hands follow heart

I was so inspired by the crafts session at the school this week that I couldn’t help but make some more felted eggs when I got home. I also fell in love with this origami bunny box I found via How About Orange and decided to put the two together. We’re having an Easter lunch with four other families and I thought that the bunny box and the felted egg would make a lovely gift for the children so I just threw a treat in the mix and voi-lá, it’s perfect!

The sewn eggs are now hanging on our nature table. They are so wonky they make me laugh. I thought I just had to share a few pictures with you!

A sessão de artesanato na escola essa semana foi tão inspiradora que não pude deixar de fazer mais ovinhos de feltro quando cheguei em casa. Eu também me apaixonei por essa caixa-coelho feita de origami que eu achei via How About Orange e decidi colocar os dois juntos. Nós vamos fazer um almoço de Páscoa com mais quatro famílias e eu achei que os coelhos seriam uma ótima lembrança para as crianças. Foi só adicionar um chocolatinho e voi-lá! Perfeito!

Os ovos de pano estão pendurados no galho da nossa mesa da natureza. Eles são tão tortinhos que me fazem rir. Eu tive que compartilhar alumas fotos com vocês!

Here we are again in a week full of celebrations, honoring both our Jewish and Catholic roots. On Monday we had a lovely (and child friendly) Passover Seder at a friend’s house. This weekend we are celebrating Easter. Wishing you much joy in your celebrations too.

Cá estamos em uma semana cheia de celebrações, honrando nossas raízes judáicas e católicas. Na segunda feira participamos de um lindo Seder na casa de amigos que foi na medida certa para as crianças. Nesse fim de semana celebraremos a Páscoa. Desejando a você muitas alegrias nas suas celerações também.

Thrifting is an art that I’m still to master. Forget master… learn. I so admire people that come back from their trips to the thrift shops or garage sales with the most amazing finds. Well, I go to a thrift store and come back either with empty hands or with a few things that I look at later and don’t quite know why it seemed like a good idea to bring them home. But not this time. I actually found three pieces of fabric that I really liked then and still like every time I look at them.  One is an Ikea print which has enough material to make a skirt, my first thought. Maybe a bag too? The other one is a very nice wool blanket that I think will be turned into winter vests/tunic for the girls and I. There’s plenty of fabric to make some dry felting blankets too, to be used under the project while using the felting needles. I’ve been looking for a wool blanket for ages! And the last is a queen size duvet cover made out of the softest of the cottons. Have no clue what I’m going to do with that yet.  I’m so very happy with my purchase that I’m planning another trip to the thrift store this week. Fun!

Comprar coisas em brechós é uma arte que eu não domino. Eu admiro muito as pessoas que voltam de suas compras em lojas de artigos de segunda mão com os achados mais fantásticos. Eu vou a um brechó e volto ou com as mãos vazias, ou com algumas coisas que quando olho eu não sei exatamente poque me pareceu uma boa idéia trazê-las para casa. Mas não dessa vez. Eu achei três  panos que eu gostei quando vi e que ainda gosto toda vez que olho para eles. Um é um padrão da Ikea, que acho que vai virar uma saia. E talvez uma sacola também. O outro é um cobertor de lã que eu acho que vai virar um colete de inverno para as meninas e talvez para mim também. E tem tecido o suficiente para fazer uma base de trabalho para feltro seco.  Eu tenho procurado um cobertor de lã por uma eternidade! E o último é uma capa para edredon enorme, feita do algodão mais macio que eu já senti. Ainda não faço idéia do que vou fazer com ele. Eu estou tão satisfeita com o meu sucesso no brechó, que estou planejando uma outra visita a loja essa semana.  Boa sorte pra mim!

Look what came in the post a few days ago! My mum sent all this yumy-ness all the way from Brazil for Marta and Liliana. Oh, you should have seen their faces when they realised the big box in the post was for them. We opened it together and marvelled at each little thing. Hmmm, the chocolate! Those went right back to the box and will remain there until Easter Sunday when Easter bunny will bring some back out. But the toys are out to be played with. Oh, and did you see the sweets? Little cakes and cookies, cupcakes, so much handmade goodness made by this very dedicated grandma. Thank you mum!

Olha o que chegou pelo correio há poucos dias atrás! Minha mãe mandou todas essas delícias lá do Brasil para a Marta e a Liliana. Vocês deviam ter visto a cara das meninas quando desconfiaram que o pacote do correio era para elas. Nós abrimos juntas e olhamos coisa por coisa. Hmmm, chocolate! Esses voltaram direto para a caixa e ficarão por lá até o domingo de Páscoa, quando o coelhinho distribuir seus ovinhos. Mas os coelhinos de brinquedo e as cenouras ficaram de fora e já são parte dos brinquedos preferidos. E vocês viram os doces de brinquedo? Bolinhos, tortinhas, rosquinha tanta gostosura feita a mão por essa avó tão dedicada. Muito obrigada mãe!

