Here’s a quick peek into what has been keeping me busy:

The first project is a quilt for Marta and Liliana’s room. Progress is slow but at least it is moving.

The second is a set of seven aprons for children.We are hosting a birthday party for Marta this Sunday and invited four of her closest friends to make pizza together. Each child will get an apron to use at the party that they can take home afterwords. This is the easiest apron ever, so simple and so effective. I will post a tutorial as soon as things slow down a little and tell you more about how the idea came about.

The third project is a brochure for the arts festival the Rudolf Steiner Centre Toronto is planning for this coming Summer. It is called Encounters with the Imagination – A Festival of Arts and Education and looking at the line-up of courses it looks very exciting! I’ll share pictures of this one when it is done.

Aqui vai uma pequena amostra dos projetos que estão ocupando o meu tempo:

O primeiro projeto é um quilt para o quarto da Marta e da Liliana. Tá indo devagar, mas pelo menos está indo!

O segundo é uma série de sete aventais para crianças. No domingo vamos celebrar o aniversário da Marta e convidamos quatro amigas para fazer pizza. Cada criança vai ganhar um avental para usar na festa e depois levar para a casa. Esse é o avental mais simples que eu já vi e assim que as coisas acalmarem um pouco eu faço um PAP e conto mais sobre o avental e como surgiu a idéia.

O terceiro é o projeto gráfico do progrma do festival de artes promovido pelo Rudolf Steiner Centre Toronto em julho.  O nome do festival é  Encounters with the Imagination – A Festival of Arts and Education e só de olhar os cursos que estão em oferta já dá vontade de participar. As fotos vão ficar para depois de pronto.

Some time ago I came across handmade baby shoes and fell in love with them right away. At the time I didn’t feel very confident this would be an easy project so I just bookmarked the page and forgot about it. Just recently friends of ours had a baby girl and while looking for gift ideas I found those booties again. What a great opportunity to find out if my sewing skills have improved! The original plan was to make a pair of the booties and a pair of mary-janes. The booties I managed fine and I’m here celebrating my success with you but the mary-janes… will have to wait a bit longer. The thing is I chose to do the model that has elastic on top rather than a strap with velcro and I just can’t manage to make it work with the elastic. Of course I could just do the alternative strap but stubborn I am! Some day I’ll share the mary-janes with you… hopefully before the baby turns 15!

Há um tempinho atrás eu me deparei com sapatinhos para bebê feitos a mão e me apaixonei de imediato. Naquele tempo eu não achei que seria um projeto fácil pra mim, então eu marquei a página e meio que esqueci. Recentemente, um casal muito amigo nosso teve uma filhinha e quando fui procurar o que eu podia fazer para dar de presente achei essas botinhas de novo. Uma bela oportunidade de ver se a minha habilidade com a máquina de costura melhorou. O plano original era fazer um par de botinhas e um par de sapatinho de boneca. As botinhas eu fiz sem problema e estou aqui celebrando meu sucesso com vocês, já o sapatinho de boneca… vai ter que esperar um pouco mais. O negócio é que eu escolhi o modelo que tem elástico no peito do pé ao invés de um simples fecho de velcro, mas não estou conseguindo trabalhar com o elástico. Claro que eu poderia simplesmente fazer o com o fecho, mas eu sou teimosa! Um dia eu vou vou mostrar o modelo de boneca com vocês, espero que antes da neném fazer 15 anos!

Today has been the coldest day of the Winter so far. The mercury dropped down to -22 C (-8 F) on the thermometer outside, which makes me very grateful for  having gone ice skating yesterday! Today was all about staying in. I Cleaned up the house, caught up with the laundry and worked on a new project.  Warren took care of the food and helped me on some improvements on the girls bedroom. Marta and Liliana played, played and played and made a few treats for the birds too.  Full day. I’m now more than ready for bed. Have a great week!

Hoje foi o dia mais frio desse inverno até agora. O mercúrio baixou até os -20 C no termômetro, o que me fez muito agradecida por termos ido patinar no gelo ontem! Hoje foram só atividades caseiras. Eu fiz faxina, lavei roupa e trabalhei num novo projeto. O Warren cuidou da comida e me ajudou a fazer umas melhorias no quarto das meninas. A Marta e a Liliana brincaram, brincaram e brincaram e fizeram um presente para os passarinhos também. Dia cheio. Agora estou mais que pronta para ir para a cama. Tenha uma ótima semana!

