hands follow heart

The days are still warm (though 22 degrees Celsius is considered Winter temperature in Rio), but the mornings now are quite chilly. Our tomato plants are also telling us that the nights are cooler than they can cope with and are starting to die. And I can just feel the first frost lurking around the corner. Besides all of Mother Nature’s signs that the Summer is coming to an end, we now have a cultural flag too. Marta starts school tomorrow! I still find it hard to believe that she’s not a baby anymore but we are pretty sure she is ready for this new adventure. It will be a gentle start and she will attend only three mornings a week for this first year. Even though I know she will love it to bits I still catch myself thinking if we should keep her at home just a little bit longer. I’m sure it is only my wishful thinking that if she doesn’t go to school she will never grow up!

Durante o dia até que ainda está quentinho (apesar de que 22 graus é considerado temperatura de inverno no Rio), mas as manhãs já estão bem geladas. Os nossos tomateiros também estão nos dizendo que as noites estão mais frias e estão começando a querer morrer. E eu já estou até sentindo a primeira geada chegando. Além de todos os sinais da natureza de que o verão está acabando agora nós temos também um sinal cultural. A Marta começa a escola amanhã! Eu ainda acho difícil de acreditar que ela não é mais um neném mas nós temos certeza de que ela está pronta para essa nova aventura.  Vai ser um começo bem suave, três vezes na semana e só meio período nesse primeiro ano. Mesmo sabendo que ela vai amar a escola eu ainda me pego pensando se não deveríamos esperar mais um pouquinho. Mas tenho certeza que é só meu desejo de que se ela nunca for para escola ela vai ficar pequenininha para sempre!

You might have noticed that the Summer hasn’t been a a very productive season (in what regards crafts) around here. With all the travel we did I had to put a few projects on hold, specially the big ones. But now that things have calmed down and our lives have settled back into our rhythms I’m back working with my hands.  For a long time I wanted to knit or crochet a bath mat for our bathroom and after a long search for a nice pattern I came across the Chinese Waves dishcloth. I love its airy and springy texture and thought that if I knitted a bigger version of the dishcloth I would have a lovely a bath mat. Unfortunately it didn’t hold its shape at a larger size and even though I realized this very early on I carried on knitting it  just because I’m stubborn like that. In the end I cut up an old towel and sewed onto the back of the mat. It worked and it feels great under the feet! I have started this project way back  in April and for a while I thought it would never see the light of the day. Right now I’m giving particular attention to the projects that have been dragging on forever  and pretty relived I managed to bring this one to a closure. Just for reference,I used cotton DK, double stranded on 8 mm needles.

Você deve ter notado que o verão não tem sido uma temporada muito produtiva por aqui. Por causa das tantasviagens que fizemos eu tive que suspender a maior parte dos meus projetos, principalmente os grandes. Mas agora que as coisas acalmaram e as nossas vidas voltaram ao ritmo normal eu estou de volta a trabalhar com as mãos.  Já havia um bom tempo eu estava querendo fazer (em tricô ou crochê) um tapete para o nosso banheiro e depois de uma longa procura por um modelo interessante eu achei o Chinese Waves dishcloth . Eu adoro a sua textura arejada e pensei que se tricotasse uma versão maior do paninho eu teria um lindo tapete para o banheiro. Infelizmente no formato grande ele perdeu a forma e apesar de eu ter percebido que não ia dar certo logo no início, de teimosa que sou, eu continuei trabalhando assim mesmo. No final eu acabei tendo que cortar uma toalha velha e costurá-la na parte de traz do tapete para segurar a forma. Funcionou perfeitamente e é uma delícia de macio! Eu comecei esse projeto há um tempão atrás, em abril e por algum tempo eu ache que ele nuca veria a luz do dia.  Agora eu estou dando uma atenção especial aos projetos inacabados e estou aliviada de ter concluído esse. Só para referência, eu tricotei com dois fios de algodão (DK) e agulhas tamanho 8 mm.

Last Sunday we invited a Marta’s friend and her family over and had a little potato harvest party. The children loved to dig in the dirt to look for the potatoes and screamed in delight as they found one.  Though not huge, our crop was significantly better than last year’s.  We also harvested some beets, carrots, garlic and tomatoes and went on to cook a meal that came  almost 100% from our garden. So special!

Domingo passado convidamos a amiga da Marta e sua familia para nos “ajudar” a colher as batatas da nossa horta. As crianças adoraram cavar a terra procurando as batatinhas e gritavam de alegria quando encontravam alguma. Apesar de não muito grande essa colheita foi muito melhor do que a do ano passado. Também colhemnos beterraba, cenouras, alho e tomates e cozinhamos uma refeição que veio quase toda do nosso jardim. Muito especial!

Now that we are back from all the trips of this Summer I thought I would have time to catch up with blog writing but instead I find myself busy with work. Nice busy though. I’m using my semi-dormant graphic design skills to make a brochure for an upcoming conference in Waldorf education. I will share more on this later, for now I’m quite enjoying using my brain in some intellectual work again.

So here is what we have been up to last weekend. Warren ran an amazing clay oven building workshop at a friends place. The weather couldn’t have been more perfect for the activity, nor the location! A group of 12 people worked hard to build not one, but two bread ovens. One, quick and dirty, to be fired on Sunday to bake pizzas for lunch and the other one a more artistic and permanent for the hosts’ house.  Those people worked hard and the results were amazing!

Agora que estamos de volta de todas as viagens desse verão eu achei que ia conseguir atualizar o blog com mais frequência. Ao invés, cá estou ocupada com trabalho. Mas um ocupado bom. Eu estou usando as minhas semi-adormecidas habilidades de design gráfico para fazer um programa para um conferência sobre pedagogia Waldorf que se realizará em novembro. Depois falo mais sobre a conferência, por hora eu até que estou curtindo usar o meu cérebro em uma atividade intelectual.

Então, fim de semana passado o Warren deu uma oficina fantástica de como construir um forno de barro. A oficina foi na casa de amigos e o tempo não podia ter sido mais perfeito, nem a localização. Um grupo de 12 pessoas trabalhou junto para construir não só um forno, mas dois. Um, rápido como um rascunho, para ser usado no dia seguinte para fazer pizza para o almoço e outro mais artistico e permanente para a casa dos amigos que ofereceram a casa para a oficina. Esse povo trabalhou foi é duro e o resultado lindo!
