Right after Christmas, on Boxing day, we flew out to Philadelphia and are here to spend the week with Warren’s parents. Despite all the security nonsense at the airport and the late arrival we made it in good spirits. Marta and Liliana are delighted to see Grandma Perky and Grandpa Norm again and are enjoying all the loving attention. Today is my Birthday and as one of the gifts from Warren and Perky I got a couple of hours children-free to browse around the very charming Germantown Avenue in Chestnut Hill. I even found a few lovely things to spend some money on! I actually found patterns for a pajama and nightgown I’ve been wanting to make for the girls for a while and some nice fat quarters for a future quilt project.  And as I write delicious smells reach me from the kitchen… amongst which chocolate brownie… Oh, I’m being spoiled today!

Logo depois do Natal nos viemos para a Filadelfia passar a semana com os pais do Warren. Apesar de toda a bagunca no aeroporto por causa da seguranca redobrada mais os atrasos nos chegamos ate que com bom humor. Marta e Liliana estao felizes de rever os avos paternos e se esbaldando comtanta atencao. Hoje e meu aniversario e como um dos  presentes do Warren e da Perky eu ganhei algumas horas sem crianca para badalar pela linda Gemantown Avenue em Chestnut Hill. Eu ate ache algumas coisinhas para gastar dinheiro! Comprei uns modelos de pijama e camisola que eu ja queria fazer para as meninas ha um tempao e uns panos para um futuro projeto de quilt. E enquanto eu escrevo um cheiros deliciosos vindos da cozinha me alcancam, dentre os quais brownie de chocolate… mal posso esperar!

Desejando a todos um Natal muito feliz!

I’m still running against the clock though most of the presents are now finished and wrapped. Yesterday I finished these wind wands for Marta and Liliana. I’ve been wanting to make them for ages and Christmas was an excellent excuse. I got the idea from this wonderful book called ” Creative play for your toddler – Steiner Waldorf expertise and toy projects for 2 -4s ” by Christopher Clouder and Janni Nicol. I also finished Baby’s Winter outfit. Baby was a wedding gift to us from my dear friend Sue McCabe and is well loved by my children. The doll’s clothes  are not exactly a Christmas gift to Marta and Liliana  but Baby will appear fully dressed in her new garments on Christmas day.  This afternoon I’m working on the especial star for tonight for our last Advent ritual and as soon as Marta and Liliana wake up from their nap we’ll make cookies for Santa Claus.

Eu ainda estou correndo contra o relógio apesar de quase todos os presentes estarem prontos e embrulhados. Ontem eu finalmene terminei os círculos de fitas para a Marta e a Liliana. Já havia um tempão que eu queria fazê-los e o Natal foi uma razão excelente. A idéia foi do livro ” Creative play for your toddler – Steiner Waldorf expertise and toy projects for 2 -4s ” por Christopher Clouder and Janni Nicol, que aliás é ótimo e eu super recomendo. Ontem eu também terminei a roupa de inverno da Neném. A Neném foi o nosso presente de casamento feito pela minha querida amiga Sue McCabe e adorada pelas minhas filhotas. As roupas da boneca não são exatamente um presente de Natal para a Marta e a Lili, mas a Neném vai aparecer toda de roupa nova no dia de Natal. Hoje a tarde eu estou trabalhando numa estrela especial para o nosso último ritual do Advento essa noite e assim que as meninas acordarem famos fazer cookies para o Papai Noel.

Today is the last Sunday of the Advent. The fourth candle has been lit. The 20th star has been hung on our tree. Excitement is building up and Marta can’t stop talking about Santa Claus and that he rides a sleigh and will come to our house to leave her a gift. We told her that we have to bake cookies to leave for him on Christmas Eve, but that might have been too early… now she’s asking to bake cookies everyday.

On Saturday we spent a good chunk of the morning  in one of our preferred outdoors hang out. This is how it looked like:

On Saturday I also finished and wrapped at least one of the girls presents. I made a bucket made of fabric to hold the wood blocks we made for them from our felled Maple tree. Warren sanded, oiled and bee waxed the blocks and they look stunning. I got the inspiration for the bucket here and you can get the pattern from here.

We woke up today to this wonderful display of art in our kitchen. Could have been Damien Hirst, couldn’t it?

And to close a good weekend some decadent chocolate cake!

Hoje é o último domingo do Advento. A quarta vela foi acesa e a vigésima estrela foi pendurada. A antecipação está aumentando e a Marta não pára de falar no Papai Noel e que ele vem num trenó deixar um presente para ela na véspera do Natal. A gente falou para ela que temos que fazer biscoitos para deixar para o Papai Noel para quando ele vier deixar o presente, mas acho que falamos um pouco cedo demais. Agora a Marta quer fazer os biscoitos todos os dias.

