Inspired by our visit to the Sugarbush Maple Syrup Festival at the Kortright Centre a few weeks ago Warren and his little helper set out to tap all the three maple trees in our yard.  The maple syrup making season is short and lasts only for as long the temperature is below freezing during the night and sunny and warm during the day.  Around this parts that is  about six weeks. After you collect the sap you have to boil it down until most of the water has evaporated but not all, or else it becomes maple sugar. It takes 40 parts of sap to make one part of syrup. No wonder the syrup’s colour is golden! In the old days people used to boil the sap outside. In fact, even today the enthusiasts that make it at home still choose to boil it outdoors to avoid water running down the walls and the humidity levels like that of a tropical jungle like it happened here in our house. But it was all worth it. Even though ours  are Norwegian maples (as opposed to sugar maples)  the syrup turned out deliciously sweet. So  it will be a very special treat to have homemade maple syrup with our pancakes on Saturday. Can’t wait!

Inspirados pela nossa visita ao Sugarbush Maple Syrup Festival no Kortright Centre há algumas semanas atrás o Warren e a sua pequena ajudante se puseram a perfurar as três árvores de maple do nosso jardim. A temporada de producão do maple syrup é curta e dura apenas enquanto a temperatura vai a abaixo de zero durante a noite mas já está mais quente durante o dia. Por aqui a temporada dura mais ou menos umas seis semanas. Depois de coletar a seiva ela deve ser fervida até que quase toda a água se evapore mas não toda, senão vira açúcar de maple. Leva 40 partes de seiva para produzir uma parte do maple syrup. Não é a toa que a cor dessa delícia seja dourada! Nos velhos tempos, e ainda hoje, os entusiastas que se aventuram a fazer em casa, fervem a seiva do lado de fora para evitar água escorrendo pelas paredes e a sensação de humidade igual a de uma floresta tropical, como aconteceu aqui em casa. Mas valeu a pena. Apesar das nossas árvores não serem os sugar maple (são maples noruegueses) o maple syrup ficou divino. Será um luxo comermos nossas panquecas no sábado com maple syroup feito em casa. Mal posso esperar!

N.B. Maple syrup em português é xarope de bordo… achei melhor manter maple syrup mesmo!

It turns out that the timing for our holiday wasn’t really that great. We were meant to be in Brazil right now for starters but are stuck here in visa limbo. As soon as we knew about our situation we booked a holiday in the country for, of course, there’s lots that we want to explore here in Canada. By the time we left I truly thought Marta and Liliana were back to normal and in fact we all had a wonderful and restoring night of sleep just the night before. But alas, the two little girls weren’t feeling tip top and for our dismay really didn’t want to spend any time outdoors. It was colder than it was at home as we were further north and on top of that there was a cold snap and it got even colder, very cold indeed and that didn’t help us at all. Luckily Warren had booked us in a quite nice and spacious chalet with plenty of natural light and a fireplace so staying indoors wasn’t as unpleasant it could have been. The girls were still tired and slept quite a lot during the day (and night!) and I don’t think I’ve had this much reading time in ages! We did have a few outings, of course, and here’s the most beautiful thing I’ve seen on this trip, the view of the frozen Georgian Bay. Really stunning. We are back at home now and the girls seem well in their bodies and spirits, finally! But I think I’m the one coming down with a cold now…

Acabou que as nossas mini-férias não foram lá das melhores. Para começar, éramos para estar no Brasil agora mas estamos presos aqui num limbo entre vistos, mas assim que soubemos da nossa situação nós planejamos as nossas férias por aqui mesmo, pois há vários lugares que gostaríamos de explorar no Canadá. No dia em que saímos de viagem eu realmente pensei que a Marta e a Liliana já estavam boas, tanto que todos dormiram maravilhosamente bem na noite anterior. Mas que nada, as duas menininhas ainda não estavam 100% e para nossa frustração só quiseram ficar no hotel. Estava mais frio do que em casa pois estávamos mais ao norte, e para piorar ainda teve uma frente fria o que não nos ajudou em nada. Por sorte o Warren reservou um chalet bem espaçoso, com muita luz natural e uma lareira, o que fez ficar no hotel bem menos desagradável do que poderia ter sido. As meninas dormiram um bocado durante o dia (e noite!) e há muito tempo eu não tinha tanto tempo para ler! É claro que a gente fez alguns passeios e aqui está o que u vi de mais bonito nessa viagem, a vista da Georgian Bay congelada. Muito lindo. Agora estamos de volta em casa e todos parecem bem, menos eu… que acho que peguei uma gripe.

