hands follow heart

Here are a few origami cubes that also make lovely Christmas tree ornaments. They are very easy to fold and a tad bit tricky to assemble. Each cube is made of six units called sonobe, named after its creator Mitsonobu Sonobe. I did try to find comprehensive online instructions for those of you who’d like to try it out but couldn’t find a good one (I know it exists though and will post if I find them). Mine are from a book called Unit Origami by Tomoko Fuse. I still have a week before the Advent fair, so I have a few more models to share with you. Aqui estão alguns cubos de origami que ficam lindos na árvore de Natal. Eles são bem fáceis de dobrar mas dão um pouco de trabalho na hora de encaixar todos os pedaços. Cada cubo é feito de seis unidades chamadas sonobe, nome de sua criadora Mitsonobu Sonobe. Eu tentei achar boas intruções na internet para aqueles que quiserem tentar mas não achei nenhuma compreensível. Mas eu sei que existe e quando eu achar compartilho com vocês. As minhas instruções são do livro chamado Unit Origami by Tomoko Fuse. Eu ainda tenho mais uma semana antes da feira de Natal e ainda tenho alguns outros modelos para mostrar.

Wow, the days are passing me by! So much so that I even forgot to post the “This moment” picture last Friday. Well, I supposet that’s what happens when you do too many things at the same time… I’m glad at least wasn’t a child that I forgot somewhere!

So today is the first day of Advent, so much anticipated by Marta! This weekend we took out some Christmas decorations, made an Advent wreath, set Mary, Joseph and the donkey on their journey and prepared the nature table for their arrival. And now we can officially sing Christmas songs!

Uau, os dias estão correndo! Tanto que esqueci de postar a foto do “This moment” na sexta-feira. Bom, isso é o que acontece quando se faz  muitas coisas ao mesmo tempo… Pelo menos não foi uma das crianças que eu esqueci em algum lugar!

Hoje é o primeiro dia do Advento, tão antecipado pela Marta. Nesse fim de semana nós começamos a decorar a casa para o Natal, fizemos a coroa do advento, colocamos Maria, José e o burrinho na sua jornada e preparamos a mesa da natureza para sua chegada. E agora podemos oficialmente cantar músicas de Natal!

Desejando a vocês uma linda temporada de luz.

Phew! I thought I’d never finish the peg dolls, but here they are. Now Warren needs to finish the doll house. It was great fun making those peg dolls, specially because Marta and Liliana participated in choosing colours for the outfits, the hair and in telling me that all of them needed to have hats! I also enjoyed the fact that I didn’t start with a plan and all the different characters just emerged as we went along. Marta and Liliana have been asking to play with them but I have now put the dolls away and they will only come back out on Christmas day.  So much for anticipation… and they don’t even know about the doll house!

Ufa! Achei que nunca ia acabar os bonequinhos de madeira, mas aqui estão. Agor o Warren precisa acabar a casa de bonecas e pelo menos um dos presentes das meninas estará pronto. Foi bem divertido fazer esses bonecos, principalmente porque a Marta  e a Liliana participaram o tempo todo ecolhendo a cor das roupas, o tipo de cabelo e me dizendo que todos os bonecos precisa de chapéu. Eu também curti o fato de não ter tido um plano e todos os personagens surgiram espontâneamente. Marta e Liliana têm pedido para brincar com os bonecos, mas agora eles estão guardados e só vão reaparecer no dia de Natal. Ah, quanta antecipação! …e elas nem sabem da csas de bonecas!

It’s been busy around here and I find myself creating/making things every little spare moment I have. I finished the set of peg dolls I was working on for Marta and Liliana for Christmas and will share some pictures as soon as the light condition improves here. It has been raining all day non-stop. I’m also ploughing through with the origami for the Advent fair. At supper tonight I just realised that, actually, Advent starts next weekend and it’s time to get Joseph, Mary and the donkey out so they can start their journey towards our Nature table. I also need to remove the dired leaves from our branch so to make room for the starts that will appear one by one until Christmas day. So before the big change I thought I’d share some pictures of our Autumn Nature table, which I completely forgot after posting about the dried leaves coated in beeswax. More origami later this week!

Tá um corre-corre só por aqui e eu tenho usado cada minuto livre para fazer ou completar algum projeto. Eu terminei os bonequinhos de madeira que fiz para a Marta e Liliana pro Natal, mas as fotos vão ter que esperar até os dias ficarem mais claros. Tem chovido sem parar. Eu também tenho trabalhao duro nos origamis para a feira de Natal. No jantar de hoje me dei conta de que a temporada do Advento começa nesse fim de semana e que é hora de desempacotar o José, a Maria e o burrinho para que eles comecem a sua jornada até a nossa mesa da natureza. Eu também preciso tirar todas as folhas secas dos galhos para dar espaço as estrelinhas que vão aperecer uma a uma até o dia de natal. Então, antes da grande mudança eu achei que já não era sem tempo de mosrtar a nossa mesa do outono, pois eu esqueci completamente depois que escrevi o post sobre as folhas secas cbertas com cera de abelha. Mais tarde nessa semana eu mostro mais origami!

