hands follow heart

With a lot of sewing happening in this house lately it was only natural for Marta to get curious about it. When asked if she would like me to show her how to do it she answered yes with no hesitation. I thought the best way to go about it would be to teach her how to handle a needle and thread first, so I put together a little necklace project. I have  a whole bunch of  felt scraps from previous projects that I cut up in different shapes but roughly the same size and pierced a whole through each of them. I gave Marta a large  (and blunt) tapestry needle with a thread and a bead at the end and she went on to thread all the felt pieces into a necklace. I must say that I’m quite impressed with her attention span and concentration. She stuck with the task until all the pieces in the bowl were threaded and is now a proud owner of a colourful necklace.

Liliana couldn’t be left out so she joined us and made a beautiful bracelet with a little bit of mama’s help. She didn’t have the same drive to finish the project, but she completely got it!

Com tanta costura acontecendo por aqui utltimamente é mais que natural que a marta tenha mostrado curiosidade em aprender a costurar. Quando eu a perguntei se ela queria aprender como se faz ela respondeu que sim sem hesitar. Eu achei que a melhor maneira de começar era mostrar a ela como se usa agulha e linha e organizei um pequeno projeto de colar para ela. Eu tenho vários retalhos de feltro que cortei de várias formas diferentes mas do mesmo tamanho e também fiz um furo no meio de cada pedacinho de feltro. Eu dei a Marta uma agulha de tapeçaria grande (e sem ponta) com um fio e uma miçanga na ponta e ela pôs-se a enfiar os pedacinhos de feltro para formar o colar. Eu fiquei bem surpresa com a capacidade de atenção e concetracão dela. Ela não largou a tarefa até que todos os pedaços de feltro tivessem sido devidamente colocados no fio. Agora ela estã todoa orgulhosa do seu colar colorido.

Liliana não podia ter ficado de fora então juntou-se a nós e fez uma linda pulseira colorida com a ajuda da mamãe. Ela não teve a mesma concentração para acabr o projeto, mas ela pegou direitnho como maneja a agulha e linha!

Warren is busy practicing. In two weeks time we are headed to Boston where he is teaching a workshop called The Art of Baking Bread and an Evolving Picture of Human Conciousness at the Rudolf Steiner Institute. Next week will be bagels. what a shame.

Hoje nós comemos croissants orgânicos feitos com fermento natural (ou levan) de café da manhã. Que chique!

Warren está treinando. Em duas semanas vamos para Boston onde ele vai dar uma oficina chamada The Art of Baking Bread and an Evolving Picture of Human Conciousness at the Rudolf Steiner Institute. Semana que vem vai ser bagels (aquele pão redondinho com um furo no meio, que parece uma rosca). Que chato.

One of my knitting goals for this year was to make a blanket. I got the yarn as a birthday present from my mother in law, but I must have misread the pattern as I only have enough wool for half of the blanket. Do women ever outgrow “pregnancy brain” or is it just me? Anyhow, I was so set on the mitered pattern for the blanket that although I was ready to let go of the throw I wasn’t ready to let go of the mitered squares. I then went on to research what else I could make with the amount of wool I have and that is mitered. Hooray for Ravelry pattern search! I found Coco Vee Cape, this beautiful wrap just perfect for my mitered squares. It’s so addictive to knit the squares that the project is moving quite fast. I’m hoping to have it finished before we go away in about three weeks time. Watch this space.

Uma das minhas metas desse ano no tricô era fazer uma manta. Eu ganhei os fios de presente da minha sogra, mas eu devo ter lido a receita errado e só tenho o suficiente para metade. Será que algum dia o meu cérebro vai voltar ao normal ou “cérebro de grávida” dura para sempre? Enfim, eu gostei tanto do quadrado modular da manta que eu quis achar outro projeto que pudesse usá-los. Viva o mecanismo de procura do Ravelry! Eu achei Coco Vee Cape, um xale modernoso lindo que é perfeito para os meus quadrados. A receita modular é um vício e projeto está se desenvolvendo rapidamente. Eu espero acabá-lo antes de viajarmos, em três semanas. Fique de olho!

I really took my time with this one. I think it has been some three or four weeks since I started this covered rock. The thing is I can’t quite work on only one thing at a time so I usually have three of four projects going simultaneously. Warren’s birthday gift was my main focus for a while so the rock cover came in as my “rest” project, if you know what I mean. A project this small was also perfect  for the occasions in which I only had a bit of spare time but not enough to have the whole sewing circus out. Now that it is finished it is beautifully adorning our living room. I’m now thinking of starting a pair of (knitted) socks as my next small/portable project.  Or maybe mittens? Or why not both!

Nossa, essa demorou. Acho que foram bem umas três ou quatro semanas desde que eu comecei a capa para a pedra. O negócio é que eu não sei trabalhar em um só projeto de cada vez, então geralmente tenho três ou quatro projetos simultâneamente. O presente de aniversário do Warren foi a minha prioridade nas últimas semanas então o crochet virou o meu “projeto” de descanso, se é que você me entende. Um projeto pequeno assim também foi perfeito para as horas em que eu tinha um pouco de tempo de sobra mas não o sufuciente para armar todo o circo da costura.  Agora que acabei a pedra, ela está enfeitando a nossa sala de estar. E estou pensando em começar um par de meias como o meu próximo trabalho pequeno/portátil. Ou talvez luvas? Ou por que não os dois?

On Sunday we celebrated Warren’s birthday with a few friends here at our house. The original plan was a garden party where we would roast potatoes and do bread on a stick in the fire pit with the children amongst other food yumminess. We didn’t count however, with the downpour that happened the day before and left our garden all soggy and muddy. So our plans quickly changed to indoors. The fun factor wasn’t affected at all and we had a delightful time. The highlight of the party being the communal ice cream making where everyone worked for their share by turning the crank, adults and children alike. We have been in Canada for just a little over a year now and I’m ever so grateful for the lovely friends we made.

