hands follow heart

Last weekend we finally moved to our new house and as far as moving goes ours went quite well. Warren hired a truck and a couple of high school students to help lift the heavy boxes and furniture. A few more friends showed up out of their own initiative to help moving things, and another few showed up with meals for us. I’m so grateful to be part of such a wonderful community. Something that has all the potential for an otherwise  stressful and boring day turns out to be filled with joy and fun when friends are involved.

Ours is a delightful little house right in the heart of a very charming neighborhood. We’ve been here only a week and although there are quite a few boxes around still it already feels like home. The  only down side is that we’re not so near to the school anymore and the girls can’t walk there from here. We’re trying out a few alternatives to avoid buying a second car.  We’re also  enjoying all the surprises blooming on our new backyard as Spring settles in for real. Looks like we’re having some fruits! And the children are exploring every little corner and making them their own.

I can’t finish this post without saying that I’m very grateful for our old house that hosted us for our first three years in Canada. I’ll be sad to see it being torn down to become some more 20 townhouses.

No fim de semana passado nós finalmente nos mudamos para a casa nova. A mudança em si até que correu muito bem. Warren alugou um caminhão e contratou dois estudantes do ensino médio para ajudar a carregar as caixas pesadas e móveis. Outros amigos apareceram por conta própria para ajudar na mudaça e ainda outros apareceram com refeições para a gente. Eu sou muito grata de fazer parte de uma comunidade tão bacana. Algo que potencialmente seria tão estressante e tediante se transforma num evento alegre e divertido quando os amigos estão presentes.

A nossa casinhaé uma graça, e bem no meio de um bairro muito charmoso. Estamos aqui há apenas uma semana e apesar de ainda termos caixas por todos os lados, a casa já parece lar. O único problema é que não estamos mais tão perto da escola e as meninas não podem ir mais caminhando com o Warren de manhã. Estamos tentando algumas alternativas para evitar comprarmos um segundo carro. Estamos também curtindo todas as surpesas que estão desabrochando no nosso novo jardim uma vez que a primavera está finalmente aqui. Parece que teremos algumas frutas! E as crianças estão explorando cada cantinho com muita alegria.

Eu não posso terminar esse post sem dizer que sou muito agradecida a nossa antiga casa que nos abrigou nos nossos primeiros três anos no Canadá. Vai ser com uma cert tristeza que vou ver a casa ser demolida para dar lugar a mais umas 20 casas geminadas.

My site has been hacked and infected with some malicious script. My sincere apologies if you popped round and got a scary screen, like I did, saying “Reported Attack Page”.  Just so you know, my site never hosted or distributed the malware itself but the malicious script planted somewhere in there had a link to a site that did. My computer geek days are long gone so I’m ever so grateful to Dreamhost customer support who helped me to get rid of it and fix other security and vulnerability issues. The problem has finally been solved but it took me a while because, of course, it had to happen right when we were moving houses. Murphy rules.

O meu site foi hackeado e infectado com um script malicioso. Mil desculpas se você me visitou e uma janela ameaçadora apareceu dizendo que era uma página perigosa. O meu site não alojou nem distribuiu software malicioso, mas o script plantado nele tinha um link para um site que o fazia. Sou super grata ao serviço de ajuda ao usuário do Dreamhost que me ajudou a me livrar do script e outros problemas de segurança e vulnerabilidade. O problema foi finalmente resolvido, e só tomou esse tempo todo porque, é claro, tinha que acontecer justamente quando estávamos nos mudando. Lei de murphy.

I made this top especially to take on our trip to Brazil. I’ve had this pattern since 2009 and never quite got to, but this was the perfect quick project to fit in at the busy time that it was just before we left. The magazine calls just for a t-shirt on which you cut the neck and add on the crochet detail. I wanted a sleeveless top for the Brazilian Summer, so I used one of Warren’s old t-shirts and cut up and sewed a tank top using one of mine as a pattern. I left the bottom raw so it would curl up and finished the arm holes with a blanket stitch using the same yarn as the neck. I’m so pleased with it and particularly love the change of colours in the yarn. The pattern is from Crochet Today! magazine (UK) Sept/Oct 2009.