We are having a bit of down time here as both Marta and Liliana have been taking turns on being ill this past week and a half. Both girls are requiring lots of extra attention from this mama (and papa)  so our days have been quite dedicated to nursing and cuddling the little ones and recovering (barely) from sleepless nights. We’re going away tomorrow for a couple of days so I’m really hoping for a full night of sleep for everyone resulting in full recovery so we can enjoy our mini holiday. As coisas estão devagar por aqui pois por uma semana e meia a Marta e a Liliana estão se revezando em ficar doentes. As duas estão precisando de muita atenção dessa mama (e papa) e nossos dias tem sido cheios de cuidados e colinhos e a tentativa de se recuperar de noite mal dormidas. Amanhã estamos indo viajar por dois dias então espero que essa noite todos durmam bem e acordem 100% recuperados para podermos curtir nossa mini-férias. Bom resto de semana pra vocês e até a volta.

So all the snow is gone and all the ice has melted.  And just a few days after I wrote the “Hoping for Spring” post guess what we found on the ground? The first snow drops! What a joy. Having spent my first full Winter in Canada (we went to Brazil for a break in the two previous ones) I could really, really appreciate this change of the seasons. I know, it can still get cold again and even snow, but it won’t go back to being Winter or not until November/December at least. We haven’t yet changed our Nature table but to welcome the new season I made two Spring pixies for Marta and Liliana. Pink, of course as Marta was obsessed with the one I made for the school!

Agora toda a neve se foi e todo o gelo que estava no chão já derreteu. E apenas dois dias depois de escrever o post “Hoping for Spring” adivinha o que achamos no chão? As primeiras “snow drops”. Que alegria! Tendo passado o meu primeiro inverno inteiro no Canadá (uma vez que fomos ao Brasil nos dois últimos) eu pude com certeza apreciar a troca de estação. Eu sei que ainda pode esfriar de novo e até nevar, mas não vai voltar a ser inverno, ou pelo menos até novembro/dezembro. A gente ainda não trocou a mesa da natureza, mas para celebrar a  nova estação eu fiz duas fadinhas para a Marta e Liliana. Cor de rosa, é claro pois a Marta ficou obcecada com o que eu fiz para a escola!

Marta has been making amazing progress in her drawings lately going from quite abstract forms and colour to scenes like (as named by her): “grass, flowers, sky and sun”, “umbrella in the rain and walking in very tall grass” but last week she made a huge leap and started drawing people. She came back home from school saying that she made a drawing of me and completely melted my heart.  I asked if she would like to make another one and off she went. She came back with not only a picture of me but of herself, papa, sister, grandpa, grandma, uncle and my grandmother! Her drawings of people are pretty typical of a four year old: a big head with arms and legs coming straight out of it. But the funniest thing is that she dressed everyone quite elaborately and with the funkiest hairdos ever. She cracks me up this girl.

A Marta tem feito altos progressos nos seus desenhos nesses últimos meses, indo das formas abstratas  as cenas como (nomeadas por ela): “grama, flores, céu e sol” e “guarda-chuva  na chuva e andando na grama alta”. Mas na semana passada ela deu um grnade salto e comeou a desenhar gente. Ela voltou da escola dizendo que tinha me desenhado e eu fiquei toda boba! Eu perguntei se ela gostaria de fazer outro e lá se foi ela. Quando voltou tinha feito não só um desenho meu mas dela, do pai, da irmã, dos avós, do tio e da minha avó! Os desenhos dela são típicos de crianças de quatro anos, um cabeça enorme com braços e pernas saindo dela. Mas o interessante é que ela vestiu todo mundo nos menores detalhes e com a cabeleiras mais engraçadas que eu já vi. Essa menina me mata de rir!

Spring and Winter a doing a dance around here. One week the temperature goes as high as 12 C only to go back down again to -3 the next. King Winter is not letting go so easily but something has definitely shifted. After three months of snow covered ground it is actually a relief to see the earth through the melting ice and even see some green there. Are we all ready for Spring? Yes, yes, yes please!