Going into Toronto with two little ones is not something that I usually do spontaneously, but I do welcome the opportunity when it presents itself. Last week I got to know a charming part of town that had already captured my imagination when I read this post (and followed all the links!) almost a year ago. It was actually a coincidence that I went to visit a friend who has recently moved to Leslieville. Living in suburbia – the twilight zone between the city and the countryside – for a year and a half now, I truly appreciated just walking on the streets, browsing the shops, cafés, observing people and how different the social interactions are in the city than in the suburbs. Not far from my friend’s house there is this lovely, totally child friendly cafe called Lil’ bean n’ green café in which we had a very nice lunch while the children played at the play area in the back. We then walked to her local yarn shop, The Purple Purl, which is a gem of a yarn shop with the yummiest selection of yarn. It has a great atmosphere and the extra bonus of having a little corner with some toys for the little ones to be entertained while mama delights in the yarns! Before heading back home we played in the local playground for a little bit. I actually missed living in the city. Now, the downside of the day was that it took us 1hour and 20 minutes to get back home on a route that takes 30 minutes tops when there is no traffic. It reminded me that, though in suburbia,  I’m actually happy with the compromise of living near Warren’s work and the children’s school.

Ir a Toronto com duas crianças pequenas não é uma escolha que eu faço espontâneamente, mas eu aceito a oportunidade quando ela se apresenta. Semana passada eu conheci uma parte da cidade bem chramosinha que já havia capturado a minha imaginação há quase um ano e meio atrás quando li esse post (e segui todos os links!). Na verdade foi uma coincidência, pois eu fui visitar uma amiga que se mudou recentemente para Leslieville. Morando no subúrbio – essa zona indefinida entre a cidade e o campo – já há um ano e meio, eu curti muito andar pelas ruas da cidade e olhar as lojas, os cafés, observar as pessoas e notar como as interações sociais na cidade são diferentes de nos subúrbios. Perto da casa da minha amiga tem esse café super aconchegante, e totalmente voltado para crianças, chamado Lil’ bean n’ green café no qual almoçamoes enquanto os meninos brincavam na parte de trás do restaurante. Depois nós caminhamos até a loja de fios local chamada The Purple Purl, que é uma jóia de loja com uma seleção incrível de fios. A atmosfera da loja é super agradável, com espaço para aulas e brinquedos num cantinho para entreter as crianças enquanto as mamães se deleitam em ver fios. Antes de voltarmos para a casa as crianças brincaram um pouco no parque do bairro. Me deu saudades de morrar na cidade. Agora, o lado negativo do dia foi que levamos 1 hora e 20 minutos para voltar para casa num caminho que leva apenas meia hora quando não tem trânsito. Foi só um lembrete de que, apesar de subúrbio, estamos felizes com a escolha de morar perto do trabalho do Warren e da escola das crianças.

Here are a few more origamis for the Advent fair. I made a series of very simple ones, made of only two pieces of paper. Though simple they make very effective Christmas ornaments and look great on a Chritmas tree!

Aqui estão mais alguns origamis para a feira de Natal. Eu fiz uma série bem simples, feitos apenas com dois pedaços de papel. Apesar de simples eles fazem ótima decoração de Natal e ficam lindos na árvore!

Between having lost track of the things I wanted to post about and not having the time to properly photograph the things I’ve been working on you were left with what we were up to this past weekend. We were busy but it was a lot of fun, and involved a lot of food making! Yum.

Entre ter perdido a minha lista de posts e não ter tido tempo de fotografar as coisas nas quais tenho trabalhado, sobrou pra vocês o que a gente fez nesse fim de semana passado.  Foi um fim de semana cheio, mas muito divertido e com muita comida boa! Delícia!

Eu fiz o delicioso I made the delicious Mujadara.

Comemos uma deliciosa e suculenta romã. Já viram romã grande assim? Nunca tinha visto assim no Brasil, só pequenininhas.

Passeamos na floresta e achamos uma casa de fadas enorme e também cogumelos gigantes.

Fizemos biscoitinhos de gengibre usando a receita do livro do Warren Baking Bread With Children.

E finalmente fizemos a nossa caminhada noturna com as lanternas para celebrar o festival de são Martinho.

Here it is! I finished Marta’s pink vest. Lovely pattern, very quick knit. I find vests an indispensable item in children’s wardrobes. They are very versatile, good to use  outdoors, under a jacket during the Autumn and early Spring and indoors during Winter. Marta gets hot very easily so I find vests great for when we are inside where a sweater would be too much for her. I really tried to get a good picture of her (over days!) but there was no way she would colaborate, sorry about the blur.

The pattern is Girl’s cap sleeved spring shirt by Shellee Floyd and I used Patons classic wool merino on 4 and 5 mm needles (US 6 and 8).

Aqui está! Eu terminei a vest cor de rosa para a Marta. Ótima receita, super rápida de tricotar. Eu acho coletes um ítem indispensável no armário das crianças.  Elas são bem versáteis, boas de usar do lado de fora por debaixo do casaco durante o outono ou começo da primavera e dentro de casa durante o inverno.  Marta é uma criança calorenta, então para ela o colete é perfeito para a casa ou escola uma vez que um casaco seria muito quente. Eu tentei tirar uma boa foto dela vestida com o colete, mas não houve jeito dela colaborar. Desculpe a falta de foco!

O modelo é  Girl’s cap sleeved spring shirt by Shellee Floyd e eu usei o fio Patons classic wool merino em agulhase de 4 e 5 mm.