No domingo nós celebramos o aniversário do Warren com amigos aqui em casa. O plano original era fazer a festa no jardim, assar batatas e fazer pão no palito na fogueira com as crianças entre outras delícias, claro. O que a gente não contava era com o temporal que caiu no dia anterior e deixou o jardim todo enlameado. Então os nossos planos rapidamente se voltaram para dentro de casa. O fator diversão não foi nem um pouco afetado e a festa foi ótima. O ponto alto sendo o sorvete comunitário, onde todo mundo participou da confeção ajudando a girar a manivela da sorveteira. Adultos e crianças! Nós estamos no Canadá há um pouco mais de um ano e sou muito grata por já termos feito ótimos amigos.

Oh, our garden is growing beautifully! What a joy it is to see the garden thriving after last year’s disappointment. The new location is working wonders as now the plants gets sun light for most of the day. We’re not so sure yet about the quality of the soil as some plants seem to be doing better than others, but at least everything seems to be growing. We’ve already treated ourselves to some lettuce leaves and tender beet greens. The potatoes leaves are starting to emerge and two little tomatoes are on their way too. Can’t wait!

Ah, a nossa horta está indo de vento em popa! Que alegria que é ver as palntas crescerem depois da decepção do ano passado. A nova localização do canteiro está fazendo toda a diferença e agora as plantas recebem a luz do sol pela maior do dia. Ainda não estamos seguros quanto a qualidade do solo pois algumas plantas parecem estar indo melhor que as outras, mas pelo menos todas estão crescendo. Nós já nos servimos de algumas folhas de alface e folhas de beterraba também. As batatas estão começando a aparecer e dois tomatinhos estão a caminho. Mal podemos esperar!

Spring has been here for a while now. In fact Summer is just a couple of weeks away, and I haven’t shared much of our nature table this Season.  Even though we are constantly changing the (real) flowers, adding new items and removing outdated ones I feel we haven’t been giving our nature table as much attention as we did during Autumn and Winter. Probably because the weather has been so nice and we have been spending a lot of time outdoors in nature itself, we have been focusing less on our indoors corner. So to honour Spring here is how our Spring nature table is looking like right now. The cute little snail was inspired by Nicole’s bee’s wax snail tutorial on her super lovely blog Frontier Dreams.

A primavera já está quase no fim e eu nem mostrei como está a nossa mesa da natureza dessa estação. Apesar de estarmos constantemente trocando as flores (de verdade), adicionando novos ítens e retirando os velhos parece que não temos dado tanta atenção a mesa da natureza como fizemos durante o outono e o inverno.  Porque o clima tem estado tão bom nós passamos a maior parte do dia fora curtindo a natureza “in loco” e focamos menos no nosso cantinho dentro de casa. Então, para honrar a primavera aqui vão alguma fotos da nossa mesa da natureza. O caracol foi inspirado pelo tutorial oferecido pela Nicole no seu blog muito especial Frontier Dreams.

I’m very pleased with the pattern and so is Warren. This is exactly the kind of shirt he likes to wear.  When I first cut out the pieces I thought the smock was going to turn out humongous, but as it happens the only modification I needed to do was to take 2 inches (5 cm) off the sleeves. However,  it wasn’t so easy to put it all together but after a few attempts and a couple of rip-offs it all came together nicely. There are lots of room for improvement and I hope I’ll be able to do a better job out of the second one. I thought doing the gathering for the neck and placing the neckband was particularly tricky and need to work on making it more uniform.  I’ve learned that basting is the best friend of the inexperienced sewer!

This pattern is called French Cheesemaker Smock (#102) and is from Folkwear and the instructions were very clear to follow.  And do they have a whole collection of very interesting patterns? Oh, I’m tempted!

Esse molde se chama French Cheesemaker Smock (#102) e é da Folkwear. As intruções são bem claras e fáceis de seguir.  E eles têm uma coleção incrível de moldes muito interessantes. Ai tentação!

Warren’s parents are in town and we all came to his work at lunch time for a last minute birthday picnic. We only had a couple of hours in the morning to prepare it all as we also had to fit a trip to the supermarket to get a few of the ingredients.  Perky prepared all the croissant, cream cheese and smoked salmon sandwiches while Marta and Liliana helped me bake Warren’s surprise birthday cake, or better yet,  a set of five delicious chocolate molten cakes adorned with raspberries and strawberries. Pure decadence!

I also managed to finish one of Warren’s shirts just in time for today. I had high hopes of having both of them ready, but considering how busy these past weeks have been I did really well finishing at least one.

Happy birthday my beloved husband and best friend. I love you!

Os pais do Warren estão aqui em Toronto passando a semana com a gente. Hoje fomos todos ao trabalho do Warren na hora do almoço para um pique-nique de aniversário de última hora. Nós só tivemos duas horinhas para preparar tudo essa manhã uma vez que também tivemos que ir ao mercado comprar alguns dos ingredientes para o bolo. A Perky preparaou todos os sanduíches de croissant, cream chesse e salmão defumado enquanto a Marta e a Liliana me ajudaram a fezer o bolo surpresa. Ou melhor, um conjunto de cinco petits gâteaux de chocolate decorados com framboesas e morangos. Pura decadência!

Eu também consegui terminar uma das blusas para o Warren a tempo para hoje. Eu tinha esperanças de ter as duas prontas, mas considerando o quão corridas têm sido essas semanas eu até que me saí muito bem fazendo uma.
