hands follow heart

The week has gone all too fast. A short week (because of  last Monday’s holiday) plus being plain busy meant that not much time was left for updating the blog. I had good intentions though, and I captured a few of the things that we have been up to the past few days.

Marta and Liliana are running a restaurant business and I highly recommend the very original cuisine and excellent table service.

Today was Warren’s bread baking workshop and we all enjoyed delicious pizza for lunch and took freshly baked bread home.

It has been hard to find a good chunk of time to concentrate on sewing Warren’s shirt but it did happen yesterday and I finally made some more progress.

And whenever I can, I have been squeezing in a little crochet and making another covered stone. This one for our home.

Essa semana passou rápido demais. Uma semana curta (por causa do feriado de segunda-feira) mais o monte de coisas para fazer significou que não tive muito tempo de atualizar o blog. No entanto as intenções foram boas e eu capturei algumas das coisas que nos mantiveram ocupados essa semana.

A Marta e a Liliana abriram um restaurante e eu recomendo a cozinha original e o excelente serviço de mesa.

Hoje foi a oficina de pão do Warren e nós participamos da pizza na hora do almoço e também levamos pão fresquinho para casa.

Tem sido difícil achar um tempo significante para me concentrar em costurar a camisa do Warren, mas sábado eu consegui e finalmente fiz mais algum progresso.

E sempre que dá, eu tenho feito um pouquinho de crochê e trabalhado uma nova capa para pedras. Essa para a nossa casa.

… to wash, dry and store Winter away. The weather has been glorious all this week so far, sunny, no clouds and temperatures up to 32 Celsius (90F). Even a bit too hot for the little ones to play outside in the middle of the day. I thought this was the perfect opportunity to freshen up our woolens and have them soaken up a lot of sunshine. Now, there’s a lot of contradictions in advice in how to store wool but I’ll put ours in an airtight container with a handkerchief dabbed with lavender essential oil and hope they will be deliciously fresh smelling for next Winter.

Hoje é o dia perfeito para lavar, secar e guardar as roupas de inverno. O tempo tem estado maravilhoso a semana toda, ensolarado, sem nuvens e com temperatura na casa dos 30 graus Celsuis. Tem estado até um pouco quente demais para as pequerruchas brincarem do lado de fora no meio do dia. Mas a ocasião é perfeita para lavar as roupas de lã, arejá-las e deixá-las absorver muito sol. Agora, existem muitas contradições em como guardar artigos de lã mas eu vou colocar as nossas em caixas de plástico com um lencinho respingados com algumas gotas de óleo essencial de lavanda para manter as traças longe. Espero encontrar nossas roupas de lã deliciosamente cheirosas no próximo inverno.

Today is a holiday here in Canada. We didn’t have any special plans for the long weekend mainly because I, as a stay at home mum of two children under school age (and new to the country), was completely unaware of it. That doesn’t mean that it wasn’t a good one though. The garden is still the focus of our attention these days. We dug a second bed and planted lettuce, basil, chives, carrots, beets, tomatoes, potatoes and sunflowers. At the garden centre I couldn’t resist and also got a lavender plant. I love their scent. Their excitement didn’t wear off and both Marta and Liliana loved to help with placing the seeds in their holes and covering them with soil. Every morning after breakfast we have been stepping out to say good morning to the plants and cheer them to grow beautiful and healthy. Marta takes this task very seriously. This weekend I also made  huge progress with Warren’s birthday present and managed to trace and cut all the pieces of the pattern for two shirts. Lastly, Marta and Liliana were given a brand new tricycle as a hand-me-down from a friend so there was also a lot or riding the new toy this holiday. I hope you had a good one too!

Hoje foi feriado aqui no Canadá. Não planejamos nada de especial principalmente porque eu, que não estou trabalhando e com duas crianças abaixo da idade escolar, nem me dei conta. O que nçao quer dizer que não tenha sido um bom fim de semana prolongado. A nossa horta continua sendo o centro das nossas atenções esses dias. A gente preparou um segundo canteiro e plantamos alface, manjericão, cebolinha, cenoura, beterraba, tomate, batata e girassóis. Enquanto na loja de plantas eu não resiti e comprei também uma lavanda. Eu amo o cheiro. A animação com o jardim ainda não terminou e a Marta e aLiliana adoraram ajudar colocando as sementes nos buracos e cobrindo-as de terra. De manhã, depois do café da manhã damos um pulinho lá fora para dar bom dia para as plantas e desejar que elas cresçam bonitas e saudáveis. Marta leva essa tarefa muito a sério. Nesse fim de semana eu também fiz ótimo progresso com o presente de aniversário do Warren e consegui traçar e cortar todos os pedaços do molde para duas camisas. E por último, Marta and Liliana ganharam um triciclo novinho de segunda mão e nosso feriado incluiu muitos passeios com pedaladas. Espero que seu fim de semana também tenha sido ótimo!

