. I particularly like the three dimensional five pointed star that’s made from a pentagon. I wish I had the link to online instructions to share with you but I couldn’t find any. Carol, from Extreme Cards and Papercrafting, just pointed me to this very comprehensive tutorial for the 3D star. Thanks Carol! And here is a good tutorial for the flat one if you’re interested. I also made one 30 piece sonobe just because I love it with all it’s 30 different papers. And of course I made a few stars made out of 6 pieces of paper not only because they’re quick to make but because they are also very beautiful. They all went to the fundraiser at Warren’s work and only a few came back. Success!

Tem tanta coisa acontecendo por aqui que eu nem tive muito tempo para fazer origami esse ano. Mas isso não quer dizer que eu não tenha feito nenhum. Eu simplesmente optei por modelos mais simples  em especial os que utilizam uma ´so folha de papel. O meu predileto é a estrela tidimensional de cinco pontas feita a partir de um pentágono. Eu adoraria te oferecer um link para as instruções online, mas não achei nenhum. A Carol, do Extreme Cards and Papercrafting, acabou de me direcionar para esse ótimo passo-a-passo da estrela 3D. Obrigada, Carol!  E aqui vai o tutorial da estrela chata se te interessar. Eu també, fiz um sonobe de 30 folhas de papel só porque eu amo com todas as 30 cores diferentes uma das outras. E claro, eu fiz também algumas das estrelas feitas com seis pedaços de papel porue além de rápidas são lindas. Todas fizeram parte da arrecadação de fundos do trabalho do Warren e pouquíssimas retornaram. Sucesso!

I just finished this vest for Marta. All children in the kindergarten will have  a similar one to wear in the classroom during the Winter months. A few weeks ago the teacher instructed us parents on how to felt a wool sweater and take it back to the class  so she could cut the vest to the child’s size. The vest then returned home for the parent to add some sort of embellishment. It could be as simple as a blanket stitch around the edges or a appliques and borders.  It was also an important part of the process that the child would see you working on her vest. Marta was very excited to see hers taking shape and tomorrow she’ll take it back to her class to keep her cosy inside as the temperatures drop outdoors. Isn’t that a wonderful project to have handmade vests made by their parents and teacher for each child in the classroom? So special. I love it!

Eu acabei de terminar esse colete para a Marta. Todas as crianças do jardim da infância terão uma parecida para usar dentro da sala de aula durante os meses do inverno. Há algumas semanas atrás a professora instruiu os pais como encolher um casaco de lã (feltrar) e depois trazê-lo para escola para que ela cortasse o colete no tamanh da criança. O colete então retornou a casa para que o pai ou mãe adicionasse alguma decoração. Podia ser uma simples borda, ou um bolso, ou motivos. Uma parte importante do processo era que a criança visse o pai ou mãe trabalhando no seu colete. Marta ficava sempre animada ao ver seu colete tomar forma e amanhã ela irá levar o dela de volta para a escola para mantê-la quentinha dentro da sala enquanto a temperatura só cai lá fora. Não é um projeto incrível que cada criança tenha um colete feito a mão pelos próprios pais na sala de aula? Super especial!

The past weekend was a busy one. Lots of events take place at this time of the year, fairs, parties or just friends getting together. On Saturday Marta had her kindergarten Advent Spiral and on Sunday, the first Sunday of Advent, we had a lovely celebration at a friend’s place. Amongst all the events we managed to get our house in the mood to welcome the new Season. Our nature table is now hosting the stable and the animals that are calmly waiting for Joseph, Mary and the Donkey to arrive for the birth of baby Jesus. They have already started their journey and are on their way from across the living room. As of today the branches of our nature table tree host three stars and more are coming as the Advent progresses. This year we decided to have a Christmas tree because Marta and Liliana insisted on it, only it is not a real one. Warren and I are a bit sensitive to Christmas tree farming, but also we go away half way through the season meaning that we won’t enjoy it for long. Maybe next year we’ll have a real one. The fact that the tree is not real didn’t diminish Marta and Liliana’s excitement one bit. They were eager helpers in decorating it. Marta wanted to put a string of popcorn on it (as she had seen at a friend’s place) and got busy with it. All the decorations are made of paper. Yes, I’ve been folding again and soon will show you what I have prepared for this year Advent Fair Fundraiser at Warren’s work. This is a jolly Season, we love it!