A primavera e o inverno estão fazendo uma dança por aqui. Numa semana atemperatura sobe para 12 graus e na outra baixa de novo para -3. O Rei Inverno não está largando do seu domínio assim tão fácil mas alguma coisa mudou. Depois de três meses de chão coberto de neve estamos conseguindo ver a terra através do gelo derretendo, e até uma folhinhad verdes. Estamos prontos para primavera? Sim, sim, sim por favor!!!

Marta and Liliana were playing with one of my old knitting magazines when Marta spotted a knitted cupcake. She ran up to me and asked if I could make one for her, like, “right now, mama”.  The magazine didn’t bring the pattern so I did a quick search on Ravelry and found this lovely free pattern.  I then looked up my bag of leftover yarn and found a few suitable colours and got started. It was all very fine apart from the fact that it turned out huge! I used yarn that is slightly thicker than dk and only afterward I realised the pattern offers a smaller size which would probably have given me a more accurate cupcake size. Doh! I also think that cotton would have worked better as wool is more elastic and doesn’t hold the shape that well. But anyhow, I finished the next day and left it for Marta on a little plate on her play table. It was so delightful to watch. Even though she asked for it and saw me working on it she was still surprised and radiant that I had made the cupcake for her. So precious.

Marta e Liliana estavam brincando com uma das minhas revistas de tricô velhas quando a marta viu um bolinho de tricô. Ela correu pra mim e perguntou se eu podia fazer um para ela, assim, “pra agora mama”! A revista não tinha a receita então eu fiz uma busca rápida no Ravelry e achei essa gracinha de receita de graça. Eu dei uma olhada no meu saco de sobras de lã e achei algumas cores que podiam dar certo e comecei o projeto. Ficou tudo ótimo menos o fato de que o bolinho ficou enorme! Eu usei um fio que era mais grosso do que dk e só depois de pronto é que vi que a receita traz um tamnho menor que provavelmente me daria um tamnho mais de acordo com o bolinho. Eu acho também que fio de algodão funcionaria melhor uma vez que lã é mais elástica e não segura a forma tão bem. De qualquer forma, eu acabei o projeto no dia seguinte e deixei para a Marta num pratinho em cima da mesa de brincar. Tão lindo de ver. Apesar de ela ter me pedido para fazer o bolinho e de ter me visto fazê-lo ainda assim ela ficou surpresa e radiante de eu ter feito o bolinho para ela. Precioso!

Yay! I finally finished the quilt I was making for the girl’s room. It is a very simple quilt, just squares of two different sizes all joined with straight seams. For this one I didn’t want to take many risks, I just wanted to go through the whole process of making a quilt relatively quickly and without being caught up in a too complicated top. I didn’t buy any fabric for this project but the highlight is the Amy Butler fat quarter set I had for almost a year from a sales I was lucky to spot! I love the final result but confess that I struggled a bit to find the right balance of colours. That was mainly because all the prints I used have  similar value and not much contrast between them. I also chose to quilt it very simply, just with parallel lines following the big square blocks. Having completed this small quilt rather successfully I think I’m ready to risk a more complex top and free motion quilting… hmmm, maybe not free motion quilting yet.

Oba! Finalmente acabei a coberta que estava fazendo para o quarto das meninas. Ela é super simples, apenasquadrados de dois tamanhos costurados em linha reta. Para esse primeiro projeto eu não quis correr muitosriscos, mas apenas completar o processo de fazer a coberta relativamente rápido sem me enrolar com padrões muito complicados. Eu não comprei nenhum tecido especial para esse projeto mas usei o conjuntode panos da Amy Buttler que comprei em liquidação há um ano atrás. Eu adorei o resultado final mas confesso que foi difícil chegar a um equilíbrio de cores porque os tecidos tinham basicamente o mesmo valor e muito pouco contraste entre si. Eu também escolhi fazer um matelassê bem simples só com linhas paralelasseguindo os quadrados grandes. Tendo completado essa coberta com sucesso eu acho que já estou prontaprojeto mais complexo e talvez até um matelassê a mão livre… acho que a mão livre ainda não! para um

Lots of veggies (cooked and raw), fruits, almost no starch a  little protein and no sweets or alcohol.  I already feel my body getting lighter and my mind clearer… nice.

Muitos vegetais (crus e cozidos), frutas, quase nada de carboidratos e só um pouquinho de proteína. Nada de doces ou alcoól. Já estou sentindo o corpo mais leve e a mente mais clara… muito bom.
