Happy Halloween!

Feliz Dia das Bruxas!

So by now we have gotten used to the house without the giant Maple trees in the front and back gardens. As a benefit we have been enjoying a lot more natural light in the house and a few friends are taking the wood to dry for next year’s Winter. I spent last Sunday afternoon cutting pieces of the Maple branches to make a wood block set for Marta and Liliana as a Christmas present. We almost bought a set like this a while back when we were still living in England. So it is a treat to be able to make them myself with beautiful wood that came from a well loved tree. Both Marta and Liliana have shown interest and signs that they are ready to play with it and I can’t wait to see them enjoying the gift. While at it I’m also making some doll/gnome house furniture for when Marta is a tad bit older. The little gnomy you can see in the picture below was also made by me at the parent and tot session a couple of weeks ago at TWS.

Já nos acostumamos com a casa depois que as árvores foram cortadas há algumas semanas atrás. Como resultado positivo agora temos muito mais luz natural em casa e também alguns amigos vão levar a madeira para secar para usar no próximo inverno. Eu passei a tarde de domingo cortando pedaços dos galhos do Maple para fazer um conjunto de blocos de madeira como presente de Natal para a Marta e Liliana. Há um tempo atrás, quando ainda estávamos na Inglaterra, a gente quase comprou um conjunto parecido. Nada mais prazeroso, então, do que poder fazê-lo eu mesma com uma bela madeira de uma árvore que foi bem amada durante sua existêmcia. Tanto a Marta quanto a Liliana já mostraram interesse e sinais de que estão prontas para brincar com o conjunto e eu não vejo a hora de vê-las curtir o presente. Enquanto estava com a mão na massa aproveitei para fazer mobília para uma casa de bonecas ou gnomos pra quando a Marta for um pouquinho mais velha. O gnomo que você pode ver na foto acima foi feito por mim durante o grupo de recreação que eu levo a Marta e a Liliana na escola Waldorf.

Yesterday we went back to Eaton Hall, the park we took my mum to in late September in a failed attempt to see the leaves turning colour. This time we missed the red phase of the Maple trees but to be immersed in a forest of golden yellow trees was just amazing. You just don’t get that in Brazil, nor in England.

Ontem nós retornamos ao parque Eaton Hall, onde levamos a mamãe no final de setembro numa tentativa frustrada de ver as folhas das árvores mudando de cor. Dessa vez nós perdemos a fase vermelha das folhas do Maple, mas estar imerso numa floresta de amarelo dourado foi simplesmente incrível. A gente não vê isso no Brasil, nem na Inglaterra.

We were late in catching our first falling Autumn leaves this year, but we caught up yesterday. After Marta and Liliana woke up from their afternoon nap we bundled up warm and went outside to play in the garden that is already peppered with autumn colours. The windy day made our game even more fun and Warren caught his falling leaf straight away. It took me a few misses and a bit of chasing the leaves surfing on the wind until I got mine. And Marta decided she didn’t want to play and gathered a few leaves from the ground instead. Warren used to play this game with his students when he was a class teacher in Olympia, WA and now we have adopted it as our Autumn family game. We love the silly mood it puts us in.

Foi com atraso que pegamos as nossas primeiras folhas de outono ao caírem das ávores esse ano. Mas ontem colocamos a diversão em dia. Logo que a Marta e a Liliana acordaram do soninho da tarde nós nos agasalhamos bem quentinhos e fomos brincar no jardim. A ventania ajudou a brincadeira a ficar mais divertida ainda. O Warren pegou sua primeira folha logo de cara. Eu peguei a minha após algumas tentativas e depois de muito correr atrás das folhas que estavam surfando no vento. A Marta, no entanto, decidiu que não queria brincar e colheu as que já estavam no chão.  O Warren fazia essa brincadeira com os alunos dele quando ele era professor em Olympia, Washington e agora a gente adotou o jogo como a nossa brincadeira de outono. A gente adora o clima de bobeira total que a brincadeira exige!

 I finished another project!  I kind of jumped the queue with this one as I wanted to be sure I would be able to use those mittens before the serious Canadian cold kicks in. The pattern is very easy to follow and my only recommendation would be a tight cast on and cast off.  This is because the edges tend to flare out.  In fact, I re-did the cast off on the left hand one because as it was the first one I knitted I wasn’t aware of this detail. If you notice the bottom of the same mitten you’ll see that it’s rolling out a bit due to a looser cast on. I was very tempted to re-knit the whole thing but it doesn’t look that bad and my queue has to move on!

Acabei outro projeto! Esse furou a fila porque eu queria ter certeza de que eu poderia usar as luvas antes verdadeiro frio canadense chegar. A receita é muito fácil de seguir e minha única recomendação é montar e rematar os pontos na agulha bem apertados pois a tendência é das beiradas enrolarem para fora. Eu refiz o remate da luva da mão esquerda porque como foi a primeira que eu fiz, não sabia desse detalhe. Se você reparar na base da luva esquerda vai ver que ela está enrolando um pouquinho também. Fiquei tentada a refazer tudo, mas não tá tão ruim assim e a fila tem que andar!