O fim de semana passado foi super cheio. Essa éopca do ano é cheia de eventos, festas ou apenas amigos querendo estar juntos. Sábado Marta teve a celebração do Advento na escola, onde cada criança acende uma vela após caminhar numa espiral feita de galhos de pinheiros. No Domingo, o primeiro do Advento, nós fomos a uma festa deliciosa na casa de amigos. No meio de todos esses acontecimentos nós ainda achamos tempo para colocar a nossa casa no espírito natalino. A nossa mesa da natureza agora abriga o estábulo e os animais que esperam calmamente pela chagada de Maria, José e o burrinho para o nascimento do menino Jesus. Eles já partiram e estão a caminho do outro lado da sala. Hoje os galhos da nossa árvore da naturza abrigam três estrelinhas, e mais estão a cominho até o dia de Natal. Esse ano nós resolvemos colocar uma árvore de Natal porque Marta e Liliana insistiram, mas essa não é de verdade. Warren e eu somos sensíveis as fazendas de arvore de natal, mas também viajaremos no meio da estação, e não poderemos curtir tanto. Talvez ano que vem tenhamos uma árvore de verdade. Mas o fato da árvore ser artificial não diminiu em nada a excitação das meninas. As duas ajudaram com a decoração e a Marta quis colocar um cordão de pipocas que ela viu na casa de uma amiga. Todos os enfeites são feitos de papel. Sim, estou fazendo origami de novo e logo mostrarei a minha produção para a feira de arrecadação de fundos do trabalho do Warren. Essa época do ano é uma alegria, adoramos!

The Candlelight Fair at the Waldorf School last Saturday was a huge success! Amongst the many activities available for all ages there was the Children’s Corner which is organised and ran by the Kindergarten parents. Children’s Corner is a magical space where only children (ages 3 to 4th grade) are allowed in and can choose up to three hand crafted items in exchange for the fair tokens. The crafts are all made by parents, mostly mums, throughout the year. There were about 1500 little crafts! We meet every Wednesday morning and have lots of fun making the lovely little treasures for the children in our community and their friends. On the Friday before the fair a group of more or less ten parents transformed one of the kindergarten rooms into this magic space. It was hard work but worth every minute of it when you see the little people coming out of the room proudly showing their treasures to their parents and friends. Priceless!

The room is darkened so the fairy lights can make it magical, but it makes t harder for good photography. So apologies for the yellowish tone my camera produces when in low light. I tried to correct it in Photoshop but wasn’t so happy with it either.

A feira da escola, no sábado passado, foi um sucesso! Entre as muitas atividades oferecidas para todas a idades tinha 0 Children’s Corner (Cantinho das Crianças) o qual é organizado pleos pais das crianças do Jardim da Infância. Children’s Corner é um espaço mágico onde só os pequenos  (de 3 anos até a 4a série primária) podem entrar e escolher até três ítens para levar para casa. Todos os itens são feitos pelos pais, principalmente mães, durante o ano. Tinham mais de 1500 peças!!! O grupo se encontra toda quarta feira pela manhã e se diverte um bocado criando esses adoráveis tesouros para as crianças da escola e seus amigos. Na sexta feira véspera da feira um grupo de mais ou menos dez pais transformaram uma das salas do jardim da infância nesse espaço mágico. Deu trabalho, mas valeu cada gata gota de suor ao ver as crianças saindo da sala e mostrando orgulhosos seus tesouros para os pais e amigos. Sem preço!

At the beginning of the year Marta’s teacher asked parents for help in making new clothes for the dolls in the Kindergarten classroom.  As my knitting has been kind of dormant lately I offered my sewing skills instead (but I did knit one pair of doll socks!). It took me about three or four weeks to get those little garments ready, and they were actually easy to make for the most part but for some fiddly bits like the sleeves in the dresses. I wish I could share with you the pattern for the coat, bonnet and dress but I gave it back without taking a picture or even writing the name/number down. It was an ancient old McCalls, I think. The sleeping sac is my own design if you can call cutting up a felted sweater just by eyeing the doll a design! Also note that the pink dress, coat and bonnet were made for a 18″ doll so they look rather big in our 14″ doll at home.