I have stumbled upon this fabric eggs tutorial a while ago at the Retromama blog and knew I had to make them sometime. What better occasion than Easter approaching? They are just so simple and so pretty. Of course I imagined mine turning out just as perfect as Retromama’s but when it comes to sewing there’s always a big gap between how I imagine something and how it manifests itself. The truth is I’m terrible when it comes to sewing curves, specially in small objects like the eggs. I just can’t get it no matter how much I try, no matter how slow, how fast, how patiently… it doesn’t go right. That’s not to say that I didn’t like my eggs. I like the cheerful colours and find them quite charming together but can’t deny their wonkiness! If you don’t think they’re that bad it is only because I carefully arranged them for the picture ! While talking about sewing, I thought I’d also share this toy I made for Marta and Liliana. They love to play with lacing cards especially when I’m sewing. It’s a very simple idea that provides lots of opportunities for hand-eye coordination, development of fine motor skills, concentration and just good fun. You can find them in toy shops but they are also very easy to make at home. I was inspired by the “Sewing with Kids” series I came across at Whipstich about teaching children how to sew.

Há um tempo atrás eu esbarrei nesse passo-a-passo de ovo de pano e simplesmente sabia que teria que fazê-los um dia. E que melhor ocasião do que a Páscoa que se aproxima? Eles são tão simples e tão lindos. Claro que eu imaginei que os meus fossem sair tão perfeitos quanto os da Retromama, mas quando o assunto é costura, existe um abismo entre o que eu imagino e o que se manifesta. A verdade é que eu sou terrível em costurar curvas, especialmente em coisas pequenas como os ovos. Não adianta o quanto eu tente, eu naõ consigo fazer direito. Já tentei devagar, rápido, sem pensar muito, com muita paciência e nunca sai certo! Isso não quer dizer que eu não tenha gostado dos meus ovinhos. Eu adorei as cores alegres e como são charmosos juntos, mas não posso negar que são tortinhos. Se você não acha que está tão ruim assim é porque eu os arrumei estratégicamente para a foto ! Aproveitando que o assunto é costura, eu achei apropriado mostrar esse brinquedo que fiz para a Marta e Liliana. Elas adoram brincar de costurar com os cadarços e cartões principalmente quando eu estou costurando. É uma idéia super simples que oferece muitas oportunidades para cordenação olho-mão, desenvolvimento da coordenação motora refinada, concentração além de muita diversão. Eu já vi esse brinquedo em muitas lojas mas é super simples de se fazer em casa. A minha inspiração foi essa série chamada “Sewing with Kids” que eu encontrei no Whipstich sobre como ensinar crianças a costurar.

Marta and Liliana are both very keen on helping with anything Warren and I might be involved with. Be it gardening, cleaning, cooking, washing the dishes, folding laundry, sewing, sanding… you name it. It is true too that it is not always easy to include them in every activity, specially when you want to get it done with quickly. But if the moment is right and there’s no rush, it is actually lovely to have their help and companionship during a task that can be quite boring otherwise. Also, their sense of importance and purposefulness is an immense reward. They literally beam with pride when they feel they have been helpful. So I’m trying to be mindful during my daily activities and slowing down so to offer them the opportunity to help. This is, in and of itself, an immense task for me! But it has been proving its worth. It is hard to take pictures when I’m also focused in the work at hand but I captured these two precious glimpses of the hardworking little ones.

Marta e Liliana adoram ajudar em qualquer coisa que eu e o Warren estivermos fazendo. Seja trabalhar no jardim, faxina na casa, cozinhar, lavar louça, lixando madeira, guardando roupa… literalmente qualquer coisa. É verdade também que é difícil incluí-las em todas as atividades, principalmente quando a gente quer se livrar do trabalho o mais rápido possível. Mas dado o momento certo, quando não há pressa até que é muito bom ter a ajuda e a companhia delas durante uma tarefa que na maioria das vezes é chata. E o sentimento delas de importância e propósito é uma das maiores recompensas. Imapagável. Elas brihnam de orgulho quando sentem que a ajuda delas fez alguma diferença. Eu tenho tentado estar consciente durante as minhas atividades do dia e desacelerado o ritmo para poder oferecer a elas a oportunidade de ajudar. Essa é a tarefa mais difícil para mim, mas tem valido a pena! É difícil fotografar quando eu também estou concentrada no trabalho, mas eu consegui capturar esses dois momentos preciosos.

Super simple to make and loved by babies a tag blanket is a perfect last minute gift. The idea had been on my mind for a few weeks, I admit, but I didn’t get to make it  until pretty much the evening before we went to visit our friends to welcome their new baby girl. I remember first seeing  tag blankets when Marta was a baby some fours years ago, still in England. Though we never had one I could see how much other babies enjoyed them so popular that they were at that time. It’s definitely something about the silky texture of the ribbons that they like to rub between their little awakening fingers. I hope baby C. will enjoy it as much as did making it for her. Super fácil de fazer e amado pelos bebês, a manta de fitas é o presente de última hora perfeito. A idéia estava na minha cabeça por semanas, eu admito, mas foi só na noite da véspera de visitar nossos amigos que eu fiz a manta. A primeira vez que eu vi esse cobertorzinho foi quando a Marta era bebê, ainda na Inglaterra. Apesar de nunca termos tido um, eu pude ver o quanto os outros bebês curtiam essa mantinha de tão popular que era. É com certeza a textura sedosa das fitas que eles gostam passar os dedinhos que estão acordando para o mundo. Espero que a bebê C. goste da mantinha tanto quantto eu curti fazer para ela. Agora dá só uma olhada nesse outro brinquedinho de fitas no mmmcrafts. Mesmo conceito. Não é uma graça?