I finally finished my blouse this week. I didn’t find a loop turner and didn’t really manage to turn the loop by any other means, so I gave up on that one and made a very thin strap by folding the fabric four times and sewing it close. It doesn’t look as neat but it does the job pretty well. I’m really happy with the overall result and think the blouse looks very nice. I’ve had the fabric I used for nearly five years and was glad to find good project for it. I also loved that it matched very nicely with the contrasting fabric which was given to me by my mum just recently. The pattern I used is called Summer Blouse and is from the book “Weekend Sewing” from Heather Ross. There are other two patterns from this book that I look forward to making for myself: the Yard-Sale Wrap Skirt and the Trapeze Sundress. But first I must concentrate on Warren’s birthday gift!

Eu finalmente terminei de fazer a minha blusa. Eu acabei não conseguindo virar o tubinho para fazer a casa do botão e acabei desistindo. Ao invés eu fiz uma tira bem fininha dobrando o tecido quatro vezes e fechando com a costura. O acabamento não é tão perfeito mas dá pro gasto. Eu gostei muito do resultado final e acho que a blusa ficou bem bonita. Eu tinha esse tecido há quase cinco anos e fique feliz de ter achado um bom projeto para ele. Eu também adorei que o tecido combinou perfeitamente com o pano que eu usei para o contraste que me foi dado pela minha mãe recentemente. O modelo que eu usei chama-se Summer Blouse e é do livro “Weekend Sewing” da Heather Ross. Tem outros dois modelos nesse livro que eu mal posso esperar para fazer para mim: uma saia envelope chamada Yard-Sale Wrap Skirt e um vestido chamado Trapeze Sundress. Mas primeiro eu preciso me concentrar no presente deaniversário do Warren!

On Sunday, after we returned from the May Day celebration, we started to prepare our garden for the Summer. We transferred the vegetable bed from the back of the garden where is very shady, to a spot closer to the house where the huge Maple tree used to be. Now that the tree is gone there is plenty of of sun light reaching the ground and we will have a better chance of being successful with our crops.  Not only that but the new location will allow us to see the garden from our dinning room window!

Marta and Liliana were eager helpers. Liliana even insisted to wear her rain jacket and wellies do do the work even though the weather was glorious.  They were both fascinated by the earthworms that surfaced as we turned the soil. They enjoyed holding them in the palms of their hands and watch them wriggle and slide. They then, were very careful to put them back in the earth. The pictures don’t show it but now the peas already made it to the garden and we’re just waiting for it to become a bit warmer for the tomato plants and sunflowers to go out too. We’re also trying to find some good seeds for carrots, beets, lettuce and potatoes.

No domingo, depois que voltamos da celebração do May Day, nós começamos a preparar o jardim para o verão. Nóstransferimos a horta do fundo do quital onde há muita sombra, para perto da casa onde estava a árvore que foiderrubada no outono. Agora que a árvore se foi a luz do sol alcança o chão em abundância e as nossas chances de sucesso com a colheita aumentam. Agora também podemos ver o progresso da horta da nossa sala de jantar!

Marta e Liliana ajudaram bastante e a Lili insistiu em vestir botas e capa de chuva ainda que o tempo estivessemaravilhoso. As duas ficaram fascinadas pelas minhocas que apareceram quando viramos a terra. Elas gostaram de segurá-las na palma da mão e vê-las encolher, esticar e deslizar. Depois as colocaram cuidadosamente de volta naterra. As fotos não mostram, mas agora as ervilhas já estão plantadas e estamos esperando o tempo esquentar mais um pouquinho para podermos transferir os tomates e os girassóis lá para fora. Também estamos tentando achar boas sementes de cenoura, beterraba, alface e batatas.

Sunday was the May Day celebration at the Toronto Waldrof School.  The weather was absolutely gorgeous and couldn’t have been more perfect for the occasion.

We watched the Class 4 children parade and perform the maypole dance.

Even Warren and Marta joined in at the end.

Then we shared food with friends in a lovely picnic.

And the afternoon was packed with activities for the little ones. We painted flower pots, folded paper cranes  and made flower crowns to adorn our little May princesses heads.

Domingo foi a celebração do May Day na Toronto Waldorf School. O tempo estava maravilhosamente lindo e não podia ter sido mais perfeito para a ocasião. Nós assistimos a parada das crianças da quarta série e a dança com as fitas coloridas ao redor do mastro. Até o Warren e a Marta entraram na dança depois da apresentação. Nós compartilhamos a comida com amigos num delicioso piquenique e o resto da tarde foi recheado de atividades para os pequenos. Nós pintamos vasos de plantas, dobramos pássaros de papel e fizemos coroas de flores para enfeitar a cabeça das nossas princesas de maio.