I delivered them to the teacher last week and have heard that the dolls have already received them and that the doll’s corner has been re-enlivened by their arrival. Simple things like that make me very happy!

No início do ano a professora da Marta pediu aos pais dos alunos alguns de nós poderia/gostaria de fazer roupas novas para as bonecas da sala do jardim da infância. Como o meu tricô anda meio adormecido eu ofereci, ao invés,  minhas habilidades com a maáquina de costura (mas eu tricotei um par de meia para as bonecas!). Eu levei umas três ou quatro semanas para fazer todas as peças, e foi relativamente fácil apesar do tamanho pequeno e das mangas dos vestidos. Eu adoraria compartilhar o o molde do vestido, casaco e  chapéu, mas eu o devolvi antes de fotografar ou mesmo anotar o nome e o número. O saco de dormir é criação minha e foi feito com um casaco de lã feltrado. O vestido cor de rosa, o casaco e o chapéu foram feitos para uma boneca de 18 polegadas e por isso ficaram grandes nas fotos na nossa boneca de casa, de 14 ploegadas.

Eu entreguei as roupas para a professora na semana passada e já soube que as bonecas as receberam e que o cantinho das bonecas ganhou vida nova com a chegada do novo guarda-roupa. Coisas simples assim me fazem muito feliz!

… would like to invite you to The Toronto Waldorf School Candlelight Fair that takes place in two weeks time, on the 19th of November. The fair is aimed at young children and their families and is a magical wonderland with lots of activities for the little and not so little ones.  Each grade is responsible for an activity and for a community table where they will be selling crafts made either by the children or their parents to raise funds for the school. You guessed it! The gnomes are made by the kindergarten parents for the fair. Aren’t they gorgeous? Those are the ones I made, but there’s an army of more than 100 of them ready for the fair. The event is not restricted to the scholl families and is open to the public. If you’re in the area and are interested in participating it is from 11 am to 4 pm. Here’s a link to the poster. (Please note that the correct time is from 11 and not from 10 am as  the poster says!)

You might also like to know that on the same day, also at the school,  there will be an Arts & Crafts market with over 40 artisans selling their beautiful and high quality ware (I’ve seen a preview!).  With the Holiday season approaching this is an excellent opportunity for finding that unique gift for the loved ones in your life. Esse casal muito simpático gostaria convidar você para a Candlelight Fair na escola Waldorf de Toronto.  A feira é um evento direcionado ao público infantil  que transforma a escola num mundo mágico com várias atividades para os pequenos e os não tão pequenos.  Cada série é responsável por uma atividade e também por uma banca onde vendem artesanato que foi priduzido ou pelos próprios alunos ou seus pais com objetivo de levantar fundos para a escola. Ha! Adivinhou. Esses gnomos tão lindinhos estão sendo produzidos pelos pais, ok mães, das crianças do jardim da infância. Esses da foto fui eu quem fiz, mas tem um batalhão de mais de 100 deles prontos para a feira. O evento não é restrito só aos alunos e famílias da escola, é público e se vocês estiver na área e interssado vai de 11 da manhã as 4 da tarde. Aqui para o cartaz.

Talvez te interesse saber que no mesmo dia, também na escola, acontecerá um mercado de artesanato com mais de 40 artesãos e seus produtos. Uma excelente oportunidade para achar aquele presente único e diferenciado para as pessoas queridas na sua vida! O mercado começa as 9 e vai até as 6 da tarde. Aqui para o cartaz.