No sábado nós passamos um bom pedaço da manhã num dos nossos lugares prediletos para passear e estava lindo com tanta neve.

No sábado também eu consegui terminar e embrulhar pelo menos um dos presentes das meninas. Eu fiz um balde de tecido para segurar os blocos de madeira que fizemos para elas da madeira da árvore que foi derrubada. O Warren lixou, passou óleo e cêra de abelha nos blocos e eles ficaram lindos. A inspiração para o balde eu peguei daqui e o modelo daqui.

Hoje de manhã, ao acordar, demos de cara com um lindo trabalho de arte em nossa cozinha. Poderia ter sido o Damien Hirst, não?

E para fechar um bom fim de semana eu e Marta fizemos um bolo de chocolate maravilhoso!

So here is what I sent to my partner Anna and her family on this edition of the Seasons Round. The Snow Queen was inspired on a much more elaborate standing puppet I saw at the crafts fair at TWS. It was great fun working on it but also quite challenging as sewing isn’t exactly my strong point, let alone sewing by hand! I’m very pleased with the result and still have material left to (maybe) make the king for our nature table after the holidays. The origami ornament is called Morning Dew. The pattern for this model is on the book “Kusudama Ball Origami” by Makoto Yamaguchi and is made of  60 pieces of folded paper. Making these origami balls have been a passion of mine for over ten years now. Although they are not originally meant to be Christmas tree ornaments they lend themselves beautifully to that purpose. The last handmade item that I sent Anna was the Christmas card I made with Marta using a paper underlay and crayons. Additionally in the package I included a wooden card holder and a beautiful postcard of Christmas lights. Aqui está o que eu mandei para a minha parceira Ana e sua família nessa edição do Seasons Round. A Rainha da Neve foi inspirada numa boneca que eu vi na feira de Natal da TWS. Eu curti muito fazer a boneca mas foi também um desafio uma vez que costurar não é o meu forte, muito menos costurar a mão. Eu gostei muito do resultado e ainda tenho material suficiente para fazer (talvez) o Rei da Neve depois do Natal. O enfeite de origami chama-se Morning Dew e o modelo está no livro “Kusudama Ball Origami” de Makoto Yamaguchi e é feito de 60 pedaços de papel dobrado. Fazer essas bolas tem sido uma paixão minha há mais de dez anos. O último ítem feito a mão que eu mandei par a Anna foi o cartão de Natal que eu fiz com a Marta usando uma matriz de papel e lápis de cêra. Além das coisas que eu fiz eu ainda incluí um porta cartão e um cartão postal natalino. A couple of days ago we received our package from the Seasons Round Exchange. Seasons Round is a very sweet initiative organised by Kyrie from are so happy.  It is a crafts swap focused on nature tables and therefore themed according to the Seasons of the year. This edition’s theme was Winter {Light}.  This was the first time I participated and I enjoyed it thoroughly. There’s something quite especial in this collective planing, crafting, giving and receiving cycle and I was happy to be part of it. My partner for this edition was Anna from Along Griffin Creek and she treated us with so many goodies that it felt like an early Christmas. Thank you Anna so much for your generosity! I just can’t get over how cute the snow queen and baby are. They are my favourite. No início dessa semana chegou o nosso pacote do Seasons Round Exchange.  O Seasons Round é uma troca de trabalhos manuais voltados para a mesa da natureza e é organizada pela  Kyrie do are so happy. Os temas são sempre ligados as estações do ano e o tema dessa edição foi Inverno {Luz}. Essa foi a primeira vez que participei e curti do início ao fim. Tem alguma coisa muito especial no ato coletivo de planejar, fazer, dar e receber que eu fiquei muito feliz de ter feito parte. A minha parceira nessa edição do Seasons Round foi a Anna do Along Griffin Creek e ela nos mandou tantas coisas que até pareceu que o Natal tinha chegado mais cedo. Muito obrigada Anna por tanta generosidade! I couldn’t resist when I saw this pop-up snowflake tutorial at Lovely World. With my love for folding paper I had to stop all my projects to try this out. I actually needed a small and quick to make gift to give to our lodger before she went back home for Christmas and  this snowflake was just perfect. It is just so clever how the bead holds it open or closed. I love it!

