hands follow heart

I’ve been pretty bad at documenting my work lately, both visually and in words. I keep waiting until I have the time, or better light, or tidy background… to make some nice pictures but that never seems to happen.  As we’re gearing up to go to Brazil next week and the to-do list is only increasing, I thought I’d use the pictures I have and just put all in one post.  This is what I have been working on for the past two moths:

A pair of mittens for me! Finally. I’m also almost finished with this shawl that I’ve been working on and off for the past two years.

Finished Warren’s vest. And Liliana’s too, but alas, no picture was taken.

I made this skirt for me. I also made a linnen skirt and a linnen blouse but no pictures yet.

And made skirts for the girls to use in Brazil using this tutorial.

Ultimamente eu tenho andado meio relapsa no que diz respeito a documentar os meus trabalhos, tanto visualmente quanto em palavras. Eu fico esperando ter tempo, a luz perfeita, a casa arrumada… para tirar boas fotografias, mas parece que as condições nunca estão perfeitas. Como estamos nos preparando para ir ao Brasil semana que vem e a lista de coisas para fazer só cresce, eu resolvi usar as fotos que já tinha colocar tudo num só post. É isso que venho fazendo nos últimos dois meses.

Marta loves to draw and she is not daunted in the least by a blank sheet of paper. Colour just seems to pour out of this girl. I think it is quite amazing how she fills the entire page with colour.  Most times her drawings are pictorial but quite a few are abstract with bold shapes and colours. I absolutely adore them.

Marta ama desenhar e não se sente nenhum pouco intimidada por uma folha de papel em branco. As cores parecem jorrar dessa menina. Eu acho incrível como ela consegue encher a folha de papel inteirinha com cores. Na maior parte das vezes seus desenhos são pictoriais mas outros muitos são abstratos, com formas e cores fortes. Eu amo esses desenhos!

We had a wonderful snow fall the Saturday before last, but by Tuesday morning the snowmen we built had broken into pieces as the temperature got warmer. On Wednesday morning Marta and Liliana and a friend of mine who (looks after them one afternoon a week) transformed the blobs of snow into four funny faces. What a lovely surprise to come back home to. It cracked me up!

Caiu muita neve aqui no sábado passado, mas na terça a noite os bonecos de neve caíram aos pedaços quando a temperatura começou a subir. Na quarta feira a Marta e Liliana e minha amiga (que toma conta delas uma tarde por semana) transformaram os pedaços dos bonecos de neve nas caras mais engraçadas que eu ja vi. Adorei a surpresa ao voltar para casa. Morri de rir!

Last Saturday we had a whole morning of snow fall, the wet, good packing snow. Perfect for snow balls and snowmen. We spent a good four hours playing outside non-stop. When making things out of snow wore off I brought out some food dye an the girls had a wonderful time painting the snow. Liliana and Marta were busy digging into the giant snow ball making fairy houses and later at night the holes became candle holders and we enjoyed our creations from the dinner table. Fun, fun, fun!

No sábado nevou a manhã toda, aquela neve molhada, boa mesmo para fazer bolas ou bonecos de neve. Nós passamos umas boas quatro horas brincando no jardim. Marta and Liliana cavaram buracos na bola de neve gigante para fazer casas para as fadas. Quando as meninas cansaram de fazer coisas de neve eu trouxe corante de comida da cozinha e as meninas se puseram a colorir a neve. A noite colocamos velas nos buracos da bola de neve e curtimos as nssas criações da sala de jantar. Só diversão!

On Marta’s Birthday we invited five of her closest friends and their families to celebrate with us. The girls decorated candles using thin sheets of coloured beeswax and cookie cutters, followed by a game of pass-the-parcel and a story told by a dear friend. Papa made a delicious lemon merengue pie. Mama baked the cupcakes and made the simplest of totes for the children to take home the candles and the gifts from the game. It was a lot of fun to put the party together and just so rewarding to see Marta’s happy face shining throughout. Only this Mama was exhausted the following day!

Para o aniversário da Marta nós conidamos cinco das suas amigas mais próximas e suas famílias para celebrarem conosco. As meninas decoraram velas usando finas folhas coloridas de cêra de abelha e fôrmas de biscoito, jogaram Prenda Surpresa e ouviram uma história contada por uma amiga querida. O Papa fez uma deliciosa torta de limão. A Mama fez os cupcakes e a bolsinha super simples para a criançada levar a vela e as prendas do jogo para a casa. Foi uma curtição preparar a festa e uma alegria ver a cara de felicidade da Marta durante a festa. O único porém foi que essa Mama ficou morta no dia seguinte!

So far the Winter has been pretty fickle up here. The temperature keeps floating between just below freezing and some 10C. We haven’t had that much snow at all but lots of rain and mud instead. But still we find something to play with outdoors. The water that froze in the containers outside can always become fun sculptures during the day and beautiful ice lanterns at night. What a  good exercise on impermanence and detachment this was. The sculptures only lasted two days and have now meted away. The buckets are full again and we’re ready for the next freezing spell!

O inverno aqui tem estado bem indeciso esse ano. A temperatura varia entre -3 e +10C. Quase não tivemos neve mas temos tido muita chuva e lama. Mas ainda assim achamos coisas para fazer ao ar livre. A água que congelou nos recipientes deixados do lado de fora viraram divertidas esculturas pela manhã e lindas lanternas de gelo a noite. Esse foi também um ótimo exercício em desapego e impermanência. Nossas obras de arte duraram apenas dois dias antes de derreterem completamente. Já enchemos os baldes de novo e estamos prontos para a temperatura congelar de novo!