This weekend we enjoyed some African Storytelling with Pasipamire Gunguwo and Mutamba from Zimbabwe in an event called ” The tradition of the Griot – stories and music from Africa”.

This event was sponsored by the Rudolf Steiner Centre Toronto and I had the pleasure to help promoting it using my ever so rusty graphic design skills (and limited tools)!

I finished another knitting project: Crofter’s Cowl by Gudrun Johnston. It’s been almost a year since I started this project. For more than one reason it went to sleep and I just picked it up again a month or so ago. I’m happy I stuck with it as I’m very pleased with the result. I made a few modifications to the pattern as I used a much thicker yarn than what it called for. I used Rowan Chunky Tweed on 5.5 mm needles. I casted on 60 stitches instead of 80 and I knitted one entire half of the cowl and only 1/3 of the other half. Grafting didn’t go very well but I can live with it!

…and I also started a new knitting project: Fetching by Cheryl Niamath. I fell in love instantly with this design and wanted to have knitted it for my cousin but didn’t have time before we went to Philadelphia in the Summer. This is my first cable project and I’m enjoying it so far even if I feel clumsy at times trying to manoeuvre four needles plus the cable needle. I’m using S. R. Kertzer Perth and love this shade of blue.

… and even had an enjoyable Saturday evening hanging out with Mike Stipe from R.E.M, Jesus Christ and Superman while dressed as a Brazilian football player at a fun haloween birthday party.

It was indeed a busy weekend!

Nesse fim de semana nós fomos a um evento de estórias e músicas africanas chamado “A Tradição do Griot” com Pasipamire Gunguwo e Mutamba que são originalmente do Zimbabue. Esse evento foi patrocinado pelo Rudolf Steiner Centre Toronto e eu tive o prazer de ajudar na promoção fazendo o folheto de divulgação com o meu talento mais que adormecido de designer gráfica (e com limitações de ferramentas)!

Eu acabei outro projeto de tricô: Crofter’s Cowl por Gudrun Johnston. Tem quase um ano que eu comecei esse projeto, mas por mais de uma razão tive que parar. Há mais ou menos um mês atrás eu retomei e fiquei feliz de não ter desistido, pois adorei o resultado. Eu fiz algumas modificações na receita pois usei um fio muito mais grosso do que o recomendado. Eu usei o Rowan Chunky Tweed e agulhas de 5,5 mm. Montei 60 pontos ao invés de 80 e fiz uma metade inteira e apenas 1/3 da segunda metade. O grafting ficou meio mambembe, mas dá pra passar!

Eu também comecei um novo projeto de tricô: Fetching por Cheryl Niamath. Eu me apaixonei por esse modelo e queria tê-lo feito para a minha prima, mas não tive tempo antes de irmos para a Filadélfia no verão. Esse é meu primeiro projeto com “cables” (cabos em português, ou tem outro nome?) e por enquanto tudo está dando certo mesmo que eu me sinta um tanto atrapalhada manejando quatro agulhas e mais a do “cable”. Eu estou usando o fio S. R. Kertzer Perth e adorando esse tom de azul.

E pra terminar, sábado a noite eu ainda tive o prazer da companhia de Mike Stipe do R.E.M., Jesus Cristo e do Super Homem numa festa de aniversário a fantasia. Eu fui vestida de Ronaldinho!

Ô fim de semana agitado!

So I finally got round to finish one of my five current knitting projects: a pixie hat for Liliana. I was actually inspired by Waldorfmama who has made quite a few cute ones. The pattern is called Lyalya Hoodie by Natasha Schaffer. I personally didn’t find the pattern very clear and I had to look up a similar pattern to check where I was going wrong. On my third attempt I succeeded! I used Moda Dea Silk ‘n Wool Blend and it is super soft to the touch, as it should be for a baby’s hat. I love the result and am very tempted to make one for Marta too.

Eu finalmente consegui acabar um dos cinco projetos de tricô nos quais estou trabalhando no momento: um gorrinho de elfo para a Lili. A minha inspiração foi a Waldorfmama que já fez alguns desses gorros muito lindos. O modelo se chama Lyalya Hoodie feito por Natasha Schaffer. Eu não achei a receita assim tão clara e tive que olhar uma receita parecida para ver aonde que eu estava errando. Na terceira tentativa eu acertei! Eu usei o fio chamado Moda Dea Silk ‘n Wool Blend, que é uma mistura de lã e seda, com uma textura super macia, como deve ser para gorrinho de neném. Eu adorei o resultado e estou tentada a fazer um para a Marta também.