I really want to move on but here I am still talking about Christmas presents. The thing is I’m finding hard to find the time to write more then once a week right now so apologies for the snail pace. I just wanted to register these last gifts I made for Marta and Liliana, the doll slings.  I got the idea when Liliana said she would like a baby in a bag for Christmas. Indeed, both of them have been playing with dolls a lot recently so it made sense. I made one sling for each and  recycled two dolls  to go with them. The Waldorf doll (on the sling with a star) was given to me by a dear friend as a wedding gift but has been put away for a couple of years. Now that the girls are playing with dolls properly if felt like the right time to bring her out again.  The red doll used to be green and was made by me a couple of years ago but completely fell apart. The only things I could recover were the head and hands. Now it has a christmassy dress on.  For the slings I, yet again,  used the instructions in the book Creative Play For Your Toddler. A book I couldn’t recommend enough for both its theoretical content on the stages of child development and appropriateness of toys and the beautiful and easy to make toys themselves. Ok, this is me for Christmas. Done!

Just a note about the pictures: The three last pictures were taken before Christmas and the poor lighting is due to the fact that it was taken at night when Marta and Liliana were already asleep. The first picture was taken a few days ago and the doll on the sling was made by my mum. She actually looks great in the sling!

E cá estou eu, em meados de janeiro, ainda falando em Natal. O negócio é que eu não tenho tido muito tempo para escrever, daí o passo de tartaruga. Eu só queria resgistrar esse dois últimos presentes que fiz para a Marta e a Liliana, o canguru para bonecas. Eu tive a idéia quando a Liliana falou que queria um “bebê na sacola” pro Natal. De fato, as duas têm brincado muito de boneca ultimamente, então achei que seria um bom presente. Eu fiz um canguru para cada uma e reciclei duas bonecas para acompanhar. A boneca no canguru que tem a estrela me foi dada como presente de casamento por uma amiga muito querida. Ela ficou guardada por uns dois anos e agora me pareceu a hora certa para reintroduzí-la. A boneca vermelha um dia foi verde e foi feita por mim há uns dois anos mas se despedaçou toda, só sobrando as mãos e a cabeça. Agora ela tem uma roupa nova vermelha bem natalina. Para os cangurus eu, mais uma vez, usei as instruções do livro Brincadeiras Criativas Para Seus Filhos. Um livro que não canso de recomendar tanto pelo seu conteúdo teórico sobre os estágios de desenvolvimento da criança como também pelos brinquedos práticos e fáceis de fazer. Ok, chega de Natal. Acabei!

Só uma observação sobre as fotos: as três útimas fotos foram tiradas antes do Natal, a noite enquanto as meninas dormiam. Daí a qualidade péssima da luz. A primeira foro foi tirada recentemente, e a boneca que está no canguru foi feita pela minha mãe. Que por sinal ficou ótima no canguru, não?

So here is another Christmas gift for the girls, not handmade but hand painted. Warren found a sledge on the street last Summer and brought it home with the idea of painting it to give to Marta and Liliana in the Winter. Knowing that my mum was scheduled to come and visit us in October we saved it as a project for her. This talented grandmother has been perfecting her decorative painting skills for quite a while now and we couldn’t miss this opportunity. Only my mum and I were too busy working on the girls sleeping sacks that she didn’t have time to finish it before going back home. Truth be said it was also cold and humid so it took quite a while for the paint to dry properly. Well, I haven’t painted anything in ages (since college?) and never done any stenciling before but I gathered courage and with very rudimentary instructions I did it anyway, last minute I confess.  I must say that I like the way it looks, but from a distance only! If you look close up you’ll see that I did a pretty lame job with the stenciling… but hey, the two girls are happy and thoroughly enjoying their gift out there in our snow blanketed back yard, aren’t they? Then I’m happy too.