Eu não resisti quando vi esse tutorial no Lovely Worldque ensina a fazer um cartão tridimensional no formato de um floco de neve. Com todo o meu amor por dobrar papel eu tive que parar todos os meus outros projetos para experimentar com esse cartão. Na verdade eu também queria achar alguma coisa pequena e rápida de se fazer para dar de presente para a moça que está morando com a gente antes dela voltar para casa dela para o Natal. Esse cartão em formato de floco de neve foi perfeito. Eu adorei como a miçanga segura o cartão aberto ou fechado. Muito inteligente!

The time is pressing and I’m hoping I’ll manage to finish all the gifts I’m working on in time for Christmas. Some are finished and just need the final touches, others are almost finished or half way through and some are not even started yet! Whenever Marta and Liliana ask me what I’m doing I tell them I’m helping Santa because he is too busy getting everyones gifts ready. They are not fully aware of the whole Santa Claus bringing them gifts for Christmas so I only hope my story won’t spoil the magic in the future.

Isn’t it beautiful? And so simple. I borrowed this idea from our friends Jonathan and Daniela back in England. I haven’t actually seen their ice lanterns myself, only heard of it so I kind of made my own version. It has been cold enough out so that the ice doesn’t melt and it seemed the perfect time to have a go.  I used a medium sized mixing bowl, filled it with water up to 2/3 and placed a jar (with a little water in it so it would stay down) in the middle and left it outside overnight. In the morning I brought it in for a few minutes until the ice melted just enough that I could take the ice form out of the mould. Then I took it outside again and placed a tea light inside and voilá: an ice lantern. This will be our outdoors Christmas decoration, by the way. I just love its simplicity.

Today is also the third Sunday of Advent so we lit the third candle, hung up star number 14, sung our song and read this perfect book that we found at the library. Just perfect fot Marta and Liliana’s age.

Não é linda a lanterna de gelo? E tão simples. Eu peguei a idéia emprestada dos amigos Jonathan e Daniela, lá da Inglaterra. Na verdade eu nunca vi as lanternas de gelo que eles fazem então eu inventei a minha própria versão. Tem estado frio o suficiente do lado de fora para que o gelo não derreta e me pareceu a momento certo para experimentar. Eu usei uma tigela média e enchi com água até 2/3, coloquei um vidro de geléia dentro (com um pouco de água para o vidro ficar no lugar) e coloquei para pernoitar do lado de fora da casa. Pela manhã eu trouxe a tigela para dentro o tempo suficiente para o gelo sair da forma. Então levei de novo para fora e coloquei uma velinha dentro e voilá: uma lanterna de gelo. Essa é a nossa decoração de Natal exterior. Eu amei asimplicidade dessa lanterna!

Hoje é também o terceiro domingo do Advento e nós acendemos a terceira vela, penduramos a estrelinha número 14, cantamos a nossa música e e lemos um livro muito fofo chamado “Little donkey’s Chritmas song” que achamos na biblioteca. Perfeito para a idade da Marta e Liliana.

Quite a while ago I went to Ikea and got a small table and two small chairs made of pine wood for Marta’s and Liliana’s bedroom. Since then I’ve been wanting to dress the chairs somehow. First I thought a thin cushion with a knitted cover would be nice, then I thought that maybe a quilted cover would be nicer but never really got to work on any of the ideas. Not until I came across Wood & Wool Stool and got really inspired. Even better, this was the perfect project to use up all those small amounts of yarn left over from all my knitting projects. I’m not very good at crochet but I’d learned  how to make a  granny square before so I was able to jump right at it. The big challenge for me was to make the cover fold around the edges of the chair without flaring but even that wasn’t as hard as I imagined.  I’m very pleased with the result and so are the girls. Now I need to start working on the second one.

Há um tempo atrás eu fui a Ikea e comprei uma mesinha com duas cadeiras para o quarto da Marta e da Liliana. Desde então eu tenho pensado em “vestir” as cadeiras de alguma maneira. Primeiro achei que uma almofada finiha com uma capa de tricô seria legal, depois mudei de idéia e achei que uma capa costurada talvez ficasse melhor mas acabei não fazendo nada. Até que um belo dia eu me deparei com Wood & Wool Stool e a inspiração me pegou em cheio. Melhor que isso foi o fato desse ser o tipo de projeto perfeito para usar todas as sobras de fios de lã dos meus projetos de tricô. Eu nem sei fazer crochê muito bem, mas eu já tinha aprendido a fazer um “granny square” antes e pude começar o projeto de imediato. O maior desafio foi fazer a capa virar nas bordas da cadeira sem ficar tudo desbeiçado, mas até isso foi mais simples do que imaginei. Eu fiquei super feliz com o resultado e as meninas também. Agora é só começar a segunda…
