Our camping trip was amazing. Seven days and no rain whatsoever! In fact, there were forecasts for thunder showers during our week there and we heard thunders indeed, but the storms managed to miss us somehow. So lucky.

We were at a group site with other five lovely families, though not all at the same time. But there were always other children for the girls to play and friends to share a meal with. What a treat. The beach is definitely the highlight of the park. Lake Huron being so big I was often surprised that the water wasn’t salty as in the ocean! One can easily forget it is a lake. We closed our Summer holidays with a golden key but it feels so good to be back at home! We now look forward to going back to the Pinery next year. Who wants to join us?

A nosso acampamento foi incrível. Sete dias sem nenhuma chuva! A previsão do tempo antecipou temporais com raios e trovoadas, e a gente com certeza escutou os trovões, mas a chuva passou longe. Que sorte.

Nós ficamos numa área de acampamento em grupo com outras cinco famílias, apesar de que  não todas ao mesmo tempo. Mas sempre tinha crianças para brincarem com as meninas e amigos para compartilhar as refeições. Muito especial. A praia é, com certeza, o ponto alto do parque. O lago Huron é tão grande que várias vezes me surpreendi notando que a água não é salgada como a do mar! Fechamos as férias de verão com chave de ouro e é bom estar de volta em casa. Com certeza voltaremos no averão que vem. Quem quer se juntar a nós?

This is our last adventure of the Summer. We are heading to the Pinery Provincial Park for one week of camping. I’ll see you when we are back. Wish us good weather! …and have a good week you too.

So, my holidays concluded with a two-day solo trip to NYC. A super treat only possible with the help of Warren and grandma Perky who looked after Marta and Liliana back in Philadelphia.

I’m not much of a shopper. In fact, whoever knows me personally knows that I couldn’t care less about shoes, handbags or clothes as far as mainstream fashion goes. So my trip to the Big Apple was much more about being in the city, enjoying my dear cousin who also hosted me and replenishing the wells with culture. The highlight being the amazing Pilobolus, a beautiful spectacle of body movement pushed to its extreme, that Luisa took me to see.

That’s not to say that I avoided shops altogether. I visited Anthroplogie just to see what the fuss is all about. I wasn’t disappointed but wasn’t impressed either. It felt to me like an Urban Outfitters, with its mix of clothes and things for the home, only for a more mature age group. Truth be said the items for the home ar very nice and sometimes crafty. I dropped by the lovely Purl Soho and admired (and was tempted) by all the beautiful yarns and the gorgeous fabric they carry. In special the super thin  cottons. I also payed a visit to my favourite bookshop in NY, the Japanese Kinokuniya. That is because of my love for Japanese things, in particular Japanese paper. Funnily enough I didn’t get any this time but couldn’t resist a sewing pattern book, incense and a couple of cloths for furoshiki wrapping. I also stumbled into M&J Trimmings and got a few ribbons from an incredible selection of everything trimmings!

I think I did pretty well considering I only had two days in a city that offers so much. I didn’t make it to the Moma this time and many other places I’d love to visit or re-visit, but I shall be back!

Eu concluí as minhas férias com uma visita solo a Nova Yorque. Dois diazinhos, bem rapidinho, mas delícia! E só foi possível com a ajuda do maridão e da avó que ficaram com as meninas na Filadélfia enquanto essa mamãe foi badalar.

Eu não sou muito de compras, e quem me conece pessoalmente sabe que eu não dou a mínima para sapatos, bolsas ou roupas da moda. Então a minha viagem a Grande Maçã foi mesmo para curtir estar na cidade com a minha prima querida e recarregando as baterias com muita cultura. O ponto alto sendo o fantástico Pilobolus, um grupo de dança que leva os movimentos do corpo ao extremo.