Aqui está outro presente de Natal que demos para as meninas, não foi feito a mão mas foi pintado a mão. O Warren achou o trenó na rua, no verão passado, e trouxe para casa com a idéia de pintar e dar de presente para a Marta e a Liliana no inverno. Sabendo que a minha mãe vinha para cá em outubro nós quardamos esse projeto especialmente pata ela. Essa vovó talentosa vem aperfeiçoando as suas habilidades com a pintura já há um bom tempo e nós não podíamos perder a oportunidade. Só que a minha mãe e eu ficamos tão concentradas em terminar os sacos de dormir que acabou não dando tempo dela terminar o trenó antes de voltar para o Brasil. è verdade que o tempo também não ajudou, estava frio e úmido. Bom, eu não pinto nada há milênios (desde a faculdade?) e nunca fiz stencil na vida mas eu tomei coragem e com instruções muito rudimentares eu pintei assim mesmo, confesso que foi no último minuto também. Eu até que gostei do resultado, mas só de longe! Se você olha de perto vê que que tá pra lá de mal pintado… mas sabe o quê? As duas meninas estão felizes e curtindo muito seu novo trenó lá fora no jardim coberto de neve, não estão? Então eu tô feliz também!

I so wanted to share this before the holidays, but I just couldn’t get it photographed without spoiling it for the girls. Warren made this gorgeous house to host the set of peg dolls I made for Marta and Liliana for Christmas. They saw me working on the dolls and even helped but they had no idea about the house. Warren is a very talented woodworker and the house is just gorgeous (for my eyes at least!), don’t you love the fire place complete with chimney?  Marta and Liliana absolutely adored it and have been playing with it everyday. Such joy!

Eu queria ter compartilhado esse post antes do natal, mas nao queria estragar a surpresa. Warren fez essa linda casa de bonecas para hospedar os bonequinhos de madeira que eu fiz para a marta e a Liliana para o Natal. Elas me viram trabalhando nos bonecos e até ajudaram, mas elas nem imaginavam que iam ganhar uma casa de bonecas também. O Warren é um carpinteiro de mão cheia e a casa ficou linda de mais. Lareira com chaminé e tudo, não é o máximo? A Marta e a Liliana amaram a casinha têm brincado com ela todos os dias. Pura alegria!

Happy New Year everyone! I hope you all stepped into 2011 with your right foot (a Brazilian tradition) and that this new year will be filled with creative energy. Also thank you for all the birthday wishes!

Today is our last day here in Philly and soon we will be flying back home to Toronto. Our week here ended with the completion of the gingerbread house, a project that lasted three days and yielded hours of fun for Marta and Liliana. It all started a few weeks before Christmas when Marta saw a picture of a gingerbread house in a book and was fascinated by it. Warren then told her that aunt Wendy (his sister) is a real master of gingerbread house making and she used to make amazing ones when she was a kid. So when Wendy called us next Marta asked if  she would make one with her. The request caught her by surprise but she was chuffed to be asked. As we all got together here in Philadelphia this week this seemed to be the perfect occasion for this project and though we’re already a bit off season for a gingerbread houseit is not by much. This was a solely aunt and nieces project and neither Warren or I got involved in it. Or until they started to decorate the house and we couldn’t resist!

 
 
Feliz Ano Novo a todos. Espero que coe tenha entrado em 2011 com o pe direito e que esee venha carregado de energia criativa! E tambem, muito obrigada pelos votos de feliz aniversario.

Hoje e o nosso ultimo dia aqui na Filadelfia e jaja nos estaremos voando de volta para Toronto. A nossa semana aqui terminou com a finalizacao da casinha de gengibre, um projeto que durou tres dias e proporcionou horas de diversao para a Marta e Liliana. Tudo comecou algumas semanas antes do Natal quando a Marta viu um desenho de uma casinha de gengibre num livro e ficou fascinada. O Warren entato disse a ela que a  tia Wendy (sua irma) era mestre em fazer essas casinhas de doces e que fazia umas lindas quando era crianca. Na proxima vez que a Wendy nos ligou a Marta perguntou se ela podia fazer uma casa de gengibre com ela. O pedido a pegou totalmente de surpresa mas ela ficou toda prosa. Como todos nos encontramos aqui na Filadelfia essa semana, foi a ocasiao perfeita para esse projeto. Apesar de jaum pouco fora de estacao ainda deu pra pegar carona na onda do Natal.
Esse foi um projeto caompletamente tia-sobrinhas e nem o Warren nem eu patricipamos ate elas comecarem a decorar a casa, ai nao resistimos!