Eu fiz essa camiseta especialmente para levar na nossa viagem ao Brasil. Eu tenho essa receita desde 2009 mas nunca consegui pegar nela até então. Esse foi o projeto relâmpago que coube perfeitamente nos últimos dias antes da viagem. A receita pede apenas por uma camiseta,  mas como eu queria uma sem manga para o calor do Brasil eu acabei fazendo uma a partir de uma camiseta velhao do Warren. Eu deixie a blusa sem bainha para ela poder enrolar, nos braços eu dei um acabamento com ponto caseado usando o mesmo fio que o pescoço. Eu amei o resultado, em particular como o fio muda de cor no pescoço. A receita é da revista Crochet Today! da Inglaterra de Set/Out 2009.

We’re living among the boxes,

I’m having a must deserved break,

and the grils are celebrating  a surprising 25 C/ 77 F (feels like 29 C/84 F) outside with a snack of homemade raspberry ice cream that we made last Summer. According to the forecast tomorrow we can expect the temperature to drop to 2 C/35 F. Crazy, crazy.

Estamos vivendo entre as caixas,

Eu estou curtindo um merecido descanso,

As meninas estão celebrando um dia de verão lá fora tomando sorvete de fraboesa feito em casa. Hoje a temperatura esta 25 graus com sensação térmica de 29. Amanhã a previsão do tempo diz que de manhã a temperatura será de 3 graus! Tá tudo louco!!!

While in Brazil we stayed mostly in Rio but for four days we escaped to the mountains of Minas Gerais (the neighbouring state), to the historic town of Tiradentes.  Tiradentes (his real name was Joaquim Jose da Silva Xavier) was an important figure in Brazilian history and was one of the first personalities to imagine a Brazil separate from Portugal, as an independent republic. He ended up being hanged for conspiring against the crown and the republic would only come about some 100 years after his death in 1792. The town of Tiradentes is also known for being the best well preserved brazilian baroque art centre. Amongst the many churches you can find in town there is the Matriz de Santo Antonio, built in 1710, a beautiful example of the baroque architecture and the second church with the most gold content (in decoration)  in Brazil.  Today Tiradentes also hosts one of the most vibrant crafts communities in the area. You can find exquisite handmade items and workshops in every corner. The most popular materials being wood and textile, mostly weaving. Of course I brought back some beautiful weaving for our new home! But the nicest thing of all was to spend lovely time with the family away from the chaos of the big city!

No Brasil nós ficamos principalmente no Rio, mas por quatro dias nós escapamos para as montanhas de Minas, para a cidade histórica de Tiradentes.  Tiradentes, ou Joaquim José da Silva Xavier, foi uma figura importante na história do Brasil e uma das primeiras personalidades a imaginar um Brasil separado de Portugal, em forma de república. Ele acabou sendo enforcado por conspirar contra a coroa e a proclamação da república só veio a acontecer uns 100 anos após a sua morte em 1792. A cidade de Tiradentes também é conhecida por ser o centro mais bem preservado da arte barroca no Brasil. Entre as muitas igrejas que se encontram pela cidade há a Matriz de Santo Antônio, construída em 1710, um exemplo lindo da arquitetura barroca e a segunda igreja em conteúdos (de decoração) em ouro no Brasil. Hoje Tiradentes abriga uma vibrante comunidade de artesãos na região e a cada canto acham-se lindos objetos feitos à mão principalmente em madeira e fibras têxteis. Claor que eu não podia deixar de trazer lindas mantas e toalhas para a casa nova! Mas a melhor coisa da viagem foi passar tempo com a família longe do caos da cidade grande.

Well hello! Tomorrow it will complete a week we’re back home from our trip to Brazil. Even though the time difference between Rio and Toronto is only one hour at this time of the year, it has taken us the best part of a week to settle in. On top of that we’re moving houses in two weeks time. Right now Warren is at the new house giving the girl’s new bedroom a good coat of paint and I’m taking a break from sorting things for packing.  I’m still hopeful  I’ll manage to update the blog in the next few days and post some pictures from our tirp. Let’s see how that goes… Anyhow, I hope you had a lovely Easter! The bunny was quite generous over here.

Olá! Amanhã completa uma semana que já estamos de volta da nossa viagem ao Brasil. Apesar da diferença do fuso horário ser de apenas uma hora entre Rio e Toronto nessa época do ano, levamos uma parte da semana para readaptarmos. E como se isso não fosse o suficiente estamos de mudança em duas semanas! Nesse exato momento o Warren está na casa nova dando uma demão no quarto das meninas enquanto eu estou dando um intervalo na arrumação/encaixotamento. Eu tenho esperança de atualizar o blog nos próximos dias e colocar mais fotos da nossa viagem. Vamos ver… De qualquer forma espero que a sua Páscoa tenha sido feliz! O coelhinho foi bem generoso aqui por essas bandas!