When we were away in the Summer I got started in knitting socks as Christmas gifts for all the members of our family. Warren’s was the first one I worked on and I used one of my favourite basic socks pattern, the Basic Ribbed Socks by Kate Atherley. Because we were away I wanted the project to last so I went for the good old four needles. While in Philadelphia Warren’s mum presented me  with a great book called Toe-up Socks for Every Body by Wendy Johnson. I’ve been toying with the idea of learning the toe-up method for a long time so when back home I jumped right in and knitted the Critter Socks pattern for both Marta and Liliana. For those I used two circular needles and for Marta’s I knitted one sock at a time, but for Liliana I knitted the two together.  I’m very pleased with the socks even though my colour work is pretty poor…  in fact I thought it was quite hard do do it on the two circular needles, in especial to carry the unused yarn on the sides where you change needles, I just couldn’t find a way to give the yarn the slack necessary so if you look carefully you’ll see that it is pulling at the sides. Oh well… I’ll have to try something different next time. I’m sure Marta and Liliana will still enjoy the kitty cats and the socks will keep their toesies warm just as well!

Quando estávamos viajando durante o verão eu comecei a tricotar meias para dar de presente de Natal para todos os membros da nossa família. A do Warren foi a primeira que fiz, e usei uma das receitas que mais gosto: the Basic Ribbed Socks por Kate Atherley. Porque estávamos viajando e eu queria que o projeto durasse bastante, optei pelas boas e velhas quatro agulhas. Enquanto na Filadélfia a mãe do Warren me presenteou com o livro Toe-up Socks for Every Body por Wendy Johnson. Eu já vinha querendo aprender o método de fazer meias começamdo pelos dedos do pé há um tempão, então assim que chegamos de volta em casa comecei a Critters Socks para Marta e Lili. Para essas eu usei duas agulhas circulares e para a Marta eu fiz uma de cada vez, e para a Lili fiz as duas ao mesmo tempo. As meias ficaram ótimas apesar do trabalho de cores meio capenga. Mas eu tenho certeza que as meninas vão curtir os gatinhos de qualquer maneira e as meias vão esquentar os pezinhos do mesmo jeito!  Eu totalmente aprovei o método. 

We know that there will be innumerous opportunities for Marta and Liliana to dress up and go out trick-or-treating with friends in the future, so we are in no rush to expose them to the gory costumes you see out there nor to the amount of sugar children come back home with. Our Halloween went just as planned, quiet and just a little bit scary! We brought our jack-o-lanterns to our dinner table and lit them up, turned off all the lights and had a lovely supper. For desert we had pumpkin shaped home made chocolate chip cookies. We sang Halloween songs and talked about ghosts and witches… and that was enough to get both girls healthily scared. I got the idea of painting the tangerines here.

A gente sabe que não vão faltar oportunidades para a Marta e a Liliana se fantasiarem e saírem nas ruas com amigos no futuro, por isso não temos a menor pressa em expô-las as fantasias horrorosas com rostos distorcidos nem a quantidade de açúcar com que as crianças voltam para a casa. Nosso Halloween foi como previsto, calmo e só um poquinho assustador. A gente trouxe as nossas lanternas para a mesa de jantar, acendemos as velas e saboreamos um delicioso jantar. De sobremesa, bicoitos de chocolate feitos em casa em forma de abóboras. Nós cantamos múscas de Halloween, conversamos sobre fantasmas e bruxas e foi o suficiente para deixar as meninas com uma dose saudável de medo. A idéia de pintar as tangerinas veio daqui.

A few weeks ago we went to the pumpkin patch and those pumpkins waited very patiently until today, when they became jack-o-lanterns.  Last year the girls wanted happy pumpkins and they had to be a boy and a girl. This year they wanted them to be scary. At least one is, kind of…  We don’t go trick-or-treating on Halloween evening, so we will repeat what we did last year that worked really well. We will have supper in the dark, sing Halloween songs and eat chocolate for desert. Anticipation is building up…

Há algumas semanas atrás nós trouxemos as abóboras para casa e elas esperaram pacientemente até hoje quando viraram lanternas de Halloween. Ano passado as meninas quiseram abóboras felizes e uma tinha que ser menino e a outra menina. Esse ano elas quiseram abóboras com caras feias. Pelo menos uma ficou de assustar, um pouquinho… A gente não sai na rua com o resto do povo de casa em casa, mas vamos repetir o que fizemos ano passado. Um jantar no escuro, músicas de Halloween e chocolate de sobremesa. Hmmm antecipação já está no ar…