I have just joined My Sewing Circle, a social networking website for sewers that let people organise and share projects, ideas, patterns. Just like what Ravelry is for knitters and crocheters, only they have only been around a couple of months and are not as developed yet. But looks very promising. My user name is “hands follow heart” if you fancy being my friend there.

Earlier this week I went to Fabricland to get some fabric for a shirt that I am planning to make for Warren as a birthday present. As it happens, there was a closing down sale and everything was being sold at a 50% discount. I’m actually sad that the shop is closing down as it is the closest fabric shop to my place, but the opportunity was just too good to miss. As a result Warren is getting two shirts, I’m getting a skirt and a dress and Marta and Liliana are getting a Summer nightgown each. Ok, I think I got a bit carried away. Now I have to fabricate some time to get all of this done!

Meanwhile I’m still trying to finish my Summer blouse. I remain stuck without the loop turner as I couldn’t find any in the shop because they had been sold out as a result of the sales (all tools were gone). I’m going to try one last thing before resorting to a more drastic measure…

And here is what I’m making for Warren: a French cheesemaker’s smock. This is really the kind of clothes that he likes and wears, big and comfy. I found the pattern on Folkwear, a website I came across ages ago by accident and bookmarked as a resource for future projects.

And look how pretty the Lilies of the Valley are right now! And oh, the scent…

Eu acabei de entrar para o My Sewing Circle, um site de rede social para quem costura e que permite aos usuários a compartilharem projetos, moldes, idéias. É o que o Ravelry é para quem faz tricô ou crochet, só que ainda não está tão desenvolvido pois foi acabado de ser lançado. O meu nome lá é “hands follow heart” se você quiser ser minha amiga.

No início dessa semana eu fui a loja de tecidos comprar pano para fazer uma camisa de presente de aniversário para o Warren. Para a minha surpresa a loja vai fechar e tudo estava sendo vendido a 50% de desconto. Por um lado fiquei triste pois essa loja é a mais perto daqui de casa, mas ao mesmo tempo a oportunidade era muito boa para deixar passar. Como resultado o Warren vai ganhar duas blusas, eu vou ganhar uma saia e um vestido e a Marta e a Lili vão ganhar uma camisola cada. Tudo bem, acho que eu me excedi. Agora vou ter que fabricar tempo para dar conta de fazer isso tudo.

Para o Warren eu vou fazer uma camisa nos moldes das camisas que os fazedores de queijo usavam na Europa medieval. Esse é o tipo de roupa que ele gosta, larga e confortável. Eu achei esse molde no Folkwear, um site que eu achei há muito tempo atrás e guardei como recurso para projetos futuros.

Enquanto isso eu ainda estou tentando acabar a minha blusa de verão. Eu continuo empacada sem conseguir virar o tubo de tecido para fazer o fecho da frente.

E por último, tenho curtido os lírios do vale que estão floridos no nosso jardim. Tão lindo e tão cheiroso.

… nós fomos passear num pomar de maçãs onde as árvores estavam todas floridas

… uma certa menininha passou um longo tempo arrumando seus brinquedos

… e eu dei uma tricotada só para não enferrujar

Tão simples. Tão bom.

I have a new sewing machine. Yay! Thanks mum for the big help.

So, to start a long cue of projects to come here are pajamas for Marta and Liliana. Marta got the full set and poor Liliana got only the trousers as I didn’t have enough fabric for her top. The pattern I used is Kwik Sew 3126 and I’m pretty happy with it. As I don’t have much practice in sewing I chose something simple though I was very daunted by the collar! It was also the first time I used a commercial pattern and thought it was very straight forward with very easy to follow instructions. Even the collar turned out ok.  But there’s still so much I have to learn.

My second project is already in the making and is a blouse for myself. But I’m stuck as I don’t have a loop turner and couldn’t make anything else work to turn the loop inside out. No crochet hooks, no paper clips… any ideas I should try before heading to the shop?

Eu agora tenho uma máquina de costura nova. Oba! Obrigada mãe, pela a grande ajuda.

Então, primeiro de uma longa fila de projetos que estão por vir são pijamas para a Marta e a Liliana. Para a Marta eu fiz o conjunto completo e a pobre da Lili ganhou só as calças porque eu não tinha pano o suficiente para a parte de cima. O modelo que eu usei foi o Kwik Sew 3126 e gostei muito. Como eu não tenho muita prática de costura eu escolhi um modelo bem simples, mas confesso que o colarinho me intimidou! Essa também foi a primeira vez que usei um modelo comercial e achei que foi super fácil com as intruções muito bem explicadas e até o colarinho saiu direitinho.  Mas ainda tenho muito o que aprender.

O meu segundo projeto já está em andamento e é uma blusa para mim. Mas agora estou empacada pois não tenho um daqueles ferrinhos de virar um tubo de tecido pelo avesso e não consegui fazer com que nada funcionasse. Nem agulha de crochê, nem clip de papel… alguma id~eia do que mais eu possa tentart antes de me render e ir até a loja?