Somedays things just work out fine. I was even able to relax for a few minutes while Marta and Liliana were napping. Pure bliss. Btw, Those are the first socks that I’ve ever knitted about two and a half years ago. You can just see how the stitches are super tight as I struggled to master the four needles… but I love them!

Tem dias que tudo corre tão bem. Eu até consegui uns minutinhos para relaxar enquanto a Marta e a Lili tiravam o soninho da tarde. Que alegria! Essa foi a primeira meia que eu tricotei há uns dois anos e meio atrás. Dá até pra ver como os pontos estão super apertados como resultado da minha tentativa de manejar as quatro agulhas. Ainda assim eu adoro essas meias! 

Canada, like the United Stated, also celebrates Thanksgiving. Only here it is on the second Monday of October as opposed to the fourth Thursday of November as in the US.  The roots of the Thanksgiving holiday are set in the Harvest Festivals shared by many cultures around the globe to give thanks when the harvest season comes to the end. In present day Canada it is about being grateful for what we have and for the bounty of the previous year. Family and friends usually get together to share a Thanksgiving meal. And guess what? Yes, we’ve already made a few friends here and were invited to a Thanksgiving celebration yesterday. We spent a good chunk of the day in the kitchen preparing our contributions to the feast. Warren’s especial creation is called “almond and cranberry curried rice” and I made some chocolate chip cookies from a recipe that I’ve been wanting to try out for a long long time. The mood of the party was lovely. The house was decorated with pumpkins, squashes, corn dollies and sheaves of wheat. The table was beautifully adorned with autumn leaves and candles. And the food, hmmmm, just delicious.  Apart from Warren’s yummy curried rice there was the traditional turkey with gravy and stuffing, roasted vegetables and cranberry sauce.  So, after a joyful evening in the company of new and very welcoming friends and generous sharing, what else could we be feeling if not thankful? Happy thanksgiving to everyone.

Aqui no Canadá, como nos Estados Unidos, também se celebra o dia de Ação de Graças. Só que aqui é em outubro, e não em novembro como nos EUA. A origem desse feriado vem dos Festivais da Colheita, que eram rituais celebrados em muitas culturas ao redor do mundo em que se dava graças ao final do período da colheita. Hoje o dia de Ação de Graças é um dia onde se mostra gratidão por aquilo que se tem e pelos frutos do ano anterior. É um dia em que famílias e amigos se reúnem para compartilhar uma ceia. E adivinha o que? Sim, nós já temos alguns amigos por aqui e fomos convidados para um jantar de Ação de Graças ontem! Nós passamos boa parte do dia na cozinha preparando a nossa contribuição para a ceia. O Warren criou um prato chamado “arroz com amêndoas e cranberries ao curry” e eu fiz uns cookies de chocolate de uma receita que eu queria tentar já há muito tempo. A casa da nossa amiga estava toda decorada com diversos tipos de abóboras, bonecos feitos de palha de milho e feixos de trigo – símbolos típicos da colheita. Sobre a mesa havia velas e várias folhas de outono como adorno. E a comida, hmmmm, estava deliciosa. Além do curry delicioso que o Warren fez, teve também o tradicional peru recheado, vegetais da estação assados e molho de cranberries. Pois então, depois de uma noite alegre na companhia de novos amigos, com muita abundância o que mais poderíamos estar sentindo senão gratidão? Feliz dia de Ação de Graças para todos.

This is actually my first ever quilting project. Oh, I’m so proud! I started it a while ago, in June more precisely, but was only able to finish it just before my mum arrived in early September. What I liked most about this project is that I used only re-purposed fabric. Some were from clothes that are no longer good enough to wear and others were leftovers from either sewing or some other crafts project. I was going to go for a simpler design, just vertical stripes. Last minute I decided to dare a little bit and opted for a log cabin pattern.  I looked up many references and found this online tutorial quite useful.  I’m very pleased with the result and so is our living room. My next attempt will be a simple quilt for Liliana’s bed. My mum brought me some very nice cotton fabric from Brazil and hopefully I’ll be able to use them for this project.

Esse foi o meu primeiríssimo trabalho de quilt. Ai que orgulho! Eu comecei há um tempinho atrás, em junho, mas só consegui terminar no início de setembro. O que eu mais gostei nesse projeto foi fato de só ter usado tecido reaproveitado, ou de roupas que jã não estavam mais boas, ou de outros projetos de costura. Originalmente eu ia fazer um design mais simples, de tiras verticais. Depois resolvi ousar e optei por um padrão “log cabin“. Eu pesquisei várias referências e acabei achando essa aula online bem útil. Eu fiquei super feliz com o resultado e a nossa sala de estar também. Minha próxima tentativa será um quilt para a cama da Lili. A minha mãe trouxe uma série de panos de algodão do Brasil que eu estou planejando usar para esse projeto.