Não dar bola para moda não quer dizer que eu não tenha ido a nenhuma loja. Eu fui checar a Anthroplogie para ver porque falam tanto dela. Não me decepcionei, mas também não fiquei muito impressionada. Me pareceu uma Urban Outfitters, com sua mistura de roupas e coisas para a casa, só que para uma faixa etária mais madura. Verdade seja dita as coisas para casa são lindíssimas! Eu dei um pulinho na Purl Soho e babei (e fiquei tantada) com todos os fios e tecidos que eles tem. Em particular os algodões super leves da Liberty. Eu também fui a Kinokuniya, uma livraria japonesa que eu amo. Não comprei nenhum papel dessa vez, mas não resisti a um livro de moldes de costura, incenso e dois paninhos de furoshiki. E por último passei na M&J trimmings e comprei algumas fitas de uma seleção inc´rivel de tudo que você possa imaginar de fitas, botões, tachinhas…

Acho que até fiz bastante considerando que só estive lá por meros dois dias. Dessa vez eu não fui ao Moma nem a muitos outros lugares que eu gostaria de visitar ou revisitar, mas eu voltarei!

Back at the RSI, a couple of weeks ago, I had a chance to participate in the course Doing Sculpture as a Transformative Activity. While Warren kindly looked after Marta and Liliana I delved into a journey of form and transformation led by the lovely Axel Ewald. For one, it was wonderful to focus on something else other than children or children related subjects. Suddenly I felt so grown up! Jokes apart, I thoroughly enjoyed working with clay and was fascinated by transformative processes in nature that we observed and used to guide our own creative process.  For instance we observed how the leaves in one plant change dramatically in shape across the life span of the plant. We then explored which forces might be at work in those transformations and tried to work with them in our own sculptures. We then did the same observation with the flower part of the plant and again tried to translate it into our work.  It was a week of intense exposure to something completely new to me and it really filled me with wonder. I look forward to one day doing a longer period of plant observation. One day… the seed has been planted.

Há duas semanas atrás, no RSI, eu tive a chance de participar do curso de escultura Doing Sculpture as a Transformative Activity. Enquanto o Warren cuidava das meninas eu mergulhei numa jornada de forma e transformação conduzida pelo muito amável Axel Ewald.  Já valeu pelo fato de eu ter tido o tempo e o espaço para focar em outra coisa que não seja criança ou assunto relacionado a crianças. Me senti adulta novamente! Mas piadas a parte, eu curti muito trabalhar com argila e fiquei fascinada pelo processo transformativo da natureza que observamos e usamos para guiar o nosso processo criativo. Por exemplo, nós obervamos como as folhas de uma planta mudam de forma dramaticamente no curso de sua vida. Nós então exploramos que forças estariam agindo nessas tranformações e tentamos trabalhar com elas nas nossas esculturas. Nós também observamos uma flor ela é formada e tentamos traduzir o processo no nosso trabalho. Foi uma semana de intensa exposição a um assunto completamente novo para mim que me encheu de admiração. Um dia eu gostaria de observar o crescimento de uma planta por um período mais longo. Um dia… a semente fo plantada.

So we finally made it home after our three week holiday. We arrived a couple of days ago but it has taken me about the same amount of days to unpack and organise our things, and it’s not all done yet! We had a wonderful time at the RSI and I owe you a post about the one week sculpture course I took. We also had a great time in Philadelphia with the grandparents which included Liliana’s birthday party, lots of swimming, a trip to the Zoo and to the Aquarium. For me it also included a short trip to NYC all by myself, a super treat. So my friends, I have a lot to tell you. Let’s only hope I can get to write about it! For the moment I’m really enjoying being back at home, reacquainting with all our stuff and delighting in the fruits of our garden. Pure joy!

Finalmente chegamos em casa das nossas férias de três semanas. Nós chegamos há uns dois dias atrás, mas levei o mesmo número de dias para desfazer as malas e organizar todas as nossa coisas, e ainda não acabei! As duas smanas que passamos no RSI foram maravilhosas e estou devendo uma entrada sobre o curso de uma semana de escultura que eu participei. A outra semana que passamos na Filadélfia com os avós paternos também foi recheada de aventuras incluindo a festa de aniversário da Liliana, uma visita ao Zoológico, muita piscina e uma visita ao aquário. E para mim uma curta visita solo a Nova Iorque. Pois então amigos, eu tenho muita estória para contar. Só espero conseguir escrevê-las! No momento eu estou curtindo estar de volta em casa, reconectando com as nossa coisas e me deliciando nos frutos da nossa horta. Pura alegria!
